I Wish ...humanity Changes
Aaron Tucker
Since 2014, the subreddit has been steadily growing and bringing our attention to the devastating things happening around us. From gruesome crimes to minor injustices, the community is dedicated to showing how bad our world can get. As the moderators say, “Lament with us as we view all things that are just genuinely awful.”
Sadly, we have a tendency to dwell on the things that go wrong and use stronger words to describe them. When it comes to the positive or neutral incidents, they seem to be not as important. Just think about negative stereotypes—humans are quick to form bad impressions and often have a hard time changing their views.
Poor Guy :(
These stories break my heart, they really do. So many people, SO MANY, are just one illness away from this happening to them. Our government has utterly failed us.
The Fact That This Is So Common Is Heartbreaking
Even if some of us have a rather optimistic view of life, people still remember more details about their unpleasant experiences. “The brain handles positive and negative information in different hemispheres,” Clifford Nass, a professor of communication at Stanford University, told The New York Times.
He said that negative emotions generally involve more thinking, and the information is processed more thoroughly than positive ones.
Psychologists refer to this as the negativity bias. Picture it: you’re having a pleasant day at work until your coworker throws you an inconsiderate comment. When you come back home, what will you remember more—the overall good day or the remark?
We Are All Spolied
Richest Country
Great way to eradicate your customers though. Because type 1 diabetes kills almost instantly without that incredibly effective solution. And really, you can't thrive a company without the big ones like diabetes, so only the rich will have the money, but there are less of those people, making the need to up the price and even fewer people can pay, etc. etc. And when that's your dynamic, you know it's not a very sustainable model.
Load More Replies...I think it was when I learnt that in America even a child's insulin has to be paid for or the child goes without that I really grasped how appalling the situation really is.
It is beyond apalling. My friend has diabetes and he couldn't afford insulin. He didn't tell anyone. Maybe we could have helped him. He almost died. He survived but now he is a shadow of himself. He couldn't ask for help because he is Mexican and he has family who are living here without papers. This is making me angry.
Load More Replies...Totally f****d up and unnecessary. How is money more important than human life in usa? Beyond .
Clearly you need to meet my gOoD fRiEnD, CaPiTaLiSm
Load More Replies...That's sad man. May not be the best option for everyone out there, but several countries (like here in Brazil for example) will give you insulin no matter where you from or what your status. Go to the hospital, make sure they understand what you're saying and that's it, free insulin. We may not be rich, but we try to help everyone
Unlike the U.S., Brazil is a civilised country.
Load More Replies...The US would not even need universal health care to prevent things like this. Insulin is very cheap to make and the person who first invented it deliberately did not patent it so as many people as possible could get it. The prices for insulin in the US are jacked up to an extreme amount due to corporate greed and the government not intervening to prevent such gross overpricing of medication. They have a salary cap for athletes, but no price cap for medication, think about that.
You're right. This is horrible. But let's get some facts straight. The salary caps for athletes are not government mandated. That is an agreement between the leagues and the athletes. You make it sound like our government set that, and it doesn't.
Load More Replies...This is what happens when the people responsible for making policies are privileged enough to be completely unaffected by the problems they are supposed to be solving. Unconscionable that this happened, and continues to happen.
They also take bribes from these corporations to sit on their hands or actively fight for higher prices. Manchin has outed himself recently for this.
Load More Replies...I recently needed to call an ambulance for myself for reasons (false alarm). The paramedics came and spent 45 minutes examining me in the ambulance and decided to take me to the hospital for further examinations. I spent 3 hours there while they took many many tests and x-rays until I got released. Few weeks later I got two bills, 25€ for the ambulance and about 30 euros for the hospital visit. I am more than happy to pay my "high" taxes in my "socialist" country.
I know, right? But unfortunately we „socialists“ don’t know what freedom means.
Load More Replies...It's very sad because other countries have excellent health coverage for their citizens. In America everything seems based upon money or profit, someone please correct me if this is not the case, thank you. We should take a look at what Canada is doing, just a thought!
It is. And the majority of people in the US want universal health care with at least a national option if not total national health. However, our constitution allows for many ways for a minority control the majority. And we also have an election system that relies on private contributions. Politicians are easily bought by corporate interests. Health insurance generates massive profits and those companies are among the largest contributors to political campaigns. We spend 2x what our peer countries do on healthcare and we get less for it. The rest is going to administrative costs and profit taking. It's not that the American people are unaware of this, it's just finding a way to fix it amidst our structural issues with representation. We really aren't a democracy despite what a lot of people here want to believe.
