To all the people who say "They'll just go and find another way" that's just not true. Statisitcs vary, but all suggest over 90% of people who are stopped, or survive, will get help and support, and/or the attempt itself becomes a defining moment in their lives. Most never attempt again. If you can be that help or support, then please do so. Most of us won't get the chance to do anything truly heroic in our lives. But answering the phone at 3am might just be that thing.

It's true to say, "where there's a will, there's a way" - so arguably a bridge populated by lots of people is not the most effective approach. If you see someone in such a position, you've nothing to lose by reaching out when they might feel they have lost everything. Someone - just one person - out of dozens and dozens, approached me on a bridge almost twenty years ago. They will never know it but they saved my life.

This man is not just saving those individuals who are attempting to jump off that bridge, he’s saving everyone who loves them from living with the unbearable thought of how badly their loved one was hurting when they left this world.

In 1996, A Mother Cat Named Scarlett Rescued All 5 Of Her Kittens From A Building Burning In NYC. She Walked Through Flames 5 Times To Rescue Each One

In 1996, A Mother Cat Named Scarlett Rescued All 5 Of Her Kittens From A Building Burning In NYC. She Walked Through Flames 5 Times To Rescue Each One

Scarlett had been severely burned in the process of pulling her kittens from the fire. Her eyes were blistered shut, her ears and paws burned, and her coat highly singed.

The majority of her facial hair had been burnt away. After saving the kittens she was seen to touch each of her kittens with her nose to ensure they were all there, as the blisters on her eyes kept her from being able to see them, and then she collapsed unconscious.

Scarlett and her kittens were then taken to a vet and were treated for injuries.

The weakest of the kittens, a white-coated, died of a virus a month after the fire. However, after three months of treatment and recovery, Scarlett and her surviving kittens were well enough to be adopted.

Scarlett died on October 11, 2008, while with her adoptive family in Brooklyn.

Isn't it very traumatizing for them to have their babies taken away and sold then? They love them so much, are they meant to be separated?

    BoredDisneyPrincess

2 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

After 3 months, kittens are old enough to be separated from their mothers. They've stopped suckling after 4-5 weeks and mother has taught them all the basic things. Cats are able to reproduce after 7-9 months, so they are not that young anymore when you think about it. Cats are loving creatures, but if Scarlett's kittens would have been older (and not dependent on her) she might have not done the same.

Daniel Kish Is A Blind Man Had To Have His Eyes Removed Before He Was 13 Months Old Because Of Eye Cancer

Daniel Kish Is A Blind Man Had To Have His Eyes Removed Before He Was 13 Months Old Because Of Eye Cancer

He's mastered the ability of echolocation by clicking his tongue and listening to the echoes.

He can ride his bike in traffic, recognize a building from as far away as 1000ft, differentiate specific kinds of cars. He is able to live a relatively normal life.

Kish and his organization have also taught a form of echolocation to at least 500 blind children around the world.

Also unture, sadly. We just don't have the hardware for this level of differentiation. He can avoid a parked car if he knows it's there and he's approaching it. Will help kids not bump into walls etc, which is great, and useful, but not cycle in traffic, that's dangerous enough for sighted people.

So I graduated with Dannys younger brother Keith who had the same rare eye cancer but Keith can still see, just not well. When I was 8 or 9, Danny came up to me with his"seeing eye snake"! Lil stinker, he was probably 11 or 12 and had me convinced the snake licked him to tell him which way to go. I had no idea he used echolocation!

I echolocate, but only indoors. It's essential for kissing in the dark. Outdoors it may be possible in combination with other senses such as wind strength and direction, smell, the feel of the ground underfoot etc. I've heard a true story of a blind man who stopped before walking into a car parked across the footpath by sensing the wind shadow created by the car.

I saw a documentary he was in...it's incredibly amazing what the human body is able to effort...the topic of the documentary was the "plasticity of the human brain" and furthermore, a woman was presented who learned to see with her tongue and even the famous experiments with the »inversion glasses« were presented and that really left me speechless...these glasses not only swap up and down but also right and left...there were many volunteers but virtually no one could endure their new view of the world for long. I'm about to puke just thinking about it. But finally there was this one weirdo who demonstrated perseverance and after a few days wearing the inversion glasses all around the clock something totally unexpected happened......wow, this sounds like a typical clickbait story, doesn't it? 🤔🤭

"What usually makes a fact fun is that it challenges an existing narrative. In a small way, fun and random facts remind us to stay humble and be open to being surprised," J. Keith explained. "Plus, if you need something to talk about at a party or on a date, you've always got something in your pocket."

