I Used AI To Find Out What These 33 Historical And Mythical Figures Would Look Like If They Were Modern Everyday People (New Pics)
The patina of history shrouds many famous personalities and mythical figures in mystery. The distance of time and the mastership of the artists make all of them look like, well, gods or demigods. Comparing yourself to them may be daunting, and you rarely think of them as regular people with normal needs. But they are, and I wanted to show you this. But how else could I do it if not with the help of artificial intelligence, which is pretty accessible these days, and it produces wonderful results.
It's not the first time I've done this, and you may check out the previous post and see how I progressed since the last time. And without further ado, let's me show you what I've done this time. I think it really proves that they could be any one of us, and us—any one of them. I hope this inspires you to do great things today. Enjoy!

The recreations of the photographer and digital artist Bas Uterwijk (I, II, III) made me create this series in the first place. Obviously, he's a master of the medium, and I started by trying to learn more from him and emulate his style. I was very glad to receive some positive feedback from him the last time I talked with him! I would also like to mention Nathan Shipley's works (I, II), which also influenced me greatly.
Fayum Mummy Portrait
With the green suit he kinda looks like he’s participating in squid game
Load More Replies...Apollo
Eerily close, this one. To the point I gotta ask, sir, might you... be an Ancient Sun God?
I dunno... the statue's upper lip is thinner and the brows are different
Load More Replies...perhaps it is edward's long lost twin brother???🤔
Load More Replies...This one isn't really close for me because the jaw line is so different on the photo. The top half of the face got it, but the jaw on the photo is much more chiseled.
The cheekbones on the right are more prominent, so is the upper lip...
Load More Replies...yeah, or more golden brown at least, with blond highlights "God of the Sun"
Load More Replies...OMG, handsome to the Stars and back, Apollo, Sorry I'm an awww struck wife 😍🙏🙏
why did i just get gender dysphoria from looking at this... please help lol
When choosing the character, the most time-consuming thing is to find an image that resembles the historical figure. I spend hours in image databases and do research about how the historical personalities looked until I get the right picture. The time it takes greatly depends on the piece, but each individual recreation takes up to 2 hours, which is nothing compared to AI-unassisted methods that may take from days to months.
Hatsheput, Pharaoh
The headline says "...if they were modern regular people" - it is not about coming as close to the portrait as possible or matching the look of the time; the AIs show how that person might look today.
Load More Replies...Her mummy was actually found: bit on the chubby side, actually. I.e., the statue was idealized.
Madame De Pompadour
It's hard to imagine all these grand portraits as actual humans. The portraits very often look so different from one another that it's hard to guess what they really looked like. These photos really make them human for me. She looks like someone you'd meet for coffee.
I'm disappointed the modern recreation doesn't have a pompadour hair style, which is simply brushing the hair back with no part.
Which Doctor Who companion do you refer to
Load More Replies...FIRST TIME I HEARD OF HER WAS FROM DR. WHO!!!! SHE WAS A VERY INFLUENTIAL PERSON.
I believe that these legendary and historical personalities were really special, no matter how common and mundane the AI makes them look. No matter how regular they might look, we will always have in mind that they've a made a name for themselves in history, and the surrounding aura of their historical significance never really fades, unless it's completely forgotten. This time I'm more happy with my works than the previous, and I can really feel the progress from the last time.
Leonardo Da Vinci
Ole Genius had a trim lately I see! Now rockin' a 'stache, too! Frankly, I think this guy could play him in a Da Vinci movie!
It’s a computer generated image, not an actual person…
Load More Replies...I would love to see the photo mirroring the expression. It's difficult to see how similar it is when the expressions and angles are different.
Saint Joseph
I mean... except for the fact that Joseph wasn't a white dude. It's close to the art, I guess.
I mean to be fair the AI is trained to generate an image from the art, not to actually understand what the person might have looked like if the art is inaccurate. The art depicts him as a white guy, so whether he was or not the AI is going to generate a white guy.
Load More Replies...never ceases to make me raise one eyebrow to see Christian white-washing of the ethnicity of middle-eastern people
Most of these renaissance portraits of religious figures were comissioned by a prominent family who said, "make him look like my nephew Bob."
Load More Replies...To be fair, the AI is generating what it sees. Whoever made that art drew a white guy, and although the art might not be accurate the AI can't tell that, it sees a white guy so it's going to generate a white guy.
