‘Murdered By Words’: 50 Epic Comebacks That Immediately Put Jerks In Their Place (New Pics)
Welcome to the internet, a place to find like-minded people no matter what your background is. Sounds fun, right? Sadly, it can become quite toxic. And we're the ones to blame for it. Racism, misogyny, classism; all of society's wounds fester online just as much as they do in real life.
However, being insulting and mean often comes right back to bite you. Amongst the most impressive ways to fight internet trolls is by using the epic art of the comeback. Fierce, well-constructed, and piercingly accurate arguments end up in the subreddit called Murdered By Words. This community with over 2.6M members is the place where verbal assassins cut right through the BS and share some of the best burns.
When you’re done scrolling through this list, you’ll find some more inspiration for savage comebacks by checking out Bored Panda’s previous posts on the subreddit here, here, and here.

F***ing Dumb Is An Understatement
Little tip: if you're unsure which side of an argument you're on, pay attention to which side is making broad, combative statements (usually including calling their opponents 'stupid' or 'retard') and which is calmly stating facts backed up by reliable sources.
Confession: after a certain number of passes where I calmly state facts and offer reliable sources, and get called stupid or gullible in return, I've been known to make combative statements.

One of my favorite things to say to people who compare two unlike things (the flu and cancer, for example) is "you just compared a fork to Jupiter".
you just compared a fork to Jupiter". and that makes sense?????
Load More Replies...I would make 10 new accounts to also upvote this, but I think that is breaking the rules
Exactly. Thank you! Too bad the rest of the morons thinking otherwise don't get it.
Load More Replies...Same amount of people who die from the flu every year about died from covid... of course a few more than normally but about the same. This is nothing but a stronger strain of the flu. Because they actually gave it a name it's supposed to be more scary than the "flu". A lot more people died from the norm of cancer, heart attacks and lately shootings but no word from the media on that of course.
U chump where do you think these facts came from that you've twisted into a nightmare? Media never said nothing about cancer and heart disease and gun violence?! Judy because you don't read news doesn't mean it's not there. But hey why don't you do some more Facebook research and really own the international scientific and medical community
Load More Replies...A while back, Bored Panda talked to the mods of r/MurderedByWords who said that "a murder should (but doesn't always have to) be more than a quick response or retort. The best murders are well-constructed, thought-out responses that leave the opening argument completely without any ability to reply.“
And there's more than one way to crush your opponent verbally. A burn or “a quick rapier thrust or stab to the heart (a short, swift reply) can be just as deadly as a drawn-out murder, and you'll frequently see both types in this sub," the moderator explained. And as you can guess, put-downs shared in this group might be some of the most enjoyable one-liners in human history.
But when you end up in the middle of a heated argument, emotions can take over. Especially if the person you're disagreeing with is sticking to an opinion that's just nonsense. So having in mind the rise in the number of flat earthers and anti-vaxxers, staying civil on the internet these past years can seem like an impossible task.
Satanists Just Don't Acknowledge Religions
what do you mean by accurate sorry im just curious about all the people who hat eorganized religon for some reason were not all that bad. the reason we dont like abortion is because its goes agaisnt our religon and thats fine i just dont get the people who get mad at people who get a abortion wehnt ehir not christians
Load More Replies...Anyone curious about The Church of Satan and modern day Satanism in America, I'd highly recommend you watch the documentary, "Hail Satan?!" Very interesting and quite hilarious. Satanists love trolling Christians.
I mean, they're not wrong. We do believe that Satan is real.
Right, there's a difference in believing in the existence of, and worshiping
Load More Replies...Maybe you don't. But most Christian's do so much evil in the name of their God. If that's not worshipping Satan... Never mind, it is.
Load More Replies...And while ruthless put-downs seem entertaining in the online world, other principles apply when you're arguing with someone in real life. To find out more about how to deal with those who mock you, Bored Panda reached out to Neel Burton, M.D., a psychiatrist, philosopher and author of Heaven and Hell: The Psychology of the Emotions.
Burton is doubtful that throwing put-downs to the mockers actually make us feel better. "Someone who's insulting you is already in a weak position—or why would they be insulting you—so it would be unkind to shatter them completely. If you respond with compassionate silence, the message will be both stronger and kinder,“ he advised.
Murdered And Exposed And Torn Asunder...
I wish that green was wrong... this inequality is something that needs to be changed in the world.
He's not wrong. America wouldn't be what it is today if those things hadn't happened. But I think America would be so much better if those things hadn't happened. Those atrocities, aside from just being horribly evil, created negative mentalities, misguided values, discrimination and racism that America is still dealing with today. So hurray, thanks for all the baggage, people of the past! You screwed everyone over because of your greed.
Manitoba had a newly sworn in councillor get called out and drilled by on camera saying s**t like that.
It's similar to the Caribbean region, so much of our indigenous people were slaughtered when the Europeans arrived. There are very small numbers remaining.
Oh my gosh, I didn't know that some Americans are actually aware that their military is terrorizing the rest of world and that some of their soliders aren't actually heroes as it is presented but rather more like terrorists.
Actually, Blue does get the point. This country would not be what it is today if we had treated Native Americans like human beings.
Or not decided to take everything that was not ours in the first place. Wow!! Look at all this land. We sure could use this. So, we'll just start moving in and taking all of it. No ask, just taking. All of it. Shove everyone into places with no resources and no ability to live in the same way as ancestors. Break treaties when it's convenient for the settlers. And even more shame (🇨🇦) let's just take them from their families and destroy the language and culture and abuse them while we're at it. All in the name of God. Nope these nations (🇨🇦& 🇺🇸) wouldn't be what they are today. And the First Nations wouldn't be who they are today. Proud Nations still having to demand to be able to, rather than be free and respected enough to live as proud Nations with all the rights and opportunities as everyone else.
Load More Replies...My ancestors, the Potawatomi, were forcefully displaced by what is known as the "Potawatomi Trail of Death" and some fled to Canada, which is where my family is from. I'm not only descended from Native Americans, but refugee Native Americans. Sure things are ok, but I'd probably be a lot better with all this generational trauma.

