Tyrannical governments, natural disasters, crime, violence, poverty—mix these ingredients and you get a hopeless society where people don't live, they just exist.

Sounds like a nightmare, right? Something we would never wish to see on Earth. However, at the same time, such a predicament is quite easy to imagine. According to the subreddit r/ABoringDystopia, that is because humanity is already moving in that direction.

This online community unites 760K members and they regularly share real-life examples to prove their point. Here are some of the recent ones that seem pretty convincing.

Before the subreddit was created in January 2016, there was a Facebook group of the same name.

The group was founded by the late philosopher Mark Fisher, the very person who originally coined the term "boring dystopia."

However, Fisher, widely known as the author of the cult classic Capitalist Realism: Is There No Alternative?, told Vice that the group "wasn't that well thought-out at the start" and that he hadn’t done anything like this before.

As a result, he closed it in November 2015. But apparently, the internet needed such a space.

Originally, Fisher had noticed a common theme in pictures he shared on Facebook and wondered if it could be developed into a group.

"It was understood from the start to be a consciousness-raising exercise, encouraging people to perceive the actual state of Britain rather than the PR state," he said in December 2015, a month after he shut down the group and before the inception of the subreddit. "Which is surprisingly hard, because there's this mixture of Silicon Valley ideology, PR, and advertising which distracts us from our own aesthetic poverty, and the reality of what we have. Which is just all these crap robots..."

Looked it up, this is in steamboat springs, Colorado. I then looked up rent prices in steamboat springs and it's about $2200 for a one bedroom apartment. Conversely, financial planners recommend spending 1/3 or less of your salary on mortgage/rent. So (167000/12)*(1/3)= 4638.88... and 2200 is less than 4638, so I'd disagree that this is actually affordable to live on that salary. (And I live in Colorado and am actually trying to figure out how to apply for this job, bc where I am now rent is also about 2200/month, but I make 64k...)

I don’t want anything to do with AI until it’s regulated. But companies are sneaking that s**t onto our devices. My company uses WhatsApp and f*****g Zuckerberg snuck AI onto WhatsApp—-and made it so it cannot be deleted or even turned off. So we’re forced to have it on our devices, with no choice in the matter. That does not sit well with me, as I do not trust something so potentially harmful that no one is even attempting to regulate.

It's estimated the island could handle at most 8000 tourist/day. Instead, they have over 17.000 on average, the overwhelming majority from cruise ships. Tourists from cruise ships are generally considered the works type of tourist for many reasons: they come in large groups, overwhelming infrastructures and tourist locations that could benefit from a more "spread out" approach; cruise tourist are the ones that spend less on site by a huge margin, bringing almost no value to local economy; they come with the huge environmental impact of the polluting ships, and require infrastructures to be scaled up to handle sewage and utilities. Santorini installed a $20/day/pax fee on cruise ship tourism, and it is apparently still not enough to cover the financial and social cost of the phenomenon.

Fisher cast Facebook as a distorted reality following an alternate sense of time, where old news is endlessly recirculated and human nature is subject to automation. At that time, the filter bubble had already felt developed enough to rewrite reality by what companies paid for us to see. Which hasn't really changed since, either.

Because of this, in 2023 (over 6 years after Fisher's passing), the subreddit's team eventually released a statement saying it wanted to honor his stance and committed to removing social media content unless posters get approval from the moderators. It will be interesting to see how well they will manage to enforce the rule.

The spelling mistake was made on purpose to get clout online with this image going viral while they were undergoing a round of capital seeding. It was just a marketing stunt. The company's product is a barely functional "AI sales assistant" demo, they gathered about 11 million in capital round last September (that is chump change when it comes to venture capital). Their financials are sketchy to say the least, it's a very small company and they are entering late into a market that already have established players ten times as big.

BTW, it's not true and it started off as Trumpist propaganda. The LA Municipality initially passed a budget of $819,6M against previous year's $837M. This is where the misinfo stems from. What they omit on purpose is that the initial budget was preliminary, and in November the budget was raised a further $53M, for a net INCREASE of the 2024/2025 budget of about $32M over the previous year.

In Germany this is quite a common pratice, as you usually have to pay for public restrooms. So I might have already drunk the KoolAid of this, but I don't see anything dystopian in this (well, besides that this cutout seems to be for very little children).

This is supposed to be a photo of the Libanese village of Ramyeh. Must be pointed out the photo is of dubious origin, with some claiming it's from the 1982 war, some claiming AI but for sure it lacks a definite source. What is true, though, is that Ramyeh suffered intensive and repeated bombing by the IDF, and the Israeli attacked on purpose an UN Peacekeeping outpost with tanks and rockets killing 4 and wounding 15, in what is effectively a war crime. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israeli_attack_on_Ramyah_UNIFIL_post

A big scary gun turned all those well armed 'warriors' into cowards. They let children die while they posed with their guns. Some children made the mistake of crying out for help - those Texan cops did nothing but the killer was able to hear them and murder them as a result. Never forget that Texas was fine with this. And gun extremists will tell us we need to arm the home ec lady because she'll turn into John Wick, somehow.

Misleading claim. Lab grown diamonds are not made from "burning coal". They are made from purified CO2 gas obtained mostly from desulphurized natural gas or liquid oil, fed into a a process called HPHT (High Pressure, High Temp). The main production hubs for synthetic gems are effectively India or China, and in those countries 60-70% of the electricity produced comes from coal. Not the energy specific for the diamond manufacturing: ALL the electricity. So, if we consider this claim ANYTHING made there is made "from burning coal".

Pensions have been stripped away, they give less and less benefits and health care is being stripped. When we have health care they deny the claim. Home insurance and car insurance will charge you more to recover the costs if you file a claim so you actually pay more than the cost of the original claim even though they pocketed your money for decades without a claim. Health Insurance is in the business of taking money and refusing to provide the service you paid for WHEN YOU NEED IT MOST. This a*s clown literally made everything worse (not Luigi the CEO). It is hard to believe it can get worse but he managed to make it happen. We are applauding that someone is doing ANYTHING to get this tyranny to stop. Meanwhile thousands of children are killed by gun violence and we just look away & say oh what can you do? But the second a CEO got shot they sure went into action didn't they? It won't matter because insurance company's are morally and ethically bankrupt just like the President.

This photo is cropped. The one in the Reddit thread this was scraped from includes the text, "Nikki Haley writing "Finish them" on Israeli missiles. This woman ran for president in the US." It's nit picking - but they appear to be artillery shells, not missiles or bombs. Same practical difference though.

These are not new. I've seen them here (WA state) in a local store several years ago. It's basically to a paper price sticker as an e-book is to a paper book. They can change them with a scanner / pricer tool thing. Each one has a battery in it but my understanding is because the screen is mono and static, the battery lasts a super long time.