Load More Replies...The AI can't tell that based on the art. Whoever made that portrait drew him as a white guy, and the AI is designed to generate an image from art, not generate what that historical figure actually looked like. Basically, if the AI sees a picture of a white guy it's going to generate a picture of a white guy, whether the person in the art was actually a white guy or not.
Load More Replies...The pictures are close, but Middle Eastern people were darker skinned. At least he doesn't have blue eyes.
That's the fault of whoever made the portrait though, the AI can't tell that he's not actually a white guy because in the portrait he's drawn as a white guy and that's all it has to go off of.

Lucifer
The statue has that "I left my stove on" look eternally etched on its face. Perhaps this is the real meaning of eternal damnation, lol.
No no no, Luci is a tall dark and handsome British man with sex appeal that is "otherworldly" and a knack for solving crimes. Duh.
Fun fact: The statue of Lucifer on the left was not the first one that the church who owned it commissioned. The first one was deemed too handsome and buff, so they rejected it and asked his brother to make one instead (which is the one pictured on the left). A lot of people think that the second statue was even buffer and sexier than the first, and think the church just gave up and accepted it.
I once had a discussion with my pastor about what lucifer looked like, he said this "If you walked into a party, he would would look like what is most tempting to you, he would be the most interesting person to you"
Isaac Newton
Joan Of Arc
She's very beautiful. The lips are more defined in the statue, but very similar in shape, and the face shape is spot on to me as well.
Queen Nefertiti
Well the model is looking down while the bust is looking up .. it would look very good if she tilted her chin up... would elongate her neck and cause the shadows to fall just right along her nose
I feel like the angle is why it doesn't look right. If both had the same angle, I think it would look perfect
Load More Replies...Everything about this rendition is wrong: the shape and tilt of the eyes, the tip of the nose, the shape of the mouth/lips, the jaw, the neck.... Ok. The ears are ok. Actually, they're really not!
Nope. I would never match the AI version to the jwoman depicted by the statue.
Checkbones and chin are very different this time, others are closer to the artwork.
Except she wasn't black, you are looking at a highly oxidized paint version of her. We have descriptions of her which place her as looking what we today would consider Greek looking (which was how Northern Pharonic peoples looked) and may have been half Mitani. She forsure was not black
Nefertiti was not negro. Like all ancient egyptians, she was Mediterranean
Zeus
Looks like Zach Galifianakis. Or is it the other way around? Also looks a little bit stoned. Reminds of the lyrics "God of Thunder, and Rock and Roll." I also love that AI beard hair glitch. It looks like lightning bolts, which fits the character.
he looks like rett from good mythical morning
Load More Replies...Imagine how many more he would have slept with if he had this appearance!! Greek mythology would be huge!!!
Zeus is from Greek mythology, so I’d say the complexion is off. You’ve made him a white dude!
Greeks are white! However he looks Scandinavian to me and way too young!
Load More Replies...Caligula
If his hair was blonde he’d look like that assshole kid from Game of Thrones that was king for a bit.
Turin's Holy Shroud
He looks appropriate for the role. A Jewish dude who came back from the dead! I'd be a little wide-eyed too!
Except the Turin Shroud was actually made in Italy during the Middle Age and the face on it is supposedly of some Italian guy.
Load More Replies...except the shroud is generally considered to be a forgery by most reputable scholar and experts and carbon dating supports it being fake
But imaging what the person (whose face is imprinted on the shroud) could look like, has nothing to do with the shroud being real or fake...
Load More Replies...I think the shroud depicts a wider face, but this looks far closer than most of the blonde haired blue eyed renditions !
I've never noticed how much the shroud looks like the Ancient knight in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom!
Okay...but the shroud has been proven to be fake more than once. This I'd what I picture Jesus looking like though.
https://www.catholicpilgrimageph.com/venice-exhibits-3d-model-of-jesus-christ-based-on-the-shroud-of-turin/
take a look: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4RBXVs70_g shroud-Jes...368209.jpg
Statue Of Liberty
I kinda see Mariska Hargitay...back when she was on L&O:SVU and had that short haircut. But other than that I dont see how the AI got this picture out of the statue of Liberty...
