When you hear that someone’s an architect or a designer, odds are that you’re impressed. If you’re like us, you might imagine that they build gorgeous skyscrapers and meticulously work to elevate interiors to perfection. However, not all ‘pros’ are of the same caliber. Some look like they’re just winging it.
We’ve collected some of the top posts (read: biggest nightmares) from the r/BadArchitecture and r/ArchitectureFails subreddits to show you just how bad things can get. We’re not only talking about a lack of taste, some of these structural decisions are downright dangerous! Scroll down for some architectural madness. You’ll swear you’ve accidentally stumbled down the rabbit hole and into Wonderland…

Why? That pretty parquet floor can just soak them wet dishes surely...i jest.
Load More Replies...I wonder who thought it was a good idea, the architect/builder or the homeowner? I had a kitchen reno done recently and the first two builders who quoted really pushed the idea of an island. I didn't think there was room. The third builder to quote said "we'll do whatever you like, but I don't think there's room for an island". Guess which one got the job :)
Someone has never washed dishes before. ... or cooked. Or... used a sink at all.
The r/BadArchitecture online community was founded in early 2012, and it currently has just over 2.7k members. Meanwhile, the r/ArchitectureFails group, also started up in 2012, has 670 members.
They are niche subreddits that focus on one thing and one thing alone—showing the world just how bizarre and mind-meltingly low-quality some buildings have been designed. Fridges in the middle of the kitchen, wonky windows, and Extremely Precarious Death Stairs (patent pending) are just the tip of the iceberg.
Start Small, And Then Just Expand! House In Cambodia
I think this was the house the Big Bad Wolf couldn't blow over :D
Load More Replies...This was apparently also a thing in Europe (Germany) in former times. As you were paying (taxes?) for the ground the house stood - and in historic city centers still stay - on, the house owners went for a small ground level floor and enlarged the upper stories. (Though often only to the front and back, as the houses stood in a row).
I wonder what is happening here, as there is more than enough room to build at ground level. They even had some more foundation laid out, so it seems... Maybe it is floodregion?
Load More Replies...I wouldn’t judge this one, I know of a lot of reasonings why it ended up this way
It is in a floodplain. I suspect before the top level was built that middle level had a large bamboo porch that was at least partially covered. This is common Sri Lanka East to the Philippines. My beach house on Samal Island in the Philippines is built along the same lines except the concrete central tower goes up the center of the entire 4 story building and all the upper floors are the same size. The center block houses the stairs in the middle, plumbing and bathrooms on one end with secured storage and electrical on the opposite end.
It is structurally sound. They build like this in floodplains from Sri Lanka to the Philippines.
Load More Replies...It is a lot more prone to flooding. The small size will stand up to water pressing against its entire length where as a larger wall won't.

One of the best skills you can have as an architect (and that goes for practically any other career path as well) is being a capable leader. That means knowing how to communicate clearly and efficiently with others, supporting and respecting your team, and being able to find compromises when things get tense.
Without decent leadership or communication skills, you can have the best and brightest ideas in the entire realm, but that won’t do you much good if you can’t turn your imaginative blueprints into reality. No architect is an island—they have to be team players.
This Flight Of Stairs Right Outside A Bedroom

I Want To Understand... I Really Do
It's obviously deliberate, but why? Curtains won't hang right. The angled windows don't open by the look of it. When you go to resell you cut down the number of potential buyers drastically. And to top it off, it doesn't really look that great anyway.
The wonky ones are false windows. Just glass no holes behind them. I'm guessing they rigged it up for a joke while building.
Load More Replies...But only the middle ones. 🤔 Would it confuse them enough? 😆
Load More Replies...Its called a porta-potty. They are left at job sites or other places where a bathroom with running water is not available. If you're asking about the building behind it, I have no idea.
I bet it looks groovy from inside! I always arrange furniture at diagonal angles, so I think I'd like the way this feels. (It's not my fault; I'm an aquarius.)
Knew someone who build his house using discarded building supplies, which meant most of the windows didn't match. Yet, with careful planning, it worked. I can only imagine what the vinyl siders thought of this nitwit design.
Poor communication skills will inevitably lead to a deep divide between what the designer envisioned and what the contractors have built. When there’s ambiguity in the blueprints or instructions, you’re essentially letting the builders decide what to do themselves. And that’s exactly what they’ll do if the architect isn’t on-site, ready to field questions.

