Yes, even with excellent insurance my breast cancer treatments cost our family $27,000 out of pocket over two years. Over the last decade, due to two major health journeys, we've paid nearly $100k out of pocket. We are not rich, we are in the range of low income.

We have to pay a monthly fee for insurance (usually employer pays a percentage) as well as a fee for any doctor visit. The fee is more if the doc is a specialist of some sort. (But the doctor also has to be "in-network" meaning they accept your insurance. If the doc doesn't accept your insurance, you have to pay in full, even in life-or-death situations.) If we're prescribed medication, we have to pay a fee for it, but insurance usually covers the rest. Emergency visits and surgeries are extremely expensive, even if insurance covers part of them. And ambulance transport is ridiculously expensive, so that's always the joke -- we'd rather take an Uber. We also have to meet a deductible each year for the insurance to pay in full. Sometimes the deductible is $10,000+ so you may never meet it in a year. The best insurance that I know of is if you're in the military. My parents are retired military and some of their medication is free, though they still have to pay doctor visits. But that's all only true if you have a job that provides insurance. We also have federal programs for the elderly (Medicare) and low-income (Medicaid). Whether those cover what you actually need depends on the state you live in and whether your politicians are working for the devil or your welfare.

We have medicaid (state welfare insurance, since we're low income). Co-pays are very low to non-existant but you get treated like cr@p, lots of places won't accept it, and you have to fight to get approval of a lot of medications. If somehow I manage to get a better paying job, we'll lose our insurance. (Well, our kid won't. And my husband is disabled, so he might be able to keep his. We might have to split so his fixed income doesn't affect us? I don't know. It's a mess, and nigh-impossible to get out of.)

I know bankruptcy doesn't include student loans and think it doesn't cover medical debt. She was trying to save her house. America can be great but not when it comes to insurance. AND we have to pay on average $400 per month for coverage

It can. It can be rare to have an insurance that covers all cost of your treatment. Also depends on where you go and what treatments you're getting

Yes insurance doesn't pay anything until I hit like $3200 then it pays 80% and they count any negotiated discount as part of their percentage that they "paid." I pay $176 every two weeks for this awesomeness. It is a family plan so four people.

You typically pay a portion, say 20%, up to a maximum per year. With insurance, my out of pocket expenses are capped at well under 10k per year.

Yep. More often then not this is the way it works.... 1. Some employers pay for a portion of your health insurance and you have to pay the rest; or you use the affordable health care act and using some of the money you anticipate getting from your tax return the following year, the government applies some of that money to pay for some or all of your insurance (if it doesn't cover all of it, you pay the rest); or you pay all the cost of insurance 2. Depending on you coverage, you may have to pay a deductible (specified amount of money that the insured must pay before an insurance company will pay a claim.) when you go to the doctor, get medication, x-rays, etc. 3. The health care provider (doctor, hospital, pharmacy, etc.) first sends the bill to your insurance company who pays none, some or all of it. (Rarely all of it). 4. The provider sends a bill to you that reflects the adjusted amount to you for payment.

It very much does. A lot of insurance companies now require a deductable--a set amount that we have to pay out of pocket before the company starts paying. Mine, for example, is $3,500 per year. Things like our annual check up are "free", but if your doctor actually diagnoses you with anything at that visit, you then have to pay for it. It's at minimum about $150 per visit. Hospital visits start at $500. It's all very, very stupid.

Yes it does. You have to pay monthly (or weekly) premiums for the insurance. Then there is a deductible (how much varies depending on your insurance). The deductible means that the first xxx amount of Dr visits, medicines, etc (ours is 3,000) you have to pay yourself. Once you've spent the amount of the deductible, your insurance will cover 80% of your costs.
