50 Hilarious Experiences Of People Receiving Not What They Thought They Ordered (New Pics)
Interview With ExpertOnline shopping can be extremely convenient. But it's not without its flaws. It’s quite easy to be seduced by the promise of high-quality products for cheap prices. However, the deals can be too good to be true. Sometimes, to a frankly ridiculous extent!
Bored Panda has curated a list of photos from online shoppers who wanted to show off how the products they received were completely different from what they had ordered. Comically large wooden spoons and tiny fridges are just the tip of the iceberg. Scroll down for a refresher about why it’s vital to be careful when buying anything online.
Matt Johnson, Ph.D., a marketing psychology speaker and the host of the branding and human nature blogs, walked us through why online shopping appeals to so many people. He also gave his take on what e-commerce platforms ought to focus on, in order to better protect their customers from potential scams. You'll find the thoughts he shared with Bored Panda below.

Anyways, the spoon was part of a “3 feet of spaghetti” package (3 packs of spaghetti packaged in a line to look 3 feet long) and the spoon was just glued to the front as a gag I assumed. But apparently, as I found out today, it has an actual use as a huge stirring spoon for huge pots.
My sister could've really used that. She used 3 bags of rice for 3 people!!! I thought it was so funny

Online shopping is a massive phenomenon. In the United States alone, 200 million Americans, or nearly two-thirds of the population, shopped in person or online during Cyber Week in 2023—the 5 days running from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday.
This amounted to Americans spending a whopping $9.8 billion on Black Friday online sales, as well as a further $12.4 billion on Cyber Monday.
According to marketing psychology speaker Johnson, Americans and online shopping are "enmeshed in a deep love affair."
"There are many features that draw Americans in each year, especially on or around Black Friday. Online shopping appeals to many people deeply due to its convenience, offering the ability to browse and purchase products from the comfort of one's home or on the go, without the constraints of physical store hours," the host of the branding and human nature blogs explained to Bored Panda in an email.

Some people can be really clueless. I had someone to write 1 of 3, 2 of 3 and 3 of 3 for the 3 boxes to be shipped out. He wrote exactly that: each boxes had all "1 of 3, 2 of 3 and 3 of 3" written on them.
People who decorate cakes for a living really need to have a minimum IQ requirement. If you like cake fails like this, visit CakeWrecks.com
Load More Replies...Honestly, I think this type of "stupidity" goes both ways. I'm sure there have been times where someone corrected something a customer wrote and got bitched for it. Like if you saw a direction that said to put "2+2=5" on a cake, do you take that literally or do you correct it? Unless you contact them there's no way to know. It's Schrodinger' Cake Design Instruction. At some point, you just take whatever someone enters as literal and just be done with it. Even in this request, you can infer that they meant red frosting that outlines that literal cake, and not a design, but the actual direction isn't 100% clear. What they wrote can easily be interpreted that they wanted a rectangular solid design on the cake, with the top and bottom lines in red frosting. Good customer service would've called the client to clarify but, to me, this isn't that dumb. It just depends on how you go about interpreting that. And you probably don't get paid enought to really care. lmao
While I generally agree with you about customer errors, this one looks very unambiguous to me. The text above the drawing explains it clearly imo, and it explicitly states they want no text or design.

"The act of browsing itself has become a pastime—a way to cope with stress, enjoy a nice pick me up, or to take a break from a monotonous day at work. And, of course, what begins as a simple, innocent browsing can lead to significant purchases,” he said.
Online shops often offer more variety and product availability than brick-and-mortar stores. So it's easier to find unique items online. On top of that, you've got the simple fact that online stores are accessible 24/7 and offer fast shipping. Oh, and there are the (often) convenient return policies to consider.
"Moreover, the availability of various digital payment methods and frequent special offers like those seen on Black Friday and Cyber Monday contribute to its popularity." It’s clear that there are plenty of reasons why online shopping is so appealing to so many people, not just in the US but all around the globe.