what did she expect in a gender neutral bathroom? men lining up and waiting for her until she finishes using the bathroom?
Ikr? She starts off with "I used a gender-neutral bathroom". Not "I had a gun to my head and was forced to use a gender-neutral bathroom".
Load More Replies...Also I presume man #1 just went into a stall to do his business, not drop his pants when he walked in.
i think she missed the point entirely of the purpose gender neutral bathrooms how can she feel violated if she didn't want this to happen or was worried then why not use the women's bathroom
To be fair a lot of places (at least where I live) no longer have women's bathrooms at all, it's either just Gender Neutral, or Men plus Gender Neutral. I'm completely in favour of gender neutral loos to accommodate trans and non-binary people but it is crap that so often companies will just decide to turn the women's bathroom gender neutral. (Or worse, the disabled accessible toilet is turned into the gender neutral one.) I've never seen a situation where the men's bathroom is the one being sacrificed.
Load More Replies...Gender-neutral bathrooms have been a thing in the UK for yonks. Mostly places that are too small to have separate bathrooms.
Worked in UK school with gender neutral bathroom. It had little to do with trans (nice bonus though) more about school bullying taking place in girl and boy toilets. It worked!
Load More Replies...hmm I wonder what she does at home with that non-segregated bathroom. Scary stuff.
Presumably she doesn't have strange men walking freely into her home and getting their penises out...
Load More Replies...We had coed bathrooms at Caltech back in the 1970s-1980s. Everyone successfully went to the bathroom.
Clinical psychotherapist Eva Jajonie agrees with this line of thinking, and offers this explanation as to why the desire to offend someone is a sign of vulnerability: "When suppressed concerns and feelings, such as lack of self-esteem; self-defeating thoughts and behaviors; guilt; and anger, for example, are not treated or dealt with, the person uses insults to unleash anger, to escape dealing with the pain or trauma experienced.”

