When TV stations were about what they claimed to be about...
MTV
History Channel
Discovery Channel
Science Channel
TLC (The Learning Channel)
AMC (American Movie Classics)
ABC Family Channel
A&E
I loved when History channel actually aired history. Now it's guys fighting each other with chainsaws and aliens.
Thank You those channels use to informative and fun to watch now they're cringe worthy.
Load More Replies...MTV! I'm old enough to remember the first day it came on, and all the great videos of the 80s. And TLC - all I learn now is that some women aren't aware that they are pregnant and that some folks have WAY too many kids.
Tlc =That's a lot of children. Seriously i miss there theme weeks they did. Each week all the shows were about one subject like space.

The first time I saw WWE wrestling on the Sci-Fi channel years ago, I knew we were in a downward spiral.
Good quality products that are designed to last
I don't get this one. Good quality products are still everywhere, you just need find them. And they will cost you more, but it's worth it.
appliances. that's all i have to refute this. Find me an appliance that is built this way new. Find me a dishwasher as good as the Hobart KitchenAid Superba from 1975. I'll wait.
Load More Replies...Whenever I see "No user serviceable parts inside", I tend to regard it as a challenge. And as often as not, there are in fact "user serviceable parts inside". You just need to get the right kind of screwdriver to get it apart.
Load More Replies...How many phones, tablets and computers go into landfills either because they have been designed to fail after a short period of time or we have been conditioned by marketing to replace them for the newer better model? I had a flip phone that I kept around as an emergency phone - I bought it in the mid 90s and it finally stopped working in 2022 - so that was probably at least 25 years that it functioned - how many phones made today would be built to last that long?
you still find them. The shoe brand I buy, lasts. Have one pair for 15 years, had to have the heels replaces 3 times and the sole once, but the shoe looks near new and very good quality men's dress shoe. They cost a bit more up front, but it is worth every penny given the quality and how it lasts
The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money. Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles. But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while a poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet. This was the Captain Samuel Vimes "Boots" theory of socioeconomic unfairness.
Load More Replies...Capitalism provides abundance, not necessarily quality so we have a lot more options but quality can be hard to find.
My parents bought a washer and dryer when they got married in the late 70's, and they lasted 30 years. The ones they purchased after barely lasted 10.
You think that was the case in the 1990s? Nope, people then were also complaining at how things weren't as good as they used to be. It's an illusion, because each generation only sees those things that survived from the previous generations with no idea about the other 95% of stuff that fell apart.
While some of this might be correct there's also a bias toward long lasting quality products. Those are just the ones that survived. There has always been c**p that broke in a 2 month notice.
Being able to afford housing on middle income.
Unfortunately this is gone and I don't see it making a return. People like their expensive lattes and avocado toast to much to save enough money to buy a house./s Yes I was being sarcastic. The housing market has been destroyed by to many things too list here.
Mostly speculation and investors / late stage capitalism. Not by people who need a roof over their heads.
Load More Replies...Gen X here (will be 44 in May) I'm disabled, getting next to nothing in SSD. My husband works at Walmart. The ONLY reason I own a house is that I inherited it when my mom was killed in June and she happened to have enough in her bank account (again lucky she put me on her account as a co-owner) to pay off the reverse mortgage. Otherwise, I would have lost the house. Unluckily, I am still trying to clean and empty so I can hopefully renovate/rebuild to make the house wheelchair accessible.
My landlord just put my rent up by $40 a week. My sons place went up by $80 a week. (he lives in the rough part of a major city and I live in a middle income part of a small regional city). Not sure how people are meant to get by anymore unless they have multiple streams of income.
Living in a little town in MT here. Small towns don't have jobs that pay high enough for the cheap houses. Most people who can afford property are renting it out at outrageous rates. You could make $25 an hr in Phoenix AZ, and here the same job is $12. Same company, same job, different state. You can't afford to have a house that isn't dilapidated on that.
My country has super a category of houses that are called super duper normal houses rss, basically super cheap. Less than 36m2 building land less than 60m,2 Price would be 10kusd to 20k usd I think. Don't expect to find these in the capital though rofl.
I don’t think that’s what this posting is about ! Otherwise I’de be asking to be 40 years younger and in better health !
There have been a bunch of articles written about the fact that housing affordability has changed in the last few decades. For example in Sydney the average income is currently six times higher than it was in 1981, but the average house price is now over sixteen times higher than it was in 1981. This isn’t an issue of normal indexing of prices.

