Everyone wants to feel a sense of belonging to a certain group of people because usually it means they share similar interests and views on life. Generally speaking, it's easiest to find like-minded people who were born in the same generation because they all more or less were raised in similar political, economical and cultural environments, so they share a lot of similar experiences and memories.

The world is moving forward so fast that the year bracket for a generation is getting shorter and shorter and even then, some people feel like they don’t belong to any of them, like people who feel they are too old to belong to Gen Z, but too young to fully relate to Millennials. So they just came up with their own generation, combining the two and calling themselves Zillennials.

And they gathered in a Facebook group called Born Zillennial. They share memes, the reality they face today and things they remember from their childhood. Bored Panda collected some of the posts that got popular recently to give you a glimpse of what the community is all about.

While not about this particular submission, but the whole thread: it's called a "cusper generation" and happens with just about every generation. Prior to the Zillennials, there are folks like me who are Xennials (on the cusp of Gen X and Millennials).

Born Zillennial is a private Facebook group that currently has over 200k followers and was created by Matt Duffy. The ‘about’ section says that Zillennials were shaped in the early 2000’s and are a little bit of a Millennial but they also kind of relate to Gen Z.

It continues, “We bridge the gap between the non-digital and digital-first... basically, we get the Best of Both Worlds. If you’ve ever felt alone being stuck between two rigidly defined generations, welcome home. Now get in loser, we're unlocking memories you forgot you had.”

They forget that rent is just rent. When you buy a house there comes a lot more on top of that. Legal fies, insurances, garbage disposal fees, sometimes water/ electricity/ heating is included in rent, it is not in the mortgage... and so on. So yes, maybe you can't really afford that house.

I haven't seen utilities included in rent in quite some time. When I lived near a college, yes. I'm currently looking for carpet cleaning to move out of my apt, needs to be professionally cleaned and deodorized, going to cost me about $400. I pay for all utilities separate. Renting costs a lot of extra $ too. If I was adding it to a lower mortgage instead of a higher rent I could do it much easier

Mortgage is the bank taking risk and giving you a loan. If the bank thinks you can't return 950$ each month to it for 20 years, he also thinks you can't do that with rent (but with mortgage it's the banks problem and it doesn't want that problem). Nothing is strange or absurd in this.

This is because a mortgage requires a down payment and around 15-30 years to pay off. Then you have homeowners insurance, property tax, and home maintenance. Add this all up and see if your mortgage is really cheaper.

We got in touch with the founder and he told us that everything actually started from a project assignment: “I started Born Zillennial as an assignment for one of my University of Florida College of Journalism & Communications (UF CJC) Online graduate courses. The class was Social Media Community Management and the assignment was to create an online community in the form of a Facebook Group.”

He revealed how he got the idea to focus on Zillennials to RooTV. “I was actually scrolling on Facebook and saw the Urban Dictionary definition of a Zillennial and I felt like I fit right in. I think it gave the years 1993-1998, but it basically said, you’re a little bit of both. I think I always felt that and I had heard the term. Then I started searching for it, saw it in some other places and I was like, alright, I can get behind this and I have nothing else for this assignment.”

When does "classic rock" turn into "oldies," 80s and 90s turn into "classic rock," and since I feel we've skipped at least one generational jump, early 2000s also I to "classic rock?" And why do I feel weird that the "classic rock" station also have Nirvana in heavy rotation?

It doesn't help that some things havn't changed much over the last 20ish years. Cars for example, 40's vs 50's, 50's vs'60's, 60's vs 70's, 70's vs 80's, 80's vs 90's. They were visibly different but since the 90's, most don't change much. Most have the same bubbly shape so a 95 blends right in with a 22.

If you are curious about how the project was seen by the professor, Matt let us know that they really liked his project and was excited with its success, “After going viral after a series of viral TikTok videos, he was instrumental in the early success of the community by ensuring I was providing a safe, active, and engaged online community. I received an A in the course after presenting my final report on Facebook Live in the group to ~10k viewers.”

