Tyrannical governments, natural disasters, crime, violence, poverty—mix these ingredients and you get a hopeless society where people don't live, they just exist.

Sounds like a nightmare, right? Something we would never wish to see on Earth. However, at the same time, such a predicament is quite easy to imagine. According to the subreddit r/ABoringDystopia, that is because humanity is already moving in that direction.

This online community unites 760K members and they regularly share real-life examples to prove their point. Here are some of the recent ones that seem pretty convincing.

And one of those men (Musk) just put out his top three "fixes" for the economy, as requested by the current idiot-in-chief: raise the retirement age to 70, slash Social Security benefits, and more tax cuts for the wealthiest. But then, we all knew this was the Trump economic plan and idiots still lined up to vote for him.

Those eight guys employ or make jobs for TONS AND TONS of people!!! They aren't sitting in their bath tubs rubbing dollars all over their bodies. Most are working hard making things or building things, or providing services that EMPLOY lots of people. Thank god we HAVE smart, rich business men!!!!!!!!! Oh, and the top 1% of the poplation account for almost 50% of all the tax revenue we take in - so I'd guess they ARE paying their 'fair share', especially since the bottom 20% or more PAY NO TAXES AT ALL. Know your facts before you mouth off.

Think about this. People on welfare got stimulus checks. Why? They don't pay taxes and their income was not affected by the plandemic. People with ITIN numbers did not get a check yet they work and pay taxes. How do I know? My wife is an ITIN agent.

Before the subreddit was created in January 2016, there was a Facebook group of the same name.

The group was founded by the late philosopher Mark Fisher, the very person who originally coined the term "boring dystopia."

However, Fisher, widely known as the author of the cult classic Capitalist Realism: Is There No Alternative?, told Vice that the group "wasn't that well thought-out at the start" and that he hadn’t done anything like this before.

As a result, he closed it in November 2015. But apparently, the internet needed such a space.

And i'm sick of people talking about "back in my day" before pretending that inflation is the only factor in how pricing evolves. The US population has increased by more than 100 million people in the past 30 years. L.A's population has tripled from 4 million in 1980 to 12.5 million today, 80% of Americans live in cities, trying to cram ever more people into the same amount of space, um lets see....the housing market crash that was facilitated by the well intentioned, if short sighted belief that everyone is entitled to buy a home, regardless of whether or not they can afford it. A teacher making $30,000 a year who wants to buy a $300,000 home? Approved with a 0.9% interest rate.....and ya know all the people who did, and continue to give AirBnB money, really didn't help. Right now a 30 year mortgage for a $250,000 home has a monthly payment of $1,834...because interest rates have nearly quadrupled in the past couple of years. Stop trying to tie everything with a neat little bow.

My landlord knows someone in the courthouse. We live in Maryland. The court system is extremely corrupt. Our rent is due on the 26th of each month. If we don't pay it by the 5th, we will be in court before the 20th for eviction. She somehow gets it through the court and to the sheriff's office on the same day. It's like living under a gun. We cannot relax. Last month she filed for "without right of redemption" and tried to have us evicted before Christmas. I demanded all of the receipts printed out and she started to panic. Said the system was down. Can't even understand the paperwork at all but afraid to call and complain because she will have us out faster than we can blink. We paid rent all during covid and on time for 6 years. Now this year we have had a lot of trouble being late (2 weeks at most a few times) but since she got us into court so fast, we have about 9 court dates this year and no one in their right mind will ever rent to us again. Plus she charges over $400 a month in fees when we are late. It's a nightmare and we have no choice.

I used to live in the Vancouver area of BC. I moved away (to a super cheap and remote rural town) in 2018 - the basement suite I left behind was $780/month and that included utilities and internet. In 2024 I decided to move back to my old neighbourhood in the Vancouver area, but when I looked online I’m struggling to find a basement suites or apartments for less than $1500. Basement suites used to be cheaper than apartments, not anymore. IT’S ONLY BEEN 7 YEARS 🙄 Exhausting that our pay rises so much more slowly, eventually no one will be able to afford anything.

Right! I think Americans need to be reminded of the too big to fail bank bailout. The only thing it did was move more wealth to fewer people. Our money, directly into bank ceo pockets, and they didn't even hide it. We must have been in a coma to let that happen. I, myself remember the facts around who got what money, but it wasn't until someone talking about it last week did I actually see how calculated and diabolical that was.

And you certainly wouldn't expect as a slutty woman who deserved rape to have the father support his little crime, right? There comes a time when you have to take a stand. Report her. Doubt if she's intelligent enough to learn anything by it, because MAGGOTS are all so self-centered she'd think it was 'unfair" and mean. But just maybe you'd be protecting a neighbor. I'm sick of those people who are so 'special'. Don't make a law and then think you're above it.

