30 People In This Online Group Share Lesser-Known Secondary Uses For Everyday Products
Usually products are designed and created with a specific purpose in mind. They are perfected to deal with a particular issue or they are just commonly used for one thing. If you need your windows cleaned, there’s a specific product for that. You use salt to season your food and usually use bleach to take out stains from white clothing.
But all these products can be used for different intentions. A person whose nickname is secondhandsisters probably had that thought and went to Reddit to ask people “What are some lesser-known secondary uses for an everyday product?” And that created a big and very useful thread with people sharing so many products that don’t have to be used just for what they were initially intended to.

Do you have any advice that really works on how to use everyday items or products? Tell us about it in the comments and then upvote the answers that you will try out yourself!

Condensed milk for those with chronic vomiting. Not only is it great for cooking, but I had a pharmacist tell me about adding some water till it is the consistency of thick soup. Get the person to sip small amounts of it slowly. It helps line the oesophagus to reduce vomiting, and allowing medication time to hit the stomach and work. Also provides much needed sugar. I’ve used it on kids and adults and it’s worked a treat every time
Good to know. My mom always used Jello water. Diluted about same maybe a little thinner. But this was used after the violent bout when nothing stays down. This coats stomach & hydrates.
My mom tried the jello water thing for me once, didn't work on me...we had a very large red stain on our couch for ages after that.
Load More Replies...In this situation, it's safer to buy the thickeners in the drug aisle designed to help the elderly to stir into drinks. Then you won't be risking the effects of large amounts of sugar or milk product you'd get from condensed milk.
This could work but then it would make things worse for the majority of people. Milk is not easy to digest.
Lining the esophagus won't really stop vomiting -- a mechanism triggered either via the vomiting center in the brain, via the stomach or by mechanical blockage of the gastrointestinal system.
Mmm what about if you're lactose intolerant or don't drink milk? What could I use?
add salt to your hand wash to get gasoline smell off
Love,
Dad
And salt (or suger) mixed with washing up liquid is great for getting machine oil off your hands.
Put the soap on dry and rub it around it doesn't matter what kind of soap cheap hand soap works. The key is put it on dry hands before rinsing.
Load More Replies...My dad was in an auto shop once and nearly got kicked out with this tip. The auto shop was part of a chain and did a lot of their own brand products. They sold what they called "Sugar Soap" in little 5 ml bottles for €4.99. Total rip off. My dad saw a man going to buy some and told him "don't do that, all it is is liquid soap and sugar. And they are charging you a fiver for it. Go to the pound shop and by a 1 litre of cheap washing up liquid and a bag of sugar and keep them in your garage. When you need to wash your hands after working on your car put some of the washing up liquid onto your hands and mix in half a teaspoon of sugar and rub them into your hands and then wash it off. Your hands will be spotless. Works every time." The shop manager was standing behind his counter looking daggers at dad. The man dad was talking to put the little bottle of sugar soap back, thanked dad and left the shop. My dad always did hate to see anybody ripped off.
I really hate it when my hands smell like union!
Load More Replies...Salt and a bit of cooking oil, massage into your hands, rinse, and they feel great afterwards!
Load More Replies...Salt/water slushie is also helpful when you accidentally superglue your fingers together. That was a fun day
Nail polish remover or straight forward acetone is good with superglue accidents I believe. I've only read this though, not personally tested it!
Load More Replies...I love the smell of gasoline! Spent countless hours in the garage with dad as a kid.
I carry a garlic press in my purse so that when I'm out at a restaurant I can make a small amount of baby food out of any steamed vegetable.
I hope baby is also with you at the restaurant. Otherwise, I guarantee that all the waitstaff are wondering about you. =)
That's probably lower on this very list, "with a fork people don't only pick up stuff, ... ".
Load More Replies...Go for baby led weaning. Solids from the start. My kids eat chicken drum sticks and spring rolls from 6 months.
I didn't know there was a name for it, but I feel like this is common among Asians. I've seen a 2yo Vietnamese kid use chopsticks like an uncle. And he would eat everything and loved balut. It was astounding and made me think that we underestimate children a lot
Load More Replies...She carries it all the time though? Just in case she goes to a restaurant? Thats just weird.
I already have a garlic press, now to find a baby in need of mashed food....
As a mechanic, a flat-head screwdriver is a pry-bar, package opener, square-head (Robertson) screwdriver, hose-pick, a punch, test-lead, electrical bridge, scraper, chisel, and least importantly, a flat-head screwdriver.
I inherited some kind of multi-purpose tool from my grandpa. It's basically a flat steel on a handle and became one of my favourite tools within days.
"Every tool is a hammer...except the screwdriver, that's a chisel."
Hmm... just tried it. Must admit I find the pointy bit on a nail file a wee bit more effective but each to their own!
Load More Replies...Be careful using a screwdriver for other purposes. I broke one using it as a pry bar and another using it as a chisel. Some of them have hardened tips making it more brittle.
