You've probably already heard of the internet’s beloved corner of Reddit known as “Oddly Terrifying,” which is home to a whopping 2.5M members. The community is dedicated to sending chills down people’s spines by sharing images that are hard to look at, yet tempting to watch, in a strange way.
“It’s hard for us to look away from unsettling photos and videos because they challenge our usual ways of perceiving and cataloging the world, disrupting our sense of ordered reality and even suggesting that reality might be something other than we thought it was,” Lisa Yaszek, a Regents Professor of Science Fiction Studies at Georgia Tech, previously explained the phenomenon to Bored Panda.
This time we wrapped up the newest batch of oddly terrifying images, so pull your seat closer! After you’re done, more of the same goodness awaits in our previous features here and here.

Terrifying Water Bottles
While we may feel completely safe while watching uncanny images, glancing into weird and terrifying-looking objects, places, and people, encountering something odd and terrifying in reality is rather different. So in order to find out how terrifying experiences and events affect our personalities and behavior, as well as ways to build resilience to them, we spoke with Dennis Roberts, an American clinical psychologist based in Paris from the Paris Psychology Centre.

Roberts explained that frightening experiences can be challenging for us, but it's important to remember that they don't really change who we are. “Sometimes people can experience events that are so overwhelming that they feel that they will never be the same again. And that's understandable,” he said.
According to Roberts, what really changes, though, is our sense of security in our environment. “Someone who has been in a severe car accident, for example, might say that they have trouble feeling safe in a car following the accident. Their personality hasn't changed, but their sense of safety in that environment is now different,” he explained.
Dall-E Generated Image Titled "Last Selfie On Earth"
I can't be the only one wondering about the "person" on the far right.
Queen Elizabeth waiting on us all to get off her front lawn.
Load More Replies...If you are wondering, why the AI generated such an unsettling image: it's an AI. It creates images based on millions of images and image descriptions feed to the AI. The selfie part is therefore the obvious part. The apocalyptic vibes of the background are probably like this, because "last ... on earth" will usually be the description of already apocalyptic images. It's not a prediction or based on any reality. If you tell an AI to paint a picture of the apocalypse, it will exactly do that.
Here's my positive backstory/context for the image for you 🙂: t's okay! It's just the last selfie. That's because they're getting better, sustainable technology and deciding to all live underground while they heal the earth and will make it 3x better than ever. And that person with the selfie is just about to go underground and get all healthy and happy again.

It is perfectly normal to feel distress after any terrifying events. But you may wonder why some people get PTSD after these events and some don't. Roberts said that it’s hard to answer because we really aren't completely sure. “There seem to be some possible answers, but there is more research to be done. It might be a mix of previous experiences, underlying beliefs about ourselves and the world, and maybe even genetic predisposition.”
According to Roberts, “what matters is the idea that if someone feels that their reaction to a traumatic event has become problematic, perhaps they are having trouble sleeping because of nightmares, or they are experiencing intrusive memories, or they are having trouble with severe emotional reactions, then they should seek help.”

Aside from this picture, also terrifying is the last recorded transmission before his spacecraft fell to Earth.
He supposedly went down "crying in rage", cursing those who put him in the poorly constructed module. The main and the emergency parachute failed.
He knew he was going to die because it was rushed by the bureaucracy. He only took the mission with the demand that his funeral be open casket to show the world what they have done and to show the dangers of rushing complicated tasks.

The psychologist argues that there are good treatments available now, based on good research, and help is available. “If someone is in this position, perhaps a conversation with their primary care physician might be in order, or a talk with a psychologist or other mental health provider would be the best place to start,” Roberts said.
A Humbling Message Outside A Cemetery In The Middle Of The Woods
Clever and not really unsettling. I think the message is beautiful actually. Reminds me of: Don't ever laugh as a hearse goes by, for you may be the next to die..
Or, as said in one of the greatest movies of all time: "You'll see it's all a show, keep them laughing as you go - just remember that the last laugh is on you..."
Load More Replies...A very well known, traditional message that you could find pretty much everywhere, except in modern society where people apparently decided to live as if death didn't exist and started to freak out at the mere evocation of it. To be fair, death was much more of a random and daily thing in ancient times, so people had better acknowledging it anyway.
This message, but in Italian, is also set on a sign inside Rome Capuchin Crypt (Santa Maria Immacolata a Via Veneto). Which makes the Rome version much scarier it the fact that it was put into the hands of an actual upright 17th century skeleton wearing monk's robes...
I saw that on a show once, if it is the same one, the skeleton is a saint. Sorry, can't remember the name.

