This is such a beautiful moment. After my dog eats his dinner, he always runs over to me and puts his head on my face and gives me loves and kisses. I believe it's his way of saying thank you for the food. This pic reminds me of that.

To find out more about what it is like to devote yourself to animals and become a veterinarian, Bored Panda talked to Ivan Zak, a doctor of veterinary medicine and the CEO of Veterinary Integration Solutions. Ivan practiced veterinary medicine for 12 years, until experiencing a severe burnout. It led him to explore the psychological triggers of burnout and business methodologies that veterinary organizations can apply to work against them. Researching this topic, Ivan obtained an MBA degree in International Healthcare Management.
Today, Ivan is leading Veterinary Integration Solutions (VIS), a business consulting company helping veterinary groups implement an operating framework for sustainable integration of practices and ultimately empowering the healthcare team to live their passion.
“Being a veterinarian, no day is the same,” Ivan said when asked what it is like being a vet. It turns out, not everything is picture perfect and there are many challenges that come with the profession. “There is a lot of stress, unpredictability, and long hours. A less obvious and frustrating challenge is accepting that not every pet owner will be able (or willing) to do everything for their animal.”

I couldn't be a vet. All the patients would end up at my house. Animals are always just so damned happy to see you. When I get to see a certain dog while I'm out walking it makes everything right in the world. Left him a big box of milk bones at Christmas and signed it "from your biggest fan". This crew would bring live into any spot they visit.

Moreover, “Veterinary care can be expensive when you don’t have pet insurance, and veterinarians often find themselves in moral dilemmas when they can’t do what’s best for the animals because their clients can’t afford it,” he said and added that that’s probably one of the toughest aspects of the profession.
“The most rewarding part that makes up for all of it is being able to apply your skills and experience to get to the bottom of a problem and diagnose a patient. An animal can’t tell you where it hurts, so connecting and being able to help is one of the most fulfilling parts of being a veterinarian.”

Poor doggo. I keep seeing more videos of pets getting high. Many pet owners are careless with their stash while some just give the dogs for fun. Both wrong on all levels.
For anyone considering becoming a veterinarian, Ivan reminds them that “it’s a long and challenging path with many milestones to work toward: a bachelor’s degree, veterinary school admission, a veterinary degree—perhaps specialty certification. These are clear objectives that help maintain focus, so don’t lose that North Star once you get your license and go into practice.”
Moreover, he suggests setting goals, writing them down and reviewing them regularly. “If you don’t set new goals, the motivation and passion that initially brought you into the profession will quickly fade away in the daily routines,” he explained.
Another tip from Ivan is “to develop soft skills: communication, problem-solving, positivity. A day as a veterinarian can be very stressful, and you will really need that dexterity dealing with clients when they are frustrated. Most veterinarians choose their profession because they want to help animals, but talking to pet parents is a big part of it, too.”

As a GSD raiser, those aren’t ears, they’re “trouble detecting radar dishes”. If the ears point left, there’s trouble detected to the left. If they point right, there’s trouble detected to the right. If they point ahead, trouble is about to commence. If they’re wobbling, trouble is in progress!
The CEO of VIS also warned that veterinary schools are extremely demanding, which means they “often leave no time for personal life. While it’s something you just need to get through, don’t take that mindset into your work life because it’s a straight road to burnout.” For this reason, “You must learn to set personal boundaries and say ‘No.’ Learn to take good care of yourself and your emotional wellbeing,” he added.
Turns out, burnout is something Ivan refers to as “a chronic illness of the veterinary profession.” He explained: “Veterinary schools do a great job teaching medicine, but they often overlook mindfulness coaching, as well as courses on self-care, self-motivation, and work-life balance.”
This lack of work-life balance is named the top reason that practicing vets say they might leave the field, said Ivan. “So, avoid institutions that do not understand the importance of work-life balance and dictate an unreasonable work situation,” he concluded.

Zoos take animals to veterinarians all the time. If you are able to watch old episodes of The Zoo from animal planet it's amazing! Especially the ones at the Bronx Zoo. Some episodes are too sad for me but most are so cool!

We also spoke to Jean Joaquim, a Brazil-based 45-year-old veterinarian with a long family history of veterinarians. “Maybe veterinary medicine was in my blood already,” he wondered. After co-creating the Bioethicus Institute that received international recognition, Jean now specializes in rehabilitation and complementary medicine.“Here we deal with complicated situations with the owner and animals, because most of them have disabilities. This situation led me to build very personal relationships with the owners,” he explained.
When asked about the biggest challenges Jean has to face being a vet, he said it’s dealing with “death and cases of severe diseases where animals succumb despite every effort and treatment.” "Sometimes the pressure from owners because of safety procedures is also a heavy duty to deal with,” he added and noted that risks are an inherent part of medical treatment.

