This Online Group Is “Showcasing The Idea That We Live In A Dystopia That Is Boring” One Post At A Time (50 Posts)
One may think a dystopia is just a trope of science fiction writing. Outlandish possibilities of human or not-so-human realities, where all that we fear becomes an inescapable fact of daily life. Again, it’s just fiction, right? Well, sometimes the present is a lot more disturbing than meets the eye.
The “Boring Dystopia” subreddit has been sharing posts that show just how broken the matrix is, or, mayhaps, the fact that one of those is just a matter of imagination, as a completely controlled environment would not allow for this much chaos. How did we end up here? Your guess is as good as mine. How do we get out is the question we need to start asking.
As you scroll through this list, make sure to upvote the worst of the worst that reality has to offer, and leave some comments below, and if you’re craving some more bitterness to further ruin your day, here is another article for you. Now let’s get into it.

If we are to consider all of the things in life that are looming over us—global warming, the housing crisis, rising inflation, wars, famine, natural disasters, overpopulation, etc.—we’ll very quickly get overwhelmed by the increasingly blank picture that the future paints for us. So we run. We look the other way.
But maybe our avoidance of the burning issues at hand is what’s caused it to get this bad in the first place. So today, let’s touch on just the tip of the iceberg of the dystopian present day we are living in. It may not seem that bad! But the more you read the posts shared by the subreddit r/boringdystopia, the more you may realize how bad we’ve let things get. And yet, it’s not even that interesting, all things considered.
This Is So Painful
They're Not Wrong
In many cases in life, dealing with problems head-on is the only way to get things to change, be it for the better or worse. After all, change is inevitable regardless of how much we want things to stay stable and undisturbed. However, there is only so much that each of us has control over, especially when it comes to problems that are far-reaching and globally concerning.
To protect ourselves from the unrelenting pressure and the constant gnawing feeling of doom, we escape. We look the other way. There are two things that coexist in the matter of escaping reality, and Michael Patanella identifies them as avoidance and dissociation. Both offer temporary relief when taken in moderation, but of course, this can get out of hand easily.
When A Dystopia With Hungry Children Is Painted As A Feel Good Story
SO TRUE!! We no longer have free lunches at our school, and it’s not cheap! (Although the lunches at our school are good)

The coping mechanisms that come with escapism can be destructive and unhealthy, even in the short term. Cheap alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, overeating, endless mind-numbing activities, and easily available credit cards that lead to holidays, mindless purchases, and debt are just a few of the ways people choose to avoid the problems they face.
As stated by Amanda Dacquel, when we avoid, we live on a repeat loop, until we hit a wall at full speed, with a poster on it that says “the real world.” Responsibilities will catch up to us in one way or another, so it’s best to use the tool of escapism in small increments to help restore our batteries rather than numbing us away from existing in the chaos that is life.
Must We Apply Whatever We've Learned?
What's The Cause?
Exactly
For those of us who are a bit too comfortable with escapism, there are ways of getting out of the continuous cycle of mindless pleasure and avoidance of responsibility. According to Patrick Allan, enforcing the “real life-right now” rule may be a good place to start. The more fun you make real life seem, the less you may feel the need to escape it.
Meeting up with your friends instead of blowing them off to play a video game, for example, is essentially substituting one positive experience for another. Just make sure the real-life thing is something you at least think you will enjoy, otherwise it could send you crawling back to escapism. Furthermore, realizing what you’re trying to escape from and why is key to grounding yourself.
Stealing Might Be The Word For It
A Big Sham
A rent payment is not a credit transaction. Try to understand the difference. The real kicker is that you might think paying off a debt would improve a persons credit worthiness ie. I borrowed money and then paid it back before I said I would. Nope, closing a credit line by paying it off lowers your credit rating. Now that is bass ackwards.
The Root Of Our Dysfunction
Let's all thank the Supreme Court and Citizens United. I'll believe "corporations are people, too" [Mitt Romney] when a corporation gets sentenced to death in Texas.
But now we enter the phase where we’ve stopped running away from the problems and come to realize what a mess life is. Can we really prevent the current-day dystopia from spreading further, ruining lives and potentially making us go extinct? According to Duncan Jefferies, the one way to stop sleepwalking towards it all is through an informed citizenry. A what?
He continues to argue that teaching critical thinking in schools and having researchers work across different disciplines so that they’re better prepared to tackle the ethical questions that will shape the 21st century, are ways to achieve this. We need more dialogue between the people working on new technologies and the policymakers who create the laws around them, as well as greater openness about the risks.
Essentially, stay informed and trust the lawmakers to do the right thing. Grand. Guess it’s time to unionize and protest against the system. Just a thought.
America Is A Joke At This Point
Someone posted a photo of their itemised maternity bill from a US hospital on another forum a while back-it included a $50 charge for "skin to skin care." Skin to skin is literally putting the naked baby onto the mother or father's bare chest. It's meant to help with temperature regulation, and is alleged to help soothe the baby immediately after birth, but its not a medical procedure. Mum picks up the baby, puts it on her chest, and the hospital charges $50 for a midwife to watch? It's utterly ludicrous. The American healthcare system is beyond a joke.
Is It Too Challenging?
Pro-Life? Nah, I Think The Right Term Is Pro-Birth
As a dystopic future looms over us and lawmakers become complacent, forgetting to look at the bigger picture, we must remain vigilant and remember that the shape of the world is in our hands. What we do matters and, truthfully, the sheer number of us doing a little every day can lead to something very substantial in a little bit of time. If there is a livable planet in the next 50 years or so that is…