Physical items for music, video games, movies, etc. (this isn't actually discontinued yet but with the current trend it wouldn't surprise me if everything just moves completely to streaming in ~10 years)
Too many things are moving to digital where you don't actually own anything. All you have is a license to use the digital media. The last time I bought a physical game disc, the only thing it did was install Origin on my computer and provide a license key to download the game. My current car has built in Spotify instead of a CD player.
Maybe I'm becoming "old man ranting about change" but I'm concerned about how everything's become a monthly subscription service where the companies control what you have access to and can remove things whenever they want.
Yes, however buying digital instead of physical saves previous minerals and other resources that otherwise would've had to be mined and manufactured. It's a very small thing, but I like to think that it has at least this benefit.
Except there is a real resource cost to build and power the infrastructure that holds all of this now-virtual media. It is NOT nearly as green as you might hope.
Load More Replies...Physical is and will always be better. Dvds, blu rays and disc based video games. Streaming is awful in the long run. They can remove favorite movies and shows anytime so you can no longer view your favorites. Nothing really good to store a bunch of digital films and shows you buy. I say if they want to replace disc and dvds, to do something like Nintendo has done with switch games, putting them on a sd card like aspect. That can be even worthy for big games and save from having to install them on a console too.
Buy the DVD or Blu Ray with digital codes. Best of both worlds.
Load More Replies...Yes because you can be denied access to the media if you stream. If you somehow break your service agreement guess what you can no longer access it. Plus we don't always have internet access.
I'm definitely old. I almost cried when I learned I HAD to have internet to play over half my Switch games. I was hoping it was like Gameboy or DS. Just a console, something I can play when internet is down.
I bought a physical copy of a game a few years ago to avoid using Steam (I am not going to use Steam), and it turned out that the disk contents were literally the product key for the Steam version, and the Steam installer. Was mad, can't get a physical copy of it apparently, and the game is not on GOG so ew.
Some trees are grown to be cut down, for profit. So I don't feel guilty about buying books.
it's a little thing but why is reputation in the rock/r&b category? it's pure pop
I am resisting subscribing to mp3 streaming services till I am forced to. I still use the files and reject streaming. At least if my internet is down I can still hear my music.
My only rant about streaming is why can't we stream everything from everywhere? Netflix UK and other countries have different programs that aren't available in the US. If it is one company like Netflix, why can't we see everything that is in each country?
The $1 menu at every fast food joint
This!!! I was hungry and stopped at McDonalds, a basic hamburger was two dollars. Didnt they make more money with the dollar menus? Back in the day I would get a double cheeseburger from McD, fries from BK and a frosty from Wendys for $3.20. I miss those days
Btw, Wendy's has a thing where you can buy a key chain (it's like 2 dollars) and get a free junior Frosty with the purchase of something else!
Load More Replies...Its almost $10 now for just a large double cheeseburger meal there.
Ahhh, the good ol days, when we could get 5 beef n cheddar sandwiches for 5 bucks at Arby's
I'm old enough to remember when Taco Bell had a 59 79 and 99 cent menu. For years a bean burrito was 99 cents. I ordered one recently, and it was $2.50!
And they are tiny now! I'm so old we could get a bean burrito and a large drink for $2.99 (w/tax).
Load More Replies...YAASS! Now Everything's SOO OverPriced! No Thanks, towards most things now.
Modern MBA talks about how Burger King shot themselves in the butt over their dollar menu.
I'm assistant manager at BK and they shot themselves badly! Last February our privately owned store was bought by a corporate one with 100s...the price raises were instant. Everything got raised by over a dollar an item! We lost 25% of our customers so they cut our allowed labor. Lost another 25% because of wait times for food. Fast food should be fast and cheap... they aren't allowing either.
Load More Replies...I think this is more in relation to loss leaders. Often people would buy a $1 burger and the company would make no money on that. But since the person was in the shop they'd also buy a drink or chips or a sundae and they'd make their profit there.

