30 Style Accessories Made From The Most Random Stuff You Can Find In Your Home By This Canadian Artist
Interview With ArtistIt’s hard to pinpoint just how old fashion as a concept and phenomenon is, but one thing is for certain—it has been around for so long that it’s an inevitable part of any culture and society.
But, as is with most things, fashion too has been around for so long that it is becoming increasingly harder to come up with something new, something fresh.
Enter Gab Bois, Montreal-based artist who has been effectively reinventing fashion using everyday items. Bois’ ingenious ideas are featured in the curated list below, along with an interview with the mastermind herself.

But please without those edges poking into the nose, this doesn't look comfortable!
Load More Replies...these are actually pretty cool, although i would never wear them in public.
A red cabbage crop top? That's taking the expression "eat it or wear it" way too literally!
Actually scratch that... they look heavy. Poor ears.
Load More Replies...Uhm... I used to put hardware like this in my ears when I was a punk (long time ago) and I got severy metal allergy from it. Don't try this at home people, it gets nasty very quickly.
That'd be the zinc. Most hardware can be found in stainless steel or chrome plate, either of which will be better than zinc plating.
Load More Replies...I did and still do wear hardware earrings. Nails work, as well-- never had a reaction to any of them. I'd suggest knowing what metals you're allergic to beforehand, though, as many people are allergic or have reactions to zinc and nickel. I'm -extremely- allergic to gold, so I avoid it at all costs.
Gab Bois takes that which is mundane and ordinary and turns it into something that makes most people do a double take, bringing in a fresh way of seeing things. The photographer defamiliarizes ordinary household and other conventional items as fashion accessories, among many other things.
This includes everything from banana slippers and skull cap cereal bowls to pumpkin hats and a whole bunch of bras and purses, making for some surreal photography. Sure, it's not all that practical for the most part, but it certainly captivates people with how surreal it looks as works of art.
Down in these parts we call it... *takes a long sip of tea* ...gay bacon...
Load More Replies...It is for me! Gotta love winter fashion! :D
Load More Replies...A shirt made of gummy candy stripes. Interesting... but it'll stick to you at the first hint of sweat.
Sour Straps. Im in my 40‘s now and still buy these at the Dollarama from time to time.
“I was always into fashion, especially DIY fashion, even as a kid. I would help my mom remove the leaves from the corn cobs and then we would use them to make doll dresses. I’d also make flower necklaces for the neighborhood cats during my free time, little things like that,” Bois explained the origins of this idea.
“Being an only child and playing by myself, I was put into a position where I had to find ways to keep myself occupied, and I developed a huge interest in doing little crafts, so I can say a part of the work I do now still comes from that childhood interest and curiosity.”
I swear to God bro! XD Tell me why 5-Minute Crafts woulddo something like this: How to sneak food into class XD
Load More Replies...When your husband wants to whisper sweet nothings in your ear, but gets hungry instead.....lol!
Just like making fruit loop necklaces when your a kid (might just be an Aussie thing)
This is one of those situations where if you are poor people pity you but if you are rich they'll pay an arm and a leg to also have a pair and it is so artsy
Causes me to reminisce over the "pull-tab" jewelry that we constructed in the 1970's. And all of the finger cuts that were testament to how much effort we put in.
Alright, I’m saving up those ring pull things to make this.
Haha I did this in middle school! I'd be out there searching for trashed aluminum cans for those tabs 🔎🥫
There is a lot if different things you can do with pop tabs. I see them used a lot in the alt community
Back when pull ring pop top cans were being produced, there were all kinds of art projects centered around them, including full on dresses and brassieres.
We asked Bois to elaborate on how the whole creativity process goes in her book, and she said this:
“The process starts with an idea. Sometimes, it comes on its own, without me having to even think about it, but sometimes I sit myself down and brainstorm.”
“Then, production. It can take anywhere from 15 minutes to several days, depending on the complexity of the idea and its execution, and whether or not I get it right on the first try.”
