Life, as you perhaps know, is an unfair thing, but not everyone really agrees with this. Many people believe that accepting individual problems and inconveniences, taking them for granted, is a kind of social contract, enshrined in years of human silence.

Indeed, there are a huge number of strange things in our life that we just get used to and take them for granted. However, if you look at the situation from a different angle, certain facts, traditions, things or services will turn out to be simply ridiculous or even absurd. Or, let's call a spade a spade - a total scam.

There is a thread on Reddit whose authors collect opinions about the biggest scam in life that no one wants to admit. To date, the thread has already gained more than 52.1K upvotes and gathered around 36.8K comments. Some of the comments look pretty ridiculous too, but many of them just have a kernel of truth.

Bored Panda created a special curated list of the most popular comments for you, so feel free to scroll to the very end. You will definitely agree with something, object clearly to something, and by the way, we will be glad to read comments of both kinds - after all, truth, as you know, is born in disputes.

In Australia you can pay private health insurance to cover dental and optical. Although we can get eye checks at an optometric covered under Medicare and we have a school dental scheme. The school dental scheme is $1000 of dental care/treatment per child that is covered under Medicare. This doesn't include special dentists like orthodontists etc.

I got an abscess that got so bad a couple weeks ago that I went into sepsis it was a combination of waiting for my dental insurance to kick in, (started a new job) and being ignored by an ER doc who said he thought it was overkill to give me antibiotics because it was just a tooth ache, after looking in my mouth fo a second and not even feeling where I was swollen. That s h I t almost killed me, but because it was a dental issue, it wasn't taken seriously

you can get a price break if you go to the local dental/optometrist/chiropractic college & let students work on you. Good luck. Ask if they warranty their work first.

I used to agree with this statement. Recently I took a job selling health insurance. Y'all this industry is SO HEAVILY REGULATED by the government and lawyers! Anyway, get yourself an insurance agent who you can talk to and get to know you. There ARE PLANS that cover dental, vision. And hearing, but if you have an agent who doesn't know what they are selling, you won't get those policies. You need someone who cares about your situation and the way to do that is to get an actual person as your agent. They'll get to know you and your circumstances, and they will be able to understand your needs and can help you find a policy that works for you!

Exactly Something! The servers are undeniably the victims of this. Some customers refuse to tip because “tipping is dumb” but would rather complain and stiff the server than do anything to change things, and that leaves the server working for less than a living wage and the employer AND customer off the hook for compensating the people LITERALLY SERVING THEM. TIP YOUR SERVERS PEOPLE - while we work on getting them a proper wage, we can eliminate tipping once they’re paid enough. Oh, you guys are really angry about having to tip? It’s a lot like that “if you don’t vote, you can’t complain” mentality - if you’re complaining about being expected to tip servers so they can make a living wage, but you’re not standing up or saying anything, not writing letters to your gov and restaurant owners and voting for people and policies that can change this, then you can stop going to the restaurant, stop supporting that. Unless what y’all really care about is saving a couple dollars, in which case, maybe don’t enter an establishment where you will be waited on hand and foot and where you’ll be expecting them to do that for free because grocery stores and living rooms exist too. Rant over, just tired of this argument. If you’re not going to try to fix it, don’t just nonchalantly add to the problem because you can’t be bothered to cough up $4 to the person refilling your drinks and bringing you napkins and ranch all night. It’s nice that the customer can benefit themselves by saving a couple dollars by deciding tipping is a dumb practice - that’s very helpful to the server trying to put themselves through school at the only minimum wage job they can get without an education, or the single mom, or the average Joe/Jane just trying to make life work.

So I work as a receptionist in a Spa, I do scheduling, customer service etc. etc. I make $15 per hour. The massage therapist get paid $40 to $45 per 1 hr. body massage plus tips. When they don't get a $20 tip they complain and act like it's the end of the world and call people cheap. I don't share in the tips. When I ask them to share they say I don't work hard enough. Not sure if this comment should go here, but the tipping culture is out of hand in my opinion. Thank you for reading.