Corn starch is a good blood coagulant if you need to stop bleeding
Try to coat it a bit, but yes. Great for diaper rash on babies, too.
Load More Replies...Great for if you accidentally get the quick while trimming your pet's nails
gonna try: i use blood thinners and turn out looking like a horror movie if im not awake enough while shaving
Salt is too. Doesn't hurt like you'd think and really accelerates clotting.
Stings like hell, but only a few seconds. Works like a charm.
Load More Replies...I use corn starch instead of talcum powder. Just put some in a shaker dispenser and use as talcum powder during your post-shower routine.
Corn starch is actually what baby powder is made from now, as talc has been found to be carcinogenic... All modern baby powder is now talc free. (Lots of law suits!)
Load More Replies...If you hurt your mouth and it bleeds or even bite your tongue. A small spoonful of sugar stops the bleeding almost immediately
We used cornstarch on the kitties nails when we trimmed them. if it nicked the quick, we'd dip the digit into a smidge of it. worked like a charm
Our dog was having a zoomie up and down the hall and I noticed on the last trip (only because I stopped him) that he was leaving a blood spot with each footprint, looking closely we found he had ripped a claw down past the quick. Being a weekend we called the On Call vet, she told us to put a lot of corn starch on a cotton ball and tape it tightly to the foot. It worked.
Clean mascara wands are used in animal shelters to soothe the animals by brushing, and to remove fly eggs and larva from fur.
yes. they ask for it. Think bats, squirrels etc.
Load More Replies...Clean, new mascara wands are also great for scrubbing the tiny beak holes in hummingbird feeders!
Old toothbrushes are good for brushing small kittens. It's the same size and texture as their mother's tongue.
I have a very tiny dog and when she was a very small puppy I used a toothbrush for brushing her fur on her face.
Load More Replies...I don't recall ever using this when I worked at a shelter. I wish we had though, it would have been much softer than flea combs.
The mascara wands may be suggested because they're softer. I've seen baby weasels at a shelter - they look like big fuzzy caterpillars. I can imagine a comb could scratch them very easily, especially if they move.

If you have a landline telephone, the dial tone is a concert F.
By holding the phone to your ear and your finger on the first fret of the first string of your guitar (for example) you can use the dial tone as a reference pitch and accurately tune up without a tuner
Halfway down the page, and we finally have a surprise.
Load More Replies...Ha! Ages ago I took guitar lessons, and my teacher (who really was a virtuoso guitarist) used the sound the "hold" button on his phone made to tune. I forget what note it was, but he said it was pitch perfect.
So what note is it when it makes that annoying phone off the hook noise?
There is also an A above the F. Not sure if it’s 440, but I tune my guitar to the A in a pinch.
I learned music before smart phones, and we'd have to carry around a tuner and metronome. This would've been a cool trick back then!
In Canada it’s an F and an A at the same time. Harder to tune your instrument with itbut I still did it when there was nothing else available

Coffee grounds are quite versatile. Among other things, you can use them for:
A soil additive to improve the pH balance for plants
Place them in a refrigerator to neutralize odors
Scour pots and pans
De-icing your steps and driveway
An ant repellent
An exfoliating scrub for your skin
I find the smell of coffee grounds gross, so for me that would be like pouring gasoline on a fire...
Load More Replies...Cats don't like the smell of coffee grounds either, so putting them in your plants packs a double whammy if they're messing around with them.
I deter the neighbors’ cats with coffee grounds. No more cat poo in my yard
Load More Replies...Coffee grounds are highly acidic, they will lower the pH of your soil, making it more acidic. As a consequence, they can be beneficial to acid-loving plants. Coffee grounds can contribute nitrogen to soil. Nitrogen is a key nutrient for plant growth and development, earthworms love newspaper and coffee grounds
taught in funeral directing school to put in a casket if the body smells during a visitation
It is really great for a peeling -I even use it once in a while mixed in my shampoo.
discourage slugs and snail. I dump the whole filterful outside + behind potted plants, it simply looks like soil and the little hooligans go for easier pickings
Hair conditioner as shaving cream
When I got my first razor my mom didn’t give me shaving cream. She said it would clog the razor. I did one stroke and immediately realized that my skin is REALLY sensitive. I’ve been using conditioner since. It did get stuck, but I just used some water to get it out no problem.
Load More Replies...It moisturizes your skin better too. I haven't bought shaving cream in over a decade
Men’s shaving cream for shaving the legs. I know that they also sell “women’s leg shaving cream” but it’s less common and expensive.
Plain soap works too -- rub a lot on your hands, then work it into a foamy lather between your hands. Rub on wet face for 20 - 30 seconds to let it soak in and soften the hair before shaving.
I do this when I'm on vacation. One less thing to pack.
Load More Replies...I found that one. My GF used all my shaving cream so I used her conditioner.
I'm at the age when I appreciate reminders of all the things I knew once and forgot!
