But. All plastics are biodegradable.. it may take 400 years though... into smol micro plastic particles. 😕 fully compostable in home compost should be better! So hope they are home compostable and no plastic left after 240 dagar 👍

They come at 40 cents for a set of spoon, fork and knife. It's 6 times as much as the plastic ones, twice as much as other bioplastic ones, but it's on par with the wooden ones you can commonly find nowadays. So, pretty much in the market.

Extra neat, the pits tended to degrade badly in composting etc. So this process accelerates the recycling a lot.

These listicles often have me doing a deep dive into the facts and stories, and getting lost in a rabbit hole of interesting information. This time, a few of the posts caught my attention. The one about tigers appearing green really had me questioning all that I once believed to be true. And whether I might be color-blind.

I was intrigued, and relieved, to read that tigers are in fact, orange. To humans at least. But I honestly had no idea, until now, that they're sort of like the chameleons of wild animals. Well, not quite. But almost.

The Lions, Tigers & Bears site explains it this way: "Tigers appear orange to humans because most of us are trichromatic (or sensitive to all three primary colors). But boars, deer, and other tiger prey are dichromatic and only pick up green and blue light. They’re effectively colorblind to red, like some people. This means that they cannot distinguish between red-orange tones and green tones. So, an orange tiger, to the prey’s detriment, will seamlessly blend into the forest backdrop."

Damn, that's interesting.

There are 4 Native Americans currently in congress, the longest serving one is Tom Cole of the Chickasaw Nation from the State of Oklahoma. Of the 4, 3 are Republicans from Oklahoma, and 1 Democrat from Kansas. However we did have a Native American VP from 1929-1933, who had been the President pro-tempor of the Senate before that, Charles "Indian Charlie" Curtis (Native American Mother, White Father, didnt know English until he was 8, and was his 4th language).

When the fanatics took over Timbuktu in Mali it had one of the largest collections of rare original Arabic texts in the world. They wanted to destroy all of the books. But the entire city is built out of adobe and the people there just carved holes in the walls and hid books wrapped in plastic there. They left a few copies or modern versions for the fanatics to find and told them the rest had been stolen by the government. People were törtured and a few were k¡lled but most of the books survived. After the fanatics were driven out and suppressed by the government the librarians there started a world-wide crowd-funded restoration project that raised more than enough to build a whole new library. Somewhere in there there's a box with my name on it containing a book that I will never see in person and have no idea what it's about. Here's what it looks like: timbuktu1-...18cde6.jpg timbuktu1-copy-689955818cde6.jpg

A Town Especially Built For People With Dementia

There was a tv series about 8 years ago, I don't remember if it was Australian or British. They built places that looked exactly like the houses people with dementia lived in when they were younger (based on photos I think). They lived in these houses, monitored and cared for, for a month or so and fund that their dementia symptoms were lessened. Because they were living in environments that they remembered they were a lot calmer and less agitated.

My grandmother was in a nursing home for people with dementia in the UK-it was designed for those who are still active and mobile. She used to get so frustrated and upset when we couldn't let her outside because she'd wander off, but in the home, they had a central courtyard with a row of pretend shops (post office, grocery, butchers), and a hair salon-there was a real hairdresser who visited the home and thats where she worked. There was a little 'town square' with a bench and pot plants. The patients used to wander around freely-the 'shopkeepers' were volunteers. The vegetables and tins the grocery 'sold' were just put back on the shelves once the patient went 'home.' She loved it there.

I've been advocating using empty malls as communities for dementia sufferers. ground floor shops, doctors, dentists, movie theater, playhouse, library, food court, seating areas. Above housing units of varying sizes, communal dining areas.