To enter this group, one must answer three questions: 1. How did you find out about Born Zillennial? 2. What was your first phone? 3. What do you hope to gain by becoming a member?

The creator of the group commented that the word about it got far and new members heard about the group through various sources. Their motivations to join the community most often are to feel a sense of belonging, to be part of a community, to unlock childhood memories or to enjoy the nostalgia and find their people.

Even though generations are defined by the year one is born and there is a general understanding that age is what separates people because they have different values and goals in life, Matt told us, “While we believe there may be different life experiences & cultural moments that shape—and separate—generations, there is no perfect answer to the generational divide. We believe in the Born Zillennial Mindset: if you can relate to feeling stuck or being lost between two rigidly defined generations, welcome home. We do not gatekeep age range, and believe anyone who would gain value from the content & community we share deserves to join us in our mission to unlock the past, embrace the present, and brighten the future.”

Because of this mindset, Matt says that they don’t “allow negative discourse between Millennials and Gen Z” as the Facebook group is meant to connect people and not divide them.

Many upscale ice cream places (places that create their own ice cream from scratch using products from local farms) will give you free little tastes of their flavors using those wooden spoons. I suppose it's better to dispose of them in a landfill than to use small plastic spoons?

HA, my friends Shih Tzu would sit between the seats, inevitably turning on the seat warmers, a couple of times a passenger would look at me all concerned and ask “ why does my butt feel like it’s on fire” 🐶 Spunky, you are missed

LOL. First car I had with heated seats was German made and I soon found out why it had them, it was all that kept you from freezing to death in the winter. The engine would never get warm enough to open the thermostat so NO HEAT. On the flip side it was nearly impossible to keep cool in the summer. Ran so hot the AC would cut out.

He also placed Hercules on a sleeping Hera so he could breastfeed. She woke up and pushed him away. The milk spurted and became The Milky Way. Also Zeus would bang anything with a pulse.

Very little in the Disney version is accurate. My history teacher couldn't even use most of the movie when we were learning Greek history and folklore. (I don't think Greece history is ever taught without focusing mainly on folklore.)

95% of the drams in Greek mythology is either Male God couldn't keep it in his pants or Female God pissed at Male God for not keeping it in his pants. The other 5% is Mortal outdoes God (male of female) at something, God gets pissed at mortal.

It is really fun to read through the posts and remember the TV shows we watched as kids or toys we played with or see that other people had similar experiences while growing up, so we also wanted to know what the creator of the group enjoys the most about his project. For him, the most important part is the members: “Born Zillennial (BZ) would be nothing without our members joining, contributing, and reminiscing with one another each and every day. They submit a majority of the content.”

He goes into detail about the posts that he likes seeing the most, “My favorite posts vary across the three pillars of our mission: to unlock the past, embrace the present, and brighten the future. Posts shared by members that unlock the past or 'unlock memories' that we had collectively forgotten about are some of my favorites, from TV shows, toys, electronics, and internet history.”

The girl who lived in my middle school bedroom before me stuck those things AAALLLL over the walls. But, like, not the big plastic ones, just tiny little sticker ones. And then they painted over them. And then I moved in and they would STILL glow through the paint and drove me nuts but I couldn't get rid of them because paint and I hated those things with a f*****g passion.

Nostalgia is a very powerful and overwhelming feeling, so remembering the good old days does something with our hearts. But there are also things that Zillennials are experiencing now that they want to share and Matt doesn’t deny that he likes those posts as well. “Though, I equally enjoy when members embrace the present. This can look like networking threads to help with resumes or the job hunt, how to navigate post-grad life during a pandemic, and feeling alone or behind in life compared to others.”