Roberts argues that it's most important to acknowledge to ourselves that something frightening or overwhelming has happened, and to remind ourselves that it's ok to feel scared in those times. “I can accept that I was scared and it was a frightening experience. That sounds obvious, but a lot of people get themselves into mental health trouble by deciding that they can never let themselves think about what happened. A thought, a memory, is just that.”
What Has He Done
I'm guessing this was to prevent grave robbing, which was very common years ago. Edit: Just Googled these. Apparently they're called mortsafes and were common in Victorian Britain to prevent body snatchers. Back then medical schools and such would pay good money for a dead body for research so people would dig up and steal the bodies of recently dead people to sell. Like Burke and Hare, but they didn't rob graves but killed people to sell instead.
Is this an anti vampire grave? From when people used to believe the undead could rise up?
This is a grave to stop grave diggers from taking the dead body. The time must be around 1800s or something.
Load More Replies...This was common in Scotland. It prevented grave robbers digging up recently interred bodies for doctors to dissect, or for their grave clothes and jewellery.

The psychologist reminds people who went through difficult things that “it isn't dangerous to remember, and if we make a big effort to avoid thinking about or remembering something, we are probably not going to get the results we want. It is often the struggle to control our thoughts and memories that makes things worse,” Roberts concluded.
Body Riddled With Parasites As A Result Of Eating Raw Pork For 10 Years
Trichinosis I guess. Though the patient having eaten raw pork for 10 years doesn't really make a difference. You just have to eat the wrong raw pork once to catch this little bugger and then the severity of the decease depends on how your body handles things. The worm larvae are encapsulated so they're protected from stomach acids and only come out after they've moved to the intestines.
Do they remain stationary once they emerge or do they move around?

Question 1: Why does someone think they eat raw meat? Question 2 : So these parasites can survive our stomach acid. Aren't things evolving and eventually wanting to... get out?
The meat does not have to be raw, just insufficiently cooked to kill the parasites. Trichinella can be found in many kinds of wild meat or in pork where the pigs are allowed to forage. Thankfully, it's not a problem with inspected meat in the USA. Once the parasites are encapsulated in the muscle, they remain there until consumed by another unsuspecting victim. Parasites are extremely creepy.

I Live On Part Of An Old Rice And Cotton Plantation. I Know A Slave Cemetery Is Somewhere In The Area But No Records Survive Showing Precise Location. We Got A Ton Of Rain A Few Days Ago. This Was Uncovered By The Water After A Few Feet Of Erosion
Would a wooden coffin really survive this long in the ground? Or is that not what I'm seeing?
it depends on the soil conditions but i think it could, especially if this was later during the time that it was legal cuz remember, for a long time after the trade was illegalised "masters" didnt have to release slaves and children of slaves were also kept on the plantations so this could potentially be from the later 1800s, rather than the late 1700s.

Load More Replies...Did they bury slaves in coffins? Or just in a shroud? Making or buying a wood coffin sounds like an expense most slave owners would forgo. Slaves were usually considered livestock rather than people. I still can’t believe we did that.
A coffin could be made of just simple wooden boards without any extra features. The dead slave’s family could have also made it.
Load More Replies...I think that's a stick, but it definitely does look like a toe.
Load More Replies...It depends on the ground and PH levers. I bought a really small wooden box (about the size of my largest finger’s last joint). It’s carved from “bog oak” which a tree that fell into a super anaerobic peat bog. The waters preserved it quite well; the tree died 10,000 years ago. The wood is darkened but definitely wood; I could burn it if I wished. Look up “Tollund Man” or “bog bodies” but prepare to be a little freaked out. Don’t be squeamish either.
The Lower Dungeon Of Warwick Castle. An 'Oubliette', Where Prisoners Were Dropped And Forgotten About
It is very likely this was never used as a cell but as a latrine instead. To post an excerpt: "An example of what might be popularly termed an "oubliette" is the particularly claustrophobic cell in the dungeon of Warwick Castle's Caesar's Tower, in central England. The access hatch consists of an iron grille. Even turning around (or moving at all) would be nearly impossible in this tiny chamber. However, the tiny chamber that is described as the oubliette, is in reality a short shaft which opens up into a larger chamber with a latrine shaft entering it from above. This suggests that the chamber is in fact a partially backfilled drain. The positioning of the supposed oubliette within the larger dungeon, situated in a small alcove, is typical of garderobe arrangement within mediaeval buildings. These factors perhaps point to this feature being the remnants of a latrine rather than a cell for holding prisoners."
While I agree with the top comment about it more likely being a latrine, I wanted to comment that I only know what an "Oubliette" is because of the Labyrinth. :)
First thing I thought of when I saw "oubliette" was the movie Labyrinth
Anyone who talked about Labyrinth here…thank you! I named my son Bowie because I loved him so much 🥰🥰🥰
I've been to Warwick Castle when I was 10 (before 9/11) and I didn't see an oubliette on our tour. Looks sad and lonely though.

