Meet Theresa Kachindamoto
This is such an amazing accomplishment that in a perfect world would have never had to happen. Bless up Theresa Kachindamoto!
She is the type of woman young girls, make that ALL girls and women should be looking up to. Not celebrities.
And this is the first time I've seen her name in the post not the comments under it. Congratulations Theresa on graduating from 'Malawi woman' or 'Female Malawi Chief' to having an actual name!
Including the USA. Using religion as an excuse to continue with child marriages is unacceptable.
Load More Replies...A truly remarkable woman! I had never heard about her before reading this, so I read up about her on the internet. She advocates for child education up until college age for both girls and boys, and has annulled to-date several thousand child marriages in her district, also for both girls and boys. She has also been instrumental in banning sexual initiation rites which basically force girls as young as 7 years old(!) to have sexual relations with older men... This sick practice also exposes the young girls to the risk of contractinq HIV/AIDS! My favorite quote from her sayings: "Educate a girl and you educate the whole area ... You educate the world"

These pictures might seem trivial, but taking a break from the negativity around us can do a lot of good to our mental well-being.
According to Austin Perlmutter, M.D., who is a board-certified internal medicine physician and focuses on helping others to improve decision-making and quality of life, it doesn't take many news reports to end up believing that the world is rapidly descending into disaster and chaos, even though many aspects of life have improved dramatically over the last few decades.
"Exposure to consistent, sensationalized pessimism and negativity has become the norm for those keeping up with the news," Perlmutter wrote.

I don't think it's sacrificing. It's called being a good person
I wouldn't call it a sacrifice. I'd call it heartfelt generosity to moms and kids who have a right to not just a roof over their heads, but a home. He has his priorities straight. He doesn't need the money. These families deserve a home. I don't think he considered it a sacrifice.
He donated millions of dollars - not a sacrifice. Bliss & Blessings!

To people saying that 10 C isn't cold please note that many of the accounts of the earthquake state that victims of the quake were forced to stay in tents outside and were not used to the colder weather. Many were forced to build fires to stay warm overnight. Also, when you’re searching for survivors buried under piles if rubble, it’s going to get pretty darn cold underground.
10C can be pretty cold if you're in an area with high humidity, or if you're wet. I've been in New Orleans when the temp was that low at night & it felt pretty damned cold to me!

He did not flee Europe. He travelled a lot to teach and lecture and after the Nazis came into power, he did not return to Germany. God, I love that quote. Very profound. Sadly, so many Americans today would simply write him off as "virtue signaling" and dismiss him as a "SJW". Ego and not wanting to be wrong has replaced listening and learning from those wiser and more experienced. Bless him for this.
This is exactly in line with the idea that smart people don't go around saying they're smart. I've met some seriously intelligent people like a quantum physicist from MIT. She never once claimed to be smart nor did she put down anyone else for not understanding. I never counted myself in her league. I felt like a dullard around her but when I went to ask her questions she tried to build up my confidence. That's truly smart. I think Albert would have called her a colleague.

When a newspaper erroneously reported that Takako Doi was running for parliament, she told the local mayor that it was a mistake and she wasn't actually running. When he replied something to the effect: "Well, of course you're not running! You're a woman! No one will vote for you!", she changed her mind and ran anyway and won. She served from 1980 to 2005 and was the first female speaker of the lower house of parliament. "She was big, loud and pushy to start with," said one of Doi's law professors in an August 1989 Time magazine article. "I knew from the first day she came into my office that she would make a fine politician."
According to wikipedia, she served 1 year in office, which was uneventful (she gave birth a part way through her term which may or may not have reduced the amount of time she served). Apparently she didn't stint from taking charge in meetings. I'll take "uneventful" over the normal "scandal ridden" any day.

The doctor provided three specific cognitive biases that are activated by negative news to keep us unhappy and advice on how to start making changes to break the cycle:
1. Negativity bias doesn't allow us to turn off negative news.
"Negativity bias refers to the fact that humans focus on negative events, information, or emotions more than their positive counterparts. In more dangerous times, this bias may have provided an evolutionary benefit (e.g., we were more likely to notice potential threats to our safety). But in the modern world, our preference for the negative has been harnessed to keep our attention," Perlmutter said.
This helps explain why the news consistently emphasizes stories on the worst things happening in the world, both globally (wars) and locally (robberies). "Not only are we seeking out the negative, but media outlets are actively trying to give us more of it. It’s a double dose."

