From time to time problems arise in any workplace. Sometimes, it’s the colleague on your left, other times it’s the manager getting into trouble, and on some occasions, you’re the one to take the blame. And while we do really mess up and have to take responsibility for our actions here and there (no one was born a perfect employee!), some superiors do seem to really enjoy putting us down, for whatever crazy reasons.
Recently, labor activist Katie Harrington initiated a Twitter thread asking people “what’s the weirdest thing you ever got in trouble at work for?” She also shared how she was “accused of being disrespectful because the six people I CCd on an email weren’t listed in order of seniority.”
Read on for some of the most facepalm-worthy responses down below! They will make you wonder what on earth is going on in employers’ heads, and how we all deserve a medal for putting up with it and showing up with a smile 5 days a week.

R@pe. The censored word is r@pe. I get blurring out cuss words, BP, but this is taking it too far!
Agreed. Not talking about rape just contributes to the awfulness.
Load More Replies...Why does "rape" have to be censored? Has BP gotten to that point of bigotry?
I don't know that it's motivated by bigotry (against rapists??). It may be well-intended and meant out of concern for those who've been sexually assaulted. https://www.nsvrc.org/statistics

I shudder to think what they meant by "handling" it. Giving themselves time to spin in a story to defend themselves after letting this take place in their hospital... or just never letting the truth see the light of day?

I had a boyfriend once that was much the same way. I said something and used the word "pensive" and he said that I was just using words like that to make him feel stupid. I didn't think that "pensive" was all that weird or uncommon a word to use. I also think that if he was feeling stupid there might have been a reason for that...
Load More Replies...I love vocabulary. And make no apologies for people having to ask what I mean. I'm not dumbing down for anyone.
I hate the “language is fluid” argument. Especially as someone who learned English as a second language and have been put under the microscope, only to turn around and have lazy people argue back that I’m being unfair and everyone knows what they mean and language evolves blah, blah, blah. God forbid I correct them by saying “you mean DEvolves?”

And that spelling is the plural form of the singular word minutia - but everyone pronounces the plural the way the singular is supposed to be pronounced (\muh-NOO-shee-uh\ or \muh-NOO-shuh\) instead of the technically correct (\muh-NOO-shee-ee\) because... well... just no, okay?
Load More Replies...Same thing happened to me when I was 19/20 and it was a common word, something like "unwritten" as far as I remember and my boss tried to convince me the word doesn't exist. She was the dumbest of all my supervisors and hated anyone with any brains.
A couple of decades ago I’m had a not-very-bright supervisor who didn’t really understand my job (she was hired after I was when the partners felt they needed a supervisor for the non-report writing staff), and she was just bright enough to realize that I was much smarter than she was, so she felt very insecure around me, and when she would ask me to explain what I was doing, I played a little game I called “confuse her with the facts.” E.G., I would give her a very detailed explanation of what was requested of me and the steps I was taking in order to get my part done, and she was too insecure to ask me “How do C. and D. relate to what I just asked you?” I eventually quit because she was trying to micromanage me without any real understanding how I did my job.
Load More Replies...I had a boss that was so f*****g condescending and tried to belittle my work or that of collegues. So, I started to defend my work by explaining his errors back to him including the one occasion where he repeated himself unnecessarily and I explained to him the meaning of "persistent" or the one time I told him that I did not have to read the doctoral thesis he recommended because it all was already in the title. He liked big words, but it soon became clear that very often he did not know what he was talking about.
I once said “niche” but it wasn’t quite correct (in my defense, English is my 2nd language) but I couldn’t find the correct word, so I let it go. Guess which word was the new descriptor for everything from now on?! Le sigh.
While making mistakes is only human and your workplace is not an exception, depending on what kind of mistake it is, your employment status can be jeopardized by a single slip. Moreover, if you're a new employee, the company isn't convinced yet that you're indispensable. In that case, building your name all the way from that first good impression to the top is another job to do, but there are some simple things that you can do that may indeed get you into trouble.
If you tend to pat yourself and not others on the back at work, you’re communicating that you don’t care about the success or contributions of others on the team. Of course, self-gratitude and self-motivation are important, but you should also express your appreciation to your boss and fellow employees to show that you care for them.
I recently got reprimanded for aaking too many questions- I'm a new hire and my training has been horrible, so I've literally been asking questions on how to do things that pertain to my job). My manager told me not to "worry about anything that doesn't pertain to me. So i no longer do. When someone else sends me work now, I don't check it because it's "not my job".
Many years ago I was told that I was "being too careful". I asked what exactly the downside was... they said I was taking too much time making sure things were right before letting work go out to customers (I draw maps for title companies). I got that in writing, so 18 months later, when we got an 8 million dollar claim when a condo was built 11' on the wrong side of a property line, I immediately produced the memo telling me to not take the time to be careful.
Please don’t keep us in suspense...THEN WHAT HAPPENED?

