Ukraine, a democracy of 44 million people, continues to experience a devastating attack. As the world uneasily watches the 8th day of the Russian invasion, people and nations are uniting like never before, sending support and condemning this unjustified war.
Sitting in the heart of Europe, Ukraine celebrated its 30 years of independence last year. While it may seem like a young state, it has a thousand-year history. Throughout this period, it has formed a powerful and resilient nation. Citizens there developed a strong sense of national identity, showing devotion and love to its culture, traditions, architecture, communities, and beyond.
Today, brave defenders are fighting for the future of this country, and we want to showcase all of Ukraine’s unique beauty. That’s why Bored Panda scoured the internet and collected some of the most gorgeous and breathtaking pictures that capture what an incredible land it really is. Church Of St. Nicholas On The Water
We reached out to Alina Kisina, a Ukrainian-born photographer, artist, curator, and advocate for creativity working in the UK. In her work, she tries to find harmony in chaos through universal human qualities that reach beyond location, gender and social background. "I'm heartbroken and worried sick about everyone in Ukraine, not just my parents, childhood friends, and creative partners," she told Bored Panda.
"Putting the complex history, political dynamic and conspiracy theories to one side for a minute, I'm simply in pain for all those human beings who, just like most of us, were peacefully going about their daily life, working, raising children, creating something, saving for a vacation and now suddenly have to hide in a bomb shelter, flee and fight for their country and its basic freedoms," Alina said.
"I feel their fear and devastation, but also their courage and determination. And although I share the optimism, it's still going to be messy and tragic, and the cost will be not only human life today, but resentment and hatred for generations to come."

Alina moved to the UK when she was 19 and since then has created her home there. However, she revealed that Ukraine is a place of great inspiration and creative freedom she connects to every time she’s there. "It has its own fresh creative energy, irresistible buzz, and infectious ambition oozing out of so many passionate people who manage to do truly great things in art, culture, and education with very limited resources," she added.
"Ukraine is a beautiful country with its tremendous history and stunning natural reserves. I have a soft spot for Ukraine's many rivers, especially those that flow through cities like Kyiv, Dnipro, and Uzhgorod."
The artist recounted that her special place of respite is "a tiny village in the middle of nowhere in the picturesque Carpathian Mountains in Zakarpattia — a perfect hidden place to recharge and enjoy the simple life in serenity."

Ukraine’s nature, architecture, and landscapes are truly breathtaking, and its culture is strong in many traditions: music, art, cuisine, and more. The country has deep customs, wealthy talent, and a long cultural legacy. People there are known for their soft and generous hospitality, even when they’re facing the most difficult times in their lives.
According to Alina, Ukraine's culture is rich, colorful, and vibrant. "I'm a big fan of Ukrainian folk music with all its playfulness and cheer but also beautiful soulful sadness — both translate into the contemporary music scene beautifully."

Today, people all over the world feel inspired by the brave defenders fighting on the streets and outskirts of the attacked cities. The Ukrainian flag is everywhere — waved in the air by thousands marching in protests, draped from the balconies in both big and small cities, attached as pins to the jackets of everyone showing support. People are ready to help, showing great faith in the future of this land.

"My sincere hope is that Ukraine will successfully send Putin back home and avoid further human losses, let alone a potential nightmare of this war turning into a full-blown global conflict," Alina told us.
She wishes that Ukraine "will have a chance to recover from the shock and trauma of what for many is simply a betrayal. That the country will find the strength to transcend this devastating experience and turn it into a powerful source of togetherness, wisdom and the greatness they bring. That their new cultural identity will help build a new present and a new future, allowing the country's creativity to flourish and make this world a better and more beautiful place."

"Like any war, even the best of possible scenarios will bring a lot of tragic consequences. Instead of strengthening cultural links and understanding between people, it will multiply separation and hatred which will take decades to undo."
Alina concluded by saying that "too many people on either side of this war had no interest in it, yet they will pay the price. Perhaps it's too early to think about it but I'm already asking myself: what will it take and what can we do to not only repair the damage and bring healing but also make sure it doesn't happen again?"
"Keep In Touch". Popasna, Donbass, Ukraine
When I asked the kids what was the meaning of this painting, they mostly answered that it spoke about love.
In Popasna, the war divides people, not only geographically but also in their convictions. This wall is a tribute to the children of Popasna who manage to stay together despite the adults' madness.
I can’t think of how many children witness the tragic events. I hope they all managed to escape and being ok

For those who don’t know Holodomor was genocide, perpetrated by the Soviet government, upon Ukraine. Millions starved to death. The photographs of it are some of the most heart wrenching images you could ever see.
If you have Hulu, watch the movie Mr. Jones. Very difficult to watch but it will explain what happened. Stalin also gathered and thus killed another 6,000 people. Cannibal Island on Amazon. No wonder the Ukranian people don't want any part of Mother Russia.

The first thing that appeared to my eyes after reaching Odessa. I remember the respect I felt when I looked at this building after leaving the train at 5 a.m., which took me through half of Ukraine. I realized that I am at the other end of Europe, I am surrounded by different realities and a culture different from the one I know every day.