Hey America! Can you feel the burn of the Australian Sun hitting you?
Take it from an Aussie - we're not watching your goings-on with jealous admiration: we're watching with appalled horror.
So glad our kids don't have to worry about being killed when they go to school. None of this active shooter drills, metal detectors, security guards etc. And parents don't have to worry if our kids will make it home alive.
I was in primary school in the UK when Dunblane happened. Government immediately banned guns and I never had to worry about getting shot at school. Idk how it's a controversial decision to protect children.
That’s right, we don’t want to be you. We’re happy just the way we are. For the record, we had a gun amnesty and Aussies gave up their guns willingly because we knew that there are some things in this world that you just don’t need.
The amount of people that died by firearms in the USA throughout the last 20 years is higher than the number of fallen soldiers in every war the country had since 1776. So statistically it's safer in a warzone than being home for US citiziens
Sad that a child under 10 knows what active shooter means. Thank God I live in the UK
I'm not sure what is more messed up about the U.S.: the lack of universal healthcare or the complete lack of gin control. Or the systematic racism or the militarised police or... I could be here all night. The civilised world just looks on in horror and sympathises with those with an appetite for change but limited power to effect it.
Say Her Name
In Chicago, their home city they probably are. It was in the Chicago Tribune. Still clumsy writing, but they were trying to make it relatable for their regular audience.
Load More Replies...She was significant because of what she accomplished, not what her husband accomplished.
This is a double shame because the video of her husband's wild excitement while watching her Olympic performance was really lovely.
Reminds me of the "Stephen King's Wife" malarkey. As they both kindly pointed out, a) She has a NAME, b) She is also an author in her own right, and c) The news item they were reporting on wasn't even something Mr King was at the centre of.
Now that we know someone who is taking a cheap shot at you isn't that much of a threat, another thing to consider is status. According to Burton, we should try to keep our integrity: "If you engage the insulter on their own level, you are bringing yourself down and giving their insult far too much legitimacy.“ Staying levelheaded during an argument is not easy, but can be learned with practice. Like, try to notice when the adrenaline starts kicking in stopping it. Or take some deep breaths to remain calm, whatever method works for you.

Science Is Hard
Just learned that IV drips contain a body-altering substance called 'vitamins'. All people who died had at some stage consumed vitamins. Never using IV drips again.
Do you know that IV is roman numerals for 4? Well! If you add two to four, you get six. And what is 6 x 111? That's right! 666.
Load More Replies...Yes, that's right. I, an autistic person, have consumed water. Oh. No. /s
It had been scientifically proven that 100% of people who died had been inhaling gas containing significant amounts of O. I'm so done with that.
I agree - the Government need to do something about that. I pay my taxes dammit!
Load More Replies...But guys, think about it. Every single person who has died was at some point exposed to dihydrogen monoxide!
We're living in a culture where a 16 year old boy who stole a car, got high on laughing gas and drove head on into an ambulance seriously wounding the medics, in the process killing himself and 2 of his friends (14 &15 years) in the car, is "A really good kid who made a silly mistake."

its funny that people that live in a country that was founded by immigrants has such prejudice against them
It's all part of the "I Got Mine, Fvck You" schema that permeates a huge swath of the American consciousness.

Load More Replies...They are not lazy, they are opportunists. The foundation America is based on.
But when you hear ignorant slurs, it's often difficult to just stand by. Here's where using humor can be extremely effective. "A good comeback is one that the insulter can also laugh at. It should not be too devastating. Ideally, it should be tangential, maybe even absurd,“ Burton explained. If your reply is funny, well-timed and well delivered, it can diffuse the tension of the situation and undercut the mockery.
The Call Is Coming From Inside The House
As a Non-American, I am still struggling hard to understand why everything that even remotely resembles a working social system is condsidered communism... It works in nearly every other country, with such side effects as keeping criminality low, eliminating the need for guns, raising the statistical life expectancy.
It believe it is due to the brainwashing they get all through their education system. Taught what to fear but not enough on how to think objectively
Load More Replies...Can someone briefly explain to me the reasoning behind the far right use to see socialism as communism?
Either the speaker doesn't know the difference and assumes both are evil, or the speaker is comfortable assuming this of their audience.
Load More Replies...Sure seems to be a lot of anti-American hate speech on this website lately. Lots of people wanting to tare down america for things that the average citizen can do nothing about. It saddens me but I am proud of my country its just sad that the vocal minority are the only ones being listened to these days.
The trouble is the vocal minority are very, very vocal - but that goes for most countries. We all have our loons unfortunately. I'm in the UK. We also get bashed. Not as often I know but a lot of it is true and fair enough 🤷. It saddens me that we have a total tw@t like Boris at the helm - I mean he's hardly a prime example of decency and honesty is he? The opposition is lead by a worthy type but he has the charisma of a puddle. Though both make great material for comedians! We have to look on the bright side where possible. Don't take it personally - we DO know that most US citizens are perfectly normal and reasonable people.