The simple fact that you got 5 upvotes underlines how miserable the US society is. When you're judging people and their needs on their income, you're just one step away from admitting that you think that people with a minimum wage, aren't actually human.

Load More Replies...Good for you for being such a good person and doing the right thing!
Ths! I love when people don't let their boss scare them into acting cruelly just because it may cause some slight discomfort among them, while cruelly shoving the cat into that oven of a car would demand a lot more from said cat. Cats don't deserve that, they deserve being treated as a feeling entity, like any feeling entity should. And no job is that important that throwing out ethical beliefs because your boss wants you to should even be considered an option by any means.
The same exact same thing happened to me, but it was a baby raccoon no more than a month old, and I had it in a cat carrier in the staff bathroom until I could get it to the wildlife place that opened at 9 ( I was at work for 7am). I was the ONLY staff working at that time of the morning, but when the next person came in at 9, she told on me about bringing a wild sick animal into the facility… (it was a baby and was dehydrated), I was put on unpaid leave thd very next day. I quit shortly after. Would also do it again in a heartbeat!
Wearing your heart on your sleeve, aka too much honesty, should be better left at home. If you’re often vocally stressed or you openly display negative emotions, they will hurt your reputation and will probably have an impact on your team. No employer would be willing to put up with an overly negative attitude.
Those who avoid expressing their views and opinions at all costs may also get into trouble. While it may feel peaceful to you, your manager may get the impression that you’re coasting. If you’re really afraid of getting pushed back, remember that the reason why you were selected for your workplace in this extremely competitive market is because you were promising of your great work contributions, more than other competitors for the position. It’s only fair that they also want to see you in action and not just backing into your safety zone.
It has been brought to our attention you are absent from work only during work hours... very very sus.

As a hairstylist I had this girl come in. I'd cut her hair a few times. She smarts of about how she had to have someone else cut her hair the last time because I "was on vacation. Again!" I was standing in front of her. Asked when that was. She said the dates. I looked her sea in the eye and said, "I was at my brothers funeral." Which is 100% true. Never saw her again. The audacity of some people.
This is definitely the sort of case where the assholes ruin it for everyone else. I worked with a woman who in less than a year needed 4 days leave for EACH of her two grandmothers' funerals and her husband's grandparent's funeral (4 days because they were out of state). It's POSSIBLE they lost all those family members in a short time but not likely.
Here in Germany you usually have to show the death certificate if you want to apply for special days off (= in addition to your usual holidays, only for first degree relatives), in order not to have the poor grandmother die seven times per year...

Carry couple of big extinguishers so you can put fire out without bus stopping. And jerry can with some diesel. Couple of fuses, light bulbs, spare tire, what if bus only has one and 2 puncture... What else.