I just said the same thing in a reply above! I think it would be a fantastic use for an old mall. It would be a place where seniors could have doctors, pharmacies, stores, food, community, and entertainment, all under one roof, without even having to step foot outside. Of course, the mall would have to be in decent shape to start with. And housing people doesn't make money, so land owners, investors, and lawmakers aren't gonna be interested. Sadly. But it's such a great idea.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hogeweyk. The nursing home is called "Vivium Hogewey", in the district Hogewey, whichvis a part of the city of Weesp. It is a huge nursing home, and a part is called "De Hogeweyk", a play on "wijk" which means district. And yes, this is funded by taxes and the mandatory monthly health & care insurance fee every citizen has to pay. Insurance is not connected with employment, it's the other way round: Without health insurance you can not get legal work.

We need more of this. If not actual towns, a big enough building where people can feel like they're going about their daily lives. Caretakers in disguise is brilliant!

    Marie BellaDonna

Would be a fantastic use for old malls. Fix them up, turn some of the stores into living spaces, and others could be doctor's offices, physical therapy centers, drúg stores, maybe a hobby shop, etc. Get a couple restaurants or a cafeteria in the old food court, and set up chairs and game tables, and a little stage for events like bingo and dancing, make it a communal meeting spot. Many old malls had a movie theater, with some of the infrastructure left. Put that in, and maybe a miniature golf course or something. Have railings and call buttons everywhere, and have caretakers and medical personnel on staff, just like a regular nursing home. They'd have everything they need right at their fingertips. They could go out for a stroll or a night in the town, without ever leaving the building. They wouldn't ever have to worry about driving (for the ones without dementia, who still do), or getting lost, or wandering into a bad part of town, or even going out in the weather. I think it could work. If the mall building was in good enough shape to start with, ofc. But alas, housing people doesn't really make money. So the lawmakers and property owners would never go for it.

One of my favorite fun facts is that Rosa Parks was not a tired old woman who refused to get up. She was a young activist who knew what she was doing. I prefer this narrative, not just because it's true, but it's a reminder that people of all ages can inspire action and make choices rather than what was fed to me growing up, which was that things will magically change on their own because of happenstance chain of events.

Ilitch was instrumental in the (continuing) turnaround of the city of Detroit. He believed in the city when other folks wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. His restoration of The Fox Theater by itself was a gutsy move but then to bring his headquarters into the city had people wondering if he was crazy. He understood what prejudice was all about and worked in deliberate ways to try and do away with it where he could.

There was a radio host last year who left their car open overnight and a possum got in. They were afraid of the possum (Australian, so possums are just cute and curious, not dangerous) so didn't use their car for a week. I can't remember what happened in the end, but they were convinced by listeners to check out the car after a week.

Yes, they're cute and curious when they're used to humans. They're better off being wild and fending for themselves, though. Wild Australian possums are fully capable of doing you damage. Angry or injured, they're really feisty and rescuers take precautions and are very mindful how "cute and curious" they are not unless they've been humanised (and even then, be wary). Source: I've previously been a wildlife carer. Predominately, it was orphaned brushtail possums that we reared and prepared for release.

She didnt want this attention at all. She had a history of mental issues and this pic sent her spiralling. Her relatives tried to stop this as it was against her spoken will, she hared how she looked nd everyone thought she was an old lady, she was 38 here. So this is a mixed emition image for me.

They decided to buy a house and have kids together although there was never any romantic feeling between them, they were just best friends. The kids were explained the situation and they actually said how happy they were because so many of their classmates had parents who fought and/or got divorced but their parents didn't have those issues.

I might have to flat share when I retire, due to the lousy British pension. But when I mention it to friends, it turns out a lot of us wouldn't mind, given there was enough space and everyone had their own room. Why not? We complain about our "loneliness" and the lost feeling of having family around, yet we could now create our own families. Of course, this would require big flats, and capitalism demands that you squeeze as many flats as possible into one building...

This is of course far more than just sad. It has sparked the re-armarment of many European countries. Banks are investing again in the defence-industry, something that was an absolute no-no just a few years ago. We have started to buy tanks again after retiring them because 'they were no longer necessary as deterrent'. The UK has started to re-evalueat their war-fleet and have found it lacking. There are talks of conscription again, almost 50 years after it was not maintained anymore. People are encouraged to prepare for having to live for 3 to 4 days without having access to water, food and electricity in case of cyber-attacks. As western countries we've been too naïeve in believing that everyone wants peace, not war. That's simply not true. For the russian government, lives don't matter. That is why they attack schools, hospitals, markets, any place were civilians need to be.