Load More Replies...This is wonderful and just want to share a PSA. People don’t “commit suicide”—they die by suicide. “Commit suicide” became the verbiage because suicide was seen as a crime—but it isn’t—it’s the end product of a horrible and ravaging disease—mental illness.
As a person with depression, I'd like to share my thoughts on your comment. Dying by suicide doesn't sound right because it sounds like you die from a natural cause, something that seems less emphasized than it should be. It sounds like someone just died due to something, and not died fighting something. Commit suicide is just a general phrase, although if you want to make a point about that, then I understand your point of view that it shouldn't sound like a crime. You are right that that it is the end product of something terrible, but if you are going to be that specific about it, let me bring to your attention that personally(I dont know about other depressed/suicidal people's opinions since every battle is different) do not like how people refer to it as an illness or disease. I am not sick, I am in need of help, just like a person who goes to after school extra help would not be dumb, but in need of guidance. >>>

Even after someone has died no one outside of the organisation will ever know that they even called, let alone what was discussed (imagine how many suicidal people wouldn't call otherwise). Numbers literally cannot be traced even by staff. No one can or will pass on details to any other service. The listeners do not judge, do not give opinions, nor advice. Instead they are trained to listen and to ask the sort of questions that help a person pick through and sort their own turmoil of feelings. Callers do not have to be suicidal either. Anything that they feel they can't talk to friends or family about is a good enough reason to call The Samaritans. Or text or email or write a letter to. They are an amazing organisation.

Couple With Down Syndrome Told Not To Marry, Prove Critics Wrong 25 Years Later
I could sort of understand worries about them having children. (Not necessarily agree but would see a point.) Or not to live on their own without help. (Same as before, could see a point in an argument like that.) But not to marry? Who are they hurting? Who are they taking anything away from? Hope they'll have many more happy years!
I think I've read somewhere that people with dawn Syndrome are more likely to have severely disabled children.... can't remember where I've read it tough. If it is true, then that would be a good reason to not be allowed to have kids, much like it is forbidden for siblings and sometimes cousins. But marriage is something else entirely. Those no sayers should mind their own business.

2. Due to availability bias, after we see negativity, we overestimate its significance.
"Availability bias (also called the availability heuristic) is the tendency for people to overestimate the importance of the examples that immediately come to mind when considering a topic," Perlmutter said. "These examples are, of course, influenced by whatever you were most recently paying attention to, as well as the things you pay attention to the most."
"So if you just watched a news report on local robberies, and then were asked about problems in your town, you might say that robberies were a major issue, even if they were, in general, very uncommon. If you’re constantly watching negative news, the availability bias means your brain may be more likely to remember horrible events and then believe that these relatively infrequent occurrences actually represent the general state of things."

Maybe we should consider everything a person says before lauded them so freely: “I don’t go so far as to think that the only good Indians are the dead Indians, but I believe nine out of every 10 are,” Roosevelt said during a January 1886 speech in New York. “And I shouldn’t like to inquire too closely into the case of the tenth.”

Plus, there’s a driving tour of places where Harriet Tubman had significant experiences, like the site of the plantation she escaped from, and the general store where she sustained the head injury that gave her the visions that coincidentally helped her escape, and helped her guide others to freedom as well. There’s just something about seeing places (or just sites, if the structures are gone), and walking on the same ground that someone you admire walked on, that just brings them to life.
WHOA everything about this mural is so cool! This is actually probably my favorite one on here so far!!
3. Confirmation bias means that we will find a way to support negativity.
According to the doctor, confirmation bias is the idea that we will actively seek out, remember, and favor evidence that confirms something we already believe. "If you have decided that robberies are common in your hometown, confirmation bias makes it more likely for you to latch onto the data that supports this belief," Perlmutter highlighted. "Your brain will selectively focus on the information that helps your preexisting theory, ignoring conflicting facts."
We can also apply this on a larger scale: if you believe the world is a horrible place, confirmation bias means you’ll be looking out for proof that this is true while making it harder to hear perspectives that suggest the contrary.