The Texas Heartbeat Act, Senate Bill 8 (SB 8), is an act of the Texas Legislature that bans abortion after the detection of embryonic or fetal cardiac activity, which normally occurs after about six weeks of pregnancy. The law took effect on September 1, 2021, after the U.S. Supreme Court denied a request for emergency relief from Texas abortion providers.[1] It was the first time a state has successfully imposed a six-week abortion ban since Roe v. Wade, and the first abortion restriction to rely solely on enforcement by private individuals through civil lawsuits, rather than having state officials enforce the law with criminal or civil penalties. The act authorizes members of the public to sue anyone who performs or facilitates an illegal abortion for a minimum of $10,000 in statutory damages per abortion, plus court costs and attorneys' fees

The laws in the states are made so big developers get a bigger tax break if some of their houses are vacant. It counts as a loss. So that's why you see developments that are slow to fill, it's better.

My son and I renovated a 1920 home for him and his family to live in. The last 2 years of the reno, several inquiries came in from people (companies) wanting to buy it. One in particular wouldn't give up so I finally told him it's $500k as is or $600k finished. That finally got him to leave us alone. Funny thing is one kept asking if it could be turned into a duplex. Really dude? We just spent over $300K and 6000+ man hours turning it back into the one family home it was originally built to be because someone turned it into 5 apartments in the mid 40s.

You mean in the USA, not worldwide, I assume? (Unless you mean USA = worldwide?) Because there are landlords that earn way more homes than that, sad to say. No company or private person should be allowed to monopolize so much materialisti wealth or money in one hand.

Don't force people out of their homes at gun-point and steal all they have except for what they can carry so that a bunch of foreigners can settle in lands to which they had no right, and then expect the victims to remain passive while the foreigners attack, steal, and oppress them ever more, for decade after decade - longer than I've been alive. Israel and its supporters know that they are by far the worst villians in this story, for all that Hamas is guilty of vile crimes.

Israel isn't behaving *worse* than actual Nazis. You don't know what you're talking about if that's what you think. But Israel is behaving exactly as badly as the actual Nazis, while avoiding the worst atrocities. Wicked, yes, but not as bad as things got in the years 1939-45. A comment I heard about the true horrors from a researcher who spoke to survivors went roughly like this: "Whatever you think you know, you don't. There's always more."

They won't hit retirement age for decades. By then the 1% will own everything, education will be only for the rich, as well as health insurance. The 99% will be a slave state. Billionaires will have wiped out all retirement by crashing the stock market and housing markets intentionally to buy everything cheap off the 99% who lost everything. The goal is to make everyone homeless and poor. There will be no more social security or medicare. People who have paid off their homes the billionaires will get their goons in office and make their property taxes so high they lose their homes as well.

Looked it up, this is in steamboat springs, Colorado. I then looked up rent prices in steamboat springs and it's about $2200 for a one bedroom apartment. Conversely, financial planners recommend spending 1/3 or less of your salary on mortgage/rent. So (167000/12)*(1/3)= 4638.88... and 2200 is less than 4638, so I'd disagree that this is actually affordable to live on that salary. (And I live in Colorado and am actually trying to figure out how to apply for this job, bc where I am now rent is also about 2200/month, but I make 64k...)

According to a new survey from book publisher The Folio Society, around 26 percent of American men and 14 percent of women feel like they are already living in a dystopia.

At the same time, only one-third of Americans believe the nation has a functioning democracy, and younger people were increasingly convinced that democracy had failed in the U.S.

Americans are particularly concerned over free speech (60 percent) and government surveillance of personal and family finances (45 percent).

My company uses WhatsApp and f*****g Zuckerberg snuck AI onto WhatsApp—-and made it so it cannot be deleted or even turned off. So we’re forced to have it on our devices, with no choice in the matter. That does not sit well with me, as I do not trust something so potentially harmful that no one is even attempting to regulate.

WTF is wrong with America? Why are they so strigently anti-union? It makes life easier for everyone. Most of the time the union talks with management, representing the workers, and gets things resolved. Much easier for management than having meeting with thousands of individual workers.

17,000 Tourists Arrived Today With Cruise Ships In Santorini, A Small Greek Island. Santorini's Total Population Is 17,000 Citizens. Overtourism Is Real And It's Scary

It's estimated the island could handle at most 8000 tourist/day. Instead, they have over 17.000 on average, the overwhelming majority from cruise ships. Tourists from cruise ships are generally considered the works type of tourist for many reasons: they come in large groups, overwhelming infrastructures and tourist locations that could benefit from a more "spread out" approach; cruise tourist are the ones that spend less on site by a huge margin, bringing almost no value to local economy; they come with the huge environmental impact of the polluting ships, and require infrastructures to be scaled up to handle sewage and utilities. Santorini installed a $20/day/pax fee on cruise ship tourism, and it is apparently still not enough to cover the financial and social cost of the phenomenon.

