"This land is cursed; the animals hop not run, birds run, not fly and the swans are black not white. This land is cursed and I'll have nothing more to do with it," wrote William Dampier, one of the first Europeans to ever explore the continent of Australia, back in 1688.

In case you didn't know, 26 January is the national day of Australia. And what could be a more beautiful way to celebrate the occasion than by honoring all the little things that make this country the beautiful, interesting and absolutely bizarre place that it is. With that being said, Bored Panda invites you to look through some of our favorite photos shared by people on the interwebs proving that Australia isn't just another country, but a whole different world. As per usual, don't forget to leave a comment here and there and vote for your favorite pics!

They’re such characters. They hop instead of walk and are scared of nothing. They carry on making such a racket and this morning, you’d think they were all fighting with the noise (they often wrestle, as do some of our other parrots) but nope, each one was eating flower nectar (in a large tree where I work). Dunno what they were going off at. All quiet once they had finished their drink.

This makes me miss my 2 little misfits :'( We had 2 pet rainbow lorikeets until maybe 5 months ago. They were beautiful and loving (until they got over excited and started biting...). RIP Freddy and Lily <3 At least Freddy isn't lonely anymore. He was for a few months after Lily passed, but then he got out of his cage when the dogs were playing and they scared him :'(

Raiunbow Lorikeets - Agressive critters too. lovely to look at but they are the wilds hoolagans. If they could drive cars and wield baseball bats, no letterbox would be in one piece.

They are a fascinating bird, I have never really paid them any mind until the last few years when at any given time they can turn up. They seem to like pairings, even if you end up with 6 or more on your balcony they will be in pairs, they are also bullies, definitely a pecking order when it comes to who decides who gets to eat first. They are easily trained too which is amazing, they used to land on our kitchen window wanting to be fed, and I through gestures retrained them to the other side of the building to the balcony, so bizarre how easy to do. Some are very trusting will eat from your hand, some won't at all. Definitely way cooler than pigeons but also very messy so not good to get them to know you will feed them, it was getting up to 16 at one time that I had to stop :( now they torture me with guilt.

When we traveled from NSW to WA, one place we stopped at there were several of these parrots around the tent, they would sit on the doorway and almost swing upside down to see what was going on inside. Curious and very friendly.

Not really actually. So long as you don't bother the wildlife, other than the occasional food stealing or guilting you into giving them food, most creatures will leave you alone.
