Take a vacation, they said, it will be fun, they said. Except if it’s not. Because the truth is, no matter what the pitch-perfect shots on social media show, what the travel blogs tell you, what the summer getaway packages promise you, no one is safe from their holiday going from ripe to sour in no time.

The same goes with holiday pictures. It’s no secret that part of the motive to travel is driven by a wish to have great photos. Something to put on your Facebook page, something to share on Instagram, something to show off to your friends and colleagues, because humans are vain and it doesn’t take a whole lot to feel good.

This post is a safe place to talk about hard things. So if you've ever seen your dream holiday pictures crashing down like a sand castle, know that you’re far from the only one. We have all looked like lost potatoheads and sunburnt crabs, been photobombed or betrayed by weather at some point of our vacation.

So Bored Panda has compiled this list of travel photo fails to soothe our holiday-hungry souls and remind us that we can always take our fedora and go on yet another trip to collect not just good, but the very best pics. Psst! More vacation photo fails can be found in our previous feature right here.

It's a shame that the thug, murderer and lifelong prisoner Charles (Bronson) Salvador had to change his name to Salvador, and tarnish the name of the great artist.

It's much better as a hilarious keepsake than yet another cheesy vacation photo. Besides, I've often found I wished I had more photos of those who helped make a vacation so special. For the couple of cruises my husband and I went on years ago, I still remember the names of our room stewards and the head and assistant waiters, but I didn't get their pictures because I was too shy to ask.

Vacation shots are “important because that's the time they get to enjoy together, whether it's a couple, family or just friends,” said Charlie, the team manager of The Parisian Photographers, a Paris-based photography service that joins talented professional photographers who make pitch-perfect memories for couples, weddings, family, solo portraits, elopements, you name it. “Also because there is excitement of travel and discovering a new country, city and beautiful places there.”

“In the case of Paris, this is even more the case as it's often related to the city of love and romance for couples, and visitors in general are in awe of the city landmarks, food and French culture,” Charlie said, referring to the beautiful city where The Parisian Photographers work.

Reminds me of when our family visited a famous waterfall in Japan. The dense fog made it impossible to see, so I snapped a shot of the information sign, framing just the picture of the falls. Nobody could understand how I got such a good picture of the falls through the fog.

There are multiple reasons why it's so hard to get good images on vacations. “First of all, because you don't know the place as locals do, that's why hiring a local photographer can be so helpful,” Charlie said. “Also, selfies may be a way to do it, but the angles will be the same. Tripods and selfie sticks can help, but a photographer will also bring his/her expertise by shooting from a distance, including more landscape or cityscape in the background, varying portraits and wide-angle shots,” he explained.

When asked about the most common mistakes people make while taking vacation photos, Charlie listed a handful of them. The first one is taking only selfie photos. “It will be the same angle every time and wide-angle lens from the camera is not the most gratifying.” Another one is “only taking photos of your family/better half or friends since you won't be in the photo. Feel free to ask a stranger to take a picture of you all,” Charlie suggested.

Doing it in the middle of the day is another common faux pas in vacation photos. Instead, Charlie’s advice is to aim for sunrise or sunset when the light is better. The last one, according to him, is not hiring a local photographer. “Even just a short/mini session can do wonders to have photos you'll cherish forever.”

A similar thing happened to me, but there were a million more people, all taking flash photos of it (which it specifically says not to do) but here's the thing tho, why do we need a photo of it? We've been there, we've seen it, and possibly purchased the postcard at the Louvre shop right? It's not like we would ever go back and look at the picture much, unless you NEED proof. It's like people who film concerts or stage plays; it's unlikely you'll ever go back and watch it (unless of course the concert features some un-released B track or something)...why do we take pics of things in the first place? To show other people right? Do people actually want to see your photos? Probably as much as you want to see THEIR pics of museum visits. Just a thought...

I've never understood why people take photographs of artworks (unless it's to prove they were there). Admire it and then go and buy a postcard from the gallery shop.

You are not allowed to take pictures of most of the artwork nowadays, that's why she interrupted the picture. flash photography is strictly forbidden for all.

According to Charlie, a couple of things to think of when aiming for a pitch-perfect vacation shot are: more photos by sunrise/sunset; asking someone to take a picture of the whole group (for friends/family) or couple; asking for someone who has a camera and seems to know what they're doing; hiring a local photographer.

We also spoke with Krystal Kenney, a photographer working in Paris, France, specializing in portraits. Kenney is originally from Baltimore, Maryland, but has been in Paris for 10 years working with organizations such as the Louvre, Orsay, and diplomats.

The photographer told us that it’s hard to get good images of your vacation by yourself because there are certain principles that make a good image. Moreover, “you don’t know the best locations when you are traveling. Sometimes there are hidden gems,” Kenney said. According to her, the most common mistake while taking vacation photos is not shooting at the golden hours. “Sunrise is best because there are no people around and beautiful light,” she added.

Honestly, being surrounded by fog like that, that high up would freak me out more than a clear view. My imagination would run wild and it'd feel like the beginning of a horror film. Like maybe those things from Pitch Black would flash briefly in my field of view before disappearing into the fog. Or a ghost ship. Or sharks. Literally anything could just come out of that fog. All I'm saying is it would feel unsettlingly surreal.