Nope. Look at photos of Elvis! Other sites too. https://cheezburger.com/5012880896/tll-classics-the-statue-of-liberty-totally-looks-like-elvis-presley
Well, hair is because it is a.modern version of her.
Load More Replies...Wasn't she (the Statue of Liberty) modelled after the artist's mother and girlfriend? I'm hoping I'm wrong.
Creator Frederic Auguste Bartholdi used an Arab woman as the model (he originally wanted to put it by the Suez Canal). https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-factcheck-statue-liberty-design/fact-check-inspiration-behind-original-statue-of-liberty-design-idUSKBN24B2L1 But according to the National Park Service, he DID use his mother's face. https://www.nps.gov/stli/planyourvisit/get-the-facts.htm
Load More Replies...Some believe that his brother, the mute and mentally ill Jean-Charles was used as the "model". https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3671330/Is-Lady-Liberty-actually-MAN-Statue-s-face-modeled-sculptor-Fr-d-ric-Auguste-Bartholdi-s-mentally-ill-brother.html
They had a photo of the (Statue of Liberty's)grand niece, years ago - SHE was much more similar looking.
Saladin, Sultan Of Egypt And Syria
Just want to note that if Saladin on the left rocked that turban in modern times, it would put most modern celebrities to shame.
It would be difficult to match that chronically worried look: always expecting poison with his next sip of pommegranate juice.
Saladin was especially threatened by the Hashishin Sect. They had a reputation of being magically stealth, efficent and deadly, so Saladin was worried and would set all kind of protections and traps in his tent to prevent them from reaching and killing him in his sleep. One day he had spread flour all around his bed just before going to sleep. He still found a dagger stuck in his pillow with a warning message, and there was no visible footprint all around.
Load More Replies...He should have a frown or something. That would make it more similar.
eyes a little closer togethet, nose narrower as well as a bit crooked to his left. please understand, these are only personal observations after the fact ... i could never do what you have accomplished!
Johan Sebastian Bach
Oh my, this one is simply TOO close! I'd believe in this one, no trouble!
I think the nose and mouth are both off in this one. This AI seems to do a lot better with the top half than the bottom half of the face.
Load More Replies...Very close. I was at the consecration of an Episcopal bishop once where one of the bishops in attendance looked eerily like JSB also.
Isabel, Princess Imperial Of Brazil
Signed the law for the liberation of slaves in Brazil.
Setting slaves free is always a good thing. Trick is to make sure that freedom offers them more opportunity than just the freedom to wallow in poverty!
Well said Jonny, I agree, too bad we can't turn the clock back, also, I wish some people would read the history, and what the government did, horrific !!!
Load More Replies...there is already a picture of her how she really looks. what is this comparison for ?!?!?
I guess it's to show what she looks like in color
Load More Replies...I don't think this one is very close. The nose and face shape aren't all that close IMO.
This example proves that AI is mostly rubbish and the results of the experiments should be taken with a pinch of salt. AI doesn't interpret anything "intelligently", because in this example, it changes all the parts that don't need changing at all. As a result the final picture is clearly less like the real person than the original picture, which was entirely accurate (as far as photography ever is). The colour picture could perhaps pass for Isabel's relation - daughter or granddaughter perhaps - but she clearly isn't Isabel herself.
Christina Of Denmark
I met someone who looked like that in fact I’m pretty sure I’m thinking of my preschool teacher Mrs.Shaw who was a great woman, lived to be 41, also had a 2 daughters named Willimina who got married and new last name is Downy, and Nora who is still probably about 15 or 16
Aphrodite
For this one, I'll concede that it's hard to find a woman who properly resembles this statue. Lovely as the model is, she simply is not as round-faced as the statue, hers is more of an angular-featured beauty! Also she still (thankfully!) has her nose :P
I feel like the bust has a more ‘drew* barrymore’ shaped face then the ‘heart’ shaped face done here
Ludwig Van Beethoven
"You look like Beethoven." "What?'' "You LOOK like BEETHOVEN!" "WHAT?" "NEVER MIND!!!"
He had many good years of composing in his 30s. Why must be be portrayed in his 50s?
Load More Replies...holy s**t that looks like robert... i wanna say pattinson? edward cullen? cedric diggory? that guy
I think John Belushi did a skit on SNL as Beethoven. The AI version looks like he could be Belushi's son or grandson...