Goats are the absolute best. When I was a kid and went to pick up my (sure "our family's", no mine) goat, he just sat on my lap and put his little head on my arms. Such a cuddle bug. Silly little dude followed me all around.

On the other hand, Jean said it’s extremely rewarding seeing his furry patients defeat a disease, to be able to walk and live healthily again. Sometimes “even the owner doesn’t realize how tough the treatment was and how life was at risk,” Jean said. Besides treating animals, teaching others veterinary medicine is also something Jean enjoys a lot, as he says “it is very rewarding when you can teach something useful to a vet student.”
For all the young people considering studying veterinary medicine, Jean reminds them that this “journey is forever and you cannot stop studying all of a sudden. “But the pleasure of being so close to our furry little brothers and sisters of this planet is something hard to describe.”
“Night shifts, pay, time, all these are problems that are also common in other jobs, but it's worth it when you get rewarded back in barks, meows, licks, and mooing, which are priceless,” Jean concluded.

THAT is super rare indeed ! For those of you wondering why : the gene combination leading to a calicot cat is normally lethal for male embryos. That's why you can be sure a calicot cat is, upon ultra rare exception as this lovely kitten, a female.

The combination is XXY, the colouring can only be done with two X chromosomes as it's sex chromosome linked. It's not fatal a combination in and of itself if allowed to develop, just that the body typically destroys the errored gametes prior to fertilisation given that it an error and results in sterility.

The only 'male' calico cat I've ever seen was taken to the vet to be neutered, and proved to have both male and female genitalia. The vet kindly offered to do both spay and neuter the cat for the price of a spay.

I've noticed that orange tabby females that ARE fertile are becoming more common. Orange tabbies are generally males just like calicos and tortoiseshell ("torties") are generally female.

My family had a skunk as a pet when I was young. At that time, in our state, you could have a vet remove their a**l scent glands. Her name was Chanel No 5. She was so sweet! She played with our other pets and also used the little box like a cat.

Aww, we used to have a kitty that roll around, lie on his back in your hands, and just loll his head back like that. You had to be careful with him when he got cuddly. He was the slowest, clumsiest cat I've ever seen and he'd fall right off your lap if you didn't take care to keep him from doing so.

I think the 'poor cub' is very groggy following a vaccination or some other grogginess-inducing procedure (note the two shaved patches on the forelimbs, generally where injections are given).

I bet he's a great boy! Dogs are wonderful characters. But his 'handsome' look is a collection of medical problems deliberately bred into him by cruel people. Will thoughtless and sometimes shallow people stop wanting these 'looks'. It's only when the market dries up that these evil breeders will stop! I know this may get a lot of negative feedback but it's nevertheless the truth. PS I'm surprised at veterinary establishments in a sense promoting breeds with these problems.

If you want to look at one of the major sources of why these looks are acceptable, just look at the AKC. The dogs the AKC pick to be winners at their competitions are the example breeders follow. And, sometimes, the breeders exaggerate the looks even further, thinking that’s what people want, in spite of the fact how devastating it is to the dogs’ well-being.

Opossum. Only marsupial in North America. Fantastic wild animal. Eats pests like ticks and snails, don't carry rabies. The best!

A few snippets of paper on the floor isn't a MRSP outbreak waiting to happen. You don't know if the floor tiles are meant to look like this because they are nonskid. Those tiles won't shine even when they are cleaned with pure lysol.

My parents dog does that! It feels great when it’s been a month since you saw him and his whole body starts to wag and he gets that silly dog smile on his face. He also does it for good and walks. :) so glad I get to see them next week.

My dog got into pot somehow. I think He ate part of an edible in a walk, even a few crumbs. I don't smoke or have edibles so I was quite shocked. You don't know every story. I was terrified and and crying and I still to this day don't know for sure how he infested THC.

For pups that don’t go to the vet as often as others, they may fake limping just to get more attention if they feel bored. My girl used to do that when she was little. Limp up to me so I’d pick her up and check her leg. Then when I found nothing wrong I’d put her back down and she’d go play with her brother

Reptiles have a different chemical that they release than mammals that does the same thing as serotonin - which mammal pets release when with their owners. Current testing does show that they release it around their owners, as well as retreat to their owners if scared, so it is likely that they do.

I'm known as 'the cloths basket cat lady'. Sora is white and she gets car sick. I put her in a carrier once, never again. I layer 4 towels so she can puke, pee, and poop. The only thing I have to wash is the towels and I layer them so after she's done whichever 'P' it is I can toss it in a bag in my trunk so she stays clean. She's harness trained so she just chills in the basket with a throw over the top and I just carry her in. The harness just in case she jumps out which she hasn't in the almost 7 years she's been going to the vet. She's got a lot of health issues so my lime green cloths basket is a pretty memorable thing.
