After J.K. Rowling Said She Wouldn’t Forgive Him Over Trans Stance, Daniel Radcliffe Responds

Daniel Radcliffe is “really sad” about Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling’s anti-transgender comments and hasn’t spoken to the writer in years.

The 34-year-old actor has reiterated his support for the LGBTQIA2S+ (abbreviated LGBTQ+) communities and their related civil rights during an interview with The Atlantic.

“It makes me really sad, ultimately, because I do look at the person that I met, the times that we met, and the books that she wrote and the world that she created, and all of that is to me so deeply empathic,” said Radcliffe, who portrayed the protagonist in all eight Harry Potter films from 2001 to 2011.

Highlights
  • Daniel Radcliffe expressed sadness over J.K. Rowling's anti-trans comments and hasn't spoken to her in years.
  • Radcliffe reiterated his support for LGBTQ+ rights, responding to Rowling's criticism of Harry Potter actors.
  • In 2020, Rowling mocked an article for using "people who menstruate", sparking controversy over her views.

While the Tony Award nominee is grateful to have taken part in The Wizarding World, he still feels like he should speak out against Rowling’s comments and highlight their differing views regarding the communities’ rights.

“Jo [Joanne Rowling], obviously Harry Potter would not have happened without her, so nothing in my life would have probably happened the way it is without that person,” he added.

“But that doesn’t mean that you owe the things you truly believe to someone else for your entire life.”

Responding to a recent message shared by the 58-year-old author about how she wouldn’t forgive the Harry Potter actors for their advocacy for LGBTQ+ communities, Radcliffe said, “I will continue to support the rights of all LGBTQ+ people and have no further comment than that.”

“It makes me really sad, ultimately, because I do look at the person that I met (…) and the world that she created, and all of that is to me so deeply empathic,” he expressed

The Kill Your Darlings actor also explained why he addressed Rowling’s anti-transgender comments in 2020.

“I’d worked with the Trevor Project for 12 years and it would have seemed like, I don’t know, immense cowardice to me to not say something.

“I wanted to try to help people who had been negatively affected by the comments. And to say that if those are Jo’s views, then they are not the views of everybody associated with the Potter franchise.”

The Trevor Project is a suicide prevention and crisis intervention nonprofit organization for LGBTQ+ youth in America. Radcliffe has been supporting and contributing financially to the organization since 2009.

Radcliffe starred in all eight of the Harry Potter films adapted from Rowling’s fantasy novels

In 2020, Rowling provoked controversy after mocking an article for using the term “people who menstruate,” a common term used to include people who don’t identify as women but still have their period.

“‘People who menstruate. I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?” the mother-of-three wrote at the time on X.

In a separate post the same year, Rowling wrote, “If sex isn’t real, there’s no same-sex attraction. If sex isn’t real, the lived reality of women globally is erased.

“I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives. It isn’t hate to speak the truth.”

Though “sex” is sometimes incorrectly thought to have the same meaning as “gender,” the terms describe different constructs. The World Health Organisation defines sex as “the different biological and physiological characteristics of males and females, such as reproductive organs, chromosomes, hormones, etc.”

Meanwhile, gender refers to “the socially constructed characteristics of women and men – such as norms, roles and relationships of and between groups of women and men.”

The 34-year-old actor reiterated his support of the rights “of all LGBTQ+ people” after Rowling accused him of “eroding women’s hard-won rights

The lead actor of Rowling’s popular fantasy series responded to her remarks in an essay published on the Trevor Project, writing, “Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations.”

Last April, Rowling made a comment about the Cass Review, which looked at gender identity services for under-18s in NHS England.

The review, by Pediatrician Dr. Hilary Cass, concluded that gender medicine operated on “shaky foundations” when it came to the evidence for medical treatment like prescribing hormones to pause puberty, as per the BBC

Puberty blockers can be used to delay the changes of puberty in transgender and gender-diverse youth who have started puberty, the Mayo Clinic states. They’re not recommended for children who have not started puberty.

The medicines used for this purpose, GnRH analogues, don’t cause permanent physical changes but pause puberty instead, giving young people a chance to explore their gender identity. When a person stops taking GnRH analogues, puberty starts again, Mayo Clinic explains.

In April, the best-selling author accused Radcliffe and his Harry Potter co-star Emma Watson of “using their platforms to cheer on the transitioning of minors

Following the release of the British-government-funded report, the English native took to her social media to say she was “bloody angry” about what she called “severe medical malpractice.”

“Kids have been irreversibly harmed, and thousands are complicit, not just medics, but the celebrity mouthpieces, unquestioning media and cynical corporations,” she shared.