I Ordered A Cupcake Bouquet For Mother’s Day From A Local Bakery. The Photo Examples She Posted To Instagram vs. What Was Delivered
This reminds me of all those bored people who took up baking as a hobby during the pandemic and actually tried to start home businesses selling their poor attempts at trying to bake. Speaking from experience being on the receiving end of such a terrible batch of cupcakes. Just to be nice and help out I ordered a batch was a friend’s SIL instead of a professional bakery. It was to be delivered to a cousin as a birthday gift. The SIL actually had a whole Instagram page with a custom name dedicated to her baking which she just started during the pandemic. In the end the decorations weren’t what I asked for and the cousin who I sent them to never once commented on how they tasted. Total waste of money and a good lesson learnt for me to never trust such make-believe pandemic-born bakers, etc. (After about a year of the baking hobby this friend’s SIL switched to a homemade baby clothes and adult frocks business which also died off after about a year.)
Yes... give into the cupcake anger. Frosting leads to cupcake anger, cupcake anger leads to bake and bake? Bake leads to stuffing (yourself)

I think this could be a small-claims case of false-advertising ... IF what is being posted to Instagram was represented as the products she produces. If it's simply on the Instagram page, the proprietor can claim it was never intended as a representation of their own product ... even though, yes, it's definitely sketchy and unethical.

Load More Replies...Marketing psychology speaker Johnson confirmed that scams are a big issue for e-commerce platforms and online shops alike. However, just because the problem is well-known doesn't mean that it's easy to tackle.
“The biggest and most difficult step that e-commerce platforms can take here is to have a better vetting process over their sellers. Put simply, there needs to be stricter verification processes for sellers and products, ensuring that only legitimate businesses and authentic items are allowed on platforms," the expert shared with Bored Panda.
"Enhanced transparency regarding product information, pricing, and seller details would help customers make informed decisions and identify potential scams more easily. This is difficult in practice, however, as this requires a lot of Quality Assurance oversight, which is difficult to effectively manage," he noted.
"E-commerce marketplaces are also incentivized to provide as many options as possible to their consumers, which often leads them to cut corners, or to look the other way when it comes to the quality and trustworthiness of these sellers."

Not Quite What You Bargained On Getting
$2 at Shein? People really need to understand that there is a relation between a product and its price. This price includes raw materials, process to produce usable material, manufacturing the end product, selling it, delivering it, transportation between the various stages - and every stage includes costs for machinery, energy and people. Sometimes also a heavy "hey look, something from a fancy brand"-fee is included. The thing on the right hand is what you get for $2, but of course no one would buy it when advertised like this.

Our Company Now Has 900 Of These Pens
They might have been refunded and were told just to keep them.
Load More Replies...Having worked for a time in advertising publishing I always wonder - "Didn't they send / get sign off on a proof?" In the USA anyway that is fairly standard practice to avoid things like this. It also protects the publisher. A few times - some customer mad about a "mistake" and then you show them the proof with their signature on it saying everything is exactly how they want it.
I've had things made through two online promotional companies and in all instances the communication was clear, they provided proofs and in a couple situations a sample of the product before they began the production run. Real companies make the extra effort to avoid situations like this.
The company that made the pens should be paying your company for their free advertising!
Shouldn’t have tried to save a few bucks by using an online, self service company. Going through a proper ASI distributor makes all the difference.
Globally, e-commerce is a $6 trillion industry. Statista notes that how goods are bought and sold has significantly changed with the rise and spread of the internet. There are around 5 billion internet users on planet Earth, and this number is only going to grow. Naturally, online shopping will likely grow as well, as more people get access to the internet.
With the number of online shoppers only set to rise, this creates a lot of new opportunities for scammers, swindlers, and charlatans to trick them out of their hard-earned cash. The unfortunate reality is that far from everyone knows how to use the internet or shop online in a safe way.
Some folks simply haven’t had negative experiences with potential fraudsters yet. Others might be a bit naive. Still, others are feeling emotionally vulnerable, so they’re more easily manipulated. This is why getting educated about the types of scams that are out there and knowing how to stay calm under stress are so important.

Load More Replies...I guess when you support slave labour by ordering from these websites, you can't expect much.
And you don't support it when buying from importers?
Load More Replies...However, this won’t make you invulnerable to getting scammed. No matter how up-to-date we all are, scammers will always come up with new ways to trick folks. The fight against scams is a never-ending one.
The fact of the matter is that every one of us can become the victim of a scam. No matter how intelligent, well-off, or experienced you might be, thinking that “it would never happen to me” is the wrong way to go about things. You need to stay vigilant when you can.
You need to consider that someone might try to take advantage of you with fancy promises. Especially if you’re going through a period of time when you’re vulnerable or feeling lost. This doesn’t mean mistrusting everyone you meet, but all of us could stand to be slightly more careful where money is involved. Especially if someone on the internet is promising to fulfill our deepest desires for very little payment.

My Friend Ordered Siddhartha, A Novel About Buddhist Enlightenment, From Amazon And It Was Misprinted With A Red Pill Self-Help Guide Called "The Unplugged Alpha"
It's for when you're too embarrassed to have The Unplugged Alpha on your bookshelf.
This is really a blast from the past for me! Had to read that book in German for my German classes. One of the twenty books in German I had to read that year. Looking back at it now, I was probably too young to appreciate the book fully (17 years).