Ok ok, probably going to get s**t for this but...I get it that my server does not make a living wage so tips help them supplement their income. However, as the customer how and why is it up to me to make sure your employees get decently paid? Of course asking the question isn't going to help the server pay rent or buy food, but nothing fries me more than someone in the service industry that barely does their job (or doesn't do it at all) and then demands a tip. And then ITA for not tipping. Please don't blast me and automatically assume I don't tip, because I do, but I guess I'm just trying to understand at what point tipping went from something you did to show your appreciation, to something people think they are owed because they exist? I know, boo I suck.

Well, hell. In 1965, I worked at $.75 an hour at a burger joint. No tips ... of course not! It's the stupid "table service" that restaurants "expect" tips. Any, and all services -- counter persons, retail, bus drivers, etc ... do not receive tips. In my opinion, restaurant workers distort the wage level. Your "tip" based salary unfairly benefits you. Generally, hourly workers get similar wages. For you "restaurant" workers to get "tips" is unfair for all other entail workers.

This happens in evangelical charismatic Protestantism. There are "Word of Faith" preachers who promise a 100-fold return if you will just send them donations or buy their latest DVD/CD/Study book set. So sometimes poor widows and retired people will send in this month's rent money because they are sure that somehow one hundred times that amount will suddenly and magically appear, not exactly prudent or realistic. But the evangelists do report some amazing tithe miracle testimonies every now and then. If it works at all, it works for commissioned salespeople or independent businessmen who take on significant risks. It does not work very well for anyone on salary or a fixed income like a pensioner. They never mention this.

Nothing has poisoned our society more than religion, and religious ideology. It is not a positive value to have faith in something for which there is not only no proof, but profound evidence to the contrary. Religion is a lie that trains us to believe and have faith in other liars so they can keep using us.

As written before. When the British and the Dutch sailed around the world to found new colonies. They encountered different religions everywhere. From this we can draw two conclusions: 1) Religion is so universal that it gives an evolutionary advantage to the group of believers. 2) God did not create man, the believers created their god.

It works in some circumstances to increase group survival. Remember that Yahweh told the Hebrews, as they invaded Canaan to "kill every living thing" - first recorded genocide! "However, in the cities of the nations the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes. Completely destroy them – the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivitets and Jebusites – as the Lord your God has commanded you." - Bible Deuteronomy 20:16-18 Religion no longer provides any survival advantage, save to the clergy.

of course you buy religion. It does not pay taxes and yet it sits on public lands using public resources, so every tax paying citizen is paying for it. Also, you tithe right? And the priest/s ask for money all the time? Yes, you buy it. There are whole bookstore industries selling copies upon copies of rehashes of the same lies.

Cathedrals, in the Uk at least, were built by well-paid craftsmen and labourers. The church founded and maintained hospitals, schools and alms for the poor. When Henry VIII destroyed the monasteries there was a huge wave of poverty because a nationwide welfare network had been abolished!

30 Things Which Are In Fact Big Scams, Yet Most People Don't Realize It, As Shared By Members Of This Online Group The entire wedding industry. To be clear, not marriage but weddings specifically. I’m happily married to my wife and we were content to do something special just the two of us, maybe spend a couple of grand and treat ourselves a little bit to something amazing. Cue the families getting involved and before you know it we’re spending closer to twenty grand on one day and feeding a bunch of people I’ve not heard of before or since the wedding.

The last wedding I went to was in a public park (with beautiful scenery for wedding photos). The bride and groom wore nice clothes that they already owned and had spent a couple hundred dollars on wedding rings. The guests all brought food for a pitch-in lunch instead of bringing gifts. It was the most relaxed and fun wedding I ever attended. It was also the only wedding I ever attended that was good for children because they could play games and use the playground equipment.

I have known two men who worked themselves to death for money, both relatives. Pure idolatry. What a waste. They did get extra money for all the extra 18-hour-a-day type work. This money was spent on doctors, hospital stays, and nursing homes after their immune systems failed, and they started to die, so there was no advantage in all that extra work.

