“Anti-Work:” This Facebook Group Is Throwing Punches At Late Stage Capitalism, And Here Are 30 Of Its Best Posts
The subreddit r/Antiwork has gathered a lot of support over the last year, especially since the beginning of the Great Resignation. And even though not all of the attention was positive, the buzz has certainly helped to spread its message, and even take the movement to other platforms.
There's a Facebook group called Anti-Work. It's not connected to the subreddit, but shares a lot of the same values. The group's 'About' section says it welcomes "all things related to anti-work and late stage capitalism", and you can definitely see a wide variety of topics in its posts.
From specific things like burnout and student debt to broader discussions on salaries and personal finance, continue scrolling to check out the most popular ones.

Actually, by over half the voters. It’s the ones who have a little and are afraid to lose it and therefore kick down on the poorer —- instead of demanding the obscenely superrich become just regularly obscenely rich.

Under communism- you will be forced to work for free, if they think that you are "rich" they will come and take EVERYTHING: all of you food, cows, chickens, your grain that you were planning to use next spring, your clothe and shoes. That is what happened to both of my grandparents and their parents in the USSR (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dekulakization), then if you will resist they will send you to Siberia 10 days by train where 3 out 7 children will die due to cold weather ( -25C inside the train cart). Or you can work for 50 years on a factory and when you retire your pension will be so small that you would have to collect bottles so you can afford to but 1 chicken one a moths ( and yes that is a real story of my grandmother and millions of other people). Or your parents will try to save money and keep them in a bank- and one day they all will be gone because government stole them from you- that is my story...1991 USSR.
What do you want? Communism? It killed 100 million people in the twentieth century. Socialism was terrible too. My country tried both, it was pain in the ass.
No. In capitalism no one cares whether a billionaire gets richer or goes bankrupt. If the latter happens it only means that he must have made a blunder of epic proportion and faced its consequences. Capitalism is a purely economic system with no social component, so it simply doesn't care for anyone, beggar or billionaire. Of course, rich people want other to believe that if they go bust, something terrible happens. But truth is that if its happens, the gap will be immediately filled by another industrious individual, because everyone wants a share of this pie. If a large company goes bankrupt it might even be for the better - the void is filled with several competitors that might be forced to make better offerings for employees and customers to make sure that they come to them and not to their competitors. Nature abhors vacuum. So does the market.

the mods may speak as they like, but the membership of r/antiwork thinks the anti-work philosophy is utopian b******t and a distraction from the rights and dignity of people who HAVE to work.
To learn more about the group, we contacted its administrators and moderators and they were kind enough to have a little chat with us.
"Fundamentally, the idea of Anti-Work is that people should choose to be productive on their own terms, not as a result of coercion or having their stability threatened," the team told Bored Panda.
"The underlying message of the Anti-Work philosophy is that the connection between survival and employment status or productivity levels must be eliminated."
I've always said to people who said money doesn't buy happiness: "money may not buy happiness but I'd rather cry with a roof over my head and food in my fridge."
So true. We (Australia) had $120m lotto jackpot go off last night, and ahead of this some news sites were quoting people who had won lotto, then lost it all in a matter of years, saying things like "winning lotto isn't everything. I lost it all and now I'm broke". Bih what? You wasted your money! Winning it wasn't the problem, your lack of smarts was.
It's absolutely true that money cannot buy happiness. It can buy absolutely everything that I need to be happy...home, food, toys, heat, hydro and security. I just wish people would stop trotting that absurd expression out.
I tried to come up with SOMETHING, but literally every problem I have now would get at least better with money.
That's what they say, but I'd like to find out for myself. Everyone send me your money & I'll let you know how I make out.
This statement was created by corporations, the rich and religion. Be happy with your lot in life whilst money will never make you happy. Yeah bull, my life is phenomenally better and I’m extremely happy now that my salary is in the 6 figure range. I’m by no means rich but definitely comfortable
My husband died 5 weeks ago. He left me a considerable amount of life insurance. I have found a problem money cannot solve.