Load More Replies...Irony is the ppl behind this mess of health care system claim to be "pro life" (ie. Against abortions) but once you are alive they give 0 shits and let you die. Freaking joke
Wow.the more I read the comments it shows you do not understand who is profiting from healthcare. Its not Republicans. Its the party who has had majority of control for past 50 years.go google the stocks that Congress owns. That'll tell you a lot.
Load More Replies...Insulin for my dad cost's him 37$ a year in Australia. If I make a dessert or something with lots of sugar (bad for diabetics) he shrugs and says he'll just take more insulin. Really shows you just how f****d up America is.
So glad that I was born in Britain, my two types of insulin are free and because I’m type 1 diabetic I dont have to pay for any prescription for ANY illness I might get. It is so wrong that people have to pay to stay alive, surely staying alive is the most basic human right
The rest of the developed world can't understand how the US can do this to it's people - esp while still claiming to be the best country in the world.....
Is this the USA? Richest country in the world, which just raised the state debt. Limit 2'500 billion dollars, to new 31'400 billion dollars? 31'400'000 million dollars debt?! Btw., Libya had no debt but they had plus on their "state account", before gadaffi was killed.
US isn't actually listed in the things I read as richest country in the world - Qatar is usually at the top. Admittedly it does seem to vary based on how its calculated 🤷https://financesonline.com/top-10-richest-countries-in-the-world/
Load More Replies...It's only the richest country on the planet if you count up all the tax free billionaires' wealth.
I've had to rely on Walmart insulin rather than my prescription many times. I hate Walmart but it has literally saved my life. $24.88 for a bottle of Novolin insulin. And only Walmart sells it at that cost. It's at least $100 a bottle at any other pharmacy. No prescription needed. I feel like more people need to know this. It doesn't change the fact that insulin costs are crazy high and something needs to be done. But it could literally save lives if more people knew.
And Elon Musk has $400 billion. And Republicans refuse to raise his taxes. In fact they give him, and his irk, tax relief. Does anyone see what's wrong with this?
For those unaware, in the US, this means that he pays $450.00/month but his coverage does not even begin until he pays that $7,600.00 in medical expenses first. Do the math; that's $13,000.00 out of pocket before he gets covered for anything. That's more than a third of his income. People with low wages can't afford that, but that's pretty much all that is available to them and a lot of medical providers will not accept people who don't have insurance. Also, there is an annual penalty fee if we don't pay for health insurance. This is not anomalous. This is how it is here.
Just to clarify, that math is annually. It all resets back to zero at the beginning of the fiscal year.
Load More Replies...There should be multi-billion dollar lawsuits against the pharmaceutical companies for this, like for the opiate epidemic.
Yeah, no one pays for it, right? Economic ignorance.
Load More Replies...We are NOT ran my government, we are strictly ran for the 1% along with corporations. Nobody gives a flying f**k about the rest of us in this disgraceful pathetic country.
Diet, exercise can help too. Type 1 diabetes means your pancreas doesn't work at all. I think there is more to the story. There are ways he could have gotten help. I have insulin, I mean a lot of it that I don't use but keep to help others. He could have gotten involved in a community or group for people in his same situation. I'm just saying there were ways to have gotten help instead of being dead. Like I said, there has to be more to his story than what the person posted.
Our president is currently working on lowering the price of insulin to $30 a month.
There are so many programs to provide cheap or free insulin to people that need it. My brother has type 1 diabetes and hasn't had insurance in years. He worked for non-profits at a very low wage and so he got insulin from the companies for a very low monthly cost or free with proof of income. He literally had a dozen hacks and sources for the insulin.
You know what, maybe the supports had a good idea storming the capital and trying to overthrow the government. Because let's be honest both the Democrats and the Republicans have done jack to fix the f'up health system. All have there greedy hands in the cookie jar getting their kickbacks. You want real change, try a revolution because neither parties are going to help you.
Where are the petitions to stop pharmaceutical companies from doing this bs and holding them accountable for the people that suffer for their profits??
