Next to being a professional photographer, I also might be a bit of a castlephile. If that is even a thing. Over the years, I developed a soft spot for old castles in stunning places. It always makes me a bit sad when I find out that a great-looking castle is surrounded by ugly houses or modern commercial buildings.
No matter how impressive the castle itself may be, it immediately spoils the authentic castle vibe. However, there are still some examples where over the past centuries, little has changed and it almost feels like you are a time-traveler. These are the ones that made it onto my 'Timeless castles' list. There are many more left to collect, but here are my favorites:

Classic View On Neuschwanstein Castle In Bavaria
Strictly speaking, this is not even a castle. It is a 19th century palace, imitating a fantasy vision of the middle ages that has very little to do with the real middle ages.
Went there many years ago and thought it was beautiful then. Fun fact for you as well, this is the castle used in the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang film!!!
Went here when I was thirteen. I'm 63 now. Never forgotten it, one of the most amazing castles ever.
Burg Eltz In Autumn. Just A Magical Combination
It Took A 300-Km Detour And A Terrible Few Hours' Sleep In The Car But It Was Definitely Worth It When The Sun Kissed The Towers Of The Fairytale-Like Pierrefonds Castle
Thought I recognised the castle! They filmed Merlin there :D it’s amazing! Great photo :)
I did the very same! Detour of a couple of hours on my way to another photo shoot 😂
Napoleon III got it renovated by Viollet-le-Duc to run the medieval ruins into his vacation home. The empire collapsed before the project was over, so it is still empty.
Hohenzollern Castle On An Autumn Morning. How Can This Even Be Real?
Once more, most of this is 19th century neo-historism, although this one at least has some original medieval parts underneath. Wish people would see the difference...

I could not agree with you more. If you have not visited the Outer/Inner Hebrides and Orkney and Shetland (you will have much more of a Nordic influence in Orkney and Shetland and Gaelic is NOT spoken on these islands) I highly recommended it. The landscapes are fantastic, the food is delicious, and their is history and arts galore.

There Are Many Castles To Visit In The Loire Valley (France) I Chose Chateau De Sully
" There Are Many Castles To Visit In The Loire Valley (France)" NOT ONLY in the Loire Valley but all over France: thousands of them !
Drove from Germany to Spain. France is really gorgeous. Before France left NATO, my husband was range master in Suippes France. It was a month TD. I was there for a week. Beautiful wine country with lots and lots of danger signs because of unexploded mines etc., from 2 wars. Wine country nevertheless.
" lots and lots of danger signs because of unexploded mine " that's only int the northern part of France where WWI took place. by the way France is back in NATO !

This is an article written in English, for an international audience. IIRC 'Lac Léman' was introduced by the French when Napoleon invaded the region, so it would actually be more historically accurate and "Swiss" to keep the old name.

The Wartburg In Germany With A Nice Spotlight On It
Are the two different styles two different eras of the castle’s construction?
Classic View On The Wartburg, One Of Germany's Most Important Castles
It's important, because the monk Martin Luther did the unthinkable here and translated the Bible (new testament) into the language of the common folk, ending the exclusive reign of the catholic clerics over the interpretation of the Bible. As the Bible surprisingly deviated quite far from what the church has been selling until then it lead to the foundation of the protestant church (Lutheran church). It also played a key element in the 1848 revolution https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wartburg
Was the stuff on the right added later? It’s such a different style.
All castles had pieces added over the centuries and almost all non-ruined castles in Germany were heavily altered in the 18th and 19th century.

I'd add Harlech, Carnarvon, Beaumaris in Wales, Tintagel in Cornwall and Alnwick, Richmond and Corfe in England.

Check out Ludwig II of Bavaria and his reign of crazy. He practically bankrupted Bavaria, but he built some absolutely gorgeous castles, fortresses and, my favorite, a hunting lodge. I mean he was bat crap crazy, but he had style.
