It can be hard to commit to a specific dinner plan at times, so most of us would probably balk at the idea of getting an impulse tattoo. And if we did finally decide to get inked, I suspect that we would put at least some thought into what exactly the artist would put on our skin. But this is not an article about good decision-making.

The origin of the word tattoo seems to actually come from Samoan culture, which features intricate and detailed designs that are both a right of passage and a cultural artifact. Outside of Polynesia, before the 18th century, people would describe the tattooing process as painting or even scaring. Some forms of ‘tattoos’ are actually unintentional. When coal dust, carbon, or even gunpowder would get into a wound, it would leave some permanent pigmentation in the skin.
It’s somewhat shocking how bad these designs are, as the art of tattooing is older than a lot of other skills humans have developed. Mummified human remains have multiple tattoos, showing at least some interest in the artistic expression on one’s skin. Ancient Egyptians also had more figurative tattoos around five thousand years ago, cementing it as a pretty old art form. Despite all this time, it seems some artists still can’t draw their way out of a wet paper bag.

This might actually be one of those "temporary" tattoos. They're actually tattooed on you the same way as normal tattoos. But it's a special ink that's SUPPOSED to leave your skin in the near-ish future... sometimes they don't actually fade for years.. but it's a semi new thing. Judging by how much this tattoo is fading.. Im almost positive it's not a permanent tattoo.

Worked with a guy once who had a big biohazard symbol tattooed on his throat like this. He changed shirts one day and I figured he would be covered in tats. Nope. That was the only one. He chose to get that throat tattoo and stopped there. Odd choice.
One advantage we have over our ancient relatives is the ease with which we can get rid of unwanted tattoos. Ease here is relative, it can still be a painful and costly process. But no doubt a laser is better than what humans had to deal with before. Women tend to regret their tattoos slightly more often than men, though this may be due to the fact that men have better coping mechanisms for bad tattoos. About half of the respondents in this study who wanted to get their ink taken off had higher education, including at least a university degree.

So, this is bad for a few reasons. 1: The lines are very scratchy/not clean. 2: The actual web is not connected anywhere (just look at most spider web tattoos, there's usually a point in the middle that connects the piece together). 3: Elbows and knees are very painful to get inked, on top of the skin usually being tougher there due to the callouses. This guy's couldn't even be bothered to get a proper one.

I heard someone say 90% of people who get a face tattoo, are having regrets later on.
While some end up removing tattoos due to health reasons, like the pigmentation causing allergic reactions, in the majority of cases removal was driven by psychological regret. Overall, most people who get a tattoo do not end up regretting it and only a minority actually gets the piece lasered off. This could be partially due to better tattoo artists being able to take a ‘bad’ tattoo and convert it into something more aesthetic.

When that "moment" concerns getting a tattoo, you really should be paying attention to whether you are getting value for money. Otherwise you end up with this. A cheap tattoo, a saying that contradicts itself, tattooed by someone who can't do script, but knows "just" enough that sadly most of the ink looks like it will hold; a permanent "rash"; and a rose that from the appropriate angle contains a surprisingly realistic representation of the female genitalia at it's centre.

I get why everyone is bashing on this tattoo but one thing I will say, it's possible that the bad writing is because the person wanted their own handwriting or the handwriting of a loved one used. If that's the case, the only truly bad thing about it is the red outlining.

If it is something that originated from a loved one, tattooed in their hand, then it's obviously an entirely different situation with the script. Most have only commented about the contradictory nature of the phrase itself. So far I think I'm the only one who has criticised the script itself. Without more information on the origins, we can only use the information that we have. It still doesn't excuse the rest of the tattoo.

It's a shame this guy has a decent looking lion at the top, but the rest are terrible. I like the geometrical look, but it looks like the other lions were drawn by an apprentice, or the artist's child. Is this sarcasm? That shading is absolutely horrible! The outline is sketchy & uneven. The color on the butterfly wings isn't terrible. But as a tattoo artist (I don't work in a shop full time anymore. I only do it as a side gig) & someone covered in tattoos... that's not a very good tattoo. It's better than most of these on here. Sure. But this artist definitely needs to go back to smaller pieces & learn how to shade better. You couldn't pay me to have this person tattoo me. This is a cultural thing right? I think it might be maori? This is when the women of the maori tribe have to get these chin, neck, cheek and nose tattoos done to be accepted into the tribe? I don't know if I'm correct. I someone knows about this culture, pls let me know!!

I'm lost. So many of the top ones (I suspect ranking will still have MAJOR changes) aren't bad at all. Some of the others are ameteurish, but hardly shameful. Yes, SOME are terrible, but I don't see why the "shaming" in so many.

I shame every tattoo I see - silently, unobtrusively, in my head. I just don't particularly care to see graffiti on the human body.