“I then finish off with post-production. That part also varies in time and complexity but I always try to create as much of the concept in real life so I only polish off the image in post and don’t do any major editing work.”
wouldn't want that in my hair, but kinda cool i appreciate the effort
Tf? This is something people on the show (Naked and Afraid) would do
Dude how did you know I was watching that right now?
Load More Replies...Lemons definitely do—I stepped on one and had to have it surgically removed. I put my head into a pillow and screamed when the doctor shot Novocain into the sole of my foot!
Load More Replies...I'd have to agree. Kraft american cheese is yuck.
Load More Replies...I would cook all of it up and make like 15 toasted cheese sandwiches.
The era of the Mondrian dress! I had one in the sixth grade, which I wore with my white Go-go boots!
Load More Replies...Nope nope nope just nope. I see it is still individually wrapped but I just can not go there. Food, yeah...it’s for eating
I actually have trainers that I am painting rainbows on. A lot more practical that sweets.
Load More Replies...Art is a challenge in and of itself that can sometimes end up pulling an artist back to square one no matter how fleshed out it may look in your head. Bois considers some of the challenges she finds the hardest in her line of art:
“There are many times when an image I thought would look a certain way in my head doesn’t turn out that way at all. That’s definitely the most challenging part of trying to turn ideas and abstract concepts into three-dimensional objects or sets, because there’s only so much that you can plan in your head before trying it in real life.”
“Also, sometimes a concept that I think is super clear and makes so much sense is completely lost in translation when brought into a picture. It’s definitely frustrating when that happens, but that pushes me to be resourceful, think outside the box, and try again.”
how would they hold them together, with them still being edible and all??
Why wouldn't it? (other than the clasps not being flexible, but I'm sure there's some way around that)
Load More Replies...Heck, yeah Id wear that. Or some version of it. It’d keep people out of my pockets.
There was a movie starring Ryan O'Neal as a guy whose jeans rip and he has to replace the butt-cheeks parts with clear plastic. It becomes a big fashion hit. That's all I remember.
I don’t know which movie that is, but just seeing the name Ryan O’Neal is such a flashback. He and Barbra Streisand made “What’s Up Doc,” which to this day is hands down the funniest movie I have ever seen. Bonus: It was filmed in San Francisco, where I lived for most of my life.
Load More Replies...a tiny dot of hot glue and a random can you can do it,paint or glitter or whatever please you you have now a brand new "useful" gadget (I'll take 30% of your Etsy sales ^^)
Load More Replies...Lastly, we’ve asked Bois to point out some of her favorites among the slew of designs she’s created over the years, and she had this to say:
“I have many favorites. Sometimes ideas turn out so much better than I had expected and that just brings me so much joy. The orange bra and cell phone inside a sea shell are great examples of that.”
“The other ones I really love because of the context of their production, whether I got help from a loved one to make it or the feelings I experienced while making it. That’s the case for the big band-aid blanket, the book pages made of yellow cheese singles and the ice cream cone made of snow.”
At the end of the day you're another day older
Load More Replies...A Pumpkin Pith Helmet! And it will hold up well until it doesn't.
This should be on the post "Show me you are poor without telling me you are poor "
In WW2, women used to draw seams down the backs of their legs so it looked like they were wearing silk stockings.
It’s ringolos... we used to put them on our fingers like rings and bite them off lol
Load More Replies...They’re on mesh that’s the same color of her skin. If you look down near the belt loops you can sort of see it.
Load More Replies...There’s much more to be seen outside this list, so be sure to check out Bois’ Instagram for more incredible out-of-the-box art. She also has a book—an artist book that you can buy here.
But before you dash off to another one of our articles, why not let us know what you thought of this in the comment section below!
I’m trying to understand how that works. Marshmallows are made to be roasted!