Had to go to the principal and he did not believe me, got punished. Of COURSE we passengers have to manage our pulbic transport better!
Never ever ever let a boss talk twaddle to you. The moment this authoritarian bullsh@t starts, your rights begin eroding.
Got late because a train had a break down and blocked a rail road crossing, less than one minute from work. Had to make a 45 minutes detour. Sent a picture of the crossing to my then supervisor but I still got comments about being late. I re-sent him the same picture with text message while he was still talking me down.
I worked a security desk afternoon shift at a luxury condo . I was the only female. The men would leave their dirty coffee cups and garbage for me to clean every day. We had our own lunch room. ALL the men. The superintendent, the male security staff etc. I cleaned it cause I could not stand the mess and did not want to make waves. . One day I arrive and there is left over food and garbage everywhere. Someone had booked a family lunch in our party room and given the left overs to staff. I was told to clean it. this was Friday. I refused to clean it. I left a note for the female cleaning staff to not do it if the male guards asked and told the weekend guards not to touch it. By Monday it REEKED and could be smelled in the lobby. The female cleaner told me the security supervisor called her in to clean it up and she returned with a bottle of clean and a sponge and handed it to him. I still get pissed off thinking about the disrespect.

If male colleagues can't go around without thinking inappropriate about someone eating banana, they need to be trained. Everyone in office should get at least 3 bananas to eat that day in office. I'd definitely do that.
The male colleagues can't help it when the manager is a pervert, though. And "manager" is a gender neutral word.

See, this is a ridiculous thing to sexualize. Unless they actually want “it” bitten off! As if “it” was a comparable length to even the smallest banana, to begin with.
I was taken to task for eating a cruller (long, thin donut). My male colleagues who made suggestive (and in a couple cases, outright pornographic) comments were not reprimanded in any way.
If you get aroused around women eating vaguely phallic foods, maaaaaybe you shouldn't be around women?
Had a male colleague who looked at me "like that" and tried to embarrass me while I innocently ate a banana. I have neither time nor patience for this cřap! I also had a cucumber in my veggie stash - should have been for later that day but I ate it directly afterwards. As a whole. Biting heartily into it. Like a velociraptor. All the time making eye contact with him. Message received!
How do you inappropriately eat a banana? Were you not using a fork and knife or what lol?
Usually making lingering eye contact. This may not be limited to bananas. Mr Whippy ice creams are also subject to inappropriate eye contact.

I'm going to cut your pay because I think you are a bad mother who doesn't spend time with their child. I will also judge you for not being able to provide for that child's needs because I cut your pay.
I worked for my husbands family. I had a baby & was back at work full time in 4 days (two of which were the weekend). I was expected to bring the kid in & continue working with a newborn like nothing had changed. FIL cut my pay to half but not my workload… He couldn’t tell my why. He just felt it necessary. I would have just quit but that would have caused problems I didn’t have the time or energy for. Merica. (FIL is a rabid trump fan. Go figure)
Nothing more satisfying than to be able to humiliate your boss in public. "Yes, I found the solution my bossed claimed, by not looking at the symptoms, but by looking for the cause."
I've had some pretty awful bosses, but I've never had a desire to humiliate someone in public. That just seems like the sort of thing you feel bad about later, even if you thought the person deserved it at the time.

A collegue did something like that. Our boss was seizing all our work and after the collegue had quitted the job, them refused to re-write several articles that came back from the reviewing process. The boss could not do it himself although he was mentioned as the responsible scientist/author.
Always the best way to do it. I have had too many asshole bosses who took credit for my ideas—-and the bonuses, raises, and promotions that resulted from it—-so I learned to leave out important information like that. Whenever I’m put in charge, I always give credit where credit is due. Most bottom level employees don’t get enough recognition from the mucky-mucks. Having been one of them, I try to make sure they do.
Even better if it confuses clients, they might take you seriously.
Sad his took me a minute to figure out. Even worse, studies show it is absolutely true. Resumes with an ambiguously gendered name are far more successful in many industries than clearly female names. Sucks.
Load More Replies...Why is knowing the gender of someone working with you that important? Maybe for pronouns, IDK? But it's not gonna impact the quality of their work or anything.
It’s only really important for healthcare settings, because some people are more comfortable with a doctor (including dentist or therapist) who's one sex or the other, but then you’d have more info to go off than just someone’s gender neutral nickname.

