I think we can all agree that science is a good thing.

Science has led to virtually all of human progress (the remaining part probably being sheer accident) and we’re better off now. And if you don’t think so, then please give back the phone you’re likely scrolling this page on and go back to the dark ages.

Speaking of dark, there’s a Facebook group called The Darker Side Of Science that’s all about science memes of varying degrees of laughtitude. Yes... that’s a metric [looks nonchalant].

People are buying this idiocy of 'the robots will do all the boring jobs". Great. What do they think will happen to all the human who do those boring jobs? While being a cashier or a petrol station clerk is nobody's dream, at least it puts food on the table. The robots will save the big companies millions but it will create even more poverty and inequality.

Yes...SO FAR. Sadly, there are some brilliant criminals out there (& also in politics). Just imagine what this world *could* have become, if people w/ the brainpower, ability & resources had decided to do some Good w/ such gifts. Alas, too few of the 1% chose that route. It's tragic for humanity that so many who could have Truly made a Big Difference wasted such potential positive outcomes. Instead, they've chosen to chase Greed & Power. This situation is on target to become tragic for *EVERYONE* before the end of THIS century. Elon may be able to get a few humans to Mars... where he will *also* have Full Control of the oxygen they need to survive. Good luck, small band of remaining future humans. As you suffer your impending slavery to Dork Vader, I'll be happily decomposing. Our species' worst traits WILL be its undoing, as the future grows ever darker. 😥

That's probably because your understanding of what a "placebo" is has been misrepresented to you by the media and its reporters' VERY limited mental ability. A "placebo" is the standard, FDA approved method of care. You can't test a new heart medication on a test-group and not continue the care of 50% thereof with just what the media calls a "sugar pill." They'd all die of their heart condition. Instead the group that does not get the new, currently tested heart medication gets their regular, doctor prescribed medicine; and they are not being tricked.

The history of why Pluto became a planet and Ceres didn't is quite interesting. It's mostly because Pluto was originally calculated to be much bigger. And Ceres was originally calculated to be much smaller. Make Ceres a planet, I say.

Ceres was a planet for half a century after its discovery, was then "demoted" to asteroid (together with Vesta, Pallas and Hygea). Now it promoted again.

Oh for heaven’s sake! It isn’t about size, in these instances (unlike some others I could mention). It’s about the ability to clean out one’s orbit of other materiel. Pluto’s orbit is so wildly elliptical and off-center to the rest of the planets, it may very well end up a moon (moons…if you count its tag along little buds) to Neptune some millennium. And let’s not even start on the hood Ceres lives in……ugh…….

Well ... we define a set of properties that a body must have to be a planet - orbiting a star, or having done so, hydrostatic equlibrium, visible in the spherical shape (well, somewhat, let's leave it at that for now, although there's more to spheres and hydrostatic equilibria), and we should decide on a set that makes sense. Astrologists may be a better match to define than I am (come to me with questions about vehicle tech, that, I know), but after defining a sound set of criteria, every body in question is examined, and either is a planet, or is not. If we'd change the definition to include Pluto, how many other almost-planets are there to include, that are just slightly smaller, slightly less spherical, slightly less stable in their orbit? We'd crowd the sky, so to say. Pluto being a dwarfplanet (in german, these are called "Zwergplanet", literal translation) is fine by me ... makes it no less Pluto, and no different, it just is a word that defines a type of astrological body. Pluto, having been considered a planet for almost half an orbit, now is kind of the Star among dwarfplanets or almost-planets or whatever they're called - way better known than any of the other. Five in our solar system (Exoplanets are more the bigger side of planets anyway, any exosolar object that might qualify, isn't observable by us as of now, therefore, we don't know any, but have reason to expect them to exist) are considered dwarfplanets, and I only know Pluto. About 100 could be classified as such, but aren't yet - and, whatever we call Pluto, it's as known as all the other doubtless planets, and still an interesting object of research for various reasons.

So, what was that bit about learning being fun? American English points out that making learning fun gives students meaningful opportunities to apply their newly-acquired knowledge all the while lowering what’s called the affective filter.

The affective filter is essentially an attitude (or a set of them) that affects the success of second language learning in people.

Anyway, when using learning activities that are engaging and fun, students often become more willing to participate in them and take risks. By introducing the element of fun, the human mind has an easier job at retaining information because of how enjoyable the process is.

American English also provides examples of fun activities to try out: listening tasks can become more fun if they are turned into a team-based game show; speaking tasks can be turned into a twenty questions type of game; reading can be a relay race of reading a set length of text; and writing can become a game where students pick out writing prompts from grab bags. That definitely beats sitting down and listening, though.

And you can honestly do that with any discipline. All you need is to adapt the games to the types of skills you’re teaching and you’re set.

In terms of science—any science discipline, really—one of the more popular ways of engaging folks to learn are field trips. Heck, even going out to the playground or garden can teach kids about our world. You know, slugs, photosynthesis, the need for recycling and pollution, that sort of thing.

Back in the late 80s I was living in Florida and for one of my open water SCUBA dives, we went to Crystal Springs (I think that was the name). It had a section of the river that was a manatee sanctuary and since you couldn't enter one as such, you could hang out nearby and wait with just our snorkeling equipment. After a short while a couple of manatees came over to us and interacted with us. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life! They came and rolled over and seemed to like belly rubs. And here is the point of the story.... they did indeed fart. A lot. It was awesome.

But, ultimately, you don’t really need to go anywhere to make learning fun. Running lab experiments is just as exciting—capillary action, amplifying smartphones, the candle in a water glass trick, crystallizing rock candy, apple slice oxidation, building a solar oven, layer liquids are just some of many options out there to try out.

While unusual, there are a few species of snake that are actually poisonous. Rhabdophis keelback snakes are both venomous and poisonous – their poisons are stored in nuchal glands and are acquired by sequestering toxins from poisonous toads the snakes eat. - https://www.osc.org/can-snakes-be-venomous-and-poisonous/

there's a difference between poison and venom. yet if you search if daddy long legs are poisonous it says the but with the word poisonous as when you search if they are venomous. I told some sassy girl at school that there's a difference when she was saying they were poisonous, she said there wasn't. she's gonna face the truth someday tho.

Whenever I see this photo, I want to tell the irate woman that just because her boyfriend is on a diet does not mean he can't read the menu.

Hi, you’re on a rock, floating in space. Pretty cool huh? Some of its water. Actually most of its water. So much of its water that I can’t even get from here to there without buying a boat. It’s sad. I’m sad. I miss you. HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?

Maybe they’re designed so homeless people can sleep on public things (benches for example) that have been purposefully designed to discourage this? You’d need to be wearing a very specific type of weird looking clothing, so I don’t see it working

It's an art project. A lot of buildings in city centres are deliberately created for people to be unable to sit on them. This artist wanted to draw attention to how inhumane it is that corporation's wishes are considered more important than human's need to sit down once in a while. So the artist showed what shapes our bodies would need to be, for us to be able to sit down in city centres.

She is officially a SCP that breaches every Christmas (if you don't know what SCP is I recommend looking it up, trigger waning of course because some of the things can be a bit rough, but it's cool over all)

I would have classified the "getting bangs" phase as being during the Late Heavy Bombardment.
