My dad built a very ugly and badly functioning grill and he also can't cook. So everytime I visit my parents at summer my dad grills some sausages that are half burned, half cold and taste like the charcoal lighter fluid. :D So there has to be some sort of 'magic' why most dads needs to grill.

Because it is a typical dad thing, so they might feel that if they fail, they would also fail at being a dad.

The simple answer to that is "because they are dads" which means they have children. Children are very choosy about their food, so it has to be cooked perfectly and responsibly. Also, most wives won't be bothered to get themselves and their clothes and hair smoked, so it becomes the dad's job to fulfill. And finally it's an activity that calms you, let's you drink along with the cooking and makes you feel a family hero afterwards. Guess someone has to become a dad to understand that.