I attended a local megachurch for a while this year. This was the only church I have been to in years that had an ample supply of young people, ages 12 to 22... They seemed to be buying into it all... Loud brassy music, lots of activities, and a well-staffed youth dept... They looked like they were all getting something out of it... let's hope so... maybe the fortune everyone was giving them was actually doing some good... available online but not on TV just yet... Hopefully the net long-term result will be a crop of moral adults who contribute to society

Even in the way I've seen it described (a pyramid of glasses wherein it's poured at the top), the top still has to be over-filled before it could even run down to the others and so on until it eventually reached the bottom.

This is actually how most zoos are run. All of the food is always given to the largest animal in the exhibit. When that animal has enough food it will give that food away to the other animals. Works perfectly! Unrelated, the biggest animal is also allowed to store as much food as it wants in offshore facilities and secretly in Switzerland.

I heard it compared to a stacked pyramid of champagne glasses. The glasses at the top get filled first, and the ones below only receive what wont fit in the ones above it. Better have enough champagne.

This might be valid if nobody would be emptying glasses above. As it seem now - either upper glasses are infinitely large or someone is actively drinking from them and never letting them to fill up.

A friend of a friend liked to go rock hunting with her boyfriend. She found a cool-shaped tiny piece of clear quartz (SUPER common and inexpensive) on a romantic trip that meant a lot to the both of them. The boyfriend tumbled the tiny quartz until it was perfect and shiny, and then spent some money to get a jeweller to put it onto a quality band for her so it would last. I thought that sounded way better and more personal than a diamond :)

diamonds are as common in nature as any precious stone. DeBeers did some good marketing to convince people to pay extra for diamonds. You can buy a manufactured diamond that is identical to a mined diamond chemically & all other properties for 10-20% discount. Why not? A zircon is almost identical in its physical properties to a diamond. Some rich people buy zircons & have their jeweler replace the real diamonds on the expensive jewelery they buy. The real stone goes into the safe. This way, if they lose it, or if it gets stolen, they are not out the big money they paid for the big stone.

Lab diamonds are not perfect and often smaller than naturally grown ones. Hence they are not as well suited for jewelery, but better used for less quality fixated aplications like cutting tools. Artificially diamonds simply cannot be produced to the same quality as those we find in nature, and hence their price is lower.

I know this isn't exactly what this entry is about, but on a related note, I am so ticked off at companies like Adobe, who now force you to pay a subscription if you want to use the latest versions of their various applications. Other companies have followed suit. It's disgusting, and I hope that enough open-source software is developed to counteract this and compete with these money-grabbing corporations. I'm happy to donate to open-source software developers, but I don't want to *rent* my software!

the bigger rip-off is when a worker is owed legally & morally their overtime pay. In the US, if you are carrying tools & fixing problems, the labor laws say you are owed overtime pay. Companies will get field service reps & other technicians to work on salary only. This is just plain wrong, but they won't hire you if you insist on OT pay during hiring interviews.

Salaries come with the expectation that you will work longer hours as needed, but a lot of companies conveniently ignore the "as needed" part and expect it on a weekly basis. However, isn't it funny that most employment offers (at least the ones I have seen, anyway) specify "salary of X based on a 40-hour work week". Hmmm.... 🤔 Oh, and god forbid you actually work LESS one week (although that is part the base expectation, which of course a lot of companies also conveniently ignore.

Yup. I learned this the hard way. Don't just take the salary they automatically give you! Yes, if you don't ask for more during your interview you are more likely to get the job, but they are often willing to give you significantly more. I used to say "oh money is not the reason I want to work here" and got my standard (low) salary until a co-worker told me she always asked for more than she was willing to accept, as a result she earned significantly more for the same job. I followed her advice from that moment on. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't but if you don't try and just settle you will get robbed.

30 Things Which Are In Fact Big Scams, Yet Most People Don't Realize It, As Shared By Members Of This Online Group That climate change is up to each individual to go green. It was a campaign by BP that pushed the solution as each individual going green instead of the dozen massive corporations that account for the lions share of greenhouse gases. Going green is good, but it's a drop in the bucket compared to oil companies, industrial farming, and cargo ships. Edit: lots of "yet you participate in society, curious" type comments from the usual contrarians. Your hot air is adding to the problem.