A fan then responded to her rant on X, saying, “Just waiting for Dan and Emma [Watson] to give you a very public apology … safe in the knowledge that you will forgive them.”

The best-selling author stated that she wouldn’t accept an apology from the Harry Potter stars. “Not safe, I’m afraid,” she said, characterizing Radcliffe and Watson as “celebrities who cozied up to a movement intent on eroding women’s hard-won rights and who used their platforms to cheer on the transitioning of minors.”

People praised Radcliffe’s response to Rowling’s anti-trans stance

As a lesbian, who tends to dwell in a LOT of "women only" spaces, I don't feel threatened at all by our trans sisters sharing those spaces with us. You see, I welcomed and made friends with trans women, and learned who they are, under the skin. And guess what? They are women. They think like women, they feel as women feel, and they empathize like women. So why should I let a set of genitals invalidate their inner self? I wonder if these TERFs would like to be reduced to their genitals being what defines them as a person? Goodbye feminism - you have female genitalia, which means clearly nature made you as a factory to pump out babies, and breasts to feed those babies - you have no business in spaces that belong to men, who are clearly designed to hunt/protect, which in modern times translates to work/provide. That's your primary identity now. How's that sound? Horrible? Then stop judging trans persons by their genitals.

The majority of the population are free to live by their gender identity, why would we deny that right to the transgender community?

Us cissies have it so easy, and yet a group of us choose to make life even harder for those who don't have the luck to be born in the right body. It's really shameful

Daniel Radcliffe is a good person, he is not afraid to stand up against JK's outdated and inaccurate statements. JK used to be seen as ally to LGBTQ+ community, nowadays though she seems to want to ruin her legacy.

"If sex isn’t real," she says, "there’s no same-sex attraction. If sex isn’t real, the lived reality of women globally is erased." I'd counter that with "If money isn't real, there's no trade or ownership. If money isn't real, the reality of global debt is erased." Look, we live in a world of social constructs. Money, calendars, nationality, marriage... these things are no less *real* for being largely defined by humans and changeable as or when we see fit.

There are nations and cultures that recognise multiple genders and have done for centuries, they have respected and even revered various genders without issue and without conflict or dismissing others, however have they managed that? This is a multi-faceted discussion and one that is way too complex to be discussed on BP and reach a consensus. It is however saddening to see friends being lumped into generalised groups, being treated as third class citizens because they can’t conform to the way that western society has deemed it necessary. We lack compassion and demand rigid rules that aren’t always necessary when we are confronted with situations or people that we can’t easily control or that we don’t understand. When people are grouped together in an uncomfortable, inaccurate manner and then have their lives dictated to it doesn’t end well for anyone. Be more kind, think about the individual, they are valuable, just like you.

Well said, and equally true for both sides of the debate. We seem to forget that both sides are human, and are allowed to have an opinion. It reminds me of the Israel-Palestine issue, where both sides seem to reduce the other to inhumane monsters who delight in genocide. No one (barring the extremely mentally ill) delights in it. But instead of discussing the issues, we dismiss the other side’s points and resort to terms involving ‘phobic’, ‘TERF’, or ‘bigot’, reduce it to ‘far left’ or ‘far right’, take statements by people, grotesquely exaggerate them and then condemn on that basis. You’re right, this is a complicated issue, and we should be able to discuss it rationally and respectfully. We shouldn’t make the divisions in our society even bigger than they (worryingly) already are.

J K Rowling feels entitled to use the platform that her fame has given her to express her views. Whatever we feel about them (her views) she has that right. But she seems to forget that those rights extend to others who disagree with her, namely Daniel Radcliffe. Good on him for speaking out..

Well this thread has turned into an explosion of ‘This comment is hidden’, why is that? Too much use of profanity and anger? Settle down folk, this discussion is only going one way. The trans community is a thing, it’s not going away and rightly so. We will move forward, there was a time when we hid away those who didn’t conform, we sectioned them or denied them a voice, thankfully that’s changing, very slowly but it’s changing. See the individual, talk to them, stop believing the overhyped media and open your minds, you’ll see a group of people who want to contribute and be recognised, they don’t want hatred to be the language that applies to them.

Well it seems the troll has returned in full force... Onto the topic at hand, it's great to see Radcliffe standing up for what's right and decent. I think a lot of people forget that pride was started by trans people as well as gay, lesbian and bi, in the late 1960's. Trans people fought for the rights of gay people, and it's about time we stood up for them. Rights are never handed over, they are hard fought for and require years of dedication, and just because they are in law, doesn't mean they'll be implemented effectively. We should all be appalled by the hateful rhetoric used against minorities, big people with big mouths using their big platforms to target vulnerable members of society is disgusting and should be treated as such.