Robert Earl Hughes (June 4, 1926 – July 10, 1958) was a farmer and circus sideshow attraction. He was born weighing a hefty but not abnormal 11 lb 4 oz and was a fairly average-size baby until he contracted whooping cough at about five months old. The whooping cough was believed to have played a role in his extraordinary weight gain. At age six, he weighed 175 lb., at ten, he weighed 380 lb. Hughes made some income from selling photographs of himself, as well as guest appearances at carnivals and fairs. While travelling with the roadshow in Nappanee, Indiana, Hughes developed a rash, and the flesh under his fingernails turned blue. Because he was unable to be moved to the nearest hospital in Bremen, Indiana, doctors treated him at his trailer, and determined he was suffering from measles. He developed uremia, and died at age 32.

Ortolan bunting are a small songbird that is wild caught, force-fed to fatten it, then killed by being drowned in brandy. They are so small, that they're eaten as a single bite. It's cruel, illegal, and the birds are endangered.
That's absolutely disgusting. Humans are the scourge of the earth.

C'est illégal depuis un bon moment en France mais certains chasseurs en attrapent encore...

I Was Walking Through A Farm Near My House When I Suddenly Tripped And Fell And I Saw This Right Infront Of Me, What Kind Of Spider Is That ?!
And also totally harmless to humans, despite the name and apparence.
Load More Replies...All spiders are venomous, but most are harmless. It looks like a species of Orb Weaver, but I'd have to look it up and it's like 3am here.
We call them drawing spiders. Because it looks like they draw.
Load More Replies...Okay, so it's a Florida thing! I saw someone further up call it a "wasp spider" and was sitting here like "but I've always heard them called banana spiders " I'm from Tallahassee, so it makes sense to me now 😂

It’s an orb weaver, a St Andrew’s Cross I think? They’re quite common in Australia, I’m not sure about elsewhere. Why is this on the list?
Always called it a drawing spider they're really neat and shake their whole web when threatened
These used to swarm in my garden but I haven't seen any this year, which is concerning now that I think about it.
Grandma's garden is full of them by now. Few years back, I found one of these with a huge bag of eggs she was carrying around, seeking a place to heve them hatch unmolested, and it seems either she succeeded in doing so, or there already were more than that one. Anyway, I can't walk more than two meters in the meter high grass without encountering at least one of these. Other spiders reside there, too, and they, too, do so in abandunce. Thousands? Course! It's like 1700 m² or so, so I'd expect it to be well in the five figures, all spiders together. These are immigrants from the mediterranean, in germany, they first appeard around Berlin and in the Ruhr area, where international travel was a lot more frequent than elsewhere in germany, seems this has brought them along, and seems they're doing well here. I have no hard feelings about them whatsoever, but sometimes I'm still impressed by their size. A body length of more than 1" is common, and at Grandmas, the largest I've seen was at least 1.5" long!
Glued Herself To The Street With Fast-Drying Concrete
In Europe, so-called “activists” like to tape themselves to busy streets in the middle of rush hour to raise awareness of climate change. Currently, they even go so far as to attach themselves to priceless museum treasures such as Raphael's "Sistine Madonna". Needless to say, these people are not very popular in Europe.
There was some in the UK that dug up the lawn at Cambridge University. You'd have thought that destroying green space would be actively against what they're protesting, but there you go. I'm all for saving the planet but these so called activists are just stupid and insane.

Me: Oh it's almost 11 I ought to sleep, but there's something on my game to do in four minutes what can I do until then... OH YEAH that creepy BP article! I have no brains cells left I swear
It makes it feel like nothing is worth it....this is how things will end, despite our good intentions and the struggle for happiness. I'm ready to take my eternal nap.
What do you do when you're left still crying for help...