Load More Replies...Hand lotion mixed with a little bit of water to shave. Just rinse the razor with hot water after each use. When done, no need to rinse the skin off, just rub any remaining lotion in, the skin is smooth but also hydrated from the hand lotion.
I have very short hair son have no use for conditioner, so liquid soap is my way to go.
Load More Replies...I never buy shaving gel any more. Just conditioner or lotion. My skin is so much happier for it.
Any kind of cooking oil will easily get pine sap off of your hands. Just use it like soap.
Good to get makeup off too. Especially eye makeup.i use olive oil on my skin all over.
Olive oil gets rid of cosmetics (at least on skin). Nordstrom made some money off this knowledge.
Oil displaces oil in general, if you don’t have make-up remover, use some olive oil on a piece of cotton to take your make-up off which will also moisturise the skin along
That's really simple and we learn it on chemistry. Similar solvents works on similar stuff. Glue and sap are apolar substances, they need an apolar solvent - oil in this case.
I wrap those thick rubber bands (you know the ones that come around broccoli crowns) around tight jar lids to make them grippy and easy to undo.
this is neat to. But what works great woth jars for me: sticking a tableknife or back of a teaspoon between the edge of the lid and just twist it a little to break the vacuum, and then you can twist of the lid easily.
I stopped that when a jar shattered. Spaghetti sauce and broken glass combo is a nightmare to clean up.
Load More Replies...My grandma showed me how to tap the edge of the lid on the floor until the seal gives way. It's surprisingly easy!
You can also do it on the counter. Tap gently, after two or three taps the vacuum wil give way
Load More Replies...you can also use these rubber bands to take out a stripped out screw. Its handy
Or just pop the lid a bit with a fork so air can get in. Easy opening after that.
I like using the rubbery shelf liner stuff, and you can find it at the dollar store.
Blue Dawn dish soap works really well on clothing stains.
I spent years in the Marina Industry and it works really well for zipping people down water slides as well.
The person who posted this probably had a Dawn sponsorship lol
Load More Replies...yup, I use dish soap for oily stains regularly (same as in picture, directly to the stain) and none of laundry washing powder/pods/whatever can beat this
Fairy (sold in Spain, don't know about other places) works miracles too
I think fairy is the European name for the same product. (More or less, from what google tells me. It's green and not blue, though)
Load More Replies...As well as cleaning oil from oil spills off of birds and other feathered or furry sea animals—-first discovered in 1989 after the Exxon Valdez oil spill off Alaska.
Just don’t use it to ash your car with, dish washing liquid cuts grease, and will take away the wax coating on your car
Dawn dish soap is toxic because it contains ingredients that are harmful. The Environmental Working Group, otherwise known as EWG, rates Dawn as a “D” for using several harmful ingredients in its recipe, including methylisothiazolinone which is noted for causing acute aquatic toxicity and also has been linked to lung and nerve damage. Moreover, Dawn dish soap contains dyes, synthetic fragrances and 1,4-dioxane which is known to be a contaminant in groundwater.
Vagisil for chafing. It's antibacterial, lubricating, and an anesthetic. I learned that in the army
I could have sworn it is anti-fungal not antibacterial. Vagisil is used for yeast infections in women. Yeast infections are a fungus and happen because of an imbalance between bacterial and yeast that causes an increase in yeast. This is why many women get a yeast infection after a course of antibiotics- it kills all the good bacteria in the women's vagina. Now if Vagisil was used for bacterial vaginosis (which it isn't) then it would contain an antibacterial component.
Also cures ringworm! We were tearing out an inground pool in the backyard....everyone who helped ended up with it from the soil. This is what the doctor told us to use. Worked like a charm!
Now I had to google "ringworm" since I was confused how it would help against parasites. But ringworm is a fungal infection, not actually a worm. Good to know!
Load More Replies...Since Vagisil is a topic anaesthetic, it works wonders for any skin irritation or pain. It's definitely one of the most used items in my first aid kit - has far more uses than just downstairs!
Vagisil makes an anti-chafing product. It has the EXACT same ingredients as Smashbox primer. Now you know what to do with all those stupid samples!
Vinegar is amazing. It can be used as a cheap household cleaner, refresh the coffee maker, and it can cure foot fungus and jock itch.
Please note that this refers to white vinegar (white wine or cider vinegar can work too) and definitely NOT balsamic like the picture. I use diluted vinegar with a few drops of essential oil as a spray for the garbage bin, and you can put it in the washing machine to get rid of musty smells in clothes. I always have a massive jug of white vinegar in the house, it's very useful. Oh, and for cleaning glass.
Yeah who's the idiot who came up with that picture for this? Somebody needs to have a talk with BoredPanda's graphics editor.
Load More Replies...This. White vinegar can practically replace any other cleaning product and it's generally cheaper (and somewhat less toxic). Don't forget sodium bicarbonate (aka baking soda) too.
