First attempt my @ss.... It's impressive enough, no need to over aceturate by claiming this is a first try. Probably will get downvoted for this but you read it so many times. First try at (whatever skill that takes most people years of practice) and there it is, an Instagram worthy super pro result.

Ok but can you still accept the fact that there is a chance they ain't lying, it really is the first try, and the wife just looked up a lot of Pinterest and prepared a lot for it? I know people who ace everything their first try. It's not unheard of.

So much negativity on this post - the only thing that really stands out are the large salami/prosciutto flowers and there are only 3 and as a previous poster said they are actually fairly easy to create if you watch a youtube video or look on pinterest...everything else is just basic sorting and plating? I've ordered ridiculously creative charcuterie boards for work and family functions and they were way more over the top than this...this is easily and believably a 1st try (a good one at that and OP should be proud) but quit with the hate people...it's a meat and cheese board...if you're going to be upset about something trust me, there are so many other things going on right now that deserve that negativity more than this

Is there anything a great meal can’t fix? We don’t think so, and we sense that the few million members of this online community definitely agree. After all, food provides us with nourishment and comfort, and even one glance at a delicious-looking plate makes us jump with excitement. So when we look at pictures shared by these talented community members, we’re presented with a visual experience of food we can almost taste.

Close-up images of juicy and delicious food instantly make us drool and want to scroll down for more. Well, we’ve long heard of the chef’s maxim that sight matters as much as taste. Even the smallest details about a dish’s appearance like the shape and the texture can even alter the way we perceive its flavor and smell. We had a chat about this topic with Ellen Manning, a freelance journalist, writer, and founder of the Eat With Ellen blog in a previous interview. "As everyone says, you eat with your eyes as well as your mouth, so how your dish looks matters as much as how it tastes," she told Bored Panda.

Unpopular opinion, but do you eat spaghetti with bread? Or you eat them separately? To me, it looks like eating bread with tomato sauce on it and bread with garlic, so I don't eat pasta and bread.

Serving and eating from an attractive plate seems extremely important in the cooking universe. But when we asked Ellen about how we can make our food look more appetizing, she told us that a lot of this could come down to preference. However, "arranging food in a way that's pleasing to the eye is key — think of it as the main part of the dish being the centerpiece, with other elements around it designed to help it stand out, and to complement it in terms of color."

"It's important to think of appearance in three dimensions, not just two, so consider using height (that's why you see so many dishes with elements stacked up on each other). That said, sometimes less is more, so try not to make your plate too 'busy'. You don't want people to be put off by a plate of chaos."

I have to say, lavender ice cream is pretty but I don't understand the appeal of anything lavender in food. It tastes like soap. I'm sure there are people who can make it taste...not like lavender but then that seems like a lot of work to not make it taste like what it is so what's the point? I feel like it's such a gimmick.

According to Ellen, while there are many different ways to take food pictures, there are some handy rules we can keep in mind. "45 degree [angle] always works well but lots of people love a 'flat lay' — when you take a picture from above the plate," she said and added that often it's all about trial and error.

"Try different angles, or have different elements as the focus of your shot. You might think it would be the steak, but sometimes the best picture might be focused on the chips, with the steak behind them. Play around and see what works. But remember — while food photos are great, so is eating a hot meal!"

May be raw garlic. I make this kind of dip with soy sauce, a splash of sesame oil, thinly sliced onion or spring onion, chopped raw garlic, chopped chili peppers and some rice vinegar. Let it rest for 10 minutes to 1 hour, so it can become more flavorful.

But for the people out there who feel hesitant about their cooking skills, this can appear daunting. Some individuals seem to be born already wearing their apron and have a natural talent for creating something extraordinary in the kitchen. While it’s always fun to see gourmands in their element, this can put a damper on people who wish to improve their cooking skills, yet don’t know where to start. So let’s take a few steps back, shall we?

Although Ellen told us she’s no expert, she happily shared some of the most common cooking mistakes amateurs make and offered advice on how to avoid them. "From experience, I'd say the biggest cooking mistakes amateurs make are not planning and preparing properly, and not allowing enough time," Ellen said. "Even the very best chefs make sure everything is prepared in advance, and they know how much time they need to execute certain dishes."

"If you're less confident, it's even more important to do this and to build in a bit of extra time so you're not rushing and getting stressed. I've ruined many a meal because I tried to rush, didn't read the recipe in advance and get everything ready, then ended up trying to do too much in too little time, which inevitably causes mistakes," the blogger revealed.