Not discontinued, but Levi’s definitely changed how they made their jeans. They just don’t fit the same, and the materials feel very different.
The material is different now. Some styles may still be cotton or cotton and a little spandex, but a blend of polyester and cotton is more common and it doesn't feel right.
It's a compilation goal to cut costs to increase profit. Never fails that corporations destroy the very things they produce.
They removed 2 belt loops so I found some Wrangler jeans that had all the belt loops and they fit my dad body better.
Right? I bought a pair of 505s from Amazon. Same EXACT size and style of the pair I'd worn to death. Could barely get them on and the material was really thin & insubstantial feeling - not at ALL like Levi denim should feel. I found some Lee jeans at Walmart that actually feel like jeans and fit perfectly.
**Jello Brand pudding pops.** There is nothing else like it in the market, and anything that I have found doesn't taste the same. I just want my pudding pops back danggit.
My naturally produced serotonin
The worst part was, my f*****g body decided it would stop producing it when I needed it the most, adulthood.
It’s like WTF brain? Make me happy.
Brain: Nah, f**k off you don’t need this. Happiness dies at 18.
I'm still working on the correct formula. It is exhausting and depressing.
I was on that, at it was hell to wean off of! Now I'm on mirtazapine, which has less side effects and the added bonus of enabling me to fall asleep within 15 minutes most nights, which I had not done since I was in preschool.

I get the most joy If I see cats or if my partner is laughing - that's why I call him the laugh in my life. He does it loud enough for both of us and I can smile over this
Stop taking molly. it depletes serotonin, sometimes permanently if you take enough of it
go for a run and afterwards take some ephedrine. works great. oh wait you said naturally produced. s**t.
90's nickelodeon. Legends of the hidden temple, are you afraid of the dark, double dare, pete&Pete. Etc.
You can't do that on Television ... was my first Nickelodeon show as soon as we got cable. My Mom hated it because the chef picked his nose and put it in the burgers ... yeah, not sure why I liked the show
I loved it, too! Had a crush on Kevin. kevin-643f...1ac96c.jpg
Oh, God. The "Are You Afraid of the Dark," series and the "Goosebumps," books. When did we decide to stop traumatizing children?
I believe they did bring back are you afraid of the dark. I haven't seen the new one but I'm pretty sure it exists
I loved You Can’t Do That on Television and Double Dare. My brother and I were sure we would win Double Dare. You climb up the slide using the sides, not the middle where all the stuff was!!
Alanis Morrisette of "Ironic" fame got her start on you cant do that, the show was made in Ontario, Canada.
The optimism of the 1990s
As a teenager then, there was a very real sense of optimism that the world was getting better and the future was going to be bright for everyone. You can still see it if you watch 90s tv shows.
And the no labels of them as well. I got into high-school in 1992. Our goal was to completely eradicate labels and just be seen like everyone else. Now? Everyone not only has a label, they want to make sure you know it too.
Yup seriously miss all of that happy gleeful grunge music, lots of themes revolving around optimism. Goth/emo had a big resurgence in the 90’s also, supper playful and full of optimism. Thinking about movies like Trainspotting and the heroin epidemic in the 90’s also brings a fond smile of positivity and nostalgia to mind.
9/11 changed the optimism that a lot of folks felt at the end of the century
I'm a child of the 80s. I'm still optimistic. 80s delusionism is to the bone.
Very much so! The cold war was over, the economy was booming, the dotcom bubble hadn't popped yet and some scientist even proclaimed 'the end of history'.