Similarly, a lemon works wonders for cleaning water retainers and microwaves. In case of microwaves, mix the juice of one lemon with warm water in a cup, carefully heat in the microwave and then you can easily wash any food specks off the microwave walls. One more lesser known trick: If you accidentally burned milk, let the stove/pot cool, heat some deepfrost spinach, put it on the burned parts and let it sit for about 20 min, then wipe off. It’s a bit messy, but I have yet to find a better cleaning agent for burned milk :)
Might be a little gross, but it's also an amazing retainer cleaner! Just make sure to thoroughly rinse with water afterwards ofc
Probably better not use the pictured balsamico vinegar, though...
Load More Replies...I restored a rusty, very old french wrench keeping it in vinegar for one day. Took maybe 80% of the rust.
Vinegar and dish soap are really the only legit way to clean a shower door.
I mix white vinegar & Dawn dish soap for that - spray it on, let it sit for a few minutes & wipe clean! It's amazing!

Your library card can do a lot more than let you borrow books.
It allows you to take free courses on Lynda, or learn a language, and even stream movies. A lot of libraries also have video game rentals, which a lot of people don't know about.
Very much so...my library card is a piece of printed paper I show to the librarian so she let's me take a book home.
Load More Replies...Not true! It allows you to bring them back in the library too without thinking that you stole them!
Load More Replies...I've been to libraries that have started collections of things. You can borrow an air fryer, lawnmower, ukulele, etc. They're really cool. And free.
Ours also has a seed library and lets you borrow fancy cake pans.
Load More Replies...You can also get a free app called Overdrive that allows you to listen to book, download mp3s.
I believe Overdrive is being sunseted, it is being replaced by Libby (by overdrive). Have you had any issues using Overdrive recently?
Load More Replies...Kanopy is a fantastic streaming service. If your library is affiliated with it, you get 6 free streams per month, and the children’s programming is unlimited. Amazing selection of foreign, classic, and independent films.
Kanopy is super popular at our library, to the point that Kanopy was trying to find out why such a small library had the usage statistics 4x the average for our population size. :)
Load More Replies...If in the USA, see if your library supports the app Hoopladigital. Your can check out audiobooks, digital books and videos with your library card.
Libby is free resource for books and magazines... just input your library card number. Read 200 books during first couple weeks of lockdown. It was great.
Bottom shelf cheap VODKA.... Put it in a spray bottle and squirt in on your bathroom walls to kill mold, squirt it on clothes to remove any odors, use it to clean mirrors, glass, windows.
If you do put vodka on clothes, you will smell like vodka. Is that a win?
Also, if you have a pitcher filter, you can turn bottom shelf vodka into better quality vodka - literally the only difference between most high end vodkas and the cheap stuff is how many times it has been filtered. I'm not saying one trip through a Britta is enough to turn Heaven Hill into Ketel One, but you'll get there eventually.
Peroxide gets blood stains out
baking powder does the job as well. had some bad blood stains on my favourite pants due to bleeding while pregnant. when I came home after an emergency c-section I restored said pants the their former glory. but you have to put it in cold water beforehand.
I went to a Montessori school, so there was usually a mix of 6-9 year olds in my class. In 1st grade, the oldest girl (she was held back so she was 10) got her period on a field trip to the woods. We asked the teacher what got rid of blood stains, and she said to do this. We did that and since NOBODY knew what to do about her constant bleeding, she stuffed leaves down there. Turned out those leaves A) did nothing, and B) were POISON IVY! Yeah that was a weird trip.
Load More Replies...Peroxide will get rid of those annoying fruit fly/fungus gnats that are in houseplant soil. They lay their eggs just under the surface, especially if your brought outside plants indoors for the winter. Boom, flies all over. They love wet soil. Let the plants dry out so if you put your finger in the soil, it's not wet any more. Put 1 part peroxide and 3 parts water. Water the plants with this. The peroxide will bubble and fizz a bit, just like it does on skin wounds. As it does this, the bubbles blow apart the gnat larvae. You can also put this mixture into a spray bottle and mist your plant leaves. It won't harm the plants - it actually aerates the soil and is good for them
Oh nice! I really could have used this tip during the great fungus gnat infestation of 2019. Got them through a contaminated bag of soil from the hardware store and it was a pesky few months
Load More Replies...Also saliva. Spit. Weird fact. I know. But it’s helpful to know this, in a pinch, when you have only a few drops of blood to get out of clothes, etc.
Not a 100% sure if it is the same thing, but I think my family in Poland uses it to disinfect wounds...
Cold water is the key for blood stains on fabric. Cold water and liquid hand or dish soap will take care of most bloodstains. If the stain isn't fresh, like dried on for a bit, use the cold water with liquid soap, and if that's not enough, use an old toothbrush and baking soda with water and soap and scrub.
Liquid Laundry detergent glows under blacklights but is clear under normal light. You can dip a qtip in some detergent and draw/write on your walls and only see it with a blacklight on. Different brands glow different colors. Lots of fun in dorm rooms.