This always annoyed the heck out of me. For any given problem the advertised solution is always "you do your bit!". Except I'm usually the tiniest part of the problem, so even my hardest try will offer just a tiny fraction of a solution. We have so much plastic, shoppers shouldn't use plastic bags so let's charge them if they want their groceries packed! Or maybe grab the issue much higher and make it a law that a supermarket MUST have under x amount of plastic packaging, and even those have to comply with y rules. Then they have to tell their suppliers that from now on they can only put their sh** on the shelves if they are in proper packaging instead of cheap plastic. So me, the shopper will not be able to fill my basket with plastic covered sh**. Instead now I try to go out of my ways to use less plastic, but most of the groceries I cannot buy without or have to go to 54 stores. It's not the darn bag I put stuff into, it's the packaging around fruit, cereals, milk, everything.

To be clear I'm happy to do my bit. We have a compost pile that I love, it's a great feeling that a lot of things that would've gotten into the general rubbish can be actually used as soil again. We collect paper selectively as well, and glass, tin cans etc. But even if I'm trying, we still have a TON of plastic rubbish because often we just can't avoid it. And when it comes to packaging, most of it is not even recyclable. Even if I order from a green online store they often send the organic, "green" stuff in a lot of plastic protective packaging. I also try and buy local as much as I can, and grow a lot of our own food, not use pesticides, canning whatever I can. We have solar panels. Use more and more biodegradable cleaning products, personal hygiene products. We hardly throw any food away, or buy new clothes that we don't really need. And so on. But even if I take a million people like me, our contribution is minuscule compared to what huge steps large corporations COULD do.

I still love seeing the summits on climate change. Everyone, politician, celebrity, or otherwise arrives with their entourage. Separately. In their own planes, yachts, cars, etc. The climate would literally be better off forgoing those meetings for a remote only live stream. Yes, each person will contribute a carbon footprint but most of us can't afford to have special ice cubes choppered in on a private helicopter or jetting across the world for lunch.

Basic education is free in South Africa unless you choose a private school. Higher education is free in Germany. We should aim for both. How else do the poor dig out of poverty if they can't afford to get education in the first place??

And the belief that you HAVE to have a degree in order to make a decent living. Trade schools are vastly underrated, but we'd be sunk w/o plumbers, electricians, etc.

We're about to sink, this reply hits. Check out the average age of plumbers and electricians in this country. We're screwed unless the younger generation takes it up. No one will be able to fix anything.

School in general but college specifically was never meant for the masses. It was meant for the sons of the men to learn how to run the world while everyone else worked FOR them. Literally makes me sick. Now, college is just like every other commodity; supply and demand.

And it isn't just health insurance. It's all of it. The whole industry. You pay for months and years to be covered "just in case", then when the stuff hits the fan, they lowball the payoff at best...deny the claim at worst. Think of it this way...The insurance company is making money. If they weren't, would they be in business?

The 40 hr workweek is a scam because it isn't just 40 hours, you are expected to take your laptop home and work for several more hours each night and part of the weekend too, especially since you are salaried. If you don't you are not a "team player" and adversely affect your company and you get a poor review.

I had to laugh and smh at this one lady who actually said she loves cigarettes and how she thought tobacco companies care about the public. Why? Because they pay market research companies to conduct surveys with the public, just to get dirt on what people like to smoke, how they use tobacco, nicotine, and how often that correlates to eating junk food? That's not caring about their customers. That's finding out which demographics and consumers they can try to market their terrible products to.

The plastic in bottles is less of a problem for our drinking water since they take a long time to break down. Right now, the most is coming from clothing. Washers leach microplastics from stretchy clothing into our drinking water. One scientists interviewed on NPR said most of this could be stopped by filters on washing machines. I've always wondered how much mental illness & allergies have been caused by the microplastics mimicking hormones & affecting our neurological & other systems.

It used to make sense. Ticket master, TickeTron and the like. In my day, when cellphones were still science fiction and the internet inconceived, you had to buy tickets directly from the venue. We'd play hookey, drive to LA or San Diego, wait in line all day, then drive home with our bounty. When ticketron came to be it was a blessing to go to the local record shop and pay a few extra bucks for the convinience. Now only ticketmaster stands, and theyre the only way to buy a ticket, even though it makes no sense. Venues have their own websites now, complete with online marketplaces. Why they dont sell their own tickets directly is beyond me.