1y Ago.. And What Has Changed? Shouldn’t Happen In A Developed Country
I get my diabetes medication free. After reading all this stuff, I'm so glad I was born in the UK. It's certainly not perfect, but 1000x better than living in the 'Land of the free'.
I live in a corrupt ex-communist eastern european country, and our insulin is also free. My dad had a heart attack this monday, and now is recovering after FREE Coronary angioplasty. 4% of my salary go to public health fund every month. Not everything is for free, some complicated procedures are paid, but we are well covered for the basics.
Load More Replies...In the UK, if you have diabetes, you are entitled to free prescriptions for all of your medication. This means you visit your doctor/nurse, and you are give a prescription. You then visit the pharmacy and they provide your medication. The consultation, the prescription, and the drugs are all free to the person. (It's paid for by taking a small amount of money from each person who is earning money and using it for the benefit of everyone.)
Richest country, that spends more money on healthcare per capita than any other country but has third world coverage. So universal healthcare could be cheaper and cover everyone.
Yep, they pay more TAX toward healthcare, percapita, than any other country, (except Norway) they could pay HALF their total cost and get better treatment.
Load More Replies...I am so glad I live in the UK. I'm too chronically ill and disabled to work. Not only do I get my 26 medications each month fully free (yes I know the NHS isn't free but funded by taxes but you know what I mean) all my hospital stays, all my consultants appointments and I get a living 'wage' to live comfortably in place of being able to work. I miss working so so much but am very thankful that I live in a country that recognises the struggle and supports. I just pray we don't lose the systems!
That's fine Alexandra, I'm happy my taxes are doing something useful
Load More Replies...I think he died in 2017-his death was reported in the British media at the time because there was discussion about Trump's plans for healthcare, and how the UK should be worried because our government was deliberately underfunding healthcare. There have been other diabetes related deaths since in USA where people couldn't afford insulin, a drug which can be made extremely cheaply. https://gh.bmj.com/content/3/5/e000850 The authors of this paper show that if people were charged only the production costs of insulin, depending on the type of insulin they needed, the cost for an annual supply of the drug is between $77 and $133 per year. Pharmaceutical companies are charging obscene prices.
They "reformulate" insulin every few years just so they can renew the patents and keep the prices high.
Load More Replies...This is horrifying, the cost of producing the insulin cannot come to anywhere near $1300 for one person's monthly supply.
Oh no way it's like 13 cents a vile of insulin the guy who invented it made it so cheap so everyone could have access.. isn't this infuriating. The more I read this article the angrier I'm getting. This country sucks
Load More Replies...And half the voting populous thinks this is the right way for things to be.
Someone once said that the US is great because they have the best Doctors etc. another one said „what good does it do to have the best doctors, if only 1% of the population can afford treatment by these doctors“? And I love that question.
The "richest country in the world".... Think again. USA...
Diabetic Americans should apply for a refugee status in other countries. Being denied of commonly used medical services for the reason of being poor is life-threatening discrimination.
F*****g pathetic. My wife and I pay $1500 out of pocket every month for health insurance. And we still get bills up the wazoo. The American health care system is a broken joke of a machine. The people in charge- you know, the old fart white men-should all be in f*****g prison!
We do too. Pay through the nose for insurance (United Healthcare) that pays for nothing - $100 of your doctor visit 3 times a year and they pay $10 for a prescription (we pay the rest). Cheaper by far to go without insurance, and yes, I cancelled our insurance until I find a company that actually helps with the bills. Husband managed to have a $1328 OFFICE VISIT last week. HTF???
Load More Replies..."Human insulin has an estimated production cost of US$2.28–3.37 per 1000 unit vial [22]. Allowing for 30% profit, a year’s supply for someone who takes 40 units per day should cost less than US$71 per year." ('Production costs and potential prices for biosimilars of human insulin and insulin analogues'; Dzintars Gotham, Melissa J Barber, Andrew Hill, https://gh.bmj.com/content/3/5/e000850)
And every one of those "Christian" Republicans who keep voing down healthcare for all don't care. I mean, look at Alex, does he look like any of the people who keep voting against healthcare, food, fair housing, care for Vets & 911 heroes, & . . . . This death by 'food or medicine' decision kills us. Every day in the US, people have to choose - young, old, all colors, all races, all genders!
"Land of the free" yet it costs thousands a month to live... doesn't sound very free
This is partly because the explanations for universal healthcare were twisted to appear confusing and / or misleading. A lot of our election issues are hidden inside deliberately misleading explanations. Some fools actually think they are better off today, believe it or not, not realizing tomorrow still is coming.
Yes, but all Congressional people get their care free of charge. With the GOP bumbling things, why should they care about anyone else except their rich buddies?
My income is social security alone. If I have the state pay for my Medicaid I have a $1800. deductible before anything is even partially covered. I don't earn close to that in a month. With total monthly expenses I get just enough to live on. Where do I get $1,800. from? What a joke.
