For our earlier piece on the subreddit, Pinsandpearls, one of the moderators of Bad MakeUp Artists, said 'bad makeup' probably means different things to different people, which is why the subreddit has such a wide variety of posts.
"Typically, we're looking at makeup that isn't applied skillfully — lack of blending where appropriate, terrible foundation color match, messy lines," Pinsandpearls explained to Bored Panda. "I don't think it includes things that are maybe 'different' than you would normally see, as long as the actual application is good (editorial makeup, for example). We still allow some of those posts because it usually has a good discussion and taste is subjective, but I think there's a difference between 'different' and 'bad.' Bad is pretty obvious when you see it."

"If you take a look, you can probably see a lot of makeup artists and normal people are mismatching their foundations to their skin's undertone," another moderator of the subreddit, badMUAscout, added.
"If you're slightly off, it's probably ok. Our skin isn't one flat color and it can vary in shades throughout the day. It doesn't help that foundations oxidize and can go from perfect to pumpkin shades. While sometimes it isn't an issue, when you are paying a trained artist hundreds of pounds or dollars to do makeup, you shouldn't end up with a different undertone or a shade five times darker than your skin."
Contouring also gets featured on the subreddit quite often. "Contour is meant to mimic the 'shadows' you naturally have but very very slightly enhanced. We consider it to be bad when it looks like a dark stripe down the side of the face which doesn't match the natural shadows," badMUAscout explained.

As an ex-mortician I take offense! I would never have that s****y of a color match. But if the family gives me photos of grandma and she's wearing pink lipstick and bright blue eye shadow, you best believe that's what you're going to get. (I won't even get into restorations, cause that's a different beast to conquer all together.)

SHE DID IT BACKWARDS! The contour is applied to the sides of the nose and the highlight goes on the bridge because of the way light and dark behave - light brings shapes forward while dark allows them to recede. Bizarre choice since she correctly applied it to her cheekbones yet her nose looks like when you leave your grilled cheese under the burner for too long.

They have their makeup license from the state of Florida and have had over 100 hours of theory and hands-on training, with written and practical application tests, so they know what they're talking about. And that is a big positive that comes from Bad MakeUp Artists. Sure, we can all laugh at the photos, but if you browse through the comments, you can find valuable information even within the jokes.

When I got my makeup professionally done for my high school senior photos, apparently my skin tone is really not common in foundations, like it's cool to the point sometimes I probably look dead, Snow White looks tan next to me kind of thing. She searched high and low to find a good match, and I actually was very satisfied with the results :)

It seems consistently these makeup artists don't under what undertones are. This girl has a pink undertones to her skin, not yellow. Also the shade is off, she pretty pale. Also stop caking it on, start with a smaller amount, blend then go back with concealer. I barely wear makeup and I could do so much better.

Also, the subreddit forces the industry to be more transparent. "I feel as though the market is oversaturated with people claiming the MUA status without having proper training, and that causes people to lose faith in the makeup artist industry as a whole," RedHeadedSnatch said.

I always wonder if it was the artist or the client on photos like this, that chose the color change. The artist could just be lazy or terrible at their job, sure. But when I sold Lancome makeup I would OFTEN get women who tried to push their color tone in the extreme. In particular I would get a lot of (beautiful!) Asian women who would ask for the "most pale" foundation we had, even if it wasn't even close to their natural shade. Meanwhile, some slightly older white women would ask for several shades darker, wanting to look less washed out (the 60/70's babies who always tanned). I always encouraged them to color match more closely, but you have to give them what they want at the end.

I am seeing this over and over, it reminds me of how bad foudations for us were in the 1990s, it's a tone issue, MAC has two undertone lines one is yellow base the other is pink. And please please please people, after u try a foundation color on, go outside in the sun and see how it blends, if ur face is one color and ur neck is another try again!!!!

I love my waterproof mascara. I use it every day and I go overboard with it because I have transparent long lashes and I NEED to make them visible. That said, I wouldn't be caught dead with lashes like that. IF my favourite mascara would advertise like that I wouldn't buy it anymore. NOP.

No idea why people are ranting about being British. As for the make-up, this one is actually well done, even though it's still on the "bit much" side of things. Tone down the eyelashes and soften the undercut of the eyebrows and it would look nice.

The look actually isn't bad, sadly the person who did her makeup probably didn't have a shade dark enough for this girl and used the darkest they had. I've seen a lot of darker skinned girls do this on YouTube to show how brands need more inclusive shade ranges.

Yes! My skin is very fair with a neutral undertone. It took years to find a true match that wasn’t too yellow or too pink. My friends with dark skin have a very hard time, too. Most brands cater to the median of the color spectrum and tell the rest of us to buy multiple colors and mix them together at home.