It is covered at 100% in France. My son is diabetic and it doesn't cost us a cent
The creaters of insulin gave up the royalties so everyone could have access to this life saving med.
Considering that the Canadian doctor (Banting) who developed insulin refused to patent it because it should be free to everyone who needed it ..... well - I'm sure the good doctor is turning in his grave.
I can't afford my diabetic medication beyond the generic oral tabs. $800 per month is out of my safety zone.
He died in 2017. The price of insulin, the only product that keeps diabetics alive, has jumped 585 percent over a period of 14 years prior. That represented an increase for one-month’s supply from $170 to $1,400, prices that are not justified given the fact that makers didn’t invest in research and development for the product and don’t advertise. Part of the problem is that only three manufacturers make most of the insulin in the U.S. and all have been able to prevent the substance from being available to generic manufacturers by slightly changing its formula over the years, a wrinkle in U.S. patent law that isn’t the case in Europe, where diabetics do have access to the lower-cost generic versions. Some legislators in state Congresses had introduced bills to help diabetics to get their insulin at an affordable rate. However, as soon as President Trump got behind that, they dumped those patients on the ground and left them there, just to not support anything Trump thought was good.
"Why do so many people die from cancer?" Because, Timmy, treating patients for long periods of time makes more money than actually curing them.
you know what is even more effed up? Banting and Best (in Toronto)- charged NOTHING for the copyright on insulin as they felt it was life-saving and should be available to everyone
This is so far beyond travesty. I just can't. Life saving drugs should be affordable, regardless of anything else.
As a Type 1 Diabetic who is a minor, this is the stuff that haunts my nightmares. If I don't make enough, get a job with health insurance, etc, I will die. People say 'follow your dreams', but I can't, because all the jobs I would love to have wouldn't pay my medical bills. *in sarcasm* Thanks, America!
I have calculated my monthly budget over and over, and I have decided that I will not have an insulin pump as an adult. Though it means I will have to take 5+ shots a day, it also means I will not have to pay an extra $2,000 a month . However, having insulin, syringes, a test kit, a Dexcom CGM(necessary for me due to a problem with not waking up with blood sugar in the night) still will cost me over $1750 a month.
Load More Replies...I'm sorry for his death but WTH kind of insurance was he on??!! I've only got a $1000 ded and my insulin is only $25 before it's paid, then free after the ded is paid. He seriously needed to talk to a better insurance company!
1, 300 for insulin a month? WHAT?! America is a third world country with an IPhones.
But to build a lot of new aircraft carriers you have money for?
Let's talk about that $7,500 out-of-pocket deductible, something absolutely unheard of until Obamacare, because no person in their right mind would ever agree to that. He was forced by the government to pay $6,000 in health insurance, and still had zero access to healthcare. However, due to reforms from BEFORE Biden took office, you can now get a month's vial of insulin from Walmart, for instance, for $73.
That's what happens when Bernie Sanders gets made out to be a socialist. Rest in peace Alex
I used to get health insurance for $400 per month. Then the federal government said they were going to "help". They instituted Obamacare. My insurance premiums went to $700 per month and my deductibles and co-pays sky-rocketed. Thanks, Mr Obama. Obama promised that he was going to cut health insurance premiums by an average of $2,500 per year. Instead mine went up by $3,600 per year. He swore, "If you like your present health insurance, you can keep your present health insurance. Period." Then he made the policies that I and many other Americans had illegal and we were forced to get new, more expensive policies. Are there problems with American health care? Absolutely. Did government efforts to fix it make it better? No, just the opposite. Do greedy insurance and pharmaceutical companies put profit over human life? Yes. But government officials put ideology and political power over human life.
And yet we give out narcon shots like they were candy. Talk about f'd up!
Yet we hand out narcon shots like they were candy. This is really f'd up.
Did a little checking and I am left very disturbed. How the heck can insulin, a medication that costs peanuts to make, be 7 times more expesive in the US as in the next most expensive country (Japan). But in Japan they have universal healthcare so it essentially is free there. This is a life or death medicine. (Shakes my head).
This makes me so angry. This is not how it should be! Greedy head of corporations should NOT be profiting at the expense of people's lives!
Heartbreaking! Beyond heartbreaking! It's disgusting that the US does this to their citizens.