Banting and Best sold the original patent for insulin for $1 so as many people as possible could get insulin quickly and cheaply. They did not get rich from it but 100 years later, Big Pharma is in the US. Yet in other countries, people are paying a fraction for the same product.
A travesty. I'm poor. I could be next. Must point out, though, US is not the richest country in the world. Look it up.
I was born and lived in the USA until I was 53, I have type 2. I Know the high cost of managing it in the USA. I moved to Sweden and was shocked and had to ask the pharmacist to repeat what she said. All diabetic medicine and supplies are free here. I even get my test strips for free. I have learned that most medicine even when paying full price is affordable.
This is why we have to fight back. We have to protest, we have to vote, we have to talk. Stop telling people their thoughts and votes do not matter, and stop telling people it's hopeless. That is what they want us to think. If we don't do something, we will leave nothing for those who come after to cling to.
That's really sad. I dont understand their medical side of things. Like people not wanting ambulances because they can't afford it or paramedics having to make sure people get brought to the right hospital for their insurance to cover costs. Jeez lads, what a serious harsh reality people in America have to live with, especially for such a wealthy country
This is utterly barbaric. How can you even have the cheek to call yourself a first world Country, America?
America, as a country, is majorly backward. Run by absolute idiots who bully and brainwash the masses into their way of "thinking". Theres a reason the average i.q. is as low as the average weight is high.
My SO insulin for a month is about 8 dollars. I don't understand why the prices in America is so high? Where I live, considered a developing country, it was really cheap, and you can buy those without prescription as well.
My anger about this is strong. This was a shameful waste of a great life. I am Canadian. :(
The sad thing is, he probably made too much money to qualify for Medicaid, the federal/state funded US insurance for people with limited incomes. Most states (46/50) cover insulin. On Medicaid, insulin is usually under $35 (USD) per month or even free. They like to vilify people on public assistance, but the way the US government works makes it so difficult for people in the lower/middle classes to function that it doesn't pay to do honest work.
What it's really sad it's that the production of insulin is really cheap. It's not a kind of drug that needs so much work and expensive ingredients and procedures to be made. So the really high cost it's just pharmaceutical companies' speculation, that make the prices so high just out of greed. With a normal cost (a cost that would give profit anyway), insulin would be affordable to everyone, even if you have to pay for it out of pocket (Edit: typo)
Insulin in Australia is subsidised by the Government and cost $6.94 per script.
So heartbreakingly sad and infuriating at the same time. This is a sin.
This happened in 2017 and I don't recall hearing about it. In 2020 the Alec Smith Insulin Affordability Act was passed in MN. An act like this shouldn't have to be named after somebody. More states (20 plus DC from what I found) have capped (or are capping) the cost of insulin. It's incredible that it's not a national act or at least much higher than 20 states. When I searched online I readily found a list of states on verywellhealth.com and pewtrusts.org. I know nothing about either of these sites so don't kill the messenger. I wanted to give a starting point for anyone who wants to read/research about this.
2020 study found that the reported average price for rapid-acting insulin in the US was $113.39 per vial, or 13 times the average in comparable countries ($8.19). Intermediate-acting insulin was $73.56 per vial, or 12 times higher than the non-US average of $5.95. Prices have only risen since then.Apr 1, 2022
The TV series "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" portrayed how Roman slave owners treated their slaves and how disgusting the ruling class was toward the lower class. It is a fictional dystopia, but America seems to be fairly close.
That is so sad! I almost died because I was misdiagnosed and wasn't prescribed insulin. Two weeks in the hospital to fix me. Diabetic Ketoacidosis is what I had, my blood was basically poising me. Doctor said I was circling the drain when I came into the ER. If I had waited another hour I would have gone into a diabetic coma and died, it was terrifying. Diabetes is no joke and insulin should be 100% free and that young man should be alive.
I my place you can get free insulin by join our universal health care and pay at least 3 USD per month.. We are just developing country with smart President
I make about $45,000 a year, pay $60 in health insurance a month and Max Out Of Pocket deductible is only $2500? Where this guy live? Texas here
I'd suggest you stay with the plan you have - and keep your job. I too live in Texas and pay $1400 a month for myself and spouse. United Healthcare pays nothing - literally! And, they laugh about what they don't cover - IF you can get hold of someone on the phone.
Load More Replies...and it only costs pennies on the dollar to make, want to talk about price gouging? they investigate it when it involves eggs but not medication
In the US, a few things I have learned... There are programs that will step in and help you if you are under insured. I opted at one point to not pay into a work sponsored plan because of my wages, I was eligible to use a clinic where office visits were $15, Labs were $15, Meds were $5 (Even for my insulin etc) and other things were on a sliding scale. If worse comes to worst, check with your dr. sometimes they can help out with free samples. and Walmart sells insulin without a prescription fairly cheaply.
He should have just robbed a bank, then the prisons would be forced to give him his medication if the police didn't kill him of course (joking/not joking)
I remember reading a story of a man basically “robbing” a bank for $1 so he could be sent to prison to receive healthcare that he desperately needed. So brutal :(