I might have to disagree with this. Sure, you don’t use everything. But higher education opens your mind to learning new things. I went in for Psych. And ended up also earning degrees in Economics and Anthropology…because I had to take one required course on both subjects. I found out I was good at history, my math skills sharpened, I have financial understanding and know when to implement it. I’m more culturally aware, understanding global politics, and have an idea of what needs to change. And a lot of what you learn “in depth” at university helps you understand things you would have never thought to learn. I just think student loans are a damn rip off.

I'll co-sign this. I'm a college prof. Not everyone is a great match for university education, which is fine. But because the human brain is still going through one of its biggests development stages during 15-25, people need education after high school to help their brains learn how to assess information, learn problem-solving, develop critical thinking skills. Whether you go on to a traditional program, or something more centered on training/technology, your brain will benefit. Just don't stop learning with high school! Almost everyone can benefit from a few classes in the humanities, or a basic biology lab, and we need more access other than traditional universities for these resources. There is a ton of great stuff online now.

It depends on the field, the skill set, and accessibility. There are countless variable to consider. Then again, I'm guessing based on your post history, dude, that if I told you something or provided data about, say, Critical Race Theory or gender performativity, despite my multiple advanced degrees in the field ("dreaming spires" and all) and years of teaching at the university level, you'd probably find a way to dismiss that, too.

For management positions (in fast food for instance)its required, and it merely means you have something those below you do not. Similar to the division between enlisted personnel and commissioned officers in the military. There comes a time when your authority may be questioned and subordinates ask "why do I have to do that?" and "because I said so." has to mean something. Without belittling higher education, it might be argued some take 16 years to learn what others might learn in 12. :-)

Having to manually do tax returns if you have nothing to declare, yes, that is a scam. Paying taxes, no. If you do not like paying taxes, please look at the dystopian nightmare that is the USA, where money is wasted on military instead of education and healthcare and infrastructure maintenance. Imagine the scenario where you can't use any roads for your car because EVERY road has a tollbooth on it from a different company that "bought" that road? That's what privatisation does. Government and its activities are covered by taxes so you have social services as a society. Don't like it? Then go move into a log cabin in the middle of nowhere. No problem.

The rest relies on self-reporting, and of course the ultra-rich try to put as much as possible into the category of "the rest," i.e. hiding taxes. Absolutely buy baby (and even child) stuff second hand. With my first I was too embarrassed to do it at first and I still regret it... now I buy about 80% second hand/hand me down (three kids). I only buy new for special occasions or when they specifically want something that I can't find second hand ,but never at full price (I wait for it to go on sale and compare prices). You can find stuff second hand in excellent condition for a third of the price or less. The whole baby/child-items industry is a huge ripoff, especially around Christmas. Buy gifts for Christmas in advance because they put on a LOT from october/november on (I used to compare prices from august-december). They do it with everything of course but especially child items go crazy.

We recycle carefully and diligently, and I don’t know why we bother. We live in an apartment, and most of our neighbors don’t have any idea what can and can be recycled. They’ll throw any kind glass, metal, plastic and styrofoam into the bin, when there are regular full-color, clearly illustrated mailers delivered and full-color images on the bins themselves. Contaminate enough of the recycling, and it all goes to the landfill. This is why China stopped taking American recycling. It was supposed to be something like 2% contaminated by volume, but averaged 20-30%. It’s infuriating because it is not hard. No plastic bags of any kind. Plastic and glass bottles, but no caps. Simple things that my fellow liberal and environment loving neighbors just won’t do. Maddening! I don’t even know if there is any attempt by our local service to actually recycle anymore, or if it goes straight to the landfill. Look up “aspirational recycling” to be very frustrated by well meaning people.

Since China isn't taking anymore "recyclables" from the U.S. it's going to be interesting to see what happens with all of it in the near future. Probably existing landfills are going to reach capacity rather quickly.