They didn't actually commit arson - the high school robotics team actually built the wheelchair for the kid. More like a major burn in that the team "burned" the insurance company by defeating them, or by showing them up for being a$$holes.

I had quit my job then found out they are pushing all my work onto the person who worked under me. Asked them if they were getting a pay increase now that they had to do two people’s jobs. Unsurprisingly the answer was no. Any guesses why I left.
I was doing the jobs of three people at one of my jobs years ago. I didn't even ask for a raise, I kept begging for help, asking management to make people who are just as trained for the job as I was to actually do it, not just pass it off repeatedly to me. All I got were empty words. But guess who got in trouble when I decided to stop putting effort into my work and it noticeably suffered? Not the people who said they'd start helping and never did, that's for sure.
Load More Replies...I just quit today for same reasons. They “gifted” me with a “promotion” more work with zero increase. A whole list of new work when I asked about compensation I was told no we are not in a position to give you a raise. They say this to me as if I’m not the one that picks up anywhere between 250K-500K a day and deposit the cash daily. Yet they want to pay me $15/hr. Nope I said okay so this is where I put my 2 weeks notice, I think we are done here. Thank you for the “promotion”.
More I read of a minimum guaranteed payments like a responsible social security the more I like it along with universal health cavelike most first world countries.
Errr... If the workers has higher costs of the work, they just charge their customers more. If they are employed, then it should be their employer who provides them everything they need to do the job. If they do not, there is little reason to work for them instead of starting one's own business.
"Our Facebook group is not affiliated with r/AntiWork," the people behind the group said.
While the subreddit is quite old (it was created in 2013), its Facebook spin-off is still fresh — it came about in October 2021 "as a result of needing to create a digital community tailored specifically for Facebook users."
"In our group, we have people from all backgrounds," the admins and mods said. "Writers, frontline nurses, school teachers, line cooks, truck drivers, forklift operators. To name just a few."
Was talking about this exact thing today with my boss. She said at least we have some diversity in our leadership team, I pointed out that the people they report to are all white men.
Who do you think owns 95% of the wealth of the country?
Load More Replies...Whoa, a rational person ^. I don't see many of you anymore. You know, you are always welcome to come back and live in this world once again.
Load More Replies...Stop attributing worth to meaningless identifiers. Why the hell does anyone think it's ok to have a reality in which someone asks "was i the best person for the job" and know the answer might be "no, not at all....but you were the best minority/female/trans/homosexual candidate, and we have diversity quotas to fill"
I have seen this in sooo many companies. I used to work for a large tech company in the US. They kept touting their diversity. 90% of my coworkers were people of color (mostly south and east asian), Until you got to the management level. All white men. Every single one of them. Even low level managers. Not one woman, not one person of color.
This depends on a company. The idea of diversity is pretty young in USA (it is better to some extent in Europe), so you can't expect that all of the sudden people of e.g. various ethnicities will magically appear on all level of previously all-male, all-white company (and, of course, diversity itself is meaningless - it is lack of racist/sexist bias that counts). If the company is honest and not only hires various people but promotes them in accordance with their merits then after some time there will be diverse people on all levels. Think of small amount of women who received Nobel prize despite large percentage of scientists being female. This is because Nobel prizes are being received by people with several decades of experience, and STEM was largely dominated by men 20-30 years ago. But said ratio is gradually increasing.
And there have been quite a few Nobel prizes awarded to men that should have actually gone to women.
Load More Replies...This is exactly what happens at orgs that focus on 'diversity' and put no resources into equity and inclusion.
Read this story how a guy was studying leadership techniques and felt really uncomfortable, cause the manuals explain how to deal with an employee who's a minority member and not how to deal with it when the boss themselves is a minority member. So clear the manuals are written by white dudes to white dudes
realistically, what did you expect? an overall minority suddenly be the majority in the company?