Purposely starving children to lengthen their lives by a paltry 2 years. Then along comes insulin, and they can be kids again (though I wonder if the starvation prevented them from reaching certain milestones, and left them with physical and/or mental challenges). Take that, anti-science assholes.
The two doctors who advocated severe calorie restriction were convinced that they were acting in the best interested of scientific discovery. So, it wasn't "anti-science assholes," it was medical experts with a misguided hypothesis.

... taking this out of the competition is truly right and farsighted. Everyone knows, every competitor can use it, and likely will, once people take this into account when deciding which vehicle they're to buy. Unthinkable today - even capitalism became more capitalist, now being capitalismism or so ... and then again, this is so simple, yet effective, outperforming everything even in sight of the simplicity, and outsimpling everything even in sight of the same performance. He endured the most brutal physical and psychological torture. Yet when he became President, he was extremely generous because he hated how capitalism encourages the stockpiling of wealth and possessions, which do not give people happiness but actually do the opposite. He is a brave man who, unlike a lot of leaders, actually has morals and practices what he preaches.
Trevor, when Mujica and the Tupamaros began their "fight" the president of Uruguay was totally legitimate, the actions by the government at that time were as a consequence of the murders and robberies by Mujica and his henchmen. The coup d'état was provoked as a consequence of the disaster that this group was causing, not with that I am justifying the dictatorship, which from that moment was also involved in torture, deaths and excesses. I want it to be very clear that the dictatorship was a consequence of the Tupamaros and that their actions began in 1962 and not in 1966 as they have been led to believe.

"It's one thing to be informed, but quite another to expose yourself to sensationalized negativity for hours a day," he highlighted.
"Before and after taking in the news, ask yourself how much you really learned. If you were mostly confirming what you already believed, it probably wasn’t that helpful of an experience. Consider turning off the news when you feel you’re getting angry or otherwise upset. Better yet, try a news fast for a week and see how you feel."

Absolutely stunning, kudos to the unwavering effort and stunning outcome.
Only difficult because of the camera he used. If he used one of those film cameras that shoot thousands of frames a second he could have got this much quicker.
There are a few problems with what you say, at least. When did he do this? The technology simply might not have been available. Also cameras that shoot thousands of frames a second are prohibitively expensive. Additionally, cameras that shoe thousands of frames per second need a lot of light. Sometimes more light than what you're able to get from sunlight. Furthermore this is a moving object and you would want the aperture to be really wide open (for as much light as possible) and getting focus would be a nightmare on this no matter what kind of camera you had. It's a lot more difficult than you realize.

Way To Go To Save Trees
Not simple at all! The root balls on those things weigh a ton!
Load More Replies...When I was a kid in 1969, we dug up a 6’ fir tree that was growing in our yard, because it had become the most perfectly-shaped Christmas Tree. We were careful to get as much of the roots as possible, wrapped them in burlap, planted it in a huge pot, and my father and 3 of my 4 brothers (one was in the Marines and in Vietnam—-he came home the next Christmas) carried it inside. We did all the on Christmas Eve, in the afternoon, to reduce the amount of time it would be out of the ground. We took the best care of it we knew how for the week between Christmas and New Years, and on New Years Eve afternoon, we replanted it. It lived, and got to be a VERY big fir tree. It was the best Christmas Tree we ever had, but was very labor intensive, and there was a big risk it wouldn’t live after we replanted it. We were lucky. So it was a one-time experiment.
My Dad always replanted the Christmas trees. By the time I grew up, he had a privacy hedge.

To lower the risks of availability bias, try to put negative information into context. Consider this: bad things happen every day, but this doesn’t mean that life is necessarily bad or getting worse.
"When you hear a negative statistic ... about some recent disaster, you shouldn’t just write it off, but instead try to consider whether this is an isolated data point or actually part of a larger trend. The idea is that if you store new information in a more objective manner, it will give you a more balanced perspective when you later use it as a reference," Perlmutter said.

