But with so much data, some of the truly important bits of info sometimes get lost in the noise. Not all of it is pleasant.

You shouldn’t trust anything you stumble across online blindly without first considering its trustworthiness. At the same time, cross-referencing every single claim would eat up most of the time in your day. Not to mention how mentally exhausting it would be!
So your best bet is to do some light research if you think a fact sounds iffy. Look at multiple sources and figure out which ones you can most often rely on to get things right. Sensational headlines might get clicks and views, but they might rely on a single new study that may need more follow-up research.

Guns, I really really hate guns. People wonder why crime has increased its because of the guns. It's to easy to get them they don't check for the things like sings of suicidal thoughts or anything in the process of buying.
Why not treat guns like other dangerous machines such as cars, trucks, and airliners? If you want a gun, you have to do the training and pass a test, get insurance, and comply with your licence conditions (e.g., keep the weapon and ammunition out of sight and locked up, and locked up separately, when not in use). The more dangerous the gun, the harder the test - just like passing an airline pilot test is harder than passing a car driving test. No checking at gun purchase time needed beyond seeing the licence - getting the licence means you've already had the training, the background check, and all that. Just imagine if everyone in the USA who wanted a hand gun for self-defence actually had to get a good score on a firearm personal self-defence course - surely that'd help things get better.

One of my uncles nearly killed his brother one drunken night back in the 60s in Slovenia, which was then Yugoslavia. He was in the army reserves and had a shotgun at home, he believed it was loaded, aimed and kept trying to pull the trigger. Luckily their mum, my grandmother, had chosen that day to clean it and emptied the cartridge. He was sick to his stomach at what he had almost done. How many regret the fact they had a gun handy? How many spontaneous suicides or murders would have never happened? How many don't live to experience regrets and a second chance?
The deaths that break my heart is when a child gets hold of a loaded gun and shoots a sibling or a parent. How do they ever get over that?

A muzzle loader takes a great deal of deliberation (and training) to load. Not perfect,but I'm satisfied with the safety of my methods. Besides, I'm a hermit.
Sensible gun owners who treat their responsibility appropriately are and never have been a problem (I've known a few, even here in the UK. I always feel a pity for people living in such dangerous and unsafe regions that the see the need for carrying weapons as a necessity. It would feel to me as an enormous lack of freedom, having to be afraid of being killed constantly and to be ready for self defense 24/7. Where I live, it is possible to go everywhere, even visit people on their property for the first time or just go along at my neighbours for the first time, and go out at night, without the fear of being attacked. I needed some straw-pellets for the bedding of the horses, so I called a farmer who was selling them. He just said, pick from the shed what you need and let me know, I'll send you a Tikkie (our version of venmo). He wasn't afraid of me robbing him. We also have lot of carts along the roads, selling various produce, with a tin box or a QR-code for a Venmo. Prople do not take advantage of it.
I am all for restricting an access to guns. It is quite heavily restricted in my country (not impossible to get one but there's ton ol paperwork including psych evaluation)and I think that's a good thing. But - restricting guns, while helpful in many areas of life, won't end the problem with suicides. People will just change the methods. I.e. in my country there are almost no suicides via gun (maybe few cases/year) but on the other hand some 80%of suicides are by hanging. And we have quite high numers of suicide/year in Europe.
It's mostly quite hard to kill a human being, even if that human being wants to kill themselves. The thing with guns is that they enable killing as easily as flicking a switch.

Which is how my brother died after he got out of the military. They gave him a gun but harassed and discouraged him from taking medication after his tours in war and subsequent PTSD. -I have a gun. For hunting wild game. Handguns only have one purpose, as do automatic weapons. We had his gun melted down so it could never be used to take a life again. Gun culture infuriates me. Those are such stupid people if you want a gun use your brain if you have other people in the house put it in a gun safe. Store the bullets sperate. I have no issue with guns for hunting or even protection of property. I do have issues with assault rifles and other high speed shooting devices being available with a basic FOID. I also take issue to the lack of firearm safety, especially in private homes with children or people with mental health issues.

Humans are social animals, we require positive connections to other humans to survive. After reading this I understand why it says "bad statistics" in the title of the article. It's because so many of them are wildly inaccurate.
There were horrible. Most of these "statistics" were probably just numbers the OPs pulled out of thin air. Complete rubbish.
