I've always thought this was the right and only way things should be: employees get paid but also get tips as gratefulness rewards by customers. Recently I learnt about this tip-being-employee's wage bulls**t. It's ridiculous and whoever came up with it is a disgusting excuse of a human being.

I think it's down right appalling that staff in the USA is dependent on tips for wages. Tips should be - as it is in Europe- an extra benefit, if the customer was exceptionally pleased with your services. Not a calculated addition to your salary, one which you depend on, and customers are expected to give no matter the service provided. It f***s up the system.

I was gobsmacked when I first realised that that was what paid the staff wages - tips!! I suppose in Britain, and other European countries it seems so alien to us because the staff are paid wages and receive tips on top of that! I mean, if you get a waiter/ress that don't do a good job, etc you still NEED to tip them. Whereas here, we just wouldn't leave a tip! Personally, I think having the tips as an extra on top of their wages would then make them more inclined to do a good job?

Tipping in the US is a hold over from slavery. It was a way to get around paying freed slaves, a wage. Waiters, hotel baggage attendants, rail car workers, etc all worked for "tips" and were freed slaves.

I remember hearing this before visiting Italy in 2011. I asked if it was true at the hotel when I first got there and staff confirmed. I still left a 5 euro tip each time I ate out because the food is so much better there than in America. I left a 20 one night because it was by far the best thing I've ever eaten in my adult life.

There's a few places here in the states that are starting to follow this trend, which is good. I've worked in the service industry office and on throughout the years, mainly to supplement my teacher's salary, either as a bartender or a waitress, and it can be tough. Your hourly wage is right around $2.33, so tips are crucial. I've had numerous coworkers that relied solely on serving, and I could see how stressful it was when we were slow. I can't imagine having to budget when you don't know how much money you're going to make. Especially when you have customers, that no matter how hard you work for them, only leave a few dollars on a hundred dollar tab, then after they're finished, sit at the table for HOURS talking, meaning you don't get another group. My mom, and aunts waitressed here and there, so I was raised to leave a good tip, and to make sure I had enough money with me to do so. However, even though tipping is the standard practice here, a lot of people don't.

Waiters receive higher salary in Europe, agreed. But they still depend on tips. As a waiter in Munich, where I'm from, you get about 10-15 Euros per hour, usually. Not enough to live in a decent way in such an expensive city like Munich. Even though it is not obligatory to add a tip, it is very much appreciated, hence I was taught to tip - and so I do, always - but the percentage is depending on the service. 10% is standard for me, but if I felt heartly welcome, it could also be 15 or slightly more. I mean, when I spent let's say 50 Euros for a meal and wine and had a great dinner, it doesn't matter if the bill is 55 or 58 in the end. I also tip at my hair salon, nail studio and so on.

Same in London, I make sure to give tips whenver I eat out - I feel bad if I or someone else with me doesn't.

Same in New Zealand and Australia...

No expectation of tips in New Zealand or Australia. The minimum wage is the minimum wage. I've had friends ask incredulously why you're tipping wait staff and while I've never known restaurant staff to refuse a tip, I've known taxi drivers to.

Not everywhere in EU, its always really appreciated when you ask. Tips can make 40-50% of our salary 🙌. CZ & SVK does not include anything in the price

LOL - no wonder it takes 20 minutes to get a beer! I'm gonna get a 6 pack of budweiser or drink before I goto a socialist bar. Do a great job, get tipped. Do an avg or s**t job and get less - capitalism makes the customer always right rather than the socialist labor unions.

That’s kind of a backlash in Italy though. Service is terrible in Italy and you’re surprised if anyone just smiles at you at a restaurant.

Well, what about 'coperto', the compulsory Italian tip? I agree that in most EU countries tips are optional and given as a gesture of appreciation for great service, but the whole 'coperto' thing really pissed me off in Italy.

It's quite hard when it's now a 4th world country. This means "deliberately under-developed".

That will kill the last bastion of being able to make a decent wage without an advanced degree in America. Bartending and waiting tables will pay the same as working in retail and millions of people will become unable to support themselves. That’s what we want? The US doesn’t have the structure to behave as the rest of the world does.

As a European, I am baffled at the thought of people, who live in so called 1st world countries, having to work more than one job to survive. Oh my.... If I was religious, I would pray for my fellow humans in the US...

While I agree, the problem with the States is you have State taxes plus many time city/town taxes as well. Talk about a totally munted system.

Minimum wage should be a liveable wage. End of Story.

That's awesome they're able to make that kind of money. However, that's no the norm.