As far as I know it's a Hawaiian dish. If I remember correctly, "poke" means something like "being cut into dice" which is referring to the cut fish that is traditionally served with this dish. It's western cuisine influenced by Japanese cooking.

Luckily, there are plenty of easy-to-follow cooking tips that can up your culinary game right away. And one easy way to avoid making a mess in the kitchen is to simply make a plan and stick to it. "Take time to read the recipe, to check you've got the right ingredients, and to plan what you need and what you'll need to do," Ellen suggested. "This is even more important if you're cooking several dishes at the same time. There's many an adage that says 'perfect planning prevents poor performance' — or words to that effect — and it's no different in the kitchen."

They're boiled eggs which are marinated after cooking. The marinade I've used is a mix of mirin and soy sauce.

The yolk is almost half-cooked which is the point. This looks a little short, but the marinade is well done as you can see in the white part of the egg.

this is nice because every time you see homemade chicken soup, the carrots are always huge and cut round. The veg is similar in size so it will cook properly with everything and I don't feel like I'm trying to eat a big ole' carrot. They do this with potatoes sometimes, too. Just cut them smaller!

Not a comment on this -looks great- but just in general. I watch a lot of cooking vids and there seems to be a thing with super undercooking bacon. This pic isn't bad but I've seen vids where they make breakfast sandwiches or something and the bacon is almost still raw. Am I the only one that would like it slightly more done? Not burned or dark...slightly more than in this pic. But is eating raw or slightly cooked bacon a thing?

I live in southcoast Massachusetts and there's a huge Portuguese population here. Food in this area is crazy amazing. There's nothing like it anywhere. Even if you go upstate, you won't find a lot there. It's really focused on this area. The first time I had Chinese food outside of this area I thought they made it wrong because our chow mien noodles are completely different. There are things you can get here you can't get anywhere else and if you grew up eating here, everywhere else just feels disappointing. Desserts in general are fantastic. Malasadas are my favorite but these type of donuts (filled with whipped cream, too) are sooooo good.

I love seafood-especially shrimp. I love seafood in things, too, like crab cakes, chowder or clam cakes. I'm embarrassed to say I've never had scallops because I'm just weirdly afraid of the texture. It looks like it would be gummy or something. I live right on the ocean so our seafood is super amazing and I feel like I just have to get over the fear and try one. It's like oysters-- same fear. I just can't get myself to eat one. It looks like a snot.

Maybe someone can help me... how do you get the edges to puff up? I've been trying my hand at making ny style pizza -- just at home I don't have a nice set up like this-- but I feel like I'm doing something wrong because the dough never puffs up on the edges like this. It just stays exactly where it is and gets hard. I'm using a very hot pizza stone, but I also tried just using a regular pizza pan, too, but the same result. I'm following the recipes I get but... I can't figure it out. So annoying.

I'm really into tacos lately and I've been making my own tortillas. I've always stayed away from Spanish, Mexican, Indian, etc. food because I really don't like spicy food and I've always just assumed these are generally spicy cuisines and I wouldn't enjoy them. I feel like it's limited me for so long. And a lot of times they are spicy but you can find ways to make a lot of items without that 3 alarm fire burn. An acquaintance of mine made homemade nachos -which I'd never had before. I've only ever had store bought chips with cheese and meat and veg...basic stuff- and they were amazing. I can't go back to store bought. It made me want to try other things and just see about trying to find alternatives to keep the heat out. It's opened me up to a lot of cuisines I had a fear of.

In most cuisines I've tried, the heat (and its intensity) is up to the cook first and the consumer second, but always subject to personal taste. Please continue your explorations and enjoy.

It's just the method of breading and frying. Typically in the US we don't fry beef so when you fry steak it's usually called either chicken fried or country fried steak. The breading used is the same for fried chicken too; flour and egg dredge.

Looks like Gordon skimped a bit on the duxelles but I'd still eat it.

I'm jealous of your edges. I keep trying to make pizza crust and it's not working out well. it never puffs up.

"00" flour. Make the dough balls 250-300gms a few hours, or the even the day before (cover and store in the fridge before letting them rise a few hours before cooking) and press out from the centre, pushing the air out to the crust, stretching rather than rolling out the pizza. Use semolina to stop the dough sticking while stretching it.Pizza stone, heated as hot as your oven will go. You tube is good.
