In all the time we humans have been discovering and describing the world around us, we've only just scratched the surface. In fact, scientists have estimated that there are about 8.7 million species of plants and animals in existence, however, only around 1.2 million of them have been identified and described so far (most of which are insects). This means that millions of other organisms remain a complete mystery.

But of course, even such a "small" number is too big for us regular folk to keep up with. And the subreddit 'Awwducational' is a great example of that. Its 4.9 million members keep sharing lesser-known facts about the animal kingdom, and even though the online community was founded all the way back in 2012, it doesn't seem to be running out of cute and educational titbits to surprise everyone with.

So even though we at Bored Panda have already written about 'Awwducational' here and here, we decided to compile the best posts that have since gone viral within the sub since our last publication. They're just too good to pass up!

All animals are here for a purpose. We should never harm or kill them deliberately. They were here before humans.

Except for those million-legged things that crawl really fast in a nightmarish manner on your ceiling at 3am. The rest? Sure, sure… 😉

I've been learning a lot about bee's and wasp's. There's worker bee's they are very tiny and live in little holes on a piece of wood. Honey bee's don't mess with you at all. Wasp's those are mean AH's! I had a wasp nest and got stung at least 7 times. About a month later I was in the yard and 2 ft. away I see a flying swarm. I started to run and fell on my behind looked down and could see one on my cheek. I swiped it off and ran. Felt something in my pant leg and it was a wasp. On my face alone I was stung 5 times. They are mean. Black jacks are docile.

As Olivia Lai pointed out on Earth, as much as we want to marvel at nature and our planet’s biodiversity, we need to remember that the creatures we share our home with are currently under overwhelming stress due to centuries of widespread human activities and climate change.

Deforestation and land clearing for agricultural and farming purposes remain to be the biggest threats to animal and plant species across the world, reducing millions of hectares of natural habitats every year.

Fun fact, you can often tell the gender of the Budgie by the color surrounding the nose holes! If it is more blue (as shown in the pic) it's most likely a boy. If it's more pink it's most likely a girl, of course sometimes it's not always correct as sometimes there are little traces of the other color in the nose! And less common is a purple nose! If you aren't sure of the gender of your budgie, it's best to visit with a vet to be sure! Of course, treat all animals with care and have an amazing day!

People can be chimeras too. I heard a story where the twin that died in embryo was the mother to the ladies babies. She had her kids taken away because the dna test said she was not the mom. It was her dead unborn twin sisters. It all got squared away but how scary is that?

Yeah, she had to have a govt worker in the room with her for her next birth to prove she was the mom. Then they did a DNA test and it came back the same as the siblings. So evidently the twin became at least her ovaries

Can someone explain how this works, considering budgies hatch from eggs? I understand how it happens in animals like cats, but I don't see how it happens for egg-born animals. Is it like a twin-egg thing? I've seen those before (but usually with chickens)

As the world continues its current trend of environmental degradation, we have driven another 1 million animal and plant species to the brink of extinction, all of which could disappear from the Earth within decades, according to the UN’s 2019 Global Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Service.

This devastating rate of extinction highlights the fact we’re in the midst of a sixth mass extinction event, and even more worryingly, it’s accelerating. Scientists note that without the human destruction of nature, this rate of loss would have taken thousands of years.

That long feather isn't there all year. And finding the discarded feathers is supposed to be very good luck. I hired a guide in Costa Rica to help us spot the birds, it was not the right season for the long feathers. He told us that he has been trying to find a discarded feather for 15 years. One day he took a Danish couple out for a hike, and ten minutes in the wife looks down and finds one. He has never hated anyone so much in his life. 😜 They are gorgeous birds, even without the tail feathers.

Just a quick note about weed killer. The neighbor's down the block all used to work in their yards...daily. They are all right next door house's. Each one of the women have gotten cancer. They used the weed killer that's on tv for a lawsuit if you used it and got cancer. They were horrible people but I don't like to see anyone with cancer. So please be careful..

Another benefit of goats: goats don't cause cancer! (As far as I know. I could be wrong...)

They’ll leave the woody brambles, though. My brother got the bright idea of buying (not renting) goats to get rid of a large bramble bush in his yard. They ate everything green. He ended up with a lawn of mostly dirt, no ornamentals, no non-bramble bushes, and a large, ugly, bramble bush devoid of leaves. He ended up having to sell the goats, hire someone to remove the bush, and paying to reseed his lawn and replace his other plantings.

There's a guy in my town who rents his goats to municipalities to eat up the kudzu. It's about the only thing that works.

There are also places that rent out ladybirds (ladybugs) to clear commercial greenhouses of aphid infestations. They just release thousands of ladybirds into the greenhouses and leave them for a few days before collecting them. They are voracious predators of aphids and will hunt out and eat every last one.

One of my favorite memories of my time living in Los Angeles is the day I got off the subway in downtown and was greeted by the sight of 30 or so goats happily munching away at an overgrown abandoned lot :)

First we destroy nature and decimate the populations, and then we spend millions to re-create nearly extinct species, while we go on destroying their habitats. We humans are a mad species!

I'm curious whether their becoming so endangered has any connection to them being collected from the wild for domestic breeding. I know that is happening with a lot of parrots and reptiles in Brazil.

No, they became endangered because humans were killing off all the prairie dogs, their normal prey.

If you like wolves, please check out Howling Woods Farm. If you can make it out there, for thirty bucks you can spend an hour playing with the wolves. If you can't, consider donating. They are a non profit and all money goes to the care of the animals. Many of which have been rescued and would have been killed in other states.