Yes he did it was classic! Belushi was a comic genius
Load More Replies...Who knew Beethoven was a dead ringer for Robert Pattinson in his younger days
Antonio Vivaldi
Frederic Chopin
There are photos of him actually. The recreation us not that accurate. The painting is.
In trying to confirm this, I looked up the photos of Chopin. According to the sources I found, one of the photos is not very legible, and the one that is was taken during a time that his face was swollen from illness. I found a very cool painting that was made by an artist who used Chopin's death mask. That painting looks a lot like the rendered image here.
Load More Replies...Ugh. This dude ruined my fifth grade piano recital. Well... I mean... I ruined it by not practicing. But I've never forgiven Chopin, anyway. LOL
I don't think the photo is all that close; the nose is different and is it just me, or is the eye color different too?
Katherine Swynford
Or... was Dracula sporting that casual Swynford look? At least, the movie version of Dracula :P
Load More Replies...That was a weird trend they had. They would pluck the hair from their hairline to create huge foreheads. Fashion…
Well, what seems okay now they might find it weird in the future! Example: Kardashians (they are weird even now)
Load More Replies...The painting must have been done when she was elderly. She was supposedly quite beautiful when young.
Mary Shelley
Close. .But, the very dark brown (almost black!) eyes somehow, mysteriously, turned light blue! 🤨
She looks like my English teacher (Mrs.Odea) (also my all day teacher we don’t do much English)
Mary, Queen Of Scots
She looks like she's about to give you the worst advice in the history of advice.
Load More Replies...You did Mary dirty. She did not have to have that expression. Or that lip color on a ginger. Yikes!
While there is a resemblance the art and the AI give off a completely different vibe - like, Mary the art is thinking about decisions that could lead to war and the end of her kingdom, whereas Mary the AI is judging people for buying the wrong brand of baby food....
Costanza Bonarelli, Noblewoman, Merchant And Art Dealer
The face is too wide. And I’d like to see them in the original clothing, hair style, etc.
I think I know which AI they were using (looks like Artbreeder to me), and, if I'm right, that's not an option they have :(
Load More Replies...The statue bottom lip looks bee stung. Or like someone is mooning us from her mouth.
I know she means well, but can’t other people at the PTA meetings get a chance to talk?!
Miss Edith Corse Evans
She was one of 4 first-class women to die on the Titanic, her body never found.
Okay, this is just comparing two photographs of totally different women. I can see the resemblance, though - maybe they were related?
except for these arent models, but ai, where they were recreating the photos, so they can't have been related haha. but i agree with you!
Load More Replies...I think this could definitely be the same woman, if she had been exposed to modern beauty standards. Thinner, some filler in the lips, too much makeup and self-hatred and deadness in the eyes because no one ever told her that humans are beautiful just the way they are.
In the picture, Edith looks like she carries a whole potatoe in her mouth, maybe to achieve a certain look that was idealized in her time - I think the resemblance would be higher if she looked a bit more relaxed...
Load More Replies...It is difficult to reproduce the purposeful expression seen in the original.
You folks are not getting that these are INTERPRETATIONS. They are nothing besides AI comparisons. Unreal.
Michelangelo's David
That statue is so big! I thought it was regular person sized until very recently, and boy was I wrong!
There's a recreation of it at the Ringling Museum in Sarasota, FL and my family used to go on Sundays because it was free for local residents. I remember looking up at the penis many, many times in that courtyard 🤣
Load More Replies...This one seems the MOST off, out of all. AI got the face too narrow, the eyebrows and nose are all wrong. David has a strong chin, but doesn’t have a cleft in it like AI image. Of all the ones to get wrong…!
No, sorry, I don't see any resemblance at all. However, if Michelangelo met the guy on the right today maybe he would chose him as model for a new David - who knows?
In the contributor's defence, he did say "what they Would Look Like If They Were Modern Everyday People". So David might have layed off the porchetta panini if he'd been a real person living today and thus have a less chubby face. I think we need to see this real life copy naked to really compare seriously 😜.
The recreation doesn't look remotely like the statue at all. Where's all the baby fat? Why is the face and lips a completely different shape? Really, isn't this just some random dude's pic next to the statue's pic?
