The US Senate Just Voted To Make Daylight Saving Time Permanent In 2023, And Here Are 30 Of People’s Best Reactions
Changing the clock two times a year is a headache for most people, especially when going into daylight saving time or summer time, because we turn the arrow forward and that means we lose an hour of sleep that night. Not only that, many complain that they struggle to adapt to the new time in the following days or weeks.
Surveys show that the majority of people would like the time change to stop and it seems that it is a possibility in the US, where a bill was passed to make daylight saving time permanent. It is not set in stone yet, but the news of this decision prompted some funny reactions on Twitter, so let’s find out what the public sentiments are.

On Tuesday, March 15, the US Senate unanimously passed The Sunshine Protection Act which would make daylight saving time, also known as summer time, permanent beginning from 2023. To become a law, the bill must also be signed by the House and President Joe Biden.
Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida said that he is not sure what the House can decide to do but he thinks that the time has come for this conversation to be realized.
Another Senator, Patty Murray, thinks that this has to be signed as soon as possible and said, “I urge my colleagues in the House to act as swiftly as the Senate — let’s get this bill on President Biden’s desk and deliver more sunshine to Americans across the country.”
There were many surveys conducted by various organizations in order to find out how Americans feel about changing the time twice a year. And the results were always the same: the majority wanted it to stop.
According to a AP-NORC poll from 2019, 71 percent of Americans wanted to stick to the same time all year round. The question that divided people was which time the country should stay in. 31 percent wished daylight saving time was permanent while 40 percent said they would prefer standard time.
The latest Economist/YouGov Poll made in 2021 shows that 63 percent of adult citizens agree that they should stop changing the clock, but again, opinions were divided when they were asked which time should remain. According to the results of this survey, more people thought daylight saving time made more sense to have all year round.
Americans are not only ones that see setting our clocks to different hours to be stupid. After receiving 4.6 million responses from all of the 28 countries in the European Union back in 2018, the European Commission presented the survey’s results. It appears that 84% of respondents were in favor of just leaving one time all year round. 76 percent of respondents noted that changing the time twice a year is a 'very negative' or 'negative' experience.
Many countries have already abolished time change and now mainly only North America and Europe with some countries in South America, the Near East and Southern Australian states still stick to it.
So why was it introduced in the first place? Just as the name suggests, it has to do with saving daylight. In the summer, to make the most out of the sunlight, we set our time one hour forward and use less electricity in the evening. Also, because the day seems longer, maybe people spend more time outside the house and save electricity in this way.
I have to constantly look at my phone to remember the day- who has time to keep track of daylight.
However, it has a toll on people’s health. People report that their pattern of sleep gets messed up, which then contributes to our metabolism changing, which can cause weight gain. It also contributes to mood instability, irritability, and increased risks for accidents while driving or working. It’s also ironic that companies trying to save money by saving electricity actually lose it because of how tired their employees feel.

What's with the voting rights thing? I am in eastern EU, so tangentially read about this? Is about ID when voting? That is a common thing everywhere or is something more like people are dined ID?
The proposal is keeping Daylight Saving Time year round, not getting rid of it. Gives everyone an extra hour of daylight at the end of the day, when more people are active and will benefit.
Wait - time isn't real? Next you're going to tell me that money is fake and that there is no reason whatsoever for a handful of people to own most of America while millions live in poverty.

Okay, but, to be fair, at least they FINALLY got rid of this crief. It's a lesser issue, but we can still be happy.
Do it. Arizona and Hawaii don't do it and the world hasn't ended for those states. It's time to ditch it nationwide.
Did you know that some kiddos get on the bus for school as early as 4:55 in the morning for those districts that have only 1 school per county? Most schools begin around 8:00-8:30. The sun did not rise here in Ohio till 7:45 yesterday morning now that we are DST. Because of this, nearly all bus riders were waiting at their bus stops in the dark. By keeping DST, these children will be at bus stops, in the dark, for about 5 out of a 9 month school year. Changing the schools start times will not work because parents have to have their kids at those stops before they can leave for work. Something to think about.
I honestly don't know why people are so bothered. Anyone who has ever travelled across a time zone has dealt with this innumerable times. It seriously takes no more than two days to become accustomed to the change but people are getting their panties in a bunch like it is actually affecting their quality of life year round.
I'm glad that I'm not gonna be changing my clock twice a year, which really screws things up for me for a few days. I wish that Congress was more focused on bigger issues, but it is what it is, and it's still an improvement, at least for me.
I hate DST. It takes me weeks to adjust. Do we really need sun until 10 pm (in the summer)??? I wish they chose standard time instead of DST. It means that the sunrise doesn't come until almost 9 am in December/January where I am, and my kiddo has to be at the bus at 6:30 am for a 7:20 am start time.
I hate springing forward!! The only thing I look forward to in life is falling backward ! If this law passes we will be in a constant state of sprung forwardness ! And no I never “get use to it “ !
Its nice to know that all issues worthy of the senate's attention have been adequately handled. Now we can focus stuff like this and maybe weather or not we should outlaw whale farts as to eliminate their carbon footprint.

They got it all wrong. They should eliminate daylight daylight saving time. I don't care if it gets dark at 8 instead of 9 in the middle of July. What sucks is getting up and going to work before the sun rises when it doesn't have to be that way. Children are going to be standing at bus stops waiting to go to school in the dark. And if we never switch back, that hour we usually get back every fall is now gone forever.
All of these posts are basically "why did the Senate do something quick, easy, and non-controversial, when there are so many hard complex and divisive things to address"... uhm, because it was easy? And you know the Senate can work on more than one issue at a time right? It isn't like they suddenly stop all work on EVERYTHING so they can put this through.
I say we split the difference. Next fall we go back 30 minutes and then call it. Also, how is this going to affect our clocks that have DST programmed in already? What if this is just Big Clock making us all buy new clocks?
This extra hour of sunlight is going to contribute to climate change!
I'm honestly for this I had no idea it was daylights savings time on Sunday and was so confused on how I sleep until 9 am with A) Sleeping in the basement, which means you can hear all the footsteps B) Two toddlers in the house. I was thrown off all day
I think people should understand why we have daylight savings time before they express their opinion on doing away with it. It really has nothing to do with energy. If we stay on daylight savings time, our kids will be going to school in the dark during winter. If we stay on standard time, the sun will come up at 4am in the summer, while the latest we'll have daylight is 8pm. There really is a valid reason why we do this if people would just learn why instead of complaining about changing the clock twice a year.
I live in Arizona and we don't use it. Lucky for me because I'd be late/early for everything forever. Glad they're stopping it tho cuz it messes up the start time of some of my tv watching.😁

Sure pick a time and make it permanent, but why does it have to be one or the other, daylight savings or standard? I say we split the difference, move the clocks by a half hour and leave them there.
radical idea: if the sun is up later, just adjust work hours to later. Like get to school / work at 9 and finish at 6 instead of 5, or whatever. This thing doesn't affect us because we're psychos here in SA and we get up around sunrise / just before sunrise anyway. Most people are on their way to work at 6:30am. Even in winter when the sun is up at about 7.