Not capitalism, cronyism. I'm a capitalist, and this housing shortage is not caused by free-markets in any way. This was caused by government meddling, not capitalism.
Exactly. Social housing leads to housing shortage and rising prices. Well explained by Thomas Sowell.

Load More Replies..."An AUTOimmune" system?! Oh boy... Where to even start. It's an immune system. Autoimmune responses can cause severe disease. And I'm going back to bed now.

Load More Replies..."God" sent you here naked, squealing and squinting, yet here you are with your jeans, talking (or blathering) and wearing contacts. Still short-sighted, though, and not making much sense. 🤷♀️
Also, autoimmune describes a collection of medical conditions in which one's immune system attacks one's native, healthy tissues. I have three, currently, and they're not at all enjoyable.
YES! That medical treatment you don't want because you're waiting for god to send you a miracle, is the miracle that god sent to you.
As a Catholic, I can honestly say I have been taught that they is not the right logic. Receiving a vaccine is someone's choice, but shouldn't be refused based on this reasoning. It's like the analogy about the glasses, for those with worse eye with.
Load More Replies...That makes no sense. Humans are meant to have an immune system. Your not special coz you have one, also doesn't mean that it wont have times when it glitches or not work at all. Hence the NEED for vaccines, medications and other treatments etc.
You on a losing wicket there buddy.People been pointing out versions of that to religious folk for 1000 years. Hasn't worked yet...
If you throw anything at a wall enough times, it will start to stick. Even if it is no longer recognizable
Load More Replies...Working in a hospital, and fully vaccinated… what I don’t understand is the variability of this logic. Don’t trust a vaccine made by a man but will still take a medicine to save your life, administered by a human. Surgery performed by a human. If you’re so religious, stop getting human-made treatments. When god tries to call you home, stop letting human-made medicine prevent the meeting. Don’t pick and choose which human-made treatments to take.
I will never understand why the "muh freedumb" anti-vax crowd skitters to the nearest ER when they can't breathe on their own anymore. You thought medicine was a bad thing, Cletus. Go drown on dry land somewhere else-- we're trying to heal people here.

Load More Replies...Army doctrine was to shoot one handed until very recently. It's still a good idea to learn to shoot one handed in case the Gumbas are putting your other hand through a meat grinder. Plus, in Olympic shooting these are the rules, they cannot shoot two handed, and their caliber is puny, some are air guns. Also, I shot Desert Eagles one-handed. Not an experience I'd like to repeat, but also my bones were just fine. They are called "handguns" for a reason.
I object to your comment about "Bean-bag shaped mayonnaise filled men"... I for one can't stand mayonnaise...!
I Will Leave This Kind Of Debate To You People

Most people probably wouldn't even realize if you wore the same clothes two days in a row...we're all focused on living our own lives.

Load More Replies...Yeah, I don't think I've ever heard of men complaining about women wearing a dress more than once.
Did anybody actually say that women can't wear the same dress twice? I don't think anybody except for insanely rich celebrities ever followed that "rule".
Well, it's still stupid that it's a rule for celebrities. The media will definitely comment on it if an actress wears the same outfit for a red carpet twice. Having said that, the guy commenting on OP's post is probably right.

There Is Nothing Inherently Great About Any Country

"I feel like playing life on hard mode this time...let's get born in Syria"
Load More Replies...Don't forget that one of the main reasons those countries are "shithole countries" is the very active US foreign policy in South and Central America.

Load More Replies...Reminder: Undocumented immigrants in the U.S. pay billions of dollars into social security each year and can't withdraw from it. They're one of the only reasons social security is still afloat. Studies also show that undocumented immigrants are less likely to commit violent, drug, or property crimes than documented immigrants, and both documented and undocumented immigrants are less likely to commit those crimes than American citizens. The nonsense you hear about immigrants "ruining" the country is just xenophobic fear-mongering.
Can you reference your source for your comment on undocumented immigrants paying into social security?
Load More Replies...Also pretend that Canadian foreign policy had directly resulted in the collapse of the US economy in this scenario.
Honestly that's the most crazy part here because of canada's policy of accepting refuge for immigrants if they're coming from an unsafe country. So if america did go to s**t that policy would be very helpful.
Load More Replies...What the hell. Most didn't CHOOSE to live in those countries, that's just where they were born.
People like Red don't even know how easily it could happen. People can go from living a normal life to being refugees in a matter of weeks, and it could happen in any country, espcially with the current states of global politics and climate.

