The only thing you know for certain is that the mother is still there. For all you know Dad might be working overseas in a c**p job sending home every single dollar he can.

My kids were very young when their dad died. I always hated to ,read about ‘kids who didn’t have fathers in the home’ as if we had a choice 😡

Jilted is not the appropriate word to use there. Dumped works better. If a woman decides to have a child on her own, without having any kind of contact with a man, that's usually because they've seen that having a man around is a handicap, not a bonus or a benefit. The definition of absentee is a person who is not present in a usual or expected place. So there is still an absentee father, but not one that the mother is willing to acknowledge, so I'm sure she'd be willing to take on the title of single mother without any complaint.

Not to mention mothers that are single because the father is dead. There are multiple reasons for mothers being single mothers and it's not always because the father chose not to be involved.

Does feel like it would be better to change the view of the term used, rather than just change the term used as that brings up other issues (as can be seen by the posts). Sadly, though, it's hard to change people's views and takes way too long.

There is a lot to say fro how a father treats his wife. If the children experience that dad treats and approaches mom (and other women in general) with respect, it will form their basic attitude. Boys as well as girls will learn that women deserve as much respect as men do. By the way, this goes both ways. And the way you speak about the other one when they are not around also weighs in considerably.

There are lot of really unhealthy "examples" in popular culture (Looking at you, old James Bond) that could give kids a really skewed idea about what's ok and what's not. Wouldn't it be better to talk about consent without needing to, than later find out that it would have been a good idea

Girls too. The "if they can pinch me, I can pinch them" crowd in the gen x and boomers is scary. Not for me (saggy and old enough), but the younger guys are too often getting handsy older women hounding them thinking it's ok

This is false. Its not that weren't allowed to, its that the companies were allowed to deny them deny cards on the basis of gender. 1974 that was made illegal. But there were women who had their own cards before then. My Grandmother got her own card and had her own bank accounts in the 50s, all without her husbands permission or anything. She found out which banks didnt care and gave women accounts and cards and applied there. She was married, with her own financials. There is a difference between not allowed to and allowed to be discriminated against.

Neither of those things is true. A law was enacted in 1974 to codify women's rights to banking in their own name, but in no way does this imply that they were legally disallowed to do so before that date.

They were n uk !! from times banks were a thing , !! my grandfather had her own ,account neither had credit cards didn’t need em ! I don’t have one now ,cos I don’t want one , but m talking 1950,s !! for my gran as bought me up from 1965 ,shows how behind the times USA really is !

Agreed. My husband is in charge of hiring contractors and ordering things for his job, and almost always chooses to hire or work with female contractors over their male counterparts. Not because he's a feminist, but because by and large they are better and more knowledgeable.

I never thought of it that way, but it would be a very damaged woman indeed that wouldn’t give a pad to even someone that was shågging her partner

You n me both !! I dont carry em anymore ok so I never leave house , but im long past that now at 60 thank heavens !! But she does when she goes out n to work , she always has some handy ,so staff n customers can ask if needed , (she works in our village pub ) how it should be right