I was born in 1960, and had four older brothers. So I am very familiar with all three of those things. The black light posters made walking into their rooms like stepping foot into glowing caves, when the other lights were out.
Load More Replies...This is because they use fluorescent chemicals in the detergents to make colors look brighter -- in daylight you don't realize that fluorescence is adding to the brightness.
So you can play a fun game at a party, is the glowing stain Tide or is it Jizz?
I'll keep this in mind when I need to send a secret message to Agent 007.
They're not technically clear under normal light. The whiteners/brighteners in them are designed to convert UV light into visible spectrum, and cool tones are more natural looking in daylight, so they're all going to glow in the indigo to near-cyan range and are usually very pale.
I can see this being the freakiest prank ... don't do this - I will die from heart stoppage.
Scissors make for an excellent pizza cutter
I actually prefer to use them. You have more grip and control, with the pizza cutter I always make a mess
Agreed. I never want to go back to a pizza cutter. Scissors works so much better.
Load More Replies...if you’re using scissors as dirty as the ones in the pictures, that sounds kind of unsanitary. if you have dedicated scissors for cutting pizza and you wash them after use then yeah, go ahead!
I have a pair of dedicated kitchen scissors & use them on all kinds of foods, not just pizza. They're washed up every single time I use them. They live in my utensil drawer & never leave the kitchen. And they are easily sanitized in the dishwasher.

WD 40 removes old adhesives from any thing with out damage or staining or discoloration
Former preschool teacher here- the first thing to use on crayon marks is dry tissues. That removes the wax, and any remaining color can be removed by most household cleansers.
Load More Replies...You can remove tar, tree sap, and bird poop from car and truck exteriors. Shines the leaves on your artificial plants. Removes crayon from walls, carpet, toys, plastic, compressed wood furniture, shoes, and from your dryer (just unplug it first!). Helps clean gunk and scuff marks off your ceramic floors. Spray WD-40 on window sills, etc to keep spiders and bugs out.
WD-40 has over 100 uses....when I find a situation that I can't move something, clean something, slide, erase or whatever..I get the WD and give it a go....No staining...can't hurt anything. Latest thing I found is how great it removes hard water marks.
It will also remove grease stains from clothing and dried grease from dish and cook wares
Use vet wrap instead of sports tape. It's basically the same thing but much less expensive.
Use it for fingertips so less slippery and protection when having chemo and your finger tips are sensitive.
Sorry about the chemo...have you reached any milestones in abeyance?
Load More Replies...Not totally true, Vet wrap is the same as a product we use in Physio called Coban wrap, it’s an elastic stretch wrap, where as most sports tape sometimes called K tape or Kinesiology tape is a firm heavy woven tape similar to say hockey tape. Also Vet wrap and Coban don’t have an adhesive the wrap sticks to itself.
Sabs, yes I have the blue vetwrap from internet and in the shops the Coban wrap. The same stuff and very handy too !!
Load More Replies...I believe they are talking about Vetwrap (3M makes a popularly marketed selection). Not tape, which are definitely a whole other thing. And it's true, the veterinary version is cheaper than the same thing that's marketed for humans. ( though in the 70's, Vetwrap was super expensive... we needed it for my pony who had hoof surgery...my mom always bitched at the cost)
Load More Replies...Great for those who are allergic to adhesive! Just use a piece of gauze on the wound and wrap with vet wrap. A good place to find a variety of colours and patterns is a farm and feed store.
I don't know if this fits here, but I use coconut oil to take adhesive vet bandages off my cat. It dissolves the adhesive and keeps my cats still and cooperative since they're licking off the coconut oil.
You can get it at feed stores /pharmacies/tractor supply/ online.
Load More Replies...Cut up a pool noodle and make a necklace instead of using a cone to keep a pet from licking a wound. it's much easier on them.
While we're at it about dog-care: if your dog needs a bandage on its foot and has to go outside with you and you don't want the bandage to get wet, put a condom over the bandage and then the dog-shoe. It's breathable and watertight and it also comes in different sizes! (Might not work for miniature dogs, though... ;-) )
If you have a French press for coffee, you can also froth milk in it after. Pour in hot milk and raise and lower the plunger until the volume of the milk has about doubled.
If you happened to buy the toy for frothing milk Ikea sells, you will do much better if you take quarter cup of milk, heat it for 10s on 800W in microwave and then froth it. (the milk does froth at about 40°C because the proteins start changing their shape and actually allow longer strands that are necessary to make the structure last.
I got that IKEA milk frother as a bday present 8 years ago and I still use it pretty much regularly. One of the best gifts ever, and I'll always remember those classmates who gave it to me. Definitely do recommend it to everybody!
Load More Replies...I stopped using tea bags, due to the fact that it is hard to get biodegradable ones where I live. I now steep my loose tea leaves in my French press, and there is no need for a tea strainer.
I do something similar. I put in several tea bags and make t e a that I cool down and make iced tea.
Load More Replies...This is a good one. I discovered this years ago, and it was a revelation.