Bought several copies of a self-help Books’s gifts for people I knew who wanted them. One of them was a porn on the inside. Didn’t know it until it was too late.
Before you go buying up every awesome deal you come across on the internet, take some time to do at least some background research. Read the description of the product in full. Pay attention to the dimensions of the product, the shipping costs and time, as well as how the seller phrases everything.
Don’t give in to flowery language about how the product is the best thing ever and how you’d be lucky to get it because there’s not much left in stock.
Scammers and swindlers try to create situations that force you to make rash and impulsive decisions. If there’s a ticking clock scenario, the odds are that it’s useful for someone… That ‘someone’ most likely is not you. In these situations, make yourself pause for a little while. Take a deep breath, take a step back, and think about what you’re getting into.
This Company Absolutely Butchered Our Pen Order Instead Of Following The Instructions In Our Conversation, They Just Printed The Instructions Right On The Pens
Did I mention I have a hundred of these?
I don't know... normally I'd agree with you, but this time he does say "instead of following instructions in our conversation" as if they've had an email conversation or something.
Load More Replies...What’s weird is they claimed to have had a conversation so that should have eliminated any ambiguity. I order pens for our business all the time. I get sent a box of examples and have to sign off on it before they charge, print & ship. Even with our old pen company did I have to sign off. They made an error once so we simply didn’t approve the order or pay them & they never shipped the error pens. So what is it with so many companies this problem?
This. I'd use them anyway because of it. The URL is on the pen, and people are more likely to remember this over one that's perfect.
Load More Replies...Ah, so you work for MyProfessionals?! So tell the professed professionals at MyProfessionals to put in some professionalism into their profession.ca
This one is on you, OP. Just add the .ca to the image yourself. It's not that hard. These things are run through automation with limited manual checks in place. If you have such a special order, you absolutely have to call that in. And had they seen it and "got it right" it still wouldn't look good given how the image and the text gets displayed. That would take an actual designer to be involved in.
They should use these anyways, how many people are going to snap a pic and post it online and give them free advertising? 😁
My Uber Driver's Picture. He Didn't Even Say Sorry
I really enjoy rating my order, if subjected to something really bad. They deserve to be shamed.
Smaller Than Expected
The pens etc in the top right are to scale, more-or-less. Bizarre pic. Still, it's what you can expect to happen when you don't include a banana.
I thought something didn’t add up there! I was thinking “hang on, the pens would fit fine it’s the phone is that size”. Okay, so they have just added a mini phone to the first picture?
Load More Replies...There's some weird photoshopping going on because in the top right there's a bottle of Liquid Paper and two glue sticks that clearly show the true size of the unit, but next to the phone you can see a bottle of Liquid Paper and a glue stick at a completely different scale. That is deliberately scammery
I work at a thrift store and I see these come through all the time... Not only are they fairly small but they also are really flimsy.
Doesn't seem that wrong to me, the problem is if you don't think about the sizes of the displayed items. It's honest though, except maybe the mini cell phone.
Many of the items on the top right compartments - the white out, the business cards, glue sticks, and green and brown markers - are also in the pencil holder next to the phone. They are not, however, the same size.
Load More Replies...With so many online marketplaces offering good sales throughout the year, there are often very few cases where there’s a genuine fear of missing out. It’s okay to say ‘no’ or to give yourself room to think. In the worst-case scenario, you can always grab the deal next time.
But don’t just listen to your logical and overly-rational voice of reason. Check in with your gut, too. If your instincts are screaming at you that something feels off, it’s best to listen to them. In our experience, our gut is right more often than not.

What I Ordered vs. What I Got
Needless to say, avoid the company Heroxce AT ALL COSTS. Total scammers. Won’t return or give your money back. Buyer, beware.
Seriously, any online store with a weird name that you have never heard of that pops up on your socials, with too good to be true prices, you should be IMMEDIATELY suspicious of. It’s likely a scammy place that is folding and reinventing itself every 3 months, ensuring no one gets their money back and they never accumulate enough bad reviews for anyone to notice.
Plus you know, all the slave labour. Nothing can be that cheap without someone being exploited!!
Load More Replies...Company certainly should have refunded, but that looks they sent someone else's order in error, or a randomly selected substitute for an out of stock dress (like the stories of crazy substitutions in online grocery orders): it doesn't look like any kind of attempt at the dress in the first picture at all (and although it's hard to tell without seeing it on, it looks wearable enough, just not even close to the correct item).
Last year I ordered a "peacock" clock for my kitchen wall. There were two similar clocks on the website, one significantly more expensive than the other. I ordered the more flamboyant one ( more expensive) and I somehow just knew that it was the wrong one, even before I opened the parcel. I was right. It took 4 emails with photos of what I ordered v what I got, plus detailed description of why they were different. They tried to give me the runaround but In the end they capitulated and I got a full refund. (By the way, Amazon wouldn't help me so I had to go straight to the seller) I then sent 3 emails requesting a returns label and address to return the clock. They were ignored, so now I have an almost identical clock ( to the one I wanted) free of charge Moral of the story, don't take no for an answer. Be persistent and go straight for the jugular.