This is being poorly managed by the island governance. I understand that they may rely on cruise ship money for their economy, and the cruise companies may hold this over them by threatening to take their passengers elsewhere, but the island council need to negotiate a better deal where they get less passengers at a time, but those that are there get a better visit.

This kinda happened ages ago in Germany: a pregnant women had a car accident and was brain dead. They wanted to use her body as an incubator until the child could be cut out of her ( I refuse to call removing a baby from a brainless, dead, kept-alive-only-by-machines body a 'birth'). IIRC, "thankfully" the fetus died before the decision could be made. Ladies - if you're pregnant talk to your partner / doctor about this possibility. Make clear what you want (either way is okay, it's your body).

This happened about 10 years ago in British Columbia. The woman experienced an aneurism and was quickly put on life support - which would have been done in any case to assess chances of survival. She was kept on life support until the earliest time that Iver could be born by c-section. Dylan Benson is the dad. As grateful as he was for Iver being alive he also had to say goodbye to his wife. I heard about a similar case in the U.S. where the baby died before it could be removed safely. I don't know what made the difference in the two situations.

If you do a source check, the suggestion was that women who donated their body to science /organ harvesting etc also could opt to be surrogates instead. So not as bad as it is made here. I would use that option. Why not? Still better then donate to the crime farms where decomposed donated bodies are studied by forensics.

This is just so dumb, it hurts. Studies have been done and it is predicted the world will max out around 9.5 billion people. That looks to be true the way population trends are going. Instead of figuring out how to have more babies in a world that isn't getting any bigger, we need an economic system that doesn't rely on growth to prosper. That is why all these rich AH are panicking. The capitalists in power seem to know this, but can't apparently fathom doing things any other way.

Fisher cast Facebook as a distorted reality following an alternate sense of time, where old news is endlessly recirculated and human nature is subject to automation. At that time, the filter bubble had already felt developed enough to rewrite reality by what companies paid for us to see. Which hasn't really changed since, either.

Because of this, in 2023 (over 6 years after Fisher's passing), the subreddit's team eventually released a statement saying it wanted to honor his stance and committed to removing social media content unless posters get approval from the moderators. It will be interesting to see how well they will manage to enforce the rule.

God, you Americans terrify me. I know it's not all of you, but I'm just using a blanket term. If someone here in England said they start their day pledging allegiance to a cardboard cut-out of Kier Stamer, I'd request to have them sectioned. Those who do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it, and the last time people started to salute the man and not the flag, there was a 6 year war that engulfed the world.

Very few wars are existential. Most are territorial incursions/disputes. We even view WW2 thru rose tinted glasses. Somehow it's thought that we fought against the Nazi ideology of discrimination and destruction of Jewish, disabled, non-white, masons, communists etc. The Nuremburg Laws came in 4 years before war was declared and no one batted an eye. The war was over territory and the crimes of the regime were discovered afterwards but make no mistake, the world was quite happy to allow the Nuremberg Laws to go ahead whilst at the same time refusing access to Jewish (and other) refugees fleeing certain death. With that behind us you'd think we'd have learned that hate is wrong. We've simply changed WHO we hate..

Profit over people? What does that even mean. If there's not profit is there a business with jobs to pay people? Where does money come from if not profit? We ll want to make a living, doesn't that mean we want to profit?

The spelling mistake was made on purpose to get clout online with this image going viral while they were undergoing a round of capital seeding. It was just a marketing stunt. The company's product is a barely functional "AI sales assistant" demo, they gathered about 11 million in capital round last September (that is chump change when it comes to venture capital). Their financials are sketchy to say the least, it's a very small company and they are entering late into a market that already have established players ten times as big.

Let’s think about this. We’ve all been in the phone loop with the Virtual Assistant. After an hour of trying to speak to someone, it hangs up on you and you have to start again. I say we get rid of the AI and Virtual Assistants and go back to people who can answer a question and help you.

BTW, it's not true and it started off as Trumpist propaganda. The LA Municipality initially passed a budget of $819,6M against previous year's $837M. This is where the misinfo stems from. What they omit on purpose is that the initial budget was preliminary, and in November the budget was raised a further $53M, for a net INCREASE of the 2024/2025 budget of about $32M over the previous year.