If you do, only fill it half way or less with milk, because the milk will froth up and almost double in size. First time I did it, I filled milk about 2/3 full and milk froth went everywhere, lol

put a somewhat thick layer of vaseline on the skin around your hairline and ears and neck when dying your hair. if you accidentally get dye on your skin, you can easily wipe it off.
My hairdresser always does this, for people who get perms too.
As a licensed cosmetologist, can confirm ^.^
Load More Replies...I've used it when hiking: apply to feet if I start to feel chafing. Note: wearing nylon hose socks under regular socks cuts back on chafing.
Load More Replies...Put Vaseline around the thread on the neck of nail varnish bottles (after cleaning up with nail varnish remover if necessary). It keeps them clear and stops the lids from ever getting stuck.
I dye my daughters hair for her as she has a learning disability so struggles to do it herself, i've been using this trick when dying her hair for years now.
If you do get some on her skin use milk. Milk is a natural alpha hydroxy acid and will gently dissolve the dead/top layer of skin cells that are dyed.
Load More Replies...I do the same thing, but I use conditioner. If you’re going to use the conditioner they put in the box with the hair color, anyway, just open it first and use some as a barrier. Just a light slick will do. Don’t forget the tops and backs of your ears.
Also works when you're painting, if you're out of tape smear a line of it on the edges of windows, etc before you start. I just spray painted a mini fridge and did it on the gasket/door seal, worked great.
Off-topic, but baking soda is fabulous for pet odors. A cat sprayed in your house? Gone.
Keep a bag of cat litter in the trunk of the car, in case you need extra traction if you get stuck in ice or snow.
I'd like to clarify that the NON clumping type works great for traction. The clumping type is good for cleaning up spills in the garage.
I did that when I lived up North. Works like a charm. It's cheap and also absorbs grease in your driveway or garage floor.
Also helpful for winters in Alberta. Helps weigh the back end down too
Bleach to keep away cockroaches. I used to get big ass cockroaches in the summer that came up my drain.
My exterminator told me to pour 1 cup of bleach down my drain each week. You have to pour it down the drain in the room you see them. I started 18 months ago and haven't seen a cockroach since.
(Don't do this if you have a septic tank)
They deliberately put millions times more chlorine in the water ways.
Load More Replies...The first thing done at the water treatment plant is to bleach the hell out of the waste water
They usually dont use chlorine bleach, this one ist really toxic for you and the Environment. It should bei banned from the shelves!!! There is oxygen bleach Form households, odorless and the remains are nontoxic. In water treatment UV Rays are often used. If you want top do it yourself, use clear, thinwalled PET bottles and place them in high sun for a few hours, it will kill most infectous organism
Load More Replies...A better way for the environment is soap water. Let it sit somewhere and they will drink it and die. Or spray them with it if you see them. They breathe through holes in their shell which will be blocked so they suffocate. Or just dont have any water in you house for a while (completely dry your sinks etc) and they will leave, because they cant live without water.
When you live in an apartment you can't dry your sinks it's impossible you need to use them! And the point with the bleach is to not show up! If i start wait for them and feed them soap water i might as well pack my staff and give them my place to enjoy it
Load More Replies...I use a product called Advion. Put a few dabs on a half dozen pieces of aluminum foil, or in a jar lid, tuck them in the bottom of the sink cabinet, & under the appliances. They will gobble it up, then take it back to their nest, & no more roaches within a week or less. And don't keep stacks of cardboard boxes & brown paper bags in your house - cockroaches LOVE the glue in them, and a lot of times you're actually bringing them into your home with the boxes & paper bags!
Advion is absolute magic. Kills ALL bugs. Used it years ago for a cockroach infestation and we've never had any kind of bug since!
Load More Replies...Boric Acid . . . they take it back to their nests and you'll never see them again . . .
Boiling water down the drain’ll do the job on flies. Drains are everything bugs crave in life. They lay their eggs there.
I put a generous amount of baking soda, then pour boiling water. Do it every two weeks or so. Never have a problem with the drains
Load More Replies...Another use of bleach. If you (or in my case, your children) are colonized with MRSA, a 1/4 bleach in a tub filled halfway helps cut down on infections. Soak for about 10 minutes and make sure to scrub under the nails as well. Rinse with clean water. I do this once a week when there are no infections, twice a week if there are infections. It has truly helped cut down on the amount of serious infections they get.
If you have a highlighter that's dying, take the "pen" part of it out of the casing and soak it in nail polish remover. It will revitalize it to working like new
this will work only when the highlighter has dried out and the pigments are still in it. If you do use it out and do try this, it will eventually stop highlighting.
use IPA (isopropyl alcohol/propanol), not nail polish remover. Acetone can melt some plastics, and the markers are alcohol based anyway.
Was just going to say this. IPA is much closer to what the marker uses anyway. This works for all alcohol-based markers, btw, not just highlighters. However, for WATER-BASED markers, use warm water. Dipping the nibs in a few seconds will do the trick.