And there are no fun facts that aren’t worth knowing, as the podcast host shared that he knows plenty of facts that might make people wonder why in the world he knows that information. “A few [strange facts] that come to mind: Famed astronomer Carl Sagan sued Apple for calling him a butt-head. The Bellagio Hotel's lake is wider than the Titanic was long. The currency of the Cook Islands featured a topless woman riding a shark... Harley-Davidson once sold its own fragrance called Black Fire,” J. Keith previously told Bored Panda.

In 2000, Zanjeer, A Mumbai Police Dog, Was Was Honored With A Full State Funeral When He Died

During the time of the 1993 Bombay bombings in March, Zanjeer helped avert at least three more attacks in Bombay, Mumbra, and Thane.

The first incident happened on 15 March 1993 when Zanjeer alerted his handlers to a scooter bomb on Dhanji Street that contained RDX explosives and gelatin sticks.

He was then called to the scene of ten unclaimed suitcases outside the Siddhivinayak Temple where the dog detected three Type 56 rifles, five 9-mm pistols, and 200 grenades marked "Arges 69".

Days later, Zanjeer investigated two suitcases at the Zaveri Bazaar that contained nine Type 56 rifles.

Over the course of his career he detected more than 2,329kg of explosives, 249 hand grenades, and 6406 rounds of live ammunition.

Zanjeer developed bone cancer and died in November 2000.

It is, because the way gravity works if the kid had already fallen he shouldn't have been able to jump off and catch up (not in a non-skydiving distance anyway). So he must have had a grip on the kid and tumbled off the balcony with him.

You may know nothing about another person other than that they wear the uniform of your country, yet you know you'd be willing to die to protect them, and they for you. The different branches may rag on each other, but when $hit really hits the fan, we back each other up no matter what.

I agree and I thought I knew what camaraderie meant but when I joined the military and experienced that unexplainable bond we all share was when I truly learned the meaning of camaraderie.

Desmond Thomas Doss (February 7, 1919 – March 23, 2006)[1] was a United States Army corporal who served as a combat medic with an infantry company in World War II. During the Battle of Okinawa, he saved the lives of 50–100 wounded infantrymen atop the area known by the 96th Division as the Maeda Escarpment or Hacksaw Ridge. Under enemy fire he rescued the wounded, carrying them one by one to the edge of the escarpment and there lowering them on a rope-supported litter down the face of a cliff.

While there are plenty of ways we can acquire interesting information these days, J. Keith says him and his co-host Helen Hong spend dozens of hours searching the internet and visiting the library for each episode of their show. “A great resource for lesser-known facts are interviews on YouTube," J. Keith noted. "You pick up a lot in a spoken discussion that hasn't already been disseminated in articles. Of course, when possible, we go to the sources themselves -- making calls to professors and authors to make sure we have our facts straight."

In 2007, Us Marine, Brian Dennis Befriended A Stray Desert Dog Called Nubs In Iraq. After The Dog Was Stabbed With A Screwdriver, The Marine Nursed Him Back To Health

The two developed such a bond that when the unit left, Nubs picked up the scent and walked 70 miles through Iraqi desert warzone to be with him.

Nubs' miraculous journey forced the Marine's hand, and Dennis and his fellow Marines unanimously decided to keep the animal, building a doghouse at the camp.

When two military police officers told Dennis the dog could not stay at the camp, he decided the only way to properly keep the animal was to get it to the United States.

Dennis' family and close friends helped raise $3,500 to fly the dog to San Diego.

In 1836, The Directors Of The Bank Of England Received An Anonymous Letter, In Which The Author Claimed To Have Direct Access To The Gold In The Bank

The directors assumed this to be a joke and simply ignored it.

However, sometime later, they received another letter, in which the enigmatic author offered to meet them at an hour of their choosing inside the main gold vault.

