Dogs used in war were quite rare since a bunch of people likely in protective clothing waving sharp objects are not easy targets. It's even less likely after gunpowder spread because to bear loud bangs requires special training with very little to show in return. In WW2 the Red Army used them with explosives straped on their back as antitank weapons with very little succes rate. Dogs just don't functioni well in high stress environment. Nowadays there are more dogs used by militaries searching for boobytraps and IEDs.