Any cooking oil is a great way to remove the residue from stickers.
Idk if this is recommended but if you get scratches on wood furniture I've always taken a matching washable marker, colored over the scratch, and then wiped it with a damp cloth (to effectively stain the wood back to match).
I use sharpies on wood scratches. They come in lots of colors, and if you're quick, you can still wipe away excess to get a nice blend. They're permanent, so there's no need to worry about it coming off on people's hands or washing away.
Darn, you beat me by an hour... also works on chipped tile and nicks on painted walls (of color), stains on cloth/ upholstery , etc.
Load More Replies...Essential oil works better, it dissolves the residue. The Eucalyptus kind is the most effective.
I tested this and it did not work. Lamp oil is what you need to remove sticker residu
Makeup remover wipes are really good at getting bike chain grease off your hands.
To be honest, make-up remover wipes would be a very unlikely item I would have around when needing to remove bike chain grease.
A "wipe" is just a piece of cloth - made of plastic, so not the good kind of cloth - with a moisturiser or cleanser on it. You can get the exact same effect with a reusable piece of cloth sprayed with cleanser and over time you'll contribute far less to landfill. Wipes are a scourge for lazy people who think their convenience is worth more than the planet.
Why don't you just wash your hands with dish soap? Does the job without those awful wipes that are terrible for the environment
Make-up remover wipes clan the most stubborn stains on vinyl wallpaper, I learned it from the housekeeping person at a hotel.
A jeweler's loupe can double as a macro lens for your cell phone.
I used to have one of these for examinig electronics, I lost it ages ago and I need to get another one.
Check Amazon for a very inexpensive lighted loupe. I have two and love them.

Shaving foam reducesstops misting on bathroom mirrors and car windows.
Also good for when you have a really sticky poop that you just CANNOT get off no matter how many passes you make with TP. Pop some cream on your TP, lather it around and prepare for a much easier job. Even works with hairy butts. (The only reason I needed to know this is because I'm a nurse and I wipe a lot of butts!)
You guys are heroes. I am serious. I'd use a sandblaster from 10 feet away if I had to do it.
Load More Replies...Also it stops your glasses from fogging up when you’re wearing a mask. Just clean them with shaving cream (the foam kind… not the gel kind).
You don't remove it. You can't see s**t but you don't get any misting.
Load More Replies...A small film of car wax put on a bathroom mirror let dry and buff up - no fogging.
I learned you can also wax your windshield with conditioner. The silicone kind is probably best, just don't use it on the side windows, because the silicone will interact with the rubber seals.
Clear nail polish: Prevent skin going green from brass Permanently stop fabric from fraying Same goes with yarn Seal paint The $2 quick dry stuff is the best for me.
Used to carry nail polish in my school bag as I would frequently snag my tights, one dab would stop a ladder getting longer.
I could never find clear polish when I needed it, so I've used hairspray to stop a run/ladder. It only lasts until the stockings are washed, but good in a pinch!
Load More Replies...I put a drop onto mosquito bites because when it dries, there's no itch. This may not be healthy or medically approved, but I'm horribly allergic to mosquito bites. We're talking welts and bruises if I scratch them at all.
Try one of the athletic lotions or gels that have wintergreen oil, like Icy Hot. I'm also very allergic to mosquito bites & I use a brand with the pure essential oil in it. I find this works so much better & is better for my skin. Smells good too!
Load More Replies...Be careful because acetone (which is usually the main ingredient in nail Polish) is really toxic both in contact to the skin and if you breath too much. If you feel dizzy and nauseous a glass of milk will help
Acetone is nail polish REMOVER, the main ingredient of nail polish is usually Nitrocellulose. But yeah, both are hard on skin.
Load More Replies...Also can put nail polish on brass jewelry - rings, earrings, etc - so that people allergic to brass can still wear it.
Use salt as an abrasive and absorber when cleaning. I spray my stove top with a general household cleaner then sprinkle salt liberally over the top. It gets grease out easily.
For liquid stains like wine, I pour salt over the stain to soak up excess liquid then come through with hydrogen peroxide. Finally I get absorbent towels and dab clean it.
For the love of god, don't believe anyone saying anything about salt and burns. (like right next to my comment). I've been with a girl who has made me a tea into glasses that weren't for hot liquids, it shattered on her and she's had boiling water on her jeans. I was half asleep when that happened but the sound woke me up. I've got her (still in shock somewhat) to rush into shower and pour cold water over it (and take her jeans off). There's been her alternative aunt who made her stop and made a stupid flour, egg or something mixture in the meantime to "cool" it when they went to the hospital. It's been confirmed by the doctors that she'd be 100% less burnt and wouldn't even have a scar if she had an ice bag in a towel on her leg during transit instead. 5°C water takes off way more heat than salt. Freezing things make water condense on them. That means that your skin is in contact with a wet surface. Far better than salt that drains the water out instead.
