Most folks had some science fiction or fantasy universe they would have loved to live in as a child. After all, the future, with its flying cars, robot assistants and magical long life seemed like it would all be a great time. But the last few years have done a lot to diminish that optimism.

We’ve gathered images from current America that might be more reminiscent of dystopian fiction, from bosses with bizarre, controlling rules, to how hopeless the job market has become. So settle in, brace yourself, upvote the most interesting submissions and be sure to leave your thoughts in the comments down below.

We Owe For A Surgery That Was Pre Approved By Our Health Insurance

Medical bill payment screen showing a large amount due with option for a monthly payment plan in a dystopian US scene.

BCBS is completely screwing my wife and I with 45k in medical debt over a surgery that was pre approved and accepted by them. I’m so sick of the health insurance scam in the US.

I collapsed earlier this week. Slurred speech, wonky face. Turned out to be inner ear infection and lopsidedness from a tooth extraction. The paramedics thought it might be a possible stroke so got a ride in an ambulance to hospital, CT scan, blood tests, EKG. Got some pills that help a lot and now have to wait until it goes away. Total cost £9.90. Luckily I pre-paid £114 per year to get all prescriptions 'free' so didn't have to pay a thing. Fine now, just a bit wobbly.

I don't live in the U.S. Several years ago my wife had surgery. The doctor's visits, specialist consultation, surgery, hospital stay, all free. But I must have spent $30.00 for parking at the hospital over several days of visiting her. Now that's something to complain about.

My labor union did a fundraiser for local schoolchildren to pay for their lunches. If they didn't pay, the school would only provide a milk and peanut butter and jelly sandwich. So, it was a stigmatizing thing for the children who would have to eat that at lunch. They were teased and called "PB&J kids". Sickening that we can give tax breaks to private plane owners, but won't pay to feed schoolchildren.

People use the word "dystopia" in two overlapping meanings: as a genre of literature and as shorthand for future-or-present-that-doesn't-feel-so-good. Ultimately it's the opposite of utopia, a world imagined to be imperfect, not as faulty but as corrupt, where one or two plausible changes to our world have been extended too far and recreated as known. When someone says "this is dystopian," they usually mean something more than "I don't like it": they mean the system itself controls people's lives in ways which feel inevitable, oppressive, or morally degrading.

Most readers recognize a dystopia by trope rather than by a single prop. There usually is a break,an authentic hinge, like some technological breakthrough, some climatic catastrophe, or some political fusion, and a set of institutions that form around that hinge and make institutional sense of its rationality.

Reminds me of a guy here in town who does itinerant bike repair. He hauls his tools around in a little van and he fixes bikes. Portland is a very bike-centric city so a lot of us bike. Folks envision the rules those institutions promulgate: what permits you to have on hand, how speech is regulated, what kind of jobs there are. Those institutional details are what make abstract fears more concrete. The average person sees dystopia as a world where everyday habits, rituals and forms constantly remind you who's in charge.

Years ago, PBS got 80%+ from the feds, bc it was needed to provide educational content for children. Today, they get most of their budget from donations and sponsors, and will continue to do so.

The second element of the popular idea of dystopia is the built world and sensory feel of life within the regimes. People imagine isolated cities, gated enclaves for some and abandonment for others, blaring loudspeakers and public spectacle, ration tickets and synthetic food. All the small, repetitive things, the smell of water rationing, the hum of the drones, the announcements, that's how the notion of "dystopia" is made real and tangible. When a world is described only in sweeping ideology, people are preached at; when it's shown in the grain of ordinary life, it reads as dystopia because you can almost do the routines yourself.

If you neglect to pay them you could potentially be jailed for unpaid fines. Depending on the weather jail may be better than the street, and that is just a sad observation.

The whole project was scrapped by Walmart after a couple years. It proved in all its iterations to be ineffective, unreliable and led to swaths of customer complaints. They failed at a first attempt in 2012-2014, failed again in an updated version in 2017-2018, and utterly failed in 2019-2022. A company (Stop&Shop) attempted to roll this out on other brands, but I can't find a single success story outside of news directly traceable to their press releases.

Technology is at the center of much of our modern use of the term. Informally, "dystopian" often means "surveilled" or "algorithmically regulated": cameras, facial and voice recognition, social credit, predictive policing, constant targeted advertising. But devices themselves, no, but a kind of sixth sense whispers that dystopia emerges wherever technologies making life easier or healthier also produce new mechanisms of control and new markets for power. Popular perception is that technology is a miracle and trap, convenience will come at the cost of privacy, autonomy, or dignity, and that conflict is a synonym for dystopia.