According to the bank’s website, the directors were intrigued but considered it impossible for someone to break into the vault without their knowledge.

Nevertheless, they agreed to the meeting and gathered together one evening, inside the vault as agreed.

To their great surprise, at the appointed time, a noise was heard beneath the floorboards, and a man popped up underneath their feet.

He was a sewer worker who had been working on repairs close to the Bank of England site at Threadneedle Street.

During his routine inspection, he had discovered an old drain that led directly underneath the gold vault inside the bank itself.

After a quick stock take, they realized that the sewer worker had not taken anything from the vault, despite having multiple opportunities to do so.

As a reward for his honesty, the directors gifted him £800, a sum that equates to £80,000 in today’s money.

£800 in 1836 might have a direct inflationary value of 80,000 in 2023, but thats not a useful comparison. As a share of economic value its more like being worth about £3.5 million today. It would be a totally life-changimg sum. It would make a sewer worker suddenly worth as much as many minor aristocrats.

My best friend worked laying fiber optic cable for phones/TV etc and his crew had the blueprints for the mall in Appleton WI to install under a certain section for a phone line upgrade. They were in basement of the mall running a line parallel to the hallway where it was shown to be a straight shot to the street with no rooms or city sewer to the side. They hit what he said felt like a different texture and broke through something. They ran a camera line to see what they hit and found what he described as a metal lined room, they couldn't see much detail. They radiod boss to see what to do and 10 minutes later two men armed with rifles rushed them. They were treated roughly and never received an explanation of what it was and he had no idea where the access point to that room was, there wasn't supposed to be anything there. From the outside of mall he could figure the approximate area but there were no other buildings or anything there.

On April 1, 2001, Hooters Offered Employees The Chance To Win A Toyota As Part Of A Beer Sales Contest

One employee called Jodee Beery knocked it out of the park with sales and ended up winning the contest.

But instead of a car, she got a small package with a toy Yoda inside and
Hooters claimed the entire contest was only an April Fools’ joke.

A year later Berry and Gulf Coast Wings, Inc., the corporate owner of the restaurant, ended up with a settlement at court.

Berry cited breach of contract and fraudulent misrepresentation and walked out with an undisclosed sum of money in her pockets.

David Noll, her attorney, was quoted on saying that the amount of money the woman received would allow Jodee to “pick out whatever type of Toyota she wants.”

Hooters has been in the spotlight before for pulling stunts like this and other s****y things. One manager got in serious trouble when he made the staff do humiliating things, like when it was slow and people needed to be cut, he would do a contests to see who would go and stay. these contests included who could eat chili out of a baby diaper without using their hands the fastest, having to crawl on their hands and knees in a race around the restaurant and having everyone get on their knees and whoever could beg the best won. It was horrible

In 1996, Pepsi had a loyalty program along the lines of “get a mug with 100 Pepsi Points, a cooler with 1,000”, and so on. They had an ad in which they joked that you could get a fighter jet with 7,000,000 points. Some guy tried to give Pepsi a check for $700,000 (10 cents a point) for the jet , and of course they refused. He sued but was ahem, shot down, because ultimately the ad was deemed to be in jest and not a contract.

There’s a documentary and a book critical of his sentencing. Soil & water experts testified it wasn’t possible for him to cause the flood and that the levee had been structurally damaged by bulldozers. Also, there were three more similar levee bursts upstream from where he apparently did this. Scott likes to brag about petty crimes he didn’t commit and was also a known petty burglar. So he was often believed. The prosecution hinged its case on the testimony of a river agency big-wig who had no scientific training. He was also the primary landowner of the flooded land, which he didn’t disclose at the time of his testimony. He didn’t have flood insurance so couldn’t have collected for the damage to his land. But he did have homeowners insurance that covered vandalism. Had it been deemed a natural disaster, he’d have become bankrupt. That Scott was convicted for the vandalism, he got his insurance settlement. The emote story is just a little too political.

Richard Batista Gave His Wife A Kidney. Four Years Later, She Filed For A Divorce. During Court, Richard Demanded She Return His Kidney Or Pay $1.5 Million

In 2001, Dawnell Batista was suffering from kidney disease and was in need of a transplant.