The seller’s history and reputation can tell you a lot about how (un)trustworthy they are. Don’t feel bad about checking out their profile and the reviews they’ve gotten from other customers. Though star ratings and comments won’t give you a nuanced picture, they can be good for a general overview of what the seller is like. You’ll also get to grips with how they solve problems with products if they do pop up.

I avoid Amazon since 10+ years now, never used another big shipper, and use national, well established webshops. Works excellent, might be a tad more expensive sometimes, but dead reliable. The electronics shop I order all my stuff from offer "second chance"-items, which have been returned. Sometimes unpacked, but all checked. And I don't care if the huge fancy freezer has a scratch and dent if it comes with 20% off. It will get scratches and dents anyway, in the garage.
I read an article on this happening to customers a couple months ago. Pieces of metal were in the box to give it the weight, w/o the laptop.
Meanwhile, if you’re buying from a random website or marketplace, dig into the history of the company a little bit. Try to figure out where their headquarters are located. Check out whether they actually make the products they’re selling or if they’re simply an intermediary that’s reselling cheap stuff at a premium.

As someone struggling to sell woodworking items online, when ever I see something as blatantly wrong as this it makes me furious. It gives online shopping a bad name. I don't sell crafts online (I wish I was that talented) but I do buy a lot. But I've noticed that sites that were intended for crafts (Etsy, etc) are just flooded with c**p like this, and it infuriates me because there are people out there with genuine talent, and instead the search results are flooded with the same mass produced c**p you'll find on sites like Shein. You've got to be much more careful and thorough with searching for what you want these days :/

1-800-flowers determines the designs. Local florists who pay for the association can do the designs based on having the flower stock. They also buy accessories for the design catalogue. Or, they’re supposed to. That doesn’t mean they have the items in stock nor have any skill set on making said designs. They often wing it and as long as they have the flower count or general idea, that’s what ya get & what the fine print says.

This has happened to me several times, ordering one item and having multiples delivered with some 'delayed.' The delayed one sometimes shows up and sometimes it mysteriously melts away.
No, it wasn't because he didn't order them, it's because he only has three wheels for his car

Oh my gosh dude I'm so sorry I just copied your comment without even looking!!
Load More Replies...I work in a receiving department and when this happens, it's usually the box with the packing list. It's so infuriating.
This happens to my SIL. He'll order one of something and get three or more and then get a refund.
OMG, a package is a day late. You should call the consumer advocate at your local TV station.
What I Ordered vs. What I Got
To keep it short, I was specifically looking for a Goldendoodle holiday figurine for my mother-in-law. At the time, there were no reviews on this and it was $30 so I took a risk. It didn’t pay off this time… I at least thought it would be 3D.
I would be a bit upset if it wasn’t so funny. I think I’m going to keep him and put him outside.
"At the time" - might not have been rated when they ordered.

