We’re all wired differently from each other. One person likely won’t see things the exact same way as another would, and that’s alright.

Some people, however, take things to another level, thanks to their questionable views of the world. And unfortunately, social media has provided a platform that emboldens them to spew their ideas to the rest of the world.

We’ve collected some posts from the Facepalm subreddit, where its 8.1 million members constantly call out the most absurd forms of logic. Feel free to scroll through, but hopefully, it won’t make you lose the remaining faith you have left in the current state of humanity.

To begin digging and figuring out how a person’s sense of logic forms, we sought insights from registered psychotherapist and Health & Happiness founder and clinical director, Kevin Greene. As he told Bored Panda, it begins with a person’s exposure to something.

“For example, if a person enjoys French fries, it is because they have had them and it was a good experience,” he said.

The major problem is the way CEO salary and bonuses are tied to short term goals. It creates perverse incentives. When you tie CEO bonuses to something like stock price, it's easy to justify firing people and lowering costs even if that ends up hurting the company or slowing growth.

Ahh, but quality of evidence is why science exists... because there is insurmountable evidence that aliens and Bigfoot "exist", it's just not scientific.

Greene then explained how a flawed sense of logic begins, stating that it is usually when it remains unchallenged throughout the person’s life. The example he gave is when someone is raised to believe that all people from a particular country are their enemy.

And because they have not had any personal experience living in the said country, they will stick to the beliefs that have been instilled in them, while also rejecting all counterpoints.

There are other bonuses as well. Keep in mind insurance companies don't compete for patients. They complete for companies. Insurance companies can treat patients like c**p, if folks do leave the company find them a replacement patient. That being the case, what do you think those insurance companies are doing to keep the companies they are competing for happy?

Where do you get 4% from? especially when the low ball estimate for Medicare for all in the is 3.2 Trillion a year, the low ball number. That is more than the US Military, All Education Spending, All Medicare and Medicaid, and Social security payments combined.

So, is it possible to put some sense into someone whose logic is decidedly skewed? Greene says it is, but it will take a lot of work. Apart from the increased reliance on social media, a significant challenge would be if this person shares the same beliefs with the people they are close to.

“To have this person change would require them to agree to challenge their beliefs,” he said. “This would require them to be given verifiable information from somebody that they trust.”

This new bill won't do anything. All that will happen is exactly what happens in America - a 'supporters of X' campaign will be organised, and every lobbyist will have employees donate $19,999 per employee on their behalf. The sums won't change at all. It's the same as dodgy businesses only depositing or withdrawing amounts UNDER the 'report these transactions' limit.

Politics is one of the many hot topics that people tend to avoid discussing, especially at the dinner table. Because when one person opens the talks, all logic tends to fly out the window.

It's ironic that the decade Republicans generally wax nostalgic about was the decade when the top tax bracket never went below 90%.

Researchers found that while the participants correctly judged 73% of the arguments, it was heavily influenced by their political views.

"Our biases drive us apart not only in our disagreements about political and ideological worldviews, but also in our understanding of logic itself,” the paper’s lead coauthor Sean Wojcik concluded.

$55.6 billion is total economic output connected to it, not what the parks bring in (this includes nearby hotels, gas to drive to the parks, nearby eateries, etc). That is a lot of economic benefit that leads to tax revenue but that is not the National Parks a year. $26.4 billion of the 55.6 is what is spent on the communities near the park. Actual park revenue is $1.1 billion. So when you look that it directly brings in 1.1b to a cost of 3.5b, it looks like a loss on the economy, however when you add it to the estimated $2.71 billion in income taxes related to all the economic activity, it is a net gain for the govt, and when you look at all the benfits in brings, and how much taxes from those nearby areas and other revenue sources, it is a very good thing for the US.

It also doesn’t help that polarized news outlets (CNN and FOX News in America) and social media seemingly divide people further. According to psychology professor Dr. Keith Payne, these platforms make it easier to communicate and disseminate polarization.

“Social media is very good at spreading outrage, and moral outrage in particular is something that makes a post more likely to go viral,” Dr. Payne said in an interview with the American Psychological Association

Of course I apply for the money, what else?

Confirmation bias seems to be the main culprit here. Simply put, it’s a way of selective thinking wherein our brains favor information that aligns with our preconceptions while also disregarding every contradiction, regardless of how logical they are. And according to Dr. Payne, it can reinforce a flawed way of thinking.

“Sometimes it can be confirmation bias that serves the goal of reassuring us that we’re a good person,” he explained. “It’s changing our opinion and taking on the new opinion.”

The lack of logic brought on by divisiveness could be due to the feeling that we are in “survival mode,” according to organizational psychologist Dr. Laura Gallaher. In her interview with Forbes, she said the negative news cycles only make things worse, and it is when optimism and positivity are much needed.

“We need to remember that we can still thrive in this environment,” she said, highlighting the importance of “shifting to thrive mode” and eventually retaking control of your thoughts and attitude towards the world around you.

I will have to work till I die, because my pension won't be enough, and the money saved all these years is worth so little due to inflation. There will be no golden years. All I can do now is hope my place of employment keeps me on even when I am a little old lady in my 90s (my family has a tendency to live into their late 90s/early 100s).

You're close, but not really. Social Security is insurance. It's required, like home owners insurance is if a mortgage company still owns your house. It covers people who are too young, too old, or too sick to work, so such people don't starve (barely). In the 1930's(?), we decided that 65 was the age that people become too old to work. It's become a complicated system because people are living longer, healthier lives and also because some people have been figuring out all the ways its system can be gamed. Plugging all the holes makes it complicated.

Spent ridiculous amounts of energy defending the choice to continue being anti-vax "It wasn't even small pox that killed them. It was a secondary infection." I had serious whooping cough aged 6 months, but survived. (Pertussis was not generally given until after 6/12) I vaccinated my kids, of course. I read this and thought that if her 1 month old had died, then as the vaccine isn't given till 16 weeks, it was very sad, but unrelated to 'anti vaxx'. I looked up the vaccine schedule (UK) and was very surprised to learn that the vaccine is offered to pregnant women early second trimester to precisely avoid early deaths. So yeah, she's a complete womanslaughterer.

Funny how people in the US are happy to have firefighters, police, military, governments, road repairs, snow removal, all paid for through taxation, but let anyone mention health care and they start to hyperventilate.

All those who blame OP for signing it: could you tell a European whose kids could study for free in her home country, if there are better student loans to get? Not with parent support, not with parent's big house to borrow against, I mean for a child from a low income household?

No they didn't. Most of these kids had idiot parents that insisted they go to college, but didn't teach the kids anything about economics or finance. When an 18 year old decides to pay $100k for a degree that promises 50k a year job, their parents have failed them.

The Wife is the uber maga one who is still maga while in ICE detention ""I will support him until the day I die. He's making America great again.". She is a Christian from Iran, who had her green card revoked in 2008 bc she did a crime and served jail time, but was allowed to stay bc she would face persecution in Iran. She has an upcoming court date and thinks bc she has an American husband, has no crimes since 2008, has a business, IRS tax receipts, and she is a devout Christian, that she will be allowed to stay as a refugee. Several Maga Christian groups are providing legal help.