Richard, her husband at the time, offered to donate one of his kidneys. The transplant was a success, and Dawnell's health improved significantly.

However, the couple's marriage began to deteriorate, and they eventually divorced in 2005.

During the divorce proceedings, Richard made the surprising demand that Dawnell return the kidney he had donated to her or pay $1.5M in compensation, arguing that it was a gift given in the expectation of love and companionship, which had not been fulfilled.

It was ruled that organs in the United States may not be bought or sold, and donating one is considered a gift.

Richard did not get his kidney back or any compensation.

I wonder if their marriage deteriorated because he was holding his donation over her head, throwing it in to end arguments, saying it proved he loved her more than she loved him, etc. Oh yeah? Well, I gave you a kidney and saved your life, so there!

Quick to assign blame, aren't we? According to news sources, after the transplant she started cheating with his rehabilitation therapist. He arranged sessions of marital counseling and reconciliation, that she skipped. In turn, she accused him of infidelity and went for a divorce. She later refused him visitation rights for his three children. His lawsuit was in response to all of this.

There is an old legal tort called "alienation of affection" which allowed one to go after such things as engagement rings or other things relied on for marriage. It has never been widely accepted (it was a turn of the last century creation) and is not recognized in most states today. But that sounds like the legal theory he was going for.

    Terry Tobias
    Community Member
2 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Engagement rings are in a special category when it comes to giving one. They are given in contemplation of marriage and are considered part of a contract between the parties. If the marriage doesn't take place, the ring goes to the person who purchased it which is usually the one who proposed. If the marriage does take place, the contract has been fulfilled and the recipient gets to keep the ring, even if the couple divorces. A kidney is not the same as a ring; there was no contract made, no "meeting of the minds". And even if there was it would be unenforceable because the kidney was "donated" and freely given as a gift. And finally, as the judge stated, organs can't be sold or purchased in the US. You're correct in saying that "alienation of affection" is seldom used anymore, but when it is, the plaintiff claims that a third party interfered with the marriage and made their spouse lose affection for them, so they'll sue the third party. You'd most often see this in adultery cases.

I believe the world "donation" means that the person in question gives something for the other person for free. So he should have theoretically no right to get it back or to get money for it.

On good days he averaged about five miles an hour along U.S. 18. But about four days into the trip, the engine failed on his mower in West Bend, 21 miles from where he had started in Laurens, Iowa.

Straight spent $250 replacing points, the condenser, plugs, the generator and the starter.

He made it to Charles City, 90 miles from West Bend, when he ran out of money in mid-July, and had to camp out until his next Social Security check arrived.

By Aug. 15, he had made it to within two miles of his brother's house near Blue River, but then his mower broke down again. A farmer helped him push it the rest of the way.

In total, the journey took six weeks, and he inspired the 1999 film ‘The Straight Story.’

Li Jingzhi, A Chinese Woman, Was Reunited With Her Son, Jia Jia, Who Was Kidnapped In 1988

On October 17, 1988, Jia Jia's father, known by his surname Mao, took the two-year-old boy out to play in their neighbourhood in the city of Xi'an.

Mr Mao then walked into a hotel to ask for a cup of water for the thirsty toddler, but when he returned, he realised his son had gone missing.

His mother then spent more than 32 years travelling across all of China, through 20 provinces and hundreds of towns looking for him.

During her quest, she helped reunite 4 different children with their families before eventually finding her own son.

It turns out Jia Jia had been sold to a family in Sichuan in south-western China for 6,000 yuan.

On April 19th 1995, A Man Named Mcarthur Wheeler Robbed A Bank With Lemon Juice On His Face As A Disguise

Since he knew lemon juice could be used as invisible ink, he was sure it would make his face invisible on the CCTV. He smiled at each camera he saw.

Later that night, the police arrested him.

When they showed him the CCTV footage, Wheeler stared in disbelief. He said to the officers "but I wore the juice."

In 2015, Aitabdel Salem, A 41-Year-Old From Queens, Spent 5 Months In Jail At Rikers Island, One Of The Country's Most Notorious Prisons, Not Knowing That His Bail Was Just $2

Salem was initially jailed on a $25,000 bail for allegedly attacking a police officer who was arresting him on charges of shoplifting on November 21, 2014.