Livia Drusilla
She's a little too lean to be the full-fleshed figure in the statue TBH! Mouth just a little too wide, too... but her eyes and hair are close enough. Also she herself is VERY beautiful!
I feel that the AI uses pictures of celebrities and they all tend to be too skinny
Load More Replies...If they hadn't named the bust statue, I would have thought it was a male. With that said the AI to me looks nothing like the bust!!
Cleopatra
I think there has been a mistake, the original looks more like Marc Antony.
No, that first statue is her. It looks a little strange head on though; it’s a bit more feminine in profile.
Load More Replies...I've seen several recreations of her and none look alike. Apparently she wasn't a beautiful woman but had a strong character and was very attractive.
She was from the family of Ptolemy but who knows what she really looked like. It's important to remember that a lot of these images were stylized to improve the image.
Load More Replies...The angle of this photo of the statue makes it appear less feminine, mainly how the hair is viewed. Try looking at it from a different angle. https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cleopatra_VII,_dalla_via_appia_tra_ariccia_e_genzano,_40-30_ac_ca._02.JPG#mw-jump-to-license
face should be triangular, forehead and upper cheeks wider, chin shorter, jawline narrower.
"The Sacred Heart Of Mary"
Except she definitely didn’t really look like that, being from the Middle East and all
It's hilarious how people especially yanks think people in the middle East look. I have arab family from Syria with fair skin and blue eyes but in American movies middle Eastern people are played by people from the Indian sub continent. King David from the bible was supposed to have red hair. Afgans are sometimes natural blonde, I know Iranians paler than Italians. You really need to get out and see the world more
Load More Replies...Since we don't know exactly what she looked like, I think this was meant to look like the rendition, not a historical figure. If the hair were covered, she'd look very similar to the statue in some ways.
I am trying to imagine the comments if the AI looked like people here are thinking that Mary must have looked like next to this statue - they would be breathing fire because "no similarity at all"...
Load More Replies...I’m tired too. I’m stressed too. Have you once asked me how my day was? No. No you didn’t. Make the kids dinner I’m taking a bath.
Pretty sure this is just meant to show this particular statue as a real person. Everyone take it easy.
AI shows her as a mature woman. She was in her early teens when her first son was born.
Lady Of Elche
Imagine the model carrying an extra 25 pandemic pounds. The structure is there; the extra meat isn't.
Load More Replies...She’s really pretty, I can imagine her being on the cover of a magazine
The statue looks like Caitlyn Jenner. Cheeks on the woman are too hollow.
Hidreley! sorry there are so many people hating on your stuff!! I think what you do is awesome!
Same here, great job. I think some people think their opinion is worth nothing unless it's negative.
Load More Replies...I must admit, I loved this post and seeing the recreations is fun! Also almost all of them are really sexy! In my opinion it doesn't mean that you haven't been precise in the making but that with a little care and makeup anyone can have a great appearance!
They went a bit overboard on the black Egyptians. Ruling Egyptians of those time periods look much like the Egyptians of today, so says multiple studies of the DNA. I think every time we deliberately misrepresent this fact we devalue when the Nubians actually controlled Egypt
I thought these were really interesting. It brings art and history to life for modern eyes. It's easier to put yourself in their shoes and imagine what they may have went through. People have to realize too that a lot of these statues were stylized. We can't know what they really look like but based on the art and the AI this is the closest they have...Great Job Hidrėlėy
Hidreley, I only commented on the ones I thought didn't fit. Know that all the ones without a comment from me were awesome!
I commend the skill involved, but I think most of these don’t express the “feeling” of the person, not to mention the facial features and bone structure. Having said that, I work in Photoshop and can only imagine how extremely hard and time consuming this must be.
Zues and Aphrodite are perfect w cgi. Very realistic. Caligula looks exactly how you'd think he'd be. Lol
Apollo and Joseph are gorgeous and so is every woman on here. Cleopatra extraordinary
Load More Replies...I think these are great! A great selection of interesting figures from history and weirdly accurate to what historians believe! The exception is the two ancient Egyptian queens Nefertiti and Hatshepsut. Ancient Egyptians were a Mediteranean people like the Italians and Greeks. They were not sub-saharan dark skinned people. So a more accurate likeness would be something like Alyssa Milano or Lady Gaga. (Cleopatra was actually Greek and her picture was great.) But other than those two, spot on! These were so much fun to look at.