The United States health care system is terrible. These things seem to happen on a daily basis there. However the USA is nowhere near the richest country in the world. And the wealth they do have they spend war mongering
My mom had liver failure and a serious infection. We called an ambulance, got her to emergency, spend a week in there, then got to another area for a week. She's still there to this day. How much did I spend? About $100, for my ubers to and from the hospital. I live in a third world country. Mind you, doctors in that hospital work in the best clinics in the country, but work in hospitals too cause in them you get the experience to be better. Some of them donate their time from 8am to 1pm, take lunch time and go to their paying job.
My oldest son is diabetic and will be 20 this year and knowing he is getting closer to the cut off age...well needless to say this is my biggest fear.
I have a cat that developed a tumor on his pituitary gland which in turned caused type 1 diabetes. Surgery to remove tumor would cost $12K plus whatever medication to treat. We elected to give him insulin (Lantus), same kind used for humans. I was shocked at the cost for a vial; $450. One day just looking for diabetic cat food came across https://canadianinsulin.com/ The cost for the same product is $185. I seem to remember that Trump attempted to get some legislation passed that would force the pharmaceuticals to charge the same price as the rest of the world.
I spend almost 900 per month to add my husband to my health insurance. He had to retire a bit earlier than we anticipated with a back and knee injury as a commercial electrician. He complains that he doesn't use the insurance (over 2/3 my pay) but at 62, god love him, we need him insured until we can get this retirement nonsense going. We've worked really, really hard our whole lives. It's not fair it should be this hard. Or.......a young man can die not being able to afford his medication. I know I share my damned albuterol inhalor with my younger son (age 27 now) so he can breath. I kind of like to have it for m'self sometimes as I also have asthma. Even when you work hard and do everything "right" you still can be scared every waking moment.
I am so tempted to set up smuggling insulin into the US and selling it for cost - a few dollars. Saving someone's life would be worth the potential jail term.
I used to get insulin for my car without a prescription. At WA cheaper than for me with one. THAT'S FU.
Now, ask yourselves why is Big Pharma now concerned with "health" yet raised prices of life saving insulin this year? Because they've profited & still profiting off Covid deaths. Stop worshipping Big Pharma!
I find that simply irresponsible. The land of opportunity kills its citizens by simply watching when people can't afford essential medicines. Sad.
Poorest country in the world. Wealth is measured by care, not $
Poorest country in the world. Richness is measured by the amount of care, not by $
Richest country?? There are richer and happier countries than the States
That is f****d. Here in Australia it's 100% covered by our Medicare
This is heartbreaking and horrible. I know pharmaceutical companies have a lot of R&D costs with new drugs, but insulin is not new. It's a complete screw job that it still costs this much.
The entire medical community system in the USS is so f****d up now snd it’s only going to get worse. Started in the 1990’s. I had a pretty heated debate with a nurse who was all for making medicine a “business” This is why your doctor is now called a “provider” (ridiculous) and why people are needlessly dying in droves. If you put the decision of care on the guy who writes the checks, you are not going to get the card you need. Why…THEY ARE PAID TO NOT WRITE CHECKS but to make money for their “business”. Honestly, I could get better more reasonably priced medic as l care from my veterinarian
I can't believe this happens in a first world country. It's sick enough when it comes to cancer treatment but never knew it was for everything including something that's easily managed with the right treatment.
This is simply disgusting, the patent was sold 100 years ago for $1 I believe, what kind of useless financial managers get the ok for this? It's manslaughter as far as I'm concerned. What a bunch of pricks in the USA. How can you look in the mirror and be pleased with yourself?
My friend couldn't get rid of her American citizenship fast enough. Here in Australia we have free doctors and subsidized medicines.
the high deductible as a side effect of Obamacare and the high cost of insulin is due to a Federal Regulation from the 1970s that if we repeal will lower the cost to less than $10 without insurance. However if he was earning 35k a year he would be eligible for 100% funded Medicaid with has Zero deducible, covered by govt, etc. If he was not on Medicaid that is a personal choice not to apply, and given how easy it is, and how hospitals auto sign up people who are eligible, that i am skeptical of this story.
Man, the US's medical pricing is insane. I thought our country's was already expensive enough to begin with.
The thing is if i am not wrong, generic medicines could be a life saver. But the American pharma medicines is too big. They will not allow. In India, we have generic medicines business which has managed to save lives. Some medicines are still high. But the govt from what i know wants to keep rates low for the people. American companies have an issue here.