I've been watching Al Jazeera for over 15 years, mainly because they cover the entire world better than other news media. The things they do to Palestinians is shocking. From tearing up their food stands, stealing their homes, shooting reporters in the head then throwing their caskets on the ground because it had a Palestinian flag on it (Shireen Abu Akleh, who was an Amerian citizen as well), to smacking a child across his face and ripping his shirt off in a grocery store with his mom. Except for the experiments (who knows what's going on in the prisons, where they can be held indefinitely without charges or being able to see a lawyer), they are treating them exactly the same way the Nazis treated the Jewish. It's almost like they act like this since the same behavior happened to their people, they must inflict the same sort of terror on others. And I'm not saying all, there are IDF soldiers who fled Israel because they couldn't participate in this. It's really sad.

This is also common in the Netherlands. You pay and usually you can get a voucher for the same amount and get it back as a rebate on a purchase at the filling station shop. The toilets are usually well kept and clean with this system. If this is what keeps these toilets clean and functional than it's a win-win for me.

This is supposed to be a photo of the Libanese village of Ramyeh. Must be pointed out the photo is of dubious origin, with some claiming it's from the 1982 war, some claiming AI but for sure it lacks a definite source. What is true, though, is that Ramyeh suffered intensive and repeated bombing by the IDF, and the Israeli attacked on purpose an UN Peacekeeping outpost with tanks and rockets killing 4 and wounding 15, in what is effectively a war crime. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israeli_attack_on_Ramyah_UNIFIL_post

I went to a Jewish school in Dublin. met the president of Israel several times. Lived in a Jewish enclave, our house had mezuzahs on the door posts. Lovely Jewish neighbours on both sides. No, I don't hate Jews, but I do hate what Israel has done. How does killing thousands of children, and destroying the entire infrastructure of the area make Israel safer, less likely to be attacked? How does it calm tensions in the region so that the nation can normalise relations with its neighbours? Israel =/= Jews. Israel's actions are wrong. Hating Jews is wrong.

Misleading claim. Lab grown diamonds are not made from "burning coal". They are made from purified CO2 gas obtained mostly from desulphurized natural gas or liquid oil, fed into a a process called HPHT (High Pressure, High Temp). The main production hubs for synthetic gems are effectively India or China, and in those countries 60-70% of the electricity produced comes from coal. Not the energy specific for the diamond manufacturing: ALL the electricity. So, if we consider this claim ANYTHING made there is made "from burning coal".

The fact that a company isn’t considered successful unless it makes MORE MONEY than it did the previous year is a huge part of the problem. They need to raise their profit margins EVERY YEAR. They need to make more and more and more and more, while us regular people are still making the same wages. Companies are successful but individual people are struggling. The human species is so backwards right now.

There's only one way to know for sure.... Did they increase their prices and/or provide less for the same price? Did that coincide with record profits? Then indeed this was corporate greed. The fact that they are so bold to brag to shareholders about record profits while price gouging us AFTER getting massive tax breaks. The epitome of corporate greed!

It's not Corporate greed it's consumer greed by refusing to give Corporations more money.

Consumer greed can be the antichrist to corporate greed. I'm not crazy about that framing. It is time to get real particular about who we give our money to for goods and services. Shop local as much as possible. I think this could be a beautiful moment in time for the local business to be reborn.

Pensions have been stripped away, they give less and less benefits and health care is being stripped. When we have health care they deny the claim. Home insurance and car insurance will charge you more to recover the costs if you file a claim so you actually pay more than the cost of the original claim even though they pocketed your money for decades without a claim. Health Insurance is in the business of taking money and refusing to provide the service you paid for WHEN YOU NEED IT MOST. This a*s clown literally made everything worse (not Luigi the CEO). It is hard to believe it can get worse but he managed to make it happen. We are applauding that someone is doing ANYTHING to get this tyranny to stop. Meanwhile thousands of children are killed by gun violence and we just look away & say oh what can you do? But the second a CEO got shot they sure went into action didn't they? It won't matter because insurance company's are morally and ethically bankrupt just like the President.

This photo is cropped. The one in the Reddit thread this was scraped from includes the text, "Nikki Haley writing "Finish them" on Israeli missiles. This woman ran for president in the US." It's nit picking - but they appear to be artillery shells, not missiles or bombs. Same practical difference though.

These are not new. I've seen them here (WA state) in a local store several years ago. It's basically to a paper price sticker as an e-book is to a paper book. They can change them with a scanner / pricer tool thing. Each one has a battery in it but my understanding is because the screen is mono and static, the battery lasts a super long time.

The trouble is that they allow dynamic pricing. Half an hour before closing time, no time to go anywhere else? Jack up the prices. It starts to rain? Umbrellas marked up 50%. Ice cream marked up as soon as the temperature hits high enough. Possibilities are endless. Airlines have done this successfully for years on their websites.

These are all over Europe, displaying the price including taxes, and the last price before the current one, price per kg/100g, and country of origin. What is the problem with that?

Dynamic pricing. That they price can be changed in a second, depending on demand. Or perhaps even depending on the customer, if you get identified.