I was actually at a fair one time and these two tiny elderly Chinese women (I’m guessing Mom and Grandma to the younger Chinese lady who spoke accented English) went head over heels over my three youngest children, all with fine, light blonde hair. They wanted their picture taken with them and the two little elderly ladies kept reaching out to excitedly pet their hair. No one minded, they were totally sweet and harmless and the younger one was a little embarrassed, but the kids took it all in stride and we let them have their picture.

I can remember the feeling of standing on the southern tip of Florida, US, staring out at the ocean. It's a strange feeling to know you are at the very end of land for a long ways. I can imagine how intense it would feel to be at the southern end of Africa or South America, staring out over the ocean.

Gibraltar isn't the tip of Africa, though, and the sea there isn't the endless ocean... Gibraltar is in Europe, bordering on Spain, at the strait of the Mediterranean Sea - i.e. the bit where the Iberian Peninsula *almost* touches on Africa. The women were hoping to see the very tip of northern Africa, which would be only about 14km away.

It Was Always A Personal Dream To Be Able To Go And Visit This Remarkable Oak Tree In The Shawshank Redemption

Turns out that people after the film released took away all those stones from the little wall that led to the tree away to their homes and lately in 2016 the tree fell in a thunderstorm.

While this is very sad, the wall removal wouldn’t have anything to do with the tree falling. Oak trees have some of the most invasive root systems and go very wide in all directions. Must have been a very serious thunderstorm

I read it several times trying to understand how a "little wall that led to the tree" would have kept the tree from falling in any way, wondering if the tree leaned on it or something! But in fact I think that the OP didn't mean to imply this, even if it sounds like it on first glance. I think what was meant is "I wanted to see this place from this movie, and it turned out that the two defining features of this place were *both* destroyed".

The "people" did not do anything to facilitate the fall of the tree. It was demolished by storms, not the removal of the stone wall...

In the case of normal oceans yes, but this is actually from a high salt, and beta carotene content during certain times of the year (rainy season). Besides, it literally named for its color: "Mar Rosado..."= "pink sea" , so common sense would tell you that it wasn't so named because of a fluke alga overgrowth event

This was def. intentional, too. When living in Interlaken I was asked by tons of tourists too, if I could take a pic of them. A thing like this never even crossed my mind! Why do this? Why trying to ruin someones maybe only time visiting your country? Tourists can be annoying, but everyone might be a tourist at some point... 🤷‍♀️

Ignore the wannabe art nerds. Christo was a pretentious snob irl, and now that he's dead people want to pretend that they "got it" all along. Hell, one of his "artworks" even killed a person. When asked about it he just said it underscored his artistic statement. Dude was a drag on legitimate artistic expression.

No. Not art. Some of Christo's stuff is really impressive art. This looks like it is being treated for termites. Just because an artist made it does not mean it is art. Yes I am referring to the hippie artist who sold his tinned poop. Not. Art.

When I went there in 2015, it was closed. Protesters were demonstrating against more telescope installations, so the park was off-limits.

I'm gonna make a fortune by making replicas of all these places (up close only) in one very foggy place. Every fake influencer can come and pretend they went all the way to these places but got fogged out.

Visited Machu Picchu in 2009, the historic site was amazing the view was breathtaking, I watched as my family walked the ruins as I was too sick to walk too far from the altitude. We visited the town and visited a few families and watched a parade and soccer match. Sadly the mudslide the next year took half the town with it. We have pictures of us standing in parts of the town that are gone.

The entitlement on these people is really something else. I'd never notice seeing just one pic like that, but seing a douzens of these... are these people serious? It's a RARE thing that you climb a mountain and actually see that stunning, beautiful view. Sometimes you climb for 10 hours, each time, and only on the third or fifth attempt you actually see anything but your feet. here everyone sounds like its some rare unfortunate thing that visibility isnt great.

Hitachi Seaside Park. Expectation vs. Reality

Hitachi Seaside Park. Expectation vs. Reality

This giant park in Ibaraki is famous for its beautiful flowers and plants on this hill with an ocean view. Every season there's something else blooming on this hill, which attracts people from all over Japan. So I took a train for 1,5 hours and a car for 2 more hours to see the view in the second picture. When I arrived there with 2 friends, we got the view of the first picture instead. Apparently, we were 5 days too late! They took out all the plants already.

This is about 20 minutes from where I live!!! You can see a beautiful view of the ocean from the top of that hill! The red plants are done in the fall. There are blue nemophila and tulips in the spring (which after 7 years, I still haven’t gone to see).

The local farmers also sprayed the surrounding area with excrement. 🤢

It’s actually like that. It’s all the nasty caustic quicklime in there.

Tourist complaining of other tourists is like someone in a car complaining about the traffic jam they’re in.

That's an easy fix. Crop out the tour and there's still a beautiful image.

They actually offer photography tours, where there's only a few people and on select good-light hours. But those cost around $300+ instead of $100. (Antelope canyon, 2018 prices)

Can give you a proper tour of the swamps here. Lot cheaper. Then we'll have more fun by running fishing lines. There's many gators along the bayou near me. Really blessed to have the swamps and bayous in my back yard. You really should check out the swamps during the winter. Favorite time of the year in Louisiana. When we actually DO have a winter, that is! Lol

Most of the places in southern Florida give you the option of an open topped airboat. Of course, it’s so hot and sunny, most people pick the ones with the roof and don’t get to see much.