This would not happen even in the poorest and underdeveloped countries in the world, yet the american citizens are all happy with the system how it is. Dont say "no we are not" - this is so severe that we would have heard all over the world of your protests, if really enough people would care.
I'm so happy that I dont live in that POS country that kurder their own people by putting such a ridiculous price for insulin, I dont even wanna think about what everything else needed with it costs. The government in US really should put a cap on how much profit medical companies should be able to have.
Let's not say anything about Biden wanting to give illegal ALIENS 450,000 apiece. What happened to taking care of Americans.
Again, you all keep voting against universal health care! It is within your power, US citizens, to change your country. No one else can, no matter how much you complain.
We don't have control. Our government is going to make whatever choice they want to make regardless of what we say or how we vote. There are millions of Americans that have signed petitions in solidarity for free health care. Our government can do it and get it done they don't want to. So stop acting like we are to blame. We have no control over the choices the people in power make. They are in power and make the decisions. They are supposed to work for us the people. We the people have been begging for free health care they won't do it.
Load More Replies...Please check your facts before you spread fake news, this has been debunked many times: 'The National Association of Community Health Centers said in its own statement that "overall prices of insulin and Epipens across the country are not affected by the Trump Administration regulation or the recent action by the Biden Administration."'

“A mind is prone to overreact to negative things relative to positive things; so people can use this to manipulate us, or we can use this to manipulate other people,” he explained. “If we understand this, we can prevent some of the negative effects and improve the quality of our social life.”

The Power Of Hate
There are so many great folks left out of history. Leprosy used to be a disease that would kill or maim so many people through history until a 23-year old black chemist named Alice Ball came up with a cure in 1915. Unfortunately she died the next year due to an accident. Who knows what she could have accomplished? https://scientificwomen.net/women/ball-alice-121
John Tierney, a journalist and the other co-author of this book, mentioned that the reason why we focus more on bad news is probably that it is aimed at the general public. “And the things that affect everyone tend to be negative—we’re all afraid of dying; we’re all afraid of being hurt. Focusing on those shared concerns is the easiest way to reach a mass audience.”
However, people on social media tend to share stories that are more pleasant. “That’s because the positive things we’re interested in—our hobbies, our cultural interests, the books we read—are more idiosyncratic,” he added. “Curating your news feed so that you’re not seeing so many negative stories can be good.”

Understanding and noticing our tendency to dwell on the negativities in life should help us to recognize that things are usually not as bad as we think. While it is important to share and discuss the problems we face in today’s world, it’s also vital to balance it out with the good stuff. So if you’re feeling a bit down, we’ve got you covered. All this stuff about the. price of insulin makes me so mad because the insulin patent from was originally sold for $1 with the understanding that cheap insulin would become available to all. For a long time the price of insulin was reasonable, retailing for $24 a vial in 1996. But due to no price controls the price has skyrocketed in the U.S. in the past couple years, because apparently the thought process is ‘why not gouge sick people?’ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5001219/

Well, I'm more thoroughly depressed now than when I started, so thanks for that.
If it helps you to feel better, in 2021 there have been great medical breakthroughs and treatments to help beat cancers, alzheimers, diabetes. Plus there have been great strides in ocean cleanup recently. It's a hard pill to swallow, but helps to be aware of horrific things in order to stop it. Progression in humanity isn't always beautiful and quite a dirty job.
Load More Replies...Humanity sucks - but there is often a lot more good stuff that doesn't get covered by the news
Indeed. Bad news always sells, so why put anything different?
Load More Replies...As depressing as it is....let it be a reminder we all have to keep fighting for justice and our planet. We can't continue this cycle. Our children deserve better than this.
I mean, we do need to know that all these things occur, but I'm seriously depressed now. Off to find a "redeem my faith in humanity" article. Or puppy videos.
Honestly I am disgusted by everything in this post!!! WE CAN CHANGE THIS!
Stuff like these are the reason why I'll never bring kids into this miserable world!
I have great grandkids. By the time they get to my age, there will no longer be a United States because we will violently implode from the inequality we see here today. Such a shame and so sad for words. There should be no First Amendment rights when you promote a lie. Liars such as Trump should be in jail for slander and libel. And broadcasters, such as Fox News should not be allowed to blatantly lie and should be shut down immediately. And then I woke up
Honestly, you'll be lucky if your kids make it to your age before everything implodes, never mind younger generations.