All my favorite tops that ever wore out. The fashion train just moves on regardless, you can never go back and just purchase the same awesome undyed linen blouse with the frog closures and Chinese collar, you have to start all over again no matter how much you hate shopping because walking around naked isn't an option.
I had a 90s flannel, mostly blue, great style. I wore that thing to death, when it was too ratty to wear in public, 6 still wore it at home, I slept in that shirt. RIP perfect flannel shirt.
90's fashion trends are roaring back, I bet you might be able to buy that shirt again soon!
Load More Replies...When I find something I really love, if I can, I buy 2. Wear it to death and then I have another one. But at today’s prices it’s becoming more difficult to do that.
I almost fainted last week when the sales lady in Etam told me that my favorite bra, the one that I’ve been using for ten years now, is discontinued. Yesterday another one made me happy but finding a couple in my size in the back of the shop. I have some time to look for a replacement.
OMG! That is just the worst when that happens.
Load More Replies...The patches lighting up under the armpits wasn't exactly a Lewk.
Load More Replies...Same. I bought a couple of shirts at Kohl's when I visited my Mom in Phoenix. LOVED them. I'm pretty busty so I prefer loose fitting V-necks (otherwise I look like a refrigerator). Back home in San Diego about 6 months later & decided to get a few more. Same story as with the Levi's. Exact same brand, size & style, but obviously a different factory/manufacturer - they weren't as loose fitting, shorter and the sleeves weren't as long (I have a large Celtic armband tattoo that I don't always want showing). Oh - and they shrunk a bit when I washed them.
That is why I will always wear t-shirts, jeans, sneakers, and hoodies.
I have basic, basic choice in clothes. Plain, solid colors on comfortable fabric that fits and doesn't make me look like a freak. Damn near impossible. When I find something that works, I buy it in bulk. And keep buying it in bulk. That's because it disappears. Store changes brands. Brands change their quality or discontinue the style. How do you discontinue a plain black t-shirt? Why? There has never been a change in fashion so drastic or severe where you cannot work a plain black t-shirt into your outfit. So why?
Lifesavers creams
They have them in rolls at Cracker Barrel restaurants!

We used to have a chain of restaurants called Souper Salad. It was just a salad bar with like 3 options of soup but it was cheap and all you could eat. I took it for granted back then, and now I miss it so much. 🥲
Soup Plantation! Loved it, all you could eat and great blueberry muffins (with honey butter)
I used to visit Sweet Tomatoes (same company) when I visited the US. It was a very special treat, especially their Big Chunk Chicken Noodle Soup.
Load More Replies...I miss Bonanza restaurants. They had a kick a*s buffet and the burgers were prolific
Ponderosa, too. Early on,they had faux rough hewn old west logging camp style giant long table seating, where you would (gasp) find yourselves seated amongst the other 'ranch hands'.. Later on they switched to tables and booths, good times! Ya still see an occasional Sizzler here and there, love(d) those places, hoss.
Load More Replies...I think I went to one of these. It was on a trip with my brother so I think it was in Colorado. Related thing I miss is back in the 80s Sizzler had an inexpensive salad bar that included a taco bar and had good stuff like avocado halves. You could have a really filling / healthy meal for cheap.
Altoids Sours.
Love them so much, still have some of the old tins I use to store random things.
I would put three crystals in a cup of green tea and it was delicious
Lofty pursuits (www.pd.net) makes candy that tastes just like these!
I hate Bluetooth headphones and wish phones still had a headphone jack.
You must have an iPhone. You want the jack back, buy an Android. I got a new Google phone just last week and it has a jack for headphones at the top.
They're cutting down on jacks, too. I wanted a new Samsung and had to research quite a bit, because I also wanted one with a micro sd slot, and they're getting discontinued as well.

McDonald's all day breakfast.
They cancelled breakfast bagels in UK, it was the only item on breakfast menu I loved besides hash browns. I would sometimes leave for work earlier and treat myself to breakfast bagel. Tried to make them at home but can’t get it right. Well, at least my waistline is thankful.

Pizza Hut in general. It used to be a mid-level sitdown restaurant. Red plates, decent salad bar, arcade. People used to look forward to eating dinner there.