Visiting Kyiv For The First Time Ever. Your Country Is More Beautiful Than I Ever Could Have Imagined
This Is A Photo I Took At 5:30 AM In Kyiv
I must admit that I never really thought about Ukraine before the invasion. And I am deeply embarrassed now, that country is STUNNING! Why did I not know that? I want to apologize to all Ukrainians for my ignorance. I really hope that I can visit one day when the war is over.
Me either; it really does looks stunning! I will add it to my bucket list and pray the war is over really soon
Load More Replies...The photos are beautiful yet heartbreaking. Such a beautiful place. So colorful, and so much character. Its disgusting that such a glorious, charming, and delightful place now looms in the darkness because of Putin. Prayers that this beautiful country will have peace and beauty restored soon.

A beautiful country and I fear what Putin is doing to it. How much of this Stunning Country will survive this brutality?
I did not really know ukraine before the build up at it's borders. What a beautiful Country. How can Putin destroy such beauty and the wonderful people of Ukraine. I do not understand how one can be so hateful. Ukraine and it's people are in my prayers. We must stand with them and let them know they are not alone.
Thank you for these beautiful photos. Ukraine is beautiful. I hope all of these beautiful architectural sites aren’t destroyed by the Russians.

Thank you so much for sharing these beautiful pictures of Ukraine. So absolutely amazing and to think much of it will be gone, especially the brave people of Ukraine. May the free world come together and stop Putin now.
What a beautiful City! I knew nothing about Ukraine before the ugly event that is the war going on and that the whole world is watching. I pray for you that he war comes to an end and that the Ukrainian people can live their life in peace and freedom!
Words do not express how I feel when I see these gorgeous pictures, it takes my breath away. I can only hope this ends soon before such amazing architecture and nature is destroyed. And the people are kept safe.
A great story and beautiful pictures of the Ukraine and the Ukraine people.
I'm with Jihana, I have travelled somewhat , however never considered Ukraine! I am so sad I missed this beautiful country, with amazing buildings and history. I pray Putin leaves asap. God Bless Ukraine!
The Ukrainians brought art and beauty to this land. Their neighbor is sending bombs. I never wanted to visit Moscow, and now I think Kiev may be good medicine for my soul.
BEAUTIFUL... Architecture designed by playful & friendly minds! I always thought the Ukraine was archaic, without even looking...I feel like a fool for those thoughts now..... This beats ANYTHING I have seen in North America, where their goal is "filling their pockets with cash"... so they make cheap, ugly buildings.... Lets just hope that idiot Bidin doesn't try to bomb it? I would suspect a HUGE backlash on the North American Continent.
Second what Jihana has said. Never realised that the country was so beautiful. Please let's end this mayhem and live in peace. Too many people are being displaced.
why would a leader of the russian country destroy all that is beautiful in the ukraine ? because he has been in indocturine in the kgb and he is ruthless without feeling for his fellow man.
Breaks my heart to know what Putin and his comrades are doing to such a fantastic country. Have faith dear Ukrainians, the world supports and loves you!
Any lives taken in this massacre or slaughter, I can't call it a war, is a crime. Lives cannot be replaced and cause too much suffering to bear. If these beautiful, irreplaceable pieces of architecture, churches, Metro are destroyed, it is a very sad day. Lynn R.
Sure makes me want to go visit, before the AH Putin started to destroy all this beauty. Wish I had seen these ealier.
Will modern European and Western leaders hang their heads in shame as Neville Chamberlin may have done? Afraid of what Putin COULD do, he is allowed to commit genocide and Urkaine is sacrificed as other nations cheer the hero Zelensky, but offer aid too late. Complicit we are, because of our ignorance and self preservation. We can only hope that some good will come of this immense sacrifice. May we be forgiven for all the lives lost in this beautiful country. As in Africa, Crimea, Afghanistan, the children suffer the most. My heart breaks ....
Beautiful country with terrific artists. I believe this destruction is due to Putin's jealousy of a country that loves itself and shows it. Ukraine will rise again like flowers in Spring.
Sadly, if Putin has anything to say about it he will continue to destroy everything he can.
I never thought that Ukraine was this beautiful all of the photos that I saw are all fantastic & heart breaking & beautiful. I am praying for Ukraine that the war will soon be over. God bless you all.
I am embarrassed for all Canadians that we..this country of ours.. our Government & Prime Minister have abandoned the people of Ukraine because we are afraid of this Monster Putin & fear what he might do to us. If he is not stopped then he will change the world forever. Our children & their children will live in a world where any bully nation can illegally invade a weaker nation & erase & demolish its people & country by bombing even its hospitals & schools. All nations should be ashamed that this is being allowed to happen without us intervening & stopping Putin...even if the risk is a nuclear war with Russia. President Zelensky was right when he mentioned that the blood of his people is on our hands in the west for failing to respond with more than sanctions which allow this Sadistic Monster Putin to continue his genocidal war. I guess when the world said "Never again" with regard to the Jewish Holocaust they didn't mean it. "Again" is here now ..will we have the courage to act.