Okay. But "dear greedy c***ts"? If you're straight up addressing strangers like this, please 'reevaluate' your life and maybe lay off the social media.

I wouldn't be surprised if they made the kids move classes just to get some energy out of their system...
As a middle school student, it appears it’s so the teacher doesn’t have to move all their stuff all over and so the students don’t all have to take the same classes.

No, it's not just because you teach EBD, it's for all of us. You're right. We all need our classroom environment, and I'm proud of mine.
Load More Replies...It was the same when I went to school in Russia - you keep the same cohort of students through your entire school experience, only switching schools from primary to high school. You also have one classroom and the teachers come to you. Oh, and in primary school you get a nap room and enforced nap time - our room even had beds assigned to each child. I really didn't appreciate this enough back then; I wish someone enforced nap time for me now... Plus you get breakfast, lunch, and if you choose to stay at the free afterschool program, dinner. I remember being so confused when I moved to the U.S.
To be clear, you only get the nap room in primary school. And I don't know if this is typical of other schools - I lived in a small town just outside of Moscow and all of the schools in my town had the nap room.

When I was homeless people told me to sell my laptop. How am I gonna apply for jobs and search for apartments without my laptop???? Plus, I was working full time as a teenager to buy my laptop, I'm not about to let go of it so easily. Luckily, I still have it, and I also have a full time job and an apartment
I have a home, a job, I can afford to travel. When I'm travelling, I'm extra careful to keep my cellphone charged at all times. Wouldn't you, Red Person? This is your connection to the world, nowadays; you'd clutch onto that as long as you can, wouldn't you?
The only way this comment ever makes sense is that for mobile phone contracts (at least where I live) you need to provide a home address for the contract to start. I've wracked my brain and this is the only option I can think of where you would struggle to be homeless with a phone. Of course, given that there are PAYG options, and becoming homeless after the contract has been running for a while, this argument falls apart as soon as you give it more than two seconds unwracked thought. I have a headache.
There are organizations that give basic cell phones out to the homeless to help make it easier to get a job, so they have a phone number for an employer to get a hold of them.

I rarely go to Walmart, but one of the last times I was in one, I saw a man with pistols in holsters on EACH hip, and a third pistol in a holster in the small of his back. This wasn't a small man, either. He was easily 6ft 5in, probably 225-250lbs. Imagine being so afraid, angry, and insecure, that you feel the need to have three handguns (and probably more) to go f***Ing shopping in a low crime small town in New England. For those of you wondering.. yes, he was wearing a Red MAGA hat.
Honestly i cannot even imagine that! That would be crazy to watch in my country and probably police would be informed! It's really crazy that they can walk around like this

Your "hard-earned taxes" also pays for billionaire politicians to have free healthcare, free pensions, and like half a year of vacation. But, yes, shelters and food stamps are the problems.
Ja, deadbeat hey? I was very, very close to living in my car which was eventually taken so would've been on the streets, but luckily I didn't let that happen and I survived. Not all the homeless are a strain on society, some are there due to circumstances like what happened to me. And millions have ended up living in tents next to a tennis court or under a bridge because of COVID and some weren't lucky enough to even get a tent.
Perhaps he should fight for every worker's right to get a decent, livable salary, instead of telling people with two or three s**t jobs, with s**t salaries, to work harder.
It actually does benefit everyone to provide the homeless with homes, healthcare, and food. It cost a lot less in tax payer money to provide housing, it helps businesses which often end up in hostile relationships with local homeless people who scare off customers or try to use the restroom as a shower, it is the humane thing to do, cuts down on jails and court expenses, and increases local property values as there are not homeless people living in the local parks. It cost drastically less in taxes to pay for someone to live with dignity than to actively argue to keep them in the street like a stray animal. The goal should be to house the homeless instead of building shelters they don't feel safe in.
It's been shown over and over that the cost of providing universal health care would cost us less than we currently collectively spend on hospital emergency rooms being so many people's primary medical care provider - for which they are often unable to pay for at all. It is far cheaper to provide preventative care and earlier medical interventions than it is for a hospital be presented with extreme illnesses, etc. because the patient only comes in when it's so bad that they have no other reasonable choice if they wish to have a chance to continue to live.