Prosecutors for the case, however, failed to land an indictment, and a judge ordered Salem's release on November 28, 2014, just one week after his arrest.

Salem, however, still had to pay two $1 bail charges for two unrelated tampering and mischief charges.

The only problem: Salem didn't know just $2 could set him free. He remained in the overcrowded prison until May 2015.

I watched a documentary that had an episode about Rikers Island, it’s not the prison guards that control inside the prison but ‘trusted’ inmates that even get batons and decide who stays where and what jobs you get. Probably the reason why. Prison guards aren’t really welcome inside

In 2001, Actor Mark Ruffalo Had A Realistic Dream That He Had A Brain Tumour

Despite no previous signs, he went to see a doctor due to the vividness of his dream.

The doctor booked him in for a CAT scan & discovered that Ruffalo did indeed have a brain tumor behind his ear, which was subsequently removed.

Ruffalo addressed the issue in 2011 with W magazine stating: “You just deal with it. You go on. I’m fine now, I only lost my hearing in one ear. I see it as kind of a gift in a weird way. Your priorities become very clear. My relationship to acting became very clear.”

Meanwhile a friend of mine spent 17 years begging doctors to figure out why she was always having cramps only to be dismissively told to lose weight (she wasn’t overweight to begin with), and by the time someone took her seriously she had full-blown uterine cancer.

For all the "rich and famous" comments: Mr. Ruffalo had the tumor in 2001. Although he had appeared in quite a few movies & TV shows prior to the surgery, he did not become a popular/famous actor until appearing in "The Avengers" in 2012.

I think Ruffalo was pretty well known prior to Avengers, especially for his rom coms, but that was still after 2001. It should be noted that Selma Blair was having obvious MS symptoms for years before being taken serious which tracks with statistics regarding the dismissal of women's symptoms in the US. So even fairly well known actresses experience dismissal as well. Honestly though Ruffalo got lucky he was taken seriously.

Mark had that dream while filming a movie where he'd become friends with the set doctor. The set doctor was on the board at the local hospital and set Mark up with the CAT scan, so this was a friend pulling some strings.

This actually makes more sense because even with the best doctor, they aren't normally going to send a patient for a CAT scan with absolutely no symptoms and based solely on a dream. Even the place doing the scan would normally require a potential diagnosis based on symptoms, not a dream.

She approached hunters in the jungle, and they sold her to a brothel. It doesn't sound like she wanted rescue so much as wanted contact with other humans. She escaped the brothel, lived on the streets for awhile, and ended up enslaved as a domestic worker by a mafia family. She was then rescued by a woman from that situation. Her life has turned out pretty well, so I imagine she is glad she left the jungle, although she didn't say. Sounds like things went pretty well with the monkeys, though, so at least that part of her ordeal sounds like something she doesn't regret. She says she was abandoned for unknown reasons by the two adults who abducted her. She recalls being grabbed from behind when outside playing, apparently with other children, as she remembers hearing them, and saw a hand and handkerchief in her face. She says she was then taken into the jungle and abandoned there. She remembers nothing from before the abduction. There was a convict in colonial Australia who was sentenced to hang for committing a further crime after being deported here (I think he murdered a particularly cruel guard or something like that). They tried to hang him three times, and each time something went wrong. The trapdoor jammed, the rope snapped, the trapdoor jammed again... after the third failure they finally said "you know what, f**k it, clearly the good Lord wants him to live. Congratulations, you're off the hook". It's been a while but if I recall he subsequently escaped and was never seen again.

Ann Hodges Shows Off Her Bruise After Being Hit By A Meteorite, 1954

Ann Hodges Shows Off Her Bruise After Being Hit By A Meteorite, 1954

In Sylacauga, Alabama in 1954, Ann Hodges was napping on her couch, when a softball-size hunk of black rock broke through the ceiling, bounced off her radio console, and hit her in the thigh, leaving a very large bruise.

A geologist working in the area was called to the scene and determined the object was a meteorite weighing 8.5 pounds and measuring seven inches in length.