Your quest has just begun. The quest to get the item you actually ordered.
And that will lead you to another clue. And another...
Load More Replies...amazon says they have over 1 million errors a day in packages sent in the US, because of the volume they handle. You just get it corrected
It's not about the volume they handle, it's about scammers selling on the site. There was absolutely tons of them during the PS5 release, when people were desperate to get hold of the hard to acquire ps5's, scammers on amazon were selling PS5's for marked up prices, only for it to be the PS5 box with a brick or something inside of it.
Load More Replies...Somebody who ordered $10 worth of plastic cutlery got themselves a hell of a good deal.
It looks like the shipping label got applied to the wrong box. It happens all the time. It's typically operator error, not the equipments fault.
So I actually ordered a box of plastic silverware several months ago and it never came...
How do you prove/ convince them that you were scammed? My luck I'd be stuck with cutlery and out $500
I ordered a kitchen ricer once and got a child's athletic outfit. They did take it back, but I had to fight them on their chat line.
At Least It's The Same Fabric?
If by 'the same fabric' you mean 'totally different fabrics' then yeah.
Ordered New Vans, Received Someone's Smelly Old Reeboks
Delivery driver: "Lemme just.. ah, new shoes. Wait, what am i gonna do with my old ones?" *slips back into box* "Nobody's gonna know"
More likely somebody on the supply side did something like that, then the picker unknowingly just took the box off the shelf.
Load More Replies...Could've been an accident. Most orders are sent directly from stores, and it's possible a s****y customer slipped old shoes into the new shoes box, and when it was taken off the shelf to be shipped, nobody checked inside.
How nice! You bought some nice person in the warehouse a new pair of Vans.
This was COMMON when I worked in the shoe dept of a kohls. People steal shoes and replace them.
reminds me when I got new steel toed boots at my warehouse, at end of shift. went to the break room to slip them right on and toss the old ones, because I didn´t want to bother carrying the big shoe box on the bus. A truck driver was there, too (the break room was public, not employee only) was there, too and asked me to give him the old ones. I just shrugged and did.
I ordered a set of car speakers thru Amazon. The box was legit. Not the speakers inside. They were rated for less than half the wattage & from cheap, Chinese named company.
So I Bought A Spider-Man Mask On eBay, And Here's What I Got
Well if it's any consolation, some spiders (like the mouse spider) do have fat heads. Be proud of what mama eBay gave you!
Ordered A Filter For My Camera And They Sent It In A Mailer Envelope
The coffy filter they ship in a box with bubble wrap.
Load More Replies...Good filters have cases that would protect them. The lack of that makes me quite suspicious of the quality of the product.
Mistakes Were Made
I'd make it into an Xmas ornament. Or a keychain for someone I hate lol
My Mum Ordered A Gin Glass For My Dad For His Birthday. She Wanted It To Say "Celtic" In The Middle Of The Glass, But She Got This Instead
Pity she didn't ask for a personalised glass for her husband Malcolm
clearly the person in charge of customizing your glass was a rangers fan...
The Etsy Shop Nailed It With Our Notes
it's when your daughter is actually a doughnut
Load More Replies...I don't know why you'd put that in the notes to seller anyway. They don't care why you're buying it!
Didn't work out for his son either. All work and no play made Jack a dough boy.

Best Buy has the worst return policy and they have quality issues all the time. I refuse to shop there anymore.
I haven't been in one, or on their website in at least a decade. Here, they are the most expensive place in town.
Load More Replies...OP thought they were buying a 55 - 250 mm camera lens, only to open the box and find out it was a cheaper 18 - 55 mm camera lens. Somebody swapped out the lens before OP bought it, and from the caption it seems OP may not have found out in time to be able to return it.

I used to buy refurbished. Not anymore. I ordered a refurb laptop for my daughter for Christmas. Lone delay & it finally arrived on Christmas Eve. I pull the box out of the box & it has a big orange sticker on the box "Inoperable". I open it up & sure enough, it has damage to the case & the screen is shattered. I was highly ticked. Now the vendor gave me a hassle that it must have been damaged enroute. That sticker did not mean anything they said. They finally allowed me to do a return & sent a working one after I left a terrible review. In my review I said it be a long time before I do business with them again. I planned on 2 years but it was closer to 5 years before I used that vendor again.
Don't Canon/Nikon come with 18-55mm? Looks like someone swapped their standard for a zoom, personally I'd have gone for an 18-300mm but there you go.
I haven't shopped at Best Buy in years. In my experience, their prices are always far higher than other places.
I haven't had too many problems with BB , but I agree you should check your purchase soon after getting it so that problems can be corrected quickly. This goes for any expensive purchase, really.
Many years ago, I received a deal for a free 35 mm. camera. This was before Iphones and I liked taking pictures so I thought, why not, if it sucks, I didn't pay for it. ABout a week later, my camera showed up and it was a nice off brand 35mm camera. I was surprised but happy. Every day after that, for weeks, I got a new camera. I gave them away as christmas gifts and that year, everyone I knew thought I had gone way overboard on spending. Never said a word.
These are reasons I prefer to shop at brick-and-mortar stores. First, what you see is what you get - you know the size, dimensions, etc. right away. Second, you get your stuff immediately instead of having to wait. Third, no worries about your merchandise being damaged or stolen in transit. I'm sure there are more advantages.
Not always! My mom and I bought a vacuum at Walmart. When we got it home and opened it, clearly someone had bought it, put their old vacuum in the box, and returned it. The vacuum was full of dust and trash. Walmart obviously switched it out for us, but brick and mortar doesn't always mean the product is in working condition/new.