Taco bell being cheap af. Used to be able to get 4 burritos and a drink for 10. Now its 20+
Edit: im aware of the app being cheaper. But theres was a time when you could go and get food for 5 bucks
Edit 2: the triple layer nachos was a personal favorite especially when they were $1 before they increased them and then discontinued them. I cry about it.
I miss that. "Can I get 2 Mexi Melts, 2 Cheezaritos, 3 chili cheese burritos, a Grilled Stuft burrito, a steak quesadilla, one taco supreme, and a bucket of Mountain Dew Code Red?" "Certainly sir. That will be 32 cents sir. Would you like any hot sauce with that?" "Can I have all the Fire Sauce you have in the building?" "Absolutely sir."
If you don't care what you eat, they still have meals for $5 on the app. Like three choices of combos. My kids liked 7 layer burritos, and to add all the stuff to a bean burrito brings it to$4 for one burrito!
Try Del Taco. They still have $5 meals, 4 items including a fountain drink.
i miss early 80s taco bell when it was GOOD and cheap...before KFC bought them out...everything was prepped in house...the meat, the veg, the beans...the menu was much more limited but the sour cream was real, the meat had texture and the veg was fresh...oh and they had real pico de gallo!...it wasn't chipotle in its prime...but is was good
Taco Bell has always been c**p food compared to a "real" Mexican restaurant but the positive used to be they were cheap food to stuff your face. Now I can buy the lunch special at a couple of local Mexican places for less money, I get table service and the food is hands down better. The only reason I can see for going to TB any more is if you are traveling and want something quick from the drive through to stuff in your hole.
I am 40 yo, and have never eaten at a taco bell...well, I have eaten in a Taco Bell, when I was a kid, but my parents always got me something from somewhere else, and then went to Taco Bell...so I got my McDonald's or Burger King, or whatever, and they got Taco Bell.
The Blue Raspberry Sour Skittle. They act like it never existed but I know better
I miss the sour skittles like the ones pictured, with the sour powder on the outside. They only lasted 12months at most in Australia, before they were replaced with ones that only have a slight sour flavour inside.
Blue raspberry anything is better than most flavors, let's be honest.
24 hour anything
Edit: While I know it is significantly less convenient than places being open, there has also been a tremendous push for places to have an online presence/online activity. So many people will complain acting like their website doesn't exist.
And even though I do miss the ability to go to McDonald's at 4am, I can understand they don't want to deal with the tweakers and homeless at the time. But I still wish it would come back
In Missouri, it was almost entirely people setting up full meth labs in our bathroom stalls. We honestly wouldn't give a caca if meth labs weren't prone to exploding randomly.

I miss going into Walmart somewhere between Midnight and 3:am to shop. NO Long A** Lines, No Rude People - maybe a few freaks but otherwise a peaceful shopping trip. I miss that.
I miss the city being active 24 hours a day. It felt like everything was always on, open, moving. I absolutely loved coming home late and stopping into a grocery store at 3am to grab snacks. Now everything is keeping bankers hours and it sucks. Sure, you can plan ahead, but responsibility doesn't feel the same as spontaneous synchronicity. I feel sorry for whoever is working grave shift.
Had a friend that was an exterminator. He told me NEVER go to a 24/7 restaurant because they don’t ever shut down to exterminate pests.
Aladdin's castle. It was an arcade in the local mall. I was heart broken when they closed that place down. So many good memories as a kid in that place.
I miss Sears, Walden Books, B.Dalton books and the game store at the local mall, that sold board games and D&D products. I haven't been to the mall in years because there isn't anything there and the traffic to get there is such a hassle to deal with.
I loved Waldon Books. I always got a book and a colossal cookie. Best day ever!
Load More Replies...Different name but the arcade in our mall has been suffering for years. It got smaller, changed to mostly higher profit games, moved to another (cheaper) location in the mall. Then it closed but currently we have another arcade place in the mall that serves some food sort of like an off brand chucky cheese kind of vibe. Walked past recently and it looked pretty dead. I get it though. Most kids can play amazing console games at home for close to free. And even the totally free games are better than what we had in arcades in the 70s.
I remember walking around the Mall "People Scoping (watching)" and the Smells of Deliciousness wafting thru the air from the Food Court. 😃😄😁 I miss that.
Ours was just call The Arcade. It was right next to Orange Julius. Man, I miss that arcade.
We had the Dream Macine arcade in Turfland Mall. I would spend endless hours there playing donkey kong and pac man
Ours was called the Tilt and Goldmine. As a non competitive individual, i spent very little time in these.
Ecto Cooler. When it came back temporarily a few years ago, I got some but figured it would be crappy like most nostalgia-bait food and drink. It was glorious. So damn tasty.
I loved ecto cooler too. I think it was an orange/mango/ other juice died green.
I loved it all the way back when it was called "Citrus Cooler", and it came in 48 oz. cans. Jeez, I'm old.
It paired VERY well with rum and vodka of all price ranges. Excellent bouquet with tangy, yet subtle aftertaste note...