I feel good about knowing that if I go into a bar or restaurant, there won’t be unvaccinated idiots in there.
Worst thing that can happen if you get vaccinated = small ouchy on your arm. Worst thing that can happen if you DON'T get vaccinated = death to you and your fellow human beings. So cut the s**t, grow up, and do something that is not just about you for once in your selfish life.
I'm going to get downvoted to oblivion, but the worst thing getting vaccinated isn't a small ouchie, it's some yukky side effects that wipe you out for up to 48 hours. Let's Get The Ignorant Ones To Write Policies
Myabe if he'd been around when his kids were babies he would know what is involved with having one.
As someone childless: bonding with a newborn is seriously important. There's also the fact that you'll probably have disrupted sleep patterns, need to learn how to be a parent (change the baby, wash the baby, feed the baby). I feel seriously sorry for Matt Walsh's wife and four children.
That's why in the Netherlands parents with a newborn have a qualified maternity nurse for one week, to teach both parents the ins and outs of taking care for a baby. They also do the cooking and cleaning so the parents can focus on being parents.
Yes, we were so thankful for it in those first hectic days!
Load More Replies...‘There isn’t much to do when the baby is a newborn.’ ??? Has this idiot actually been a father, a partner?
I had twins. My husband changed more diapers his first week of paternity leave then he had ever before (we have an older child). We rotated 4 hour shifts the week he had off, and when he went back to work he got a 8pm-midnight baby shift so I could get some uninterrupted sleep. He ended up having a mental breakdown from the strain at 3 months. Babies are no joke.
Because... men can't change diapers, apparently? Also, if there isn't anyone breastfeeding, then both partners can feed the baby a bottle!
My brother was the one to do most with his son, for one because his partner had a c-section and couldn't really lift the kid and certainly not carry him but also because he likes it. He changed most of the diapers (Still does, I think? - kiddo is only 10 mth) and walked him around when he cried and went to the physical therapy with him (ostheopathy because kiddo was a bit crooked) and did all kinds of stuff with kiddo. He's a great dad so far, and he definitely needs the paternity-leave
Not much to do. How about everything. Mom is exhausted from sleep deprivation, especially if baby wants to feed every 2 hours. Some do. Even if it's every 3.5 to 4 hours, breastfeeding takes a long time especially at the beginning. Trouble latching on, keeps falling asleep so you have to keep waking the baby up. And so on. Just regular breastfeeding with no issues takes time. And in between that and changing diapers the question is "Where's the sleep?!" And maybe have a nice shower to feel clean. Yes dad. Everything else. The Buttigiegs had twins. Obviously no breastfeeding involved, but hey, bottle feeding is no fun either when they're both hungry at the same time. Also, the need for dad to bond with the newborn is not appreciated enough. It shouldn't be maternity leave/paternity leave. It should be parental leave. They are the twins PARENTS. Regardless of being two dads.

they would not allow a 16 year old to adopt, but if she's pregnant, she's on her own.
I wish I could give you 100+ likes for that! That really shows how hypocritical they are.
Load More Replies...At high school amongst idiot girls who idolize "16 And Pregnant" on TV, you can bet your butt that pregnancy is contagious.
You get vaccinated to protect yourself and other breathing, feeling human beings from potentially deadly diseases. A woman dies every other minute from complications due to pregnancy and childbirth. Access to safe and affordable abortions can save many women's lives. No irony here, just logic and common sense.
"They want the option to choose what they do with their body". Okay, well, I can't speak about other countries, but in the US (where this probably was from), not one single person has been forced to get a vaccine. Not one. There are no rules, no laws, that allow for forcing someone to get a vaccine. You have a choice, so there is no need to fight for it. You might have suffer the consequences of choosing not to, though. For example, kids are not allowed to attend public school without a certain set of vaccines. But if they don't get the vaccine, nobody comes to the kid's house and forces them to take it. The parents have to react to the consequences and find a school that will take them or home-school them.