I work for a company with offices and employees in multiple countries. Obviously many foreign names that can get pretty confusing. Everyone mixed up male/female and name/surname once on a while. We have a chuckle about it and move on.
Completely depends on what country. Even in USA, no real negative action was taken against the employee, only says "scolded". Very unlikely to be actionable. Still horrible, but unlikely any legal recourse.

Had a boss who, after I’d run a batch of checks, insisted I take the computer generated check register that got produced along with the checks and enter all of the numbers into a calculator. If my calculator tape didn’t match the computerized printout, I had to run the numbers again until they matched. The calculator tape then had to be attached to the printout as “proof” that the computer had added the numbers correctly & so had printed the correct amounts ooh the checks. Because the totals balanced, y’know. 🤪

Don't know who they work for. MY boss insists that I leave at quitting time - may have something to do with the fact that he has to pay overtime for anything over eight hours.
Load More Replies...That's literally the only thing I enjoyed about my last job before retiring. I was an hourly employee at the corporate office of a major candy company in the U.S. Hourly employees there were treated like the factory employees - we had to clock in & out on an old fashioned time clock with an actual paper card; if we were late, we got "tardy" marks & written up after 3 tardies, fired after 5. The best thing was that no one could contact us before or after working hours (if they did, we got paid!), & we were required to be gone from our desks at clock-out time. There were soooo many nitpicky, childish rules at that place, happy that they got sold to a major European candy company & changes were made. But I'm livin' the dream now, I'm lucky enough to be retired.

Load More Replies...Especially if you’re salaried. Just try comparing your hourly rate, for instance, for 50 hours of work to your 40 hour rate plus time and a half for overtime. An example will make that clearer. Say your 40 hour salary is $800, or $20/hr. Your OT rate would be $30/hr. If you worked 10 extra hours that week’s pay period, that would be an extra $300 in your paycheck. But if you’re salaried and work an extra 10 hours in a one week pay period, you don’t make extra—-in fact you make less per hour. $800 divided by 40 is $20/hr. But $800 divided by 50 is $16/hr. See why they just love to offer you salary instead of hourly?
I had been working 65-70 hours a week when I was diagnosed with a heart condition. My cardiologist immediately put me on a 40 hour schedule, including commuting, and wrote a letter to HR for my personnel record. The first thing my boss said was, "well s**t, we’re really busy. How long is this going to last?" It lasted 7 months and every few weeks he’s ask me if I could work longer hours.

Your highness and most esteemed employer, to my indescribable sorrow I am compelled to inform you that it is impossible for me to visit your temple of underpaid labor because of a temporary weakness in my mental health. I will do my best to overcome this barrier in my productivity as quickly as possible in order to be able to serve you optimally again as soon as possible.
Okay /this/ manager I like. They understand that mental health issues are health issues and accommodated their employee. The higher-ups, however, can shove off.
So, I just got removed from my workplace and put into a separate office in another location because I rang in sick with a migraine and I was apparently 'disrespectful' because i was screaming in pain and vomiting at the time. Usually we could text in and I had text pre-set on the phone to send because in a bad migraine i really can't function. They changed the rules and wanted to hear me - when they heard me I got in trouble. "Your co-worker was distressed. You were rude. It doesn't matter how bad your headache is, you can still be polite." WTF.
Migraines aren't headaches!! You look/ feel/ sound like you are stroking out! Ugh... I'm so sorry when I hear of other people dealing with this. You are not (safely) functional with migraines!

I had the same problem. Somedays i was so bad i couldn't function at all, couldn't move or even speak to anyone due to mental health, but was expected to actually phone in sick and speak to someone, not email or text, and a family member couldn't do it, it had to be me.

Well, actually, with the accent it's pretty racist. So a brief talk about this is not a bad idea.
If you haven't seen the series (I haven't) it is strange at best but could easily be seen as racist at worst. I agree it shouldn't be put up in public; you are assuming that everyone will get the joke, and whilst the show is popular, it is designed for a certain demographic which almost certainly doesn't include all your colleagues. This is a massive fail on behalf of the poster who has shown their immaturity.