Ann Elizabeth Hodges is the first documented case of a human struck by a meteorite.

In 1863, Jacob Miller, A Union Army Soldier From The 9th Indiana Infantry, Survived Being Shot In The Head During The Civil War

On Sept. 19, 1863, during the battle of Chickamauga, a musket ball pierced him between the eyes, he fell backward and was left for dead on the battlefield.

He distinctly recalled his captain say, “It’s no use to remove poor Miller, for he is dead.”

Miller relayed his story and personal experiences in an interview he gave to a Joliet, Illinois, newspaper in 1911:

“At last, I became conscious and raised up in a sitting position. Then I began to feel my wound," Miller recalled. "I found my left eye out of its place and tried to place it back, but I had to move the crushed bone back as together as near together as I could first. Then I got the eye in its proper place. I then bandaged the eye the best I could with my bandana.”

Miller had been reported dead by his captain, and his name was printed in the newspapers among the killed. Two months later, friends and family finally received word from Miller that he was alive.

He received a pension from the government and could not work because of his wound. He married and had a son.

phineas gage, born in july of 1823, 13 sep 1848, he was working on building a railroad. an explosion went off, and a 3.5 foot iron shot through cleanly through his skull. he got up and was walking around. the doctor was able to touch his fingers through the hole! phineas died in may 1860. for those 12 years, he was able to talk to others completely, with a little stutter and had some emotional control issues. his skull and the iron rod are now in the smithsonian institute.

This Oak Door Belonging To Westminster Abbey Is The Oldest Door In Great Britain

It has been standing for over 950 years, dating back to the reign of Edward the Confessor in the 1050s. The door was made from a single oak tree.

Yes. That just means that all of the planks have been confirmed to have come from the same tree, not that the tree made only one door and nothing else. The door has been resized in its history though, and is thought to have originally been up to nine feet high at the apex of its original arch.

I've read about this; it's fascinating. It's a gene mutation in whippets, a racing breed, and the affected dogs are called "bully whippets." With only one copy of the mutant gene, the dogs have an advantage on the race track. Two copies of the mutant gene results on a dog as above, with so much excess muscle that they can't be raced at all. But because one copy is desirable, the gene is kept around.

Yeah, I've read that too. A duplication of the mutant myostatin gene, rather than a myostatin deficiency as stated in the OP.

If they don't have to pay for a home and all the bills that come with one, or a car and its own associated expenses, one can live well enough on the road.

Bicycles are hugely popular for transportation in Tokyo, as well. A friend of mine went there on a business trip some years back and showed pictures of endless bicycles lined up, with no open spaces, along every street. They also have bicycle parking lots full of bicycles.

No such a thing as "miracle". The owners renovated the house in 2021, replacing the fire-prone asphalt shingles with a corrugated metal roof with a properly done insulation and air pocket. They installed fire resistant coating and new glass/metal glazing. They kept a clean property with minimal vegetation growth and a stone perimeter. Being on the edge of the block, close to a parking lot and without flammable stuff on the rest of the property it received heat from only one side, minimizing exposure. They greatly helped their luck.

Imagine that you spend a good amount of money to get good, fireproof roof, another good money to make sure it is properly installed, make anti-fire trench and keep the area clean just in case of fire. Then a wildfire happens and people say "oh, you were just lucky".

    Jrog

Everybody. People who ascribe any positive life event to a "miracle" are less prone to take action to make that "miracle" outcome likely. This has a widespread windfall on society, perpetrating the myth that you can be careless because when something good happens it's just from luck or some ineffable intervention. The whole faith healing charlatan business relies on that simple concept, and routinely leads to deadly outcomes for the less smart and the more gullible when they replace tried and tested cures with some snake oil or prayer.

Right. This is like that Texas house after Hurricane Ike. The owners of that house went through Hurricane Andrew in south Florida. They moved to Texas and had their house built to the Dade County building code put into place after Andrew. It was the only house on their barrier island to survive. Many people thought this picture was a hoax. https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.houstonpublicmedia.org%2Farticles%2Fnews%2F2013%2F09%2F13%2F207390%2Fremembering-hurricane-ike-in-photos%2F&psig=AOvVaw2L879dypZSJNrJMcl_TUY7&ust=1695131480644000&source=images&cd=vfe&opi=89978449&ved=2ahUKEwij96P_prSBAxVOQTABHa6YB14QjRx6BAgAEAw

During a bout of pleurisy in his 50s, he ordered his nurse to cover him from head to toe in the substance, and soon recovered.