It seems that Matt just really loves this group and everything people are sharing, however, he confesses that he has his favorites: “My all-time favorite posts are the BZFF (Born Zillennial Friend Forever) where we encourage members to make connections—we've even seen posts shared from members who have connected IRL - or found a pen pal from across the globe—because of these posts.”

Let’s not forget the fact that Miley Cyrus, a.k.a. Hannah Montana, who is mentioned in the posts quite often, is a member of this community. Matt should be very proud of this achievement and he says “Miley Cyrus joining our community, sharing a post, and even responding to a trivia question about herself is a highlight of the group.”

Not necessarily true. There are some shows with great character design and painstaking animation. But American kid shows at least, do have characters who never change outfits and all seem fairly similar so I get what you mean. Fun fact though, did you know that one thing that can signify good character design is if you can recognize them by just their silhouette?

There is no denying that the community is huge, and who would have thought that a college assignment could grow so big and have such an impact on Matt’s life? He said that it actually changed his life. “Mainly, I no longer felt alone in feeling stuck between two rigidly defined generations. In fact, I realized I was never alone, but it wasn't until this community gathered that I had this realization. I now have a community of like-minded individuals I can lean on during the good and the bad times that are inherent to being a 20-something.”

The creation of the group resulted in Matt finding really good friends that he met through the Born Zillennial community. “I foresee staying close with several teammates for the rest of my life!”

Another really positive change that the creation of the group brought was that it “also helped him realize his passion for connecting people and building community,” which encouraged him to apply to and secure his current job at Meta.

"This suggests that, colours can produce a higher level of attention and is effective to increase memory performance. Therefore, it can be concluded that colours have the tendency to capture better attention level, and thus, better memory." -a scientist who did not know that schools only have black and white printers. Imagine what education would be like in color!!??? So much memory.

I don't think I've ever done a test that was printed in colour.

It is actually really amazing what Matt accomplished and that it all started with just an idea for an assignment for a class in college. So many people finally feel that they found people who really understand them, their jokes and what they are going through or went through.

There was this really weird super tiny room in my house in the 90's. It was off one of the bedrooms, about the size of a walk-in closet, but it had big windows on both exterior walls and no clothes rods so obviously not a closet. Mom built a desk that left just enough room for you to get in and sit at the chair and that was our computer room.

It's just an office. I've never not had an office with a computer since about '84. My current office has 2 computers, 2 laptops, a photo printer, and a fax/copier. Pretty standard if one has to do business from home. My mom has always had an office since as has my dad. My dad and I shared an office when I was a kid but then I got my own computer so I had my own office. In retrospect, I've owned a lot of computers I guess.

Many of my friends had completely empty full apartments in their houses with just the computer placed in the middle of an equally empty living room. It was a country thing, the apartments were probably meant for the children when they had families of their own.

My cousin used to make her nail polish bubble on purpose. Like REALLY bubble. She had these massive bubbles on her polish and then she'd glop a thick layer of clear polish on top to "preserve the bubbles". Nail art back then was something else.

I used to watch movies on the PSP Vida in the back of the car with my bro and listen to Micheal Jackson on the radio with a mcdonalds toy in my lap and a handful of uneaten fries in the little paper sachet, timing when to pretend to fall asleep and get carried in the house.

Don’t bother…my experience is the larger the strawberry, the less flavor it has. I look for small deep red ones that are soft but not mushy—they’re definitely the best!

Where I live we all still have landlines, the same area code & prefix so only have to give out 4 digits and if we want to speak to folks on mobile we drive onto a mound of grass called “Cellular Hill,” which is also a communal meeting spot and a great place to have a sunset picnic overlooking the ocean.

Paramore was, once upon a time, a formidable band. When Josh and Zac left the band in 2010 after Brand New Eyes, the remaining members took the band into a TOTALLY different musical place that definitely alienated a whole bunch of listeners. I saw them when they opened for No Doubt back in the late 00'S and it was a high energy, extremely tight set. I am so glad I saw them then...before...the new material.