That is most hospitals to a tee, and has beome even worse during covid. Official emails regularly come out over the years saying "stay home if sick. You must not attend work if you have symptoms." Now they add "You must go and get tested and stay home until you receive a negative test result". Ok no worries. Common sense. Now we get called in "you've taken 3 sick days in the last 3 months" yeah I was sick and I had to stay away until the test results come back (usually takes longer than 24hrs). I submitted the doctor's certificates for the time off and the results of the tests. "This is an unacceptable use of sick days. You are now on notice that any further absences for sick days will result in further disciplinary action" Ok take me off the covid ward then. "You cannot choose where you are redeployed. If you get sick or believe you have been exposed you will need to call in sick, not attend work, get testing and a doctor's certificate" ..... o.O

Like professional and personal lives are separate, if something from their personal life gets dragged into their professional life then that's a reason to intervene. Obviously what someone posts on their Facebook might be vastly different than what they post on LinkedIn
Yes and no.... While I understand the desire for privacy and the concern around them monitoring your social media, if you've identified yourself as their employee on your page, it can still negatively reflect on the company. They shouldn't be able to see your password, otherwise, what's the use?
For a long time, I used two part numbers that we haven't made for years, having ended those contracts. Add the mandatory caps and special characters, my password was 38 characters. When they sold us to yet another corporation, I had to shrink it down to a maximum of 15 characters to fit their idea of a safe password...
As to the company knowing the passwords - years back on many systems the only way to put in or change a password was as the system administrator, users couldn't change their own. I worked on such where I got a stack of forms with all the old and new passwords for all the users in order to change them. Oh, for added fun, the passwords were actually stored internally to the system in plaintext. Computers have come a long way!

got called in to supervisor and director's office and asked if i thought it was appropriate to look up porn while on my lunch break. was so confused until the showed me what the IT dept had reported as which point i started to laugh. had to explain that i wasn't looking for porn - i was looking for theatres that were showing the then-new movie "XXX" with vin diesel. had to look up the movie on the computer to prove to them it really was a movie and that my husband wanted to do a dinner and movie date.
I said f**k that on the dept floor to a coworker (dont even remember why) and apparently a supervisor over heard me. I got called in to the office 3 weeks later and was fired. They asked me to sign my termination papers saying I was insubordinate and I refused . I applied for unemployment and they tried to deny me and I had to go through the appeals process. On the reason for the denial they stated that I was making two many errors in my position and a bunch of other bull crap related to my job performance. The unemployment person asked me what happened, I told them I said a curse word and was never advised that my performance was off and they asked if I was ever offered retraining and confirmed I had not been. I was able to get my unemployment approved. I did go back and work for the same company a year later and eventually they had to close due to so many lawsuits from the owner and all his sexual harassment claims against him.
Had a boss get pissed and tell me "I don't understand this resistance, you're job is to do what I tell you to do." I literally asked what she wanted me to do and that was her response. I never had a conversation alone with her again. If she hadn't transferred, I would have quit.
Worked on a golf course, was told, because I was a girl, I could not wear shorts, in the Texas summers because, "You would distract the players with your legs showing." I wore my hubs shorts that were 5 times too big and long, gathered with a rope around my waist. Did not distract anyone but got some laughs. I was told I could wear a longer version of normal shorts.
As a licensed rn, I got in trouble for reading the patient directions on how to take their medication.
I worked at a high volume spay/neuter clinic. It was January, in Canada, and it was snowing. An owner dropped his dog off for a neuter, and found that his car wouldn't start. He came back into the clinic to ask if anyone had jumper cables. I said I did, and I could pull my car next to his, but he'd have to boost it because I didn't know how. I went to the back to tell the manager I was gonna move my car real quick so an owner could get a boost. She told me I was on the clock and if I went outside to move my car, she'd write me up. For taking 2 minutes to move my car so an owner could get a boost. I told her if she wrote me up, she wasn't just an awful manager, she was an awful human being. I helped the owner and quit a few months later.