He lived to be 96 and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, New York City.

It would have been easier to cremate him than bury him. Vaseline (other than being really good to cover your feet in before a long hike) is also highly flammable. Put some on a piece of cotton and put a match to it. So easy to make a campfire... 😂

I saw something like this during a storm surge from a hurricane when living in Florida. Fire ants made rafts of themselves so they could rescue the queen and eggs. If they got to your house, they would come inside or get on you if you were wading through the water to get to your car, which was parked on higher ground. Their stings are brutal!

You should see a backyard inground swimming pool after torrential rains. Worms need to breath and can't underground when its saturated so they come to the surface, looking for air. Then they move across your pool deck until they fall into the pool. I've come out in the morning and found literally hundreds of earthworms dead on the bottom of my pool. Ick. And not a nice cleanup job either.

The regurgitation bit is interesting. Yellow Jackets (and maybe other wasps) like dead meat but AFAIK they just eat it. They don't seem to like fresh meat. So they will often show up at a BBQ but if you watch them they will land on meat - check it out - but then leave without eating it. But if it is something dead they will eat it. One time I saw a yellow jacket actually eating my meat. Chicken I think, possibly pork. (forget). Not sure if he was really hungry or it was a commentary on my cooking.

Here in CA. we get yellow jackets, a type of hornet that lives underground, loves meat and has ruined picnics, BBQs and outdoor weddings. If there's a corpse of an animal not buried, or buried shallow, they will build their nest inside it. Including a human body left in the woods. Been there with my Search and Rescue outfit. Using our K9's we were looking for a murder victim said to have been buried just off a road in a heavily wooded area. Dog's found the scent easily but the yellowjackets attacked the dogs and us. We had to clear out until dark when the eradication team took care of the hornets so the body could be exhumed. We always carry diphenhydramine to dose the dogs if they get stung.

In 2011, Pacific Islanders Uein Buranibwe, And Temaei Tontaake Got Lost At Sea After Their Gps Malfunctioned

They spent 33 days adrift, being dragged over 500 miles across the ocean.

On their 33rd day, the pair finally ran aground on a remote atoll, named Namdrik, which is home to just 600 people.

It was at this atoll that they discovered that Temaei Tontaake’s uncle who had vanished at sea 50 years earlier had washed up on this same atoll.

Unable to contact home to tell them he was okay, he stayed and married into the community.

His uncle Bairo had since died, but his descendants were still living on the island.

I work retail, and we could definitely use one of these in the break room, since we have to deal with the public all day. However, it is usually in the rules that you can't drink on the job. Pity.

On November 17, 2012, José Salvador Alvarenga, A Salvadoran Fisherman, Embarked On A Two-Day Fishing Expedition Into The Pacific Ocean From A Small Fishing Village In Mexico

On November 17, 2012, José Salvador Alvarenga, A Salvadoran Fisherman, Embarked On A Two-Day Fishing Expedition Into The Pacific Ocean From A Small Fishing Village In Mexico

Accompanying José was Ezequiel Córdoba, a 22-year-old day worker who tragically did not make it back to shore when their ship set sail.

During their journey, the two men encountered a powerful storm that left them incapacitated. Their boat's engine failed, and lacking paddles and sufficient food supplies, they faced a dire situation.

For a staggering 14 months, their boat aimlessly drifted across the Pacific Ocean. Tragically, Ezekiel succumbed to starvation after just four months into the journey.

José, determined to survive, resorted to consuming anything he could catch using the only tool he possessed—a knife. His desperate diet included raw fish, turtles, small sharks, and sea birds.

In his struggle to stay hydrated, José resorted to extreme measures. He resorted to drinking turtle blood and even his own urine to sustain himself.

It wasn’t until January 30, 2014, that José was discovered naked on Marshall Island, clutching only a knife in his hand.