Load More Replies...There's a giant marshmallow farm on the way to Carnation, WA. Highway 202. Giant as in gargantuan. So gargantuan, each one takes up a flatbed!
I just saw a story in Atlas Obscura about something similar they do every year in Edinburgh, Scotland. A guy wears clothing completely covered in burrs (only eyes, nose, and mouth are un-burred) and is paraded around the city by his two attendants (in normal clothes). He is called, unsurprisingly, the Burryman. It's been going on for hundreds of years, no one is sure of the origins, but probably some pagan/pres-christian thing. It looks like the guy in the suit can't lower his arms, 'cause they'd end up sticking to his sides!
well pretty sure that would be way to popular among the rap/urban style universe in my country if that was a real thing
Holy shite, somebody could make millions of dollars making custom braces
It’s like a flashback to Get Smart and the shoe-phone
Load More Replies...Don't worry no ice creams were harmed in the making of this flip flop
Load More Replies...MY BRAIN CRINGED ON THIS ONE. When you step all the poor ice cream would sqloosh out and you can SEE THE FOOT DIRT ON THE COOKIE I cant-
looks like those lil charms that you get from claire´s sooooooooo cute!
For the next trick she will tie a knot in the stalk with her tongue without removing them from her ears
I thought the same thing when looking at the Q-tip. This looks infected.

Flexicuff as a belt.... until you gotta pee hand have no scissors.....
This has been done in countless high schools. When the boys wear pants that are too big, the Principal will use the zip tie to make the pants stay up.
They had T-shirts like this in the 70s: https://images.app.goo.gl/Xw5upiDX3S3N4aMP7
*then proceeds to clean up milk that leaked through the hat*
Load More Replies...Froot Loops are terrible. I’m sorry, but it’s the truth. I’ve only had them once; Asda were selling them, and they were disgusting.
Okay, not these but i will say those spirals make AWESOME earings if you are a goth/emo/punk/alt ect.. and its really easy to make! I have some earings
That's one way to keep boys from locking lips with your daughter... oh, wait... that'll just cause them to get tangled together... nvmd
I didn’t realize that I would need breakfast before BP!
Load More Replies...oh... this is the post that made me realise a good number of the post here could just be photo manips rather than actual things she physically made.
Looks like they pushed the bigger part of the Q-tip through her ear holes and her ear isn't happy about it.
Hopefully they've attached it to give merely the illusion of an actual piercing.
Load More Replies...It took me longer than ill admit to realize the fence was on her legs not just part of the fence behind her
First there was Fishnet stockings and now: Chicken wire stockings!! Although, being pictured in front of the fence was a bad idea.
fishnet stockings are hot but gotta admit, chicken wire stockings seems just as hot if not hotter.
At first glance, I thought they were teeth but once I realized they weren't, I was relieved cause teeth kind of freak me out. Then I went the next post and all but lost my s**t...
It was probably inspired from the real shoes by Christian Louboutin
why would you use this? it wouldn't help you in a fight cause you tuck your fingers in to punch
Those coconut Jelly Bellies don;t look so bad now, eh? :-)

I know a lot of people are complaining bout how none of this is practical, but that's kind of the whole thing- it's art, it's just supposed to be interesting looking. And it achieved that, I like the aesthetic of a lot of these?
I think people are missunderstandiing, these arnt supposed to be practical, just coll looking and unique. I thought they were cool.
The world would be boring if we liked all the same things I guess!
I'm pretty sure some of these are Photoshop creations, like the bolts through the ear, the Q-tip through the ear, and the banana bag (to name the most obvious ones) - so another level at which this is art and fantasy rather than utility.
I love these! If I had any artistic talent, this is what I would want to do.
It's not abstract art, it is a design. Like music everyone will have a different opinion depending how it makes them feel. If she went further and each piece had a story, making it an abstract, I think the people who don't like it would at least appreciate the work. For me it's fun. I enjoyed viewing the work. Great designs