An Apartment In London That Has No Front Door. Just A Set Of Stairs Leading Up To A Window
There was no architect or engineer involved in here... I've seen this one before, the owner modified this in order to charge an obscene amount of money for rent. This article is so bad, on a lot of them there is no architect involved...
Thank you for pointing this out, the one I just saw was the one in Cambodia, there’s no money to rebuild, plus the base is made out of a material that can at least withstand a flood in that region, while the family will be on the mid or top level

Load More Replies...It wouldn’t be so horrible if it touched the roof. Just a dust collector now.
It probably was originally not an open floor plan. And that's where the hookups were and it was less costly to just leave them. Not that it looks in any way good. But just a theory.
Meanwhile, the New Jersey Institute of Technology also stresses the need to have top-notch design and problem-solving skills, as well as a background in mathematics and a solid understanding of the law. What’s more, good architects will be computer-savvy and have a way to turn their creativity into clear visuals.
Doors To ???
I've seen a number of such buildings. They were used for firefighter training. The new recruits would climb ladders and rescue people from the towers.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice ( hey kids they’re making a part 2- not a reboot )
I’m thinking that, at some point in history, there were wood or metal stairs or a fire escape attached to the building and lining up to these doors, but they have been removed for some reason. Wouldn’t an extra exit come in handy in case of fire or something equally hazardous? Replace the fire escape, ffs. This isn’t 1912, and the building isn’t the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory—-scratch that—-Sweatshop.

Stairs Straight To 1st Floor
Don't worry honney. I will check whrere this ladder goOOAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH! Thud.
You can either use the interior stairs or our express stairway if you're pressed for time.
At times, poor design decisions aren’t a result of maliciousness on the contractors’ part. They might have been the best course of action, given the circumstances and (a lack of) resources. In other words, when you need to keep a deadline, you look for ways to get the job done, instead of aiming for ‘perfection’ (if that even exists). In times like this, it often helps to look at the property you just bought as an eternal ‘work in progress.’ Not every detail will be to your liking, but with enough care and attention, you can make your house feel like a home.
Big Brain Roof Access Placement
I'll just check the rooAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!
Oddly enough, I had to do this on a house I designed (client wanted access to the roof from the balcony because he was afraid someone might get into his house by climbing the outside and dropping through from the roof), but I made sure to specify on the plans that the hatch opens the other way and to place the ladder on the other wall...
Whoever did this should be heavily fined and forced to wear a sign in public announcing they're an idiot.

My guess. It,was,a remodel and the tile guy didn't consider the switch when he set the height for the tile. Or, it's possible the electrician didn't pay attention to the wall finish when setting switch height. My guess iits the first since electricians simply don't make errors. It's always the other trades fault.
This is what happens when you hire your friend who says they know how to do tile.
It’s it’s not even like it was a quarter of an inch off. It was a whole freaking 4 inches.
There's other options, but that's a common switch.

However, in other cases, mistakes happen because the contractor team might be lazy, looking to cut costs, or might simply want to get the project over as quickly as possible.
Ariane Sherine, the former editor at ‘These Three Rooms,’ previously told Bored Panda why mistakes happen and what we can all do to embrace that our homes are imperfect.
"Certain materials might be unavailable so they decide to use an unsuitable substitute, or they might have a surplus of the substitute that they want to use up. They might be misinformed and not very good at their job and think they're doing the right thing. Or they might be trying to save money and end up cutting corners as a result," the interior design expert shared why mistakes can and do crop up in homes.
There's No Entrance To The Balcony Except For That Little Window
Yes! If they fall out of the window they cannot roll too far away.
Load More Replies...A house opposite mine has that. When the balconies were added to the old house, tenants got their rent raised for having access to a a balcony. This one tenant refused, so they didn't expand their window into a door. Doesn't stop them from having a table, seating, plants etc. on the balcony, they just clim out the window!