They did a programme about Portugal's drug policy. It is so forward thinking and admirable. Basically they concluded that drugs just are here to stay and there's no benefit to continuing to have a war against them. Instead they have decided to treat the situation like an illness that it is inevitable that a certain percentage of the population will suffer from, and the result has been stunning. They have an incredibly low rate of deaths from overdose, especially compared to countries like Norway, where it is really high. The sufferers are treated with compassion and everything possible is done to help them recover. As can be seen, the result is much fewer people are now 'sick'. What a surprise.
Portugal actually has mobile pharmaceutical trucks that deliver methadone & buprenorphine to those who need them throughout their medically assisted treatments for opioid dependency. They're like ice cream trucks filled with drugs. It's really an amazing system. BUT it depends on a few things the US (so far) lacks: 1. Single payer health care. 2. An acceptance that chemical dependency is a medical condition and not a crime. 3. The drive to lower our inmate population and close prisons.
And the arms and human trafficking industries, and let's not get started on 3 letter agencies.

Finally, there's the confirmation bias. With so many opinions and data points floating both online and in real life, it’s easy to find a detail that supports virtually any opinion. But Perlmutter believes this makes it all the more important to create strategies to lower the negative impact of this bias on our thinking.
"One powerful way to start lowering the effects of confirmation bias is to question your beliefs periodically," he said. "What are the facts on which your opinions are built? For example, after seeing multiple horrific articles on recent crime, you may think your hometown has become ... a more dangerous place to live, but have you actually examined any real data to support this idea?"
Challenging your perspective can be difficult but it's well worth it, dear Pandas.

Well, the whole 'florida man' news trope is because Florida has much less strict laws regarding what can be shared regarding citizens than most states, IIRC. You don't need as much consent to share people's stories, so there's a disproportionate number of lunacy represented compared to other states. Regarding the gators... I know they live in other states but it's mostly Florida. Sorry if you didn't actually want a serious answer to that.

In 1849, Henry "Box" Brown Was A Slave Who Mailed Himself In A Wooden Crate To Freedom From Richmond, Virginia To The Anti Slavery Office In Philadelphia. The Delivery Took 26 Hours And He Later Became A Public Speaker And Slave Abolitionist
The cruelness of slavery, caused incredible determination to just be human. A Human being risking their life, just to live. For those who make jokes, it shows your uncomfortableness with the true horrors that transpired.
And for a good chunk of the journey, the box he was in was upside down. I can’t imagine how uncomfortable that was, not to mention blood rushing from your limbs to your head. The thumping of your head and numbness of your limbs, and you can’t utter a sound because you’d be found out and not only returned to slavery, but probably sold further south. This, people, is the definition of strength, endurance, and determination, in its most basic, and desperate, form. How many people, who brag about how strong they are and how much they can endure, could really make it for HOURS like that without uttering a sound? Most of them would be blubbering like babies and begging to be let out of the box barely an hour into being upside down.
And think about it- it probably was hard to breathe bc in a closed box there is limited O2. After a while you risk passing out from too much CO2. I can only imagine he also had to pee in the box and was likely starving by the time he arrived. Just a small sacrifice for the freedom he was entitled by merely being born a living creature.

Its the onion ninjas. They’re relentless.
Load More Replies...I'm so very happy for this woman. It's amazing. But I'm going to gently note that "hard work and determination" are NOT ALWAYS ENOUGH. For neck injuries, and for other things. People - if you're struggling with something that seems too much - sometimes it's too much. Which doesn't mean give up, it means get help where you need it, and accept that sometimes things are crappy and that's NOT YOUR FAULT. Not everything can be overcome with hard work and determination and that doesn't make you a bad person.
There had to be some type of surgery done in order to restore her neck / back nerves or whatever. If pure determination solved being a quadriplegic, then more would fully recover. I'm not stating the road of recovery wasn't extremely difficult, just that once your paralyzed that's it, without some type of surgery.

When I went into labour with mine, I'd already been on 2-3 weeks maternity leave, and still had a further 50. It's mostly paid too. Its just cruel to force a woman to work til giving birth, then to expect women to return to work, leaving their newborn, before they're even fully recovered, in many, many cases.
I'll bet in the moment helping that other mother distracted her from her own contractions so it helped them both.