Just never ever put ice on burns, it will make it worse immediately. If you can, cool running clear water is the best. If the skin broke do not put anything on it, especially food stuff, with the skin barrier gone infections will happen and get into the bloodstream. That's what kills a lot of burn victims.
Load More Replies...If you want to smooth and exfoliate your skin, mix salt with olive oil and scrub yourself all over, before showering. You feel great, and the film of olive oil stays on your skin, giving you all-over moisturizing. WAY cheaper than spa salt scrubs, too.
Salt on a stovetop is a great idea to get scratches in the glass or the varnish everywhere... bad advice. Just use hot water and dish-washing detergent to get out grease...
I've used salt to get dingey build-up off my tea kettle. It works like a charm.
Nope you need to get to cold running water until you can get to some ice wrapped in a towel as mentioned above. Salt is the last thing you want on any kind of burn.

Toilet seat covers are the same as blotting paper for oily skin.
Toilet seat covers are RIDICULOUS. If there's visible ick on the seat - DON'T SIT THERE. If there's invisible ick on the seat, do you really think a piece of thin paper, which is like a loose fishing net to a virus or bacteria, is going to do a damn thing?! Either way, NO SEAT COVER NEEDED. Just another way to get us using paper products all the damn day, many of which are STILL made from old-growth forests.
Some people need to sit. Bacteria doesn't go through paper if its dry. If you want to be environmentally friendly, wash your butt, just like millions of people are doing.
Load More Replies...A bit is a hassle, but I generally just take some toilet paper, go to the hand wash, use soap hand soap, wipe the seat and then use it, pre COVID. Not 100% safe, but helps me keep my sanity
Q-tips to clean your keyboard
Turn it around, hit it softly, use a moist once folded paper towel. Q-tips are often too wide.
I used to do that all the time at the office. The keyboards were nasty.
Load More Replies...I personally would suggest getting a mechanical keyboard for two reasons. 1/ they are built to last far longer and 2/ they are far easier to maintain. You can remove all the keycaps without any damage to the keyboard or loss in quality of typing and clean them in the sink. (Many cheapo keyboards never type the same when the keycaps get removed and put back on.)
The downside is that pre homeoffice hated the sound of my mechanical one. I personally love it and have a lower error quote writing
Load More Replies...How? My laptop's keys have quite wide spaces between them and a q-tip is still not small enough.
Use inter-dental-brushes. Is that what they're called? Those little tiny brushes you can buy to clean the gaps between your teeth. They're awesome (and that's actually the only use I buy them for. My teeth get the sting-thing (forgot the name, dammit!) )
Load More Replies...Turn the keyboard upside down, shake gently changing the angle constantly.
For me the problem is hardly some dust under the keys. My keys will after a few years get pretty greasy or whatever it is and then I use isopropanol to clean the keys from filth, but it doesn't work as great as one would hope

Kinesiology tape to hold up your boobs when your outfit is too revealing for a normal bra. I used a few strips of tape under my wedding dress, and my girls were good to go the entire day and night.
KINESIOLOGY tape is a special stretchy "sport injury" tape. But for the love of God, DON'T use the Duct Tape pictured🙀🙉😱
Well, do, then tell us the story. It should be quite entertaining. /s

i use k-tape regularly for relief and, honestly, have never thought of using it as a no strap bra. will have to try. while there are brands of k-tape that come in (rock tape is one) that have 'sensitive', 'regular', and 'extra' to define the stickiness of it, it can be hard to get off. a little baby oil should do it.
Pickle juice can assist the ph balance in your stomach. This means when out drinking, if your stomach starts to feel queezy take a shot or two of pickle juice... why vomit when you’re out having fun? On a side and probably more relevant note, pickle juice is essentially the OG Gatorade. If you need to replace electrolytes or simply feel a bit dehydrated, drink some pickle juice and then some water
Nitpicky I know: It is always pH. pH is even written like this at the beginning of a sentence, by the way. It is a constant an thus always written small p (potentia) H(Hydrogenii).
Well, if you're going to be a NitpickCop at least it's for a good reason this time and not the usual its/it's & their/ they're... Because we all know that is probably the 😈Evil Auto-correct's😈 fault anyway.
Load More Replies...If you need electrolytes but don’t want the sugary drinks coconut water is quite good
How about not drinking so much that you vomit? I know, boring. But seriously: alcohol is a cell-poison. It will kill cells in your body and brain even in small amounts, so do yourself a favour and drink as little as possible.
So if you want to get really stinking drunk, always bring along a large supply of pickle juice?
Plastic fruit cups are great seedling pots.
Definitely better, you can cut them apart and plant the whole "cup" and you can cut of the lid and line it with used (& washed) foil or saran wrap to make a water tray for underneath.
Load More Replies...egg cartons, the cardboard kind, are great as they can be planted in the cup once your kind of break the cup before putting them into the ground. what i have been using are the coffee cups that my dad got from different restaurants/stores. while they may not be able to be planted as is they are at least used for a purpose
