A survey by RENTCafé polled over 1,500 adults in the U.S. to learn what specifically defines a bad roommate, and what we can do to avoid ending up with one in the future.
According to the results, the biggest offense was not paying rent, with 20.4 percent of respondents grading this delinquency an "F."
Considering that part of the whole point of having a roommate is to cut costs, it makes sense that this would top the list.

Coming in just a hair behind at second and third place were mean or insulting behavior (20.3 percent rated this the biggest offense), and disinterest in being friends (20 percent).
"You'd think other issues would be larger," Amalia Otet, a spokesperson for RENTCafé, said. Like perhaps being late on utility bills, which was deemed the worst offense by 19.6 percent of respondents; or being unclean, the top F-rated offense by 12.1 percent.

For example, 35.4 percent of women who gave their last roommate an "A" noted that the roommate was someone who already lived in the home when they moved in, while 35.2 percent found their dream dweller through an online service or social media.

Interestingly, over 40 percent of the women surveyed gave their male roommates an A grade too, while just over 20 percent of them awarded their same-sex roommates with the top mark.
But, according to the survey, even though perfect roommates — with that cushy A rating — were the least likely to commit bad behaviors multiple times (at under 5 percent), they still showed a propensity for the annoyances.
So occasional slip-ups like forgetting to fold your laundry or leaving a sock on the floor don't cast a shadow over your reputation. It's the overall rapport that matters.

She is constantly doing things to try and make me miserable enough that I'll move out. Especially the week after I pay rent. She has been doing it to people for years but I didn't know until after I moved in. Now she has a camera facing my bedroom door so I can't even go to the bathroom without her watching me. I had to put a camera in my room before she steals and she kept going in my room while I was at work. Now she has figured out if she turns off the wifi I can't see when she's going in there. I could go on and on about the things she does but we'd be here all night.

To all the people responding to these entries with "well you obviously just need to move out" -- it's hardly ever that simple. Sometimes you end up in a roommate situation because it was the only option you could afford and there were no other places even close to the low rent you found. Finding a new place that you can afford can take a very long time, and then of course you've got the costs of moving on top of that.
I'm actually reading a book right now (Gregor Craigie Our Crumbling Foundation: How We Solve Canada's Housing Crisis) and it explains exactly that! And it's not just about Canada, like the title would suggest, it talks about Tokyo, Taiwan, etc. We all have the same problem (insufficient housing) but some places made great plans and the author shows how it's working or not. So far so good, I'm almost finished.