Load More Replies...Moral of the story: DON'T EVER TRUST THE COPS. They think they're above the law and they work for themselves and nobody else.
No. American cops. I was a cop. They were a good bunch who went into policing to try to help people. Not every cop is like American cops. Not all will obey s**t orders from above. Not all are power hungry.
Load More Replies...I stopped at the 41st entry. Wished I'd never opened this. Something needs to be done, I'm just not the one to do it. I wouldn't even know where to start.
Can we just hide this one? I don't want to see this one anymore. It breaks my heart
Cheese and Crackers, thanks for that load of garbage. What a way to start a Friday evening. I guess the only thing to do is to make sure to contribute something positive this weekend..... Now I think I might need to go lay down and reflect.
I can't go thru the rest of the list. I am literally depressed and crying now. We are the worst.
I have never read so many this comment is hidden on BP as in this! I dont know but I may assume that some of my comments will be slated as such but one must defend the underdog a all costs!
I had a medication that I needed to function that cost $25 per pill. I was supposed to take 2 pills per day, but I managed okay if I took 4 pills every 3 days. There were a couple of times when we had to decide whether we would pay for my medicine or the mortgage. There was a class action suit, and I got 12% of that money back. Over $8,000. The medicine is modafinil, by the way.
I always lose faith in humanity when I read these because they are so universal. We have many of the same problems and the corruption runs deep within the system. Imagine following all the right steps but still having to pay to get the end product.
I can't keep going. This is a very upsetting article. It doesn't mean you shouldn't keep publishing them, though. I wish you all peace and love. Xxx
I need to find an island with nobody on it and bury my head in the sand. My luck will mean the rising sea levels will drown me soon.
These posts have made me glad that I live in a country with a lower amount of racism and insurance paid helf care. It's not perfect, but atleast it's not America.
I have a story to add: So, we left my abusive father, he was high on drugs all the time, hit me, emotionally and mentally abused my mom and me, lied and endangered my brother and I. Well, once we left, he continued to harass us and show up at our house, drive by to scare me. We called the police, we got restraining orders, everything, yet the police never enforced the orders. Eventually the judge said he wasn't going to give us anymore. My mom got remarried and my father didn't like that. He drove by our new house, sent threatening texts and FB messages, sat outside our house while my brother nad I were there alone. I called the cops many times. Sometimes they never even showed up. My father wanted to kill us. He had said it in messages, on phone calls. Even told me how he would kill my stepdad. Yet the police still did nothing. I pretty much lost my faith in the legal system then. Anyways, thanks for coming to my TEDTalk
What I learned from this thread: The US healthcare system is a dumpster fire and most (not all) police officers abuse their power, got it 👍. All jokes aside, I really hate how most people are so greedy and self absorbed that the people who are actually good and helping society are suffering because of it :(
Now I want to fight humanity is it possible, how do I do it, and should I do it?
Hm, start by convincing some people to join you. If you have a large enough number of people, you'll be at the top of the world (not hinting to some people at all).
Load More Replies...I was already having a bad day. Why did I look through this whole page.
This is why people are confused about why I'm a misanthrope but get along with people, people are ok but mankind is a whole load of f*****g s**t.
I'm a introverted misanthrope who just can't deal with the smell of everything.
Load More Replies...The editors at BP hate their lives today, and not just today. This is hardly the first or only misery-inducing post they've scraped together for our delectation. Making the world a better place, yet again.
I think we need to see the other side to many of these stories. I’m well aware that humanity sucks. I’m also aware that there is always another side to every single story.
Obviously I'm not saying it's the only place this s**t applies to but it's shocking how many of these are well known to happen in USA. How anyone can claim it's the best country in the world with a straight face is beyond belief. The healthcare system is insane, I mean here insulin is free but all prescriptions are in Scotland, but England still charges something like £10 for prescriptions still give insulin for free. I couldn't even imagine being in a situation where I had to refuse treatment due to the cost. The system in USA is completely broken and folk need to open their eyes to the sad fact it's actually one of the worst
This article is mainly about America. It is one messed up country. Nothing related to the UK I notice.