That would certainly explain the two years of utterly pointless applications I've been forced to fill out just to keep my unemployment benefits, knowing full well none will even get a response other than the odd vague "candidates more closely aligned with the role" BS. It's all but deliberately designed to make the unemployed feel completely hopeless and apathetic about their situation ever changing.

True. But also, financial illiteracy at its finest. If your (predatory) repayment plan is designed to cover only interest, you should be aware that you should pay some more at any occasion to start chipping away at the principal, else you will be stuck with it with your whole life. There is a reason why interest-only loans are heavily regulated by EU banking authorities, and often subject to strict limits on debt volume, proof of financial solidity and how those debt can be traded.

I was lucky, got out without any in the 90's. Wife had about 30K. She consolidated them all and we ended up with a loan at 2% or so. That was super cheap compared to the 6-8% we were paying on the house etc. So we only paid the minimums. Took until around 2015 to pay off. Managed to get the kid through without. His current GF has over 100K. Ya just can't win.

Language, symbols, and memory are another vector to which people associate dystopias. If history has been rewritten, words have become weapons, or propaganda slogans occupy the public square, then the world is closed and constructed. Ordinary citizens identify these acrobatics as attacks on shared meaning: when you cannot speak truthfully of the past or call what is happening in the moment, disobedience is not merely dangerous but ideologically complex.

A news report says: The smart doors display a digital screen that shows what products are inside the cooler, as well products' nutritional information, price and availability. The doors also display full-screen ads. According to the Cooler Screens website, the doors use front-facing sensors and internally-facing cameras. Three internally-facing cameras track what products are inside the cooler to show inventory and positioning, while front-facing sensors detect customers' presence and interaction. The sensors do not collect or store shoppers' data, nor seek to identify them through facial recognition, the company's website says. Instead, the sensors track customers' presence, dwell time and door opens.

Scarcity and stratification are what readers also seek in a dystopia. Not necessarily famine; rather more frequently that goods needed are being rationed, access is partitioned, and small comforts or basic rights are now class markers. Black markets, forged documents, or furtive exchange in everyday life apprise readers the system is under stress and unequal, which is central to the common perception of dystopia: living under structural shortage, where survival requires moral sacrifice.

The real problem here is not only about private/public health, but about totally outrageous prices. Comparisons are always deficient, since societies are a whole, but an ambulance in my country (Spain), without insurance of any case (private/public), is €150 h (or fraction), non medicalized, or 260 h (or fraction), medicalized. The price here is like 25 hours (!) of medicalized ambulance in my country.

Yes! As I wrote in an earlier post, when I had to go to the hospital for a kidney stone here in France I called a friend to drive me because I didn't know that the ambulance here is either free or minimal and is covered by French health services. And my ride would have been 25 kilometres, so I assumed it would be be 10 to 15 thousand like it would be in the US.

I just spent 6 days in the VA hospital for surgery and recovery. But because in 1970 I was too poor to afford bones spurs, my draft number 17, and I'm not a fücking coward and I served in the US Army for just under two years, it was all free. But there wasn't a single person I met there, staff or patient, that didn't believe it was the standard of care EVERY American deserved to have for free. (btw- I think draft resistors were not draft dodgers. Fleeing your country for your beliefs is not a cowardly act.)

Had a diabetic patient who developed severe hypoglycemia during a church service. Parishoners called 911 (emergency number) and the patient was treated by EMTs and transferred 1/4 mile (0.15 km) to the hospital ER, where she was checked and discharged. The bill came to something like $4000. Her insurer (I think UnitedHealthCare) refused to pay anything, because she was transported by an "out-of-network" ambulance, which happened to be the only ambulance. Her "in-network" ambulance was a 45-60 minute drive away. Patient was a nurse/Diabetes Educator, and we worked together to file a complaint with the "Connecticut Managed Care Ombudsman." The denial was repealed, but had we not "known the ropes" she would have been stuck, which is probably the case with most "normal" people. Gotta love it, says this endocrinologist.

As a union worker, my pay is about 25% higher and my benefits 80% higher than a non-union worker in the same industry. My union dues are about 2% of my wages. I have better safety, a voice in my workplace, training, and job security. Union workers are also more productive and I get production bonuses. And more importantly, I never have to kiss a*s for advancement opportunities. So, tell me again how this is a bad deal for me?

Police cars have those lights and bright colors to make them MORE visible. Look at how they've changed the outfit over the years. We've gone from Andy Griffith's tan and Dragnet's blue to black tactical vests and camo gaiters.