There are also 388 species of land vertebrates with populations under 5,000 individuals, 84% of them live in the same regions as the species with populations under 1,000, creating conditions for a domino effect where close ecological interactions of species on the brink tend to move other species towards extinction.

Officially 'little penguin', sometimes called 'blue penguin' or 'fairy penguin'. They make an enormous range of sounds at night. You could probably identify which penguin is which in a colony of several hundred individuals just by the sound. One of the loudest sounds is a braying sound like a donkey. A must visit in Australia is the Phillip Island penguin parade near Melbourne.

If you ever make it to Phillip Island do the tour that takes you to the beach away from everybody. It is a bit more expensive, but so worth it. Sitting on the beach and having the walk by so close to you is adorable.

If you stand still when they are coming in for the night they will walk close to you thinking you are a tree. They also always use the same route to get onto land as their ancestors. It makes some hilarious viewing if it is up and down rocks

These lol guys are so shy and sweet. I hated seeing them at the Auckland zoo, they did not seem happy with having hundreds of people come into their homes and point at them every day. Made me very sad. We unknowingly camped near a nest one year for NYE in the South Island, and when I heard their precious little noises (they sound like they're talking to each other!) from the tent at night I cried, thinking they must be so scared and confused. They're just little babies!

It's like in some cultures they take turns minding and\or taking care of the kid's. So if one mom is washing the clothes another mom will nurse her baby and her own. I've seen them with three or four babies at a time. My mom said my grandma would take my uncle to her step mom who had a baby and she would nurse my uncle and her own daughter.

Fun fact: Psittacosaurus is one of the ancestors of ceratopsids like Triceratops, so some paleontologists have hypothesized that the quills seen on Psitaccosaurus could have been on some Trikes! They also could have been omnivores, with how sharp their beaks were!

As forests are home to more than 80% of all terrestrial species of animals, plants, and insects, it is crucial we halt and reverse deforestation if we want to restore and protect the world's animal and plant species.

Illicit poaching and wildlife trafficking remain huge threats to biodiversity and animal species to this day, with nearly 7,000 species of animals and plants reported in illegal trade involving 120 countries. While far stricter enforcement and conservation efforts have already helped many historically poached species to recover, we must continue these efforts to save the critters we see in the pictures.

Donkeys are wonderful and great guardians of other animals! The "stubborn" concept comes from them refusing a request from humans that they deem dangerous or foolish, bc they do in fact, plan ahead.

There is a herd of Scottish Cattle near my house, and they keep a donkey in with them, to keep the coyotes from getting the calves. They are vicious. Sometimes you hear the coyotes, then you hear the donkey, like it is warning them before they even try.

Cheetahs evolved out of the Puma lineage in Africa when Puma were much more widespread than the Americas. In a completely separate event, very cheetah-like animals evolved out of the Puma lineage again, this time in North America. And it happened twice there, with at least two cheetah-like Pumas evolving. It's as though cheetah-ness is a little trick Pumas keep in their back pocket just in case.

My boys love strokes and even ask for more (by reaching their head toward my hand when I pull away) when they're really in the mood! Super contented rats grind their teeth together (bruxing), so you know they like it! On special occasions my boys 'boggle'...look up rat boggling if it interests you...has to be seen to be believed! My rats hang out on my shoulder, grooming themselves or sleeping while I play video games. They are the most affectionate creatures ever and they melt my heart every day...they just love being near me 😍

Elephants in captivity are, for safety reasons and logistics, artificially inseminated, but I know of (and can find) no cases of IVF ever having been used. Among other things, IVF would require sedation, which is something you want to avoid. Approximately 1% of elephant births result in twins. It’s rare, but natural. (I was present for an AI procedure and worked in the education department at a zoo. Educating the public about Elephants was one of my specialties.)

Google Novosibirsk Zoo Pallas Cat and you'll see the little ones have that very same facial expression! The species is called Otocolobus manul, literally "round-eared manul", with "manul" being the Pallas's cat's name in the Kyrgyz language, but I think something like "disapprovicus manul" would suit them better.

Crocodilians are more closely related to dinosaurs than they are to other reptiles. So an alligator is more closely related to a turkey than to a lizard. Considering that crocodilians lay their eggs in nests and care for their young, at least in the most basic way, that is not that surprising. They also have four-chambered hearts like birds, while snakes and lizards have three chambered hearts.

Additionally, a polar bear’s skin is black and their hair is clear - not white. The clear shafts act like tiny magnifying glasses concentrating heat from the sun, which the black skin absorbs to keep them warm. It’s so efficient they give off almost no heat signature. It also makes them prone to overheating.

I've had multiples too and looked it up. Apparently they congregate with each other during winter months and search for food together during that time. It's also possible you had a family - the young cardinals apparently stick with their parents for about 40 days after leaving the nest.

Be careful with giving enclosed running wheels to your pet rats, though. They can develop nasty spinal issues and even end up with their tail permanently stuck pointing upward. Open ones like this are better.

Size seems to be a major issue. Just because they CAN run in a wheel for a limited timespan without instantly developing problems, their spine is bent too far. About twice the size of the ones everyone knows is a good measure to start with. Diameter > 2'body length or so, I read, but may be standing corrected, is the minimum to be considered not unhealthy.

This hippo is trained. I watched the video of him Cleaning it's teeth. He taps the hippo's snoot & the hippo opens up. The hippo seems to enjoy the Cleaning.