Throughout his harrowing ordeal, he had drifted for an astounding 438 days, covering a distance of over 10,000 kilometers. To put this into perspective, the Earth's diameter measures 12,742 kilometers.

Turtles are the big one. Turtles will swim up to a boat, and if you can flip it onboard it will give you food for weeks - info from the book "survive the savage sea" about a family of four people stuck for months in a rowboat after their ship was sunk by Orcas.

Clarification on the death of Ezequiel from Wikipedia: "According to Alvarenga, Córdoba lost all hope around four months into the voyage after becoming sick from the raw food, and eventually died from starvation by refusing to eat. Alvarenga has said that he contemplated suicide for four days after Córdoba died, but his Christian faith prevented him from doing so. He related that Córdoba made him promise not to eat his corpse after he died, so he kept it on the boat. He sometimes spoke to the corpse and after six days, fearing he was going insane, he threw it overboard."

Between 2013 And 2015, Evaldas From Lithuania Received $99m From Facebook And $23m From Google By Forging Invoices For Goods They Hadn't Ordered

Evaldas had set up an incorporated company in Latvia that had more or less the same name as Quanta Computer Inc, a Taiwan-based computer and electronic hardware manufacturing firm.

But rather than paying for legitimate services, they were instead wiring money over to bank accounts in Latvia and Cyprus that were controlled by Evaldas.

To explain the massive influx of money to the banks, he used forged invoices, contracts and letters that appeared to have been signed by executives and agents from Google and Facebook.

In 2017, aged 50, Evaldas was caught by Lithuanian authorities before being extradited to New York.

He pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud and in 2019 he was sentenced to 60 months in prison for his criminal scheme.

This is not what they are going to use if they are threatened though, don't worry about these, harmless. They are very much unlikely to bite you, they have a much better defence mechanism - they flick hairs at your eyes; the hairs are barbed and nasty as heck.

What a waste of wood - not to mention the heat, smoke and sparks endangering the area. It is a tradition in the Netherlands, too. Every year Duindorp and Scheveningen are competing in who builds the highest one on the beach, to celebrate New Year. 2018 it went totally out of hand, with the result that Scheveningen faced a serious danger of burning down. They made a "mistake in estimating the risks" (standard Dutch excuse for "we were utterly stupid and well aware of the dangers, but ignored it deliberately and do not want to be held accountable for the consequences"), because "suddenly" the wind blew stronger and from another direction than assumed by the builders. City Council didn't dare to stop them lighting it, because the people there are known to become extremely violent when they don't get what they want. They would have set more cars on fire than they usually do around that date. Scheveningen was drowned in a rain of sparks, which caused lots of fires and severe other damages

His friends and family filled the store, masquerading as fellow shoppers and staff to create an authentic shopping atmosphere.

It is something he never really got to do though, since his fame started when he was a little kid...still it would have been slightly more "authentic" if they'd just gotten actors to play regular people, rather than friends and family he could recognize.

Didn’t the Kardashians do this? Seems so out of touch, to turn a ‘normal person’s’ daily life into a sort of theme park attraction for the insanely wealthy. I do feel for MJ though, he never had a chance to experience normal life

I remember being at the Virgin record store when they kicked everyone out in a hurry bc MJ wanted to shop (forum shops @ Caesars Palace circa late 90's). Also saw him when I was a courier dropping off at the Venetian, walked right by me with his small children and entourage, then the masses of ppl right behind (it was so surreal, 2005)

In 2015, A German Man Was Ordered To Split Half His Belongings With His Ex-Wife After Filing For Divorce

In response, he literally began to saw their possessions in half to give to her. He even filmed himself doing it.

In the clip, uploaded by the user “Der Juli,” he can be seen sawing a TV screen, wicker chair, iPhone, bed and even a car in half.

The video’s description, written in German, roughly translates to: “Thank you for 12 ‘beautiful years,’ Laura! You’ve really earned half. Greetings also to my successor.”

FALSE. This was a guerrilla marketing campaign for the German Bar Association. Lots of tabloids picked up the story without checking, as usual. BP, do a sliver of fact checking before posting BS, it literally takes a three-word search on google. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/fur-laura/

It gets done occasionally in the USA for movie props. Not street legal.