I really miss Doo Dads. They were a snack mix years ago and none of the ones now have the same taste.
I’ve tried revisiting a lot of foods from my youth that I hadn’t eaten in years——even decades. So many of them tasted horrible. Did they change the mix? Did they opt for cheap ingredients? Or have my taste buds changed? I don’t know. But some of the cookies left my mouth feeling like it was coated with lard, some of the candy tasted like wax or chemical dye, and the rest just seemed like really bad tasteless (or s****y tasting) versions of what used to be really tasty food.

Thank their mascot. Hope their ad people got fired...in reality, guess they were laid off. ☺
Load More Replies...Even in the 00s, Quiznos was wicked expensive.
Load More Replies...Grilled Stuft Burrito from Taco Bell, and Pontiac cars
My first car was a Pontiac Grand Am. I loved that car so much that I drove it until the engine was literally unrepairable.
What I miss from Taco Bell is the bell beefer, taco on a hamburger bun.
I dearly loved my Pontiac Grand Prix 02 GTP with factory Bose stereo system. Until the transmission went out, had it rebuilt but never the same. They just didn't make the transmissions durable enough for the Grand Prix and it was a common problem with them. It still makes me sad.
My first grilled stuffed burrito was at Taco Bell. I loved that creamy taco sauce they used and the intense browning they gave the tortilla. I ate it until it was gone.
When Starbucks brewed 3 different flavors everyday. I am tired of pike place
When Starbucks had an actual espresso machine and not the automated thing. I ised to genuinely enjoy Starbucks in the early 2000's but now I find them weak and gross
In my country (Czechia), Starbucks has an actual espresso machine, the same huge ones you see in a lot of restaurants/coffeeshops.

The Verde sauce from Taco Bell.
Miiverse on the Wii U. I know many people didn’t own a Wii U, but it had a charm, it showed what people were playing and their thoughts on it in the home menu
I've seen screenshots from it.It sounds so freaking hilarious and like something I 100% would have participated in. I would probably just infodump about Sonic on there and make memes lol. But it doesn't exist anymore... I mean I get why but still-
I still mess around with my WiiU a few times a month! I love that thing!
Littlest Pet Shop toys
I've heard rumors they're coming back next year
OMG!!! I LOVE THESE SO MUCH!! I still have over 100 of these sitting on display on my bookshelf!
PB Crisp and Planter's Cheese Balls with the original recipe. The "original" ones they have now are total trash
I was so damn disappointed when they brought cheeseballs back; the taste was so disappointing
I tried the cheese curls and I remember the taste being of sharp cheddar. I couldn't decide if they changed the formula or my taste buds are getting older. Either way, I won't be buying it again.
Im a doll collector, so I would really like: OG Monster High (The reboot is fine, but the orignals are better), Ever After High, Lalalopsy, and the old 2000's Barbies.
I collect Boyds Bears. Really miss them and visiting Boyds Bear Country in Gettysburg.
Load More Replies...International Delight Cold Stone Creamery coffee cream. They discontinued it last month and I'm still in mourning. I need my coffee to taste like vanilla ice cream.
And TV channels never seen outside of the US, etc. This is hugely US centric.
Load More Replies...I really miss the Cartoon Network of the 90's and slightly beyond. Somehow, they even managed to ruin cartoons.
Oh and by the way, please leave stuff like housing, healthcare and politics out of threads like this, it just doesn't belong here. Yes, the world is deteriorating. We know. WE ALL KNOW. I came here to read about discontinued candy and TV-shows, I don't need to stumble upon that s**t in every single thread.