I may be wrong here, but women choose to be nuns. If you don't want to wear a nun's habit, don't become a nun. It's the woman's decision, based not only on her faith but on her life choice (as in "work uniform"). Simple. There are countries where a woman merely going outside without hijab is punished and occasionally killed. I don't see the two as being comparable. Unless the bigotry is against women, rather than religion. Plenty of places where that's the case.

As European with friends in the US it makes me sad and angry, too. And while we're still better off in Europe in terms of healthcare/support of people with low income etc, income and wealth inequality and all the problems associated with it is growing here as well. Sadly, we (or at least the politicians) are quite arrogant when it comes to the situation in the US instead of trying to implement measures that prevent further inequality so we don't go down that road. Which, I suppose, at least partly shows that many decisions here are also driven by corporate lobbyism - just a bit more covert.

Not to say that there is no suffering in this world, but 1) it shows how the world has on average improved in the last 50-100 years through joint human effort: better health, income, education, equality worldwide. 2) it shows how news outlets play with our cognitive biases eland emotions to generate clicks, and how to be more critical so you get an informed view of the world and are less impacted by your emotions. I wish all of you at least one moment of happiness today.
I've come to believe, by and large, the President is not much more than a figurehead. They can cause damage, but seem to be incapable of doing much good, with few exceptions. Power lies mostly in Congress, which means we're f****d, because we can't rely on our Congress to do anything other than serve their own self-interest.

As lots of these were about those problems of the US half the world is shaking their head about, I honestly wonder why the US is not facing a mass exodus right now.
Reading this post was disturbing & it should be. The 300 million who live in the USA are the only people who can make things better. By educating ourselves about each candidate running for political office at every level & voting for those who will make good changes. Good people have been pushed out of politics because they don't have enough money to be elected. VOTE these rich criminals out!
This post has me searching for razor blade and heading towards my tub. Sheesh. 🤦
There's an old Soviet joke with people of a bunch of different nationalities looking at a painting of Adam and Eve and saying how they must be their nationality. The punchline being "they have no clothes, no shelter, only an apple to eat, and are being told this is paradise. They must be Russian." This joke applies more and more to the US ever day.
I couldn't get through even half these posts without my blood pressure rising 10 points, and it's already a little on the high side. Time for meditation, sunflower seeds, and craft beer.

The fact that kids who can't even f*****g drive are being told that all of this is theirs to fix and we've just accepted it is b******t. I'm 13 and I'm already tired of fighting for basic human rights. I just want to be able to live, but unfortunately it's either waste my life fighting the system with nothing substantial changing or let the world destroy any life I might have. People keep saying that the kids are the future but the kids don't have a damn future
If America wanted to change they could. They are a democracy. I no longer have sympathy for a country whose citizens don't understand that taxes pay for services and that guns are dangerous to have in a society in that quantity without proper cultural controls or main stream safety training. Americans don't seem to care about mass shootings. And who gets killed, if they did laws would change. A person can live without any guns. A complete ban on firearms would positively effect society. Yet corporations control the laws now.
Yeah cause all the s****y stuff that's wrong with the world has been politicized. Deal with it