There are plans for an interferometric array based on the James Web design. A small fleet of coordinating telescopes of this type can zoom in and get the same sharpness as a giant kilometer wide one could. Just imagine, we would perhaps be able to actually see details of the surface of exo-planets. Or at least see other solar systems.

Similar to Australia where there was already a chain with the rights to Burger King when the US company wanted to open up here. They ended up having to call their stores Hungry Jack's in Australia. I don't know if there are any actual Burger Kings around anymore though.

This is in the Netherlands, in a village near me. The US Wendy's left the Benelux (Belgium/Netherlands/Luxemburg are called like this) in 1986, after 6 years. 1988 a guy opened that shop, named it after his daughter and reserved name rights for the Benelux. Since then the US Wendy's is furious and we in Benelux think this is hilarious.

Bc this map is only Amtrak Red Routes, not Amtrak Green routes, state routes, local trains, etc. It's a very deceptive choice to use this map (https://www.amtrak.com/content/dam/projects/dotcom/english/public/documents/Maps/Amtrak-System-Map-020923.pdf)

we used to have more, then all the major rail companies were nationalized in the AMTRAK, prices went up, service quality down, and the majority of rail lines shut down. But also this map is also false, there are far more Amtrak routes than this, not to mention all the state and interstate routes run by the states not the feds. Like Metro North with is NY and Connecticuit isnt on there, SEPTA which is PA and NJ isnt on here either, etc. This is just a map of Amtrak direct Routes, not all their routes either (https://www.amtrak.com/content/dam/projects/dotcom/english/public/documents/Maps/Amtrak-System-Map-020923.pdf). If you want to be honest, you need to show all train routes, or for Europe only government run ones and not inlcude local or urban routes either

I'd imagine it's fairly relative. This looks like a company pushing quantity over quality, which is why they didn't spend on upright or slanted drafting tables. Slanted tables generally feel more comfortable than the upright ones, though. Good balance of posture and letting gravity hold your tools down. Unless you mean upright as in slanted upright, not like, easel style.

There's a size difference. These here are the big ones. The tilting kind were smaller. If you needed to draft large plans, horizontal tables were the way to go.

I'm surprised they didn't manage to get him on bipap instead. That's what allowed my youngest brother to live another 6 years after we thought he would die because his muscles were not working well enough for him to breathe on his own. They thought he would be on it for 23 hours a day, but for most of the time he only used it while sick or asleep. It uses a similar process, forcing air into and out of lungs (unlike c-pap which only does one way).

He was found in the mud at the bottom of a pond, so maybe an aquarium with plenty of algae was decent accommodation.

I wonder how all the garbage made it into the middle of the street. If our binnies went on strike, I'd put my garbage neatly to a side, maybe on a shared bundle with my neighbours. The binmen are not to blame for that chaos.

Looks like New York City in the '60s. One New Year's Eve, it was transit; the next it was garbage collection. It went on like that for, or close to, a decade.

Well there were hangups and drops but they stayed on the phone as much as possible. He thought he was near one town and waited with his car, flashing his headlights when he saw a car hoping it was his parents. After they were unable to find him he decided to walk to the town and meet them there. It was during that walk that the "oh sh!t" happened. He most likely fell into a river. It was later learned he was wrong about what town he saw. His parents later successfully fought for Brandon's Law which requires law enforcement to change how they treat missing person's reports when that person may be in danger. They had been told he had a 'right to be missing' once his age was learned. So no help from police.

Jules: yes of course the taxpayer paid. It's how government gets paid for. I suspect the cost was trivial compared to - to take one example - the weekly maintenance bill on the Palace of Westminster which - for those who don't know - is a crumbling wreck which should have been closed down for urgent repairs years ago. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palace_of_Westminster. Stopping bits of it dropping off or catching fire is horribly expensive.