The master bedroom shares it bathroom with two other rooms and all 3 require you pass through that chokepoint to get to them. There's a separate bathroom for one of the smaller bedrooms but that bedroom still requires you pass through the main bathroom to get to it.
Why?
Found an old window during renovations, it's possible the historical buildings protection required it remains visible. Execution could qualify as questionable though
But why no use the old window instead of making this mess?
Load More Replies...Yo dawg, I heard you like windows so I put a window inside yo window
Look, we have this extra window frame; we have to do something with it.
Is this a split level floored home since older? Why not one big window or at least cut off that overhang. confused 🙄🥴🤔
One example of a contractor not being worth their salt is opting for materials that don’t fit the purpose. For instance, if they decide to use wood like oak, ash, and pine outdoors, which are not weather resistant, there’s probably something fishy going on.
Other red flags include not following the right process during an installation, “such as not tanking a wetroom to ensure it's waterproof.”
Feel Sorry For The Person Who Thought It Was A Fire Escape
It may have been a metal staircase or fire escape at some point in history. Should still be at least a fire escape.

The House Next Door #fail
How did this get to this level of completion without the plumbing inspector stopping it? It should have been spotted at the rough stage at the latest. There's faucets for a washing machine in that garage.
Is the problem that the houses are 2 inches apart, or that you can't pull into your driveway? I can't tell. You also can't get into your garage because there is a black wall in the way.. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE
Photoshopped. Cant be real. I thought same. Zoomed in garage door is open. We are looking into a white walled garage. However does not account for the neighbor inches away or how to even drive a car up driveway.
Load More Replies...This sort of building is getting way too common. Most councils have rules against building that close but it's possible to get relaxations if both parties are ok with it. But such a terrible idea. Can't really fit between the two houses, so it's gonna wind up being full of weeds and random c**p you can't get out.
I think it's the driveway that's the 'bad' bit of this one, not the proximity.

What is it with American bathrooms/toilets? You can't normally do your thing sitting, because of the lake of water in the wc. And second, why does everybody building them have the dumb rule of installing doors or side panels that are just way too short? It's making it awkward to go there having a number two or for some people even a number one.

Realistically, as long as there's nothing major such as a faulty boiler or leaking roof, it's up to the homeowner what they're willing to live with," she told us. In short, ensure that your home is functional, but try not to stress too much if every tiny little detail doesn't align. So long as you're not in danger or incredibly inconvenienced, whether or not you can live in an imperfectly designed home becomes a matter of perspective and taste.

An Outhouse In New Mexico (Tinted Red Because Of My Headlamp)
This isnt weird. Swedish outhoses traditionally often have 2-4 holes and going there was/is a social thing.
This is just old school normal. The outhouse on our farm had two holes and didn't have those fancy seats - just wood holes. We had indoor plumbing when I lived there so I only used it once in a while if my boots were dirty. The farm was a homestead. Well dug by hand, draft horses and dynamite to clear the fields - the whole deal. My stepdad had 7 sisters plus his parents so I think at times having two holes was just a practicality of life.
Yup. Private bathroom spaces are a modern luxury.

Yup. While 0F around here only comes with unsafe conditions I agree with the basic concept--out there you have no way to ensure bathroom privacy. Your own party will generally avoid issues but being hiked in on is going to happen sooner or later (or what happened to one acquaintance--a mountain climber popped up over the dropoff behind her.) If you freak about bathroom privacy you're not going to handle the backcountry well.

Great indeed for ironing board, as they did. Perfect for all other cleaning stuff too. The other side has a door too, just needs some shelves. See no problem here.
Exactly. This looks like the water heater closet, just like I had in several apartments I lived in when I was single. Those closets are usually located near the kitchen or bathrooms, and are never in place of clothes closets. They also end up housing the ironing board, mops, brooms, and often (if there was room) a stepladder as well on one side, and had small shelves for cleaning supplies on the other side. Not a design flaw, as apartments often have their own water heaters, and they have to go somewhere.

At the end of the hallway on each floor you have a door that allows larger objects (bed, pianos, etc) that will never fit through the stairwell to be moved into the home/office/etc. If you've ever watched a Bugs Bunny cartoon where someone is crushed by a falling piano, some movers were using one of these doors and the piano was being winched up.