It's super weird. My Dad and uncle were cops, and I remember when the first plate carrier vests came out when AP ammunition was flooding the streets in the 90s. Departments wanted their cops protected, but they still wanted them to look like cops and not soldiers. So the vests were made to look like uniform shirts. Complete with normal blue, brown/tan, or grey colors, standard shirt pockets, and "shirt "buttons" down the front. Now the local sheriff's department in my hometown looks like Marines in Fallujah, 24/7.

How much money do I have to pay them to get the model that doesn't remind me that he only one who wished me a happy new year this year was my toothbrush 😂I know I'm an introvert, you don't have to rub it in... well, more of a vibrating massaging motion than just rubbing it in, I guess.

I never understood this - not the _optional_ ink subscription model itself, which may or may not work for some people, but why so many people apparently went for it in the first place and then complained later. Did they just not read the details and think they were getting a printer at a bargain price?

This. I tried the subscription for a while and it was okayish, but they do make it fairly clear what you're signing up for when you start it up. I've since switched to an ink tank printer, which costs more up front but the ink refills last for thousands of prints.

A bit of history: Walking ads, or "sandwich boards" carried by people, emerged in 19th-century London as a way to avoid competition for wall space and an advertising tax. Terrible to think that paying people a minimum wage would be cheaper than posting an ad somewhere now.

My doctor said, yeah, the formulation is not the same and it doesn't work the same way. He petitioned to have me use the name brand. Was denied. The whole place is a bit cringe. It does, however, have some excellent p**n shops off the strip. I went to one that.... I think? was a technically a p**n shop, but he seemed be more specifically collecting war memorabilia. Guy had actual WWI and WWII equipment for sale. The prices were pretty good, too. I got a WWI trench helmet and gas mask (I collect helmets and masks) for like $70. Sure the straps were rotted away, but even for damaged gear I'd have expected to pay more than $100.

This is so sad. A year and a half ago I went to the ER here in France late at night for a kidney stone (thought it was appendicitis). I was there 5 or 6 hours, had IV fluids, plenty of tests run, and an MRI scan. They diagnosed the kidney stone, gave me pain meds and a referral, and three months later sent me a bill for 350 euros, most of which is covered by the carte de séjour. My friends asked why I didn't call an ambulance because I was in so much pain and I explained that in the US an ambulance would cost thousands and thousands of dollars and they laughed and said, "Well, it's free here." Live and learn.

To be clear to readers, the 'Carte de Séjour' is not itself healthcare-related, but is what gives MN the right to live in France, and therefore to access the mostly-free French healthcare system.

In Australia and England it cost a penny, which led to the saying 'I'm going to spend a penny' when you need to go to the toilet. Last time I saw one (no longer pennies as we decimalised money) was in Alice Springs in 2007, not sure if others still exist.

The blood-draw lab I use (I'm old, okay?) has these. I've found they encourage conversations and interactions between the people waiting. Much nicer than sitting quietly under the judgemental eye of a receptionist trying to do their job in the midst of a small crowd. Will admit the most common conversation starter is "Does anyone know how this works?!?"

We have that to sign in for appointments in the UK. If you need to speak to the receptionist about anything else, you ring a bell - works very well, and the system tells the doc/nurse rhat you have arrived, as well as telling you whether there's any delay ( eg, appoinments running 20 mins late)

There's... How do I say this. There's an AI bot for all circumstances. Usually sexual. I don't know about this one since I don't know what the host is. Go on to a character card site (they're like bot instructions that users put together and share, generally telling the bot how to act as a character). There is a search tag for "Autistic as f**k" and most of the bots who have this tag are NSFW bots for intimate chat. And no, that is not using "Autistic as f**k" as an insult to the bot's quality. They're bots where the main attraction is that the bot's personality is autistic as f**k. I'm not sure how I feel about this. On one hand i suppose it's mildly flattering, but on the other hand it's moderately concerning.

Yeah, that's totally false rage bait. "These containers were installed by UC Berkeley at People's Park as part of efforts to secure the site for planned student housing development. Purpose: The containers serve as a barrier, preventing access to the park area where construction is intended to take place." Not intended to keep homeless out, but to keep everyone out of an active construction site.

I'm not sure on the overall prevalence, but they do sometime still advertise them on signs. It's less common, but you'll see them frequently advertised on the outsides of gas stations or smoke shops (Which I suppose would be an obvious thing). Some of the older gas stations around still even have the good ole' Marlboro sign on display.

Signed by the guy who had a photoshoot with the wrong version of the bible, and held it upside down.

Oklahoma is trying to pass a law that every university in the state must install a Charlie Kirk statue in a prominent location on campus. This is not made up.

If you work in the industry, most places give the staff free meals. That's been my experience. Still I wouldn't walk across the street for free Dominoes. They're worse than that 7-11 piza that's been under a heat lamp for six hours.
