That's what I was thinking! Is it really worth losing any chance of repeat customers and spending additional money on extra packaging just to save a few ounces of the product?
These should be banned by law and it's not just because they are disappointing and robbery. Plastic pollution is serious enough even without tons of packaging to fake the size of some greedy asshole's product.
In Germany each household has to pay for waste collection. Why not let the companies pay for it and the recycling systems/landfills? Plastic packaging would be more expensive than paper packaging. The more packaging was used in comparsion to the size of the product, the more they'd have to pay. I'm pretty sure we would be back to "zero waste" in no time.
Back in the medieval days, bread was so important to the diets of every day people that bakers were given severe consequences for cutting corners. In fact, if you got a dozen buns from a baker, they would throw in an extra one just to prove they weren't trying to swindle the customers, hence the saying "baker's dozen". We need to bring back those kinds of laws for people who try to cheat customers like this.
Particularly disgraceful when it is products aimed at/for kids - that they may even be spending pocket money on. Adults are used to being disappointed by what is actually inside due to packaging.
As long as the product weight or quantity listed on the packaging matches the amount of product inside, all of these package, while being frustrating, are following regulations.

The only way to not get fooled by this shit is to always check the weight/volume of the product that you're buying.
My hubby asked why I always pressed the packages, that's the reasons why. They can't fool me!
This is just sad. The waster of air, plastic, cardboard, glass, you name it. They just make these rip offs to get more business, more money, and dont even care about how people are wasting their money and getting angered by this injustice. (Do I sound official? 😂)

File all of this under "Caveat Emptor". Let the Buyer Beware. Most countries require truth in packaging for weights and mass of food products. If you do not pay attention, you too can purchase a 3/4 empty bag of crisps or a package of sausages where the package is 1/2 empty. Assume nothing, assume they are trying to trick you into paying for more for less. Stop being lazy and not reading, not using your brain. If these business practices offend you, let th ecomanies involved know. No longer purchase their products. Vote with you rmoney. And teach your kids not to be swindled.

This tells you to ALWAYS check the packaging before buying anything and just how much excessive packaging there is used just to make people believe a lie... sad! There ought to be very strict rules about this type of misleading people!

They get away with it because we let them. Always email, demand they refund and if they want the product back, they pay postage. Don't back down. If you get it on Amazon, first demand a refund, then complain to Amazon and then post it under "reviews". Do the same at other sites. We vote for consumer products with our dollars. If we really work to cost them some money and some future buyers, maybe we can make a difference. And WTH, it feels good to be heard.
While i agree that manufacturers can be extremely deceptive and wasteful with the excess packaging, doesn't anyone pay attentions to things like the weight or quantity of what's supposed to be in the package? i absolutely hate it when they do this, but i've always been one to pay more attention to weight/qty, rather than whether it looks like there's more in it or not

What is the saddest to me here these are not only local small businesses, but many of them are huge international corporations like Garnier, Gillette, BIC, Lindt, Hersheys, etc. saving big money on this fraud and they shall be held accountable for it. And this is stupid as well because small companies (pizzas apart) would naturally be happy to sell one piece of their product per person just once, but these big businesses have to be interested in the wide promotion of their product and are doing something the contrary...
I've never understood why people don't read the shelf tags that plainly display the price per ounce. It's very simple. You aren't getting ripped off if you read the label instead of just looking at the picture. Use your brain.
This kind of thing happens all the time. I remember buying a package of chocolate chip cookies when I was a kid. There were a ton of cookies in the package. Now, buying the same name brand of cookies (you know the one!) means getting only 15 damn cookies that are smaller than they used to be.

The simple truth: ... The nations that don't regulate these types of false and misleading packaging are nations that allow corporations to control those regulations. If we're being ripped-off in small ways like these examples, it's a good bet that we're also being ripped-off in much larger ways, by those same corporations.

People remember that over 1/2 of the pictures above are products sold by weight, not # of items in the package. HUGE waste of packaging though. For shame.
It should be obvious to all, that some packaging need to be larger for display purposes, with the more expensive things, then the bottle or jar needs to be kept smaller, but look larger.
Let the law take care of more pressing matters. This one's on us, the consumer. Let your money talk. Watch what you buy, but if they do slip one over on you Take It Back! They'll stop doing it when we stop letting them get away with it.

in europe its indeed rare but i still cant forget the box of loukoumia my brother brought from santorini that contained a small plastic inside the cardboard with 20 tiny loukoumia while the box could contain at least 150 of them, oh well

Let me be completely honest, all these so-called "professional" companies doing things like this? It's the stupidest thing. Most companies today are all about making more money. And there's nothing wrong with that, like it's pretty normal to want to make a buck. But cheating your customers? These companies are more likely lose customers this way. There are actual laws for misleading packaging in other countries. Companies will LOSE MONEY FOR THIS KIND OF FUCKERY. Let's be real, these companies are going to make more money by being honest and giving customers exactly what they pay for, instead of stunting bullshit like this. I rest my case.
I really hate what these companies are doing... It really triggered me the lengths some of the people went to just to make it look like they were providing more of their product, like with the markers and the other packages with center pieces not visible from the outside... pathetic

Glad that here in the Philippines we just commonly encounter this on chips and beauty products. As far as I know we also have the law that companies should clearly states all the information about the product in the packaging and avoid misleading covers. It's unfair for us consumers when they try to cheat us, we don't just pick our money from random places we earned them and also did they think about the amount of waste just to pack one of their products?

This is why we can't have nice things: manufacturers spend more $ on cheat-packaging than they do on the actual products. Ergo, consumers have to spend more to pay for cheat packaging.

I'd bet if the C-level staff of Unilever (a conglomerate that owns a number of the brands I see here) were all arrested from their cozy Connecticut homes and frogmarched to waiting police cars on live TV... eh, what am I saying? No one will be held responsible or accountable. Rich CEOs know to befriend lawmakers.