I live in an apartment in the Dallas area of Texas. All we have is the big dumpsters. There's no option for recycling or composting. The only drive-up recycling is a town away and you can turn in a 55-gallon bag of cans for a whole quarter $0.25, which doesn't even cover the gas to drive over there. Not worth it at all

I wish that, even if it's not feasible to recycle now, that states would at least promote dumping them in separate pits so that future generations could "mine" those resources and re-use them then.

30 Things Which Are In Fact Big Scams, Yet Most People Don't Realize It, As Shared By Members Of This Online Group The fact that airlines have X amount of seats per flight, but almost always sell X+10 seats and then refund you about 80% of your ticket cost. Do that to the 10 people and suddenly you have about 2 tickets worth of profits seemingly out of nowhere, and everyone still has a flight. Just an unbelievably immoral way to gain a few bucks, but everyone just goes with it since the airplanes aren't exactly a train that comes every 10 minutes.

About a month after I bought plane tickets I got a message that they had to change my flights. My new return flight was a day later. I asked if they could change it back to the day prior as planned - these tickets were a good 9 months in advance so I know they had seats. They told me yea, they could change back - and the difference in ticket price is $750 please. I argued for a day and finally heard back sorry that was a mistake, it’s only $375 more. I said no - and they finally agreed to change my flight back to the original day free of (additional) charge.

The airlines charge more money for less stops in your flight. Then, when you book a cheaper flight with one or more stops at their terminals around the world, they profit more when you spend at concessions in their terminal.

I have never heard of it working like this and it would obviously be illegal in any sensible country. Some airlines do overbook but it's because they assume that a certain percentage of people don't turn up. If they do end up with too many people, they usually offer considerably more than the ticket price to convince you to take a different flight.

The one I Never, Ever see, is UTILITIES. It's almost like people are AFRAID to speak out against the Robber Barons. What's the one thing EVERYBODY complains about? The Power Bill! Every month. Every Month. Every Month. Pay up or live in dark cold/dark suffocating heat/have no WATER or no way to prepare food. They raise the price when THEY want, will reach into your "smart" device to regulate temps when THEY want, but REFUSE to spend all that money providing SAFE and RELIABLE service to so many places. They RUN OUR LIVES, because "keeping the lights on" is paramount to survival under a roof. But we just go along.

You guys have wrong thinking. You "hustle" to improve yourself. Not to make the owner of the business where you work rich. Always setting goals and working to achieve them. Want a batter life? Hustle to improve your skills and knowledge so that you can get a better career. Work hard on yourself, not for someone else.

too bad some people's idea of progress always involves confiscatory taxes, surrender of rights, and excessive governmental control of everything. This includes your government spying on you while looking at blogs like this, and then they lie about it. If you leave your pc microphone attached or if you have a pc video cam, they can turn them on and monitor you without anything switching on to notify you of the fact. Big Brother is definitely watching.

Let's just gloss over the fact that restaurants need to pay things like rent, taxes, utilities, equipment maintenance, insurance, and (in a perfect world) PAY THEIR EMPLOYEES A LIVABLE WAGE with insurance, PTO etc etc etc. (Don't get me started on chains where corporate and upper management get involved and grossly inflated salaries get added to the mix.) It's no wonder restaurant workers are so underpaid and forced to live on tips. If you only want to pay for ingredients, I kindly suggest buying some groceries and cooking at home. (Disclaimer: I have never worked in the food industry and am only sharing what I've heard. Any corrections by actual food industry workers is greatly appreciated)

Firstly, you know the price before you order. Secondly, most restaurants run on tiny margins. That salad on the plate; the ingredients have to be sourced, prepared, presented and delivered to the table. The table has to be cleared and cleaned. The plate has to be washed at high temperatures and put away. Time and salaries and hidden costs.

My parents would take my cash and keep it in a lockbox. Truly I could have it whenever I wanted but I always had to tell what I wanted it for. At 17 I had to steal my moms keys and lie about it when I got caught - all because I wanted to get on birth control. I had health insurance but they send a statement explaining your medical visit - so I had to go to a clinic and pay $140 out of pocket for an exam and prescription. My friends mom gave me a ride - I had to lie to her too because she only agreed if I said I was 18.