Tolkien Says Stfu
This might be a good analogy for mental illness. Frodo carried the thing all the way to Mordor, he had to deal with it every single second. In order to get rid of it, he needed Sam's help, but that doesn't mean he was weak or a loser.
I've always thought that too. Especially when Frodo says, "I can't recall the taste of food, nor the sound of water, nor the touch of grass. Instead I'm... naked in the dark." That sounds like severe depression. Like, "I don't even remember what it's like to want things or feel pleasure..."
Load More Replies...For me, it's never been about Frodo being a failure - moral or heroic. Not at all. I just found his plight to be so much more boring than all the other strands of the books, so I just always cross-read the to pick up the gist. My bros are Merry and Pippin, though, who are also true heroes in their own right (anyone knowing the books and not just seeing the movies will understand my defensiveness of Pip!), but I hold a very special place in my heart for Eowyn (once more: read the books!). Those three carried the books for me, but I never once thought Frodo was any kind of failure. Just that Tolkien's writing didn't make me feel as connected to him as to the others.
The book came out like 70 years ago so I don’t think it needs a spoiler warning any more…

In some places (and I'm pretty sure Australia has laws on this) you are not allowed to do the killing or butchering yourself. It *must* be done by someone qualified, to ensure that the animal is killed humanely (as an amateur it would be too easy to misjudge and wound rather than kill) and that the butchering is done in line with food safety standards - if you nick a bowel the food would be contaminated and couldn't be eaten.

It doesn't make sense. Language is for communication so clarity is key.
But the meaning is perfectly clear. Just because it's a different dialect or accent doesn't mean it's better or worse English. Furthermore, many people who speak a variety of English are perfectly able to code switch, as OP demonstrated. If you can't understand them then maybe the message wasn't for you.

Okay I would like to point out a few things 1. This woman is not writing a dissertation or a thesis, she is posting on social media account - she is using language typical of and appropriate to the context in which the post is being made. 2. At no point does she suggest what she wishes discuss is literature, only books. As there are plenty of books that would not be considered literature, I think it is therefor uncalled for to hold her to the high standards of grammatical pedantry that you all seem to feel the discussion of literature requires. 3. She appears to be using African American English NOT standard American English in the first post, I am not an expert in this dialect/language, just as I am not a expert in French, so I will not judge her grammar in a dialect/language I am not familiar with. 4. Some of you must surely see how holding a young black woman to standards set by (mostly) old white colonial men is a problematic. 5. We need to be more accepting of linguistic diversity
Also the hubris of people expecting a post I'm going to go out on a limb and assume was posted within the black twitter silo to be written in standard English is just like, I'm sorry are you expecting all the German people to just start posting in English... No. And yes I tone down my Aussie lingo, a lot, when posting on BP, because I understand that not everyone is Australian, but I'm not going to do it on my socials because for the most part I'm talking to my own social group, who, get this tend, to be Aussie. Also ESL people, dyslexics, neuro-divergent and even tired people happen to exist you know, so I don't know, try a little compassion people.
Load More Replies...Also I'm not sure why she uses, apparently on purpose, slang when talking about literature...

I mean, if you want to commit to extreme social distancing and zero human connection until COVID is eliminated, I suppose that is a choice. I'm not sure it's possible. But if you have absolutely no human interaction, I think I'm okay with you, alone in your cabin, not being vaccinated. You have no chance of catching the virus or passing it on.
The sad fact is I am vaccinated and still being a hermit. I am literally living in a log cabin in rural America. I am immunocompromised. The vaccine may not have been as effective for me, and even though I take every precautionn, I am very worried that I might still catch it. I went out this weekend for food and I only saw one other person with a mask and they had it only on their mouth, not their nose.

Unfortunately this argument is much more complex, as both sides do have a point there. Slavery did exist, but slave trade became a thing in egyptian history mainly because of greco-roman influence. While there are records of enslaved prisoners of war (which partly have made it into biblical records, see e.g. Exodus), this seems not to have been that common before. Especially the rumor of the pyramids being built by slaves proved to be rooted in legend, not fact. The user quotes a "price" from 896, which was far after the "classical" period. For most of the dynastic times (about 2700 to 1070 BC), Egypt did not even have such a thing as a money system - more like a standardised barter economy with partially fixed rates. They adopted the principle of currency from the greeks during ptolemaic times. So most of the detailed information of the answer is correct for the ptolemaic period and after, but does not pertain to the dynastic times of the Old, Middle and New Kingdom.
Even the Bible comments about slaves in Egypt. People being captured and sold into slavery. And the Mamluks were Turkish slaves in Egypt until they figured out they outnumbered their oppressors and took over.
err generally speaking I don't think the bible is considered a scholarly source at least outside of religious studies. As a historical document recording historical events it certainly has it's place but it's a bit parabolic to be used in making definitive statements, there are also some geopolitical biases as well as issues with translators missing specific context and nuance as each consecutive translation moves further and further from the original text.