Kind of like an ex-boyfriend of mine when I broke up with him. He thought he could hurt me by saying “Besides I like sex and you don’t”. I shot right back, saying “Oh no, I like sex. Just not with you”.
The idea that someone should be paid less for working from home when the company is benefiting from the use of YOUR electricity and YOUR internet connecting is beyond astounding.
Plus the fact that the company is using less electricity etc.
Load More Replies...Yup, all of these! I quit my job yesterday because of rampant nepotism(my manager hires ALL of her 'work friends' kids) and favoritism(there's a guy they literally have to call at 12:50 almost every day, he's scheduled 12pm-6pm, and he's 23! That's not doing anyone any favors!). No raise for the new year, no appreciation ever, why bother? I'll find another low paying job that maybe has a little bit more compassion for workers. We had multiple Covid outbreaks and weren't told or offered tests and I live with a high risk individual. To heck with my former employer!
When I wfh, my work hours are not recorded. I keep track, and I'm trusted not to eff with that. And, as I value being trusted, I don't do so. Would they actually spy on me, I'd use a lot of paid time in education about programming to outsmart the tracking and never again have less than 10 hours straight a day (the max we can book to one day).
The top brass still believe they are indispensable and they can go the way of all slime and we will do just fine. Yes, it takes some guys at the top and it takes the worker his life.
"..to spy on employees working from HOME" Is it only me who finds this creepy?
Similarly I hate when they ask what your salary expectations are. Why don’t you tell me what you’re willing to pay and I’ll tell you if I’m willing to work for that?
Because they want you to say something low so you'll get the job and they can underpay.
Load More Replies...Interviewer: "What are your salary requirements?" You: "What is the salary range for this position?" And if the interviewer asks how much you want a second time... You: "I'll be happy to discuss salary at the time of an offer." Usually shuts them up.
If you get an offer, you've probably been through several interviews already. Wages should be in the job posting, or discussed during the first interview. If they have crap pay, its best to know ASAP and not waste time with additional interviews.
Load More Replies...I once had a job interview where the manager was 45 minutes late. When he walked into the room we went back over everything and then after another 20 minutes I finally asked what the salary/benefits/sick days were. He offered me the job to start in two weeks. Then two days before I was supposed to start he called me and told me I didn't get the job after all, despite getting a letter of intent, because "the first thing" I asked was money/sick days. Keep in mind I was 31 at the time, but he talked to me like I was a 16 year old applying for my first job and that you shouldn't ask what you're gonna be paid till after you get hired.
Yeah I hate this, I don't apply if they dont post pay because it means it’s low. I find it rude to not post the pay and try to trick people into wasting their time with a series of interviews only to reveal that they can only pay garbage. But if they don’t post it it’s for a reason, guess we just gotta read between the lines.
If I go for an interview, I will probably have to use up some of my holiday to cover my absence. If an employer won't tell me the pay range, then I'm not going to use up my holidays. And if they need my current salary to determine the pay range then they are underpaying some of their employees - and it might end up being me.
The company I work for is advertising that it is hiring, with boasts of a 'competitive salary' despite other companies paying a much higher rate for the same job.
I had an interview. I asked about the pay and this woman tells me 'We do't talk about payment in the first meeting'. Yeah, well good bye and I''ll be in touch blablabla i.e. F*ck off.
I've googled job openings in Canada and it surprised me how few actually mention a salary indication. Lots of jobs openings in NL also don't mention any, and if you can't give me a salary bandwith you're not worth my time.
I wouldn't recommend sending d**k pics. That can be classified as using company communication channels to disseminate pornography and might got sender in trouble with both the employer and law enforcement (depends on jurisdiction of course). But otherwise it is a good idea to not answer. Or, if you like your work you might check but insist that you'll get it done when you start your work week. It is called working week for a reason.
this. another potential problem is a sexual harassment report. it would be just as effective & less risky to just send a stock image of spaghetti instead of lewd photos. it could cost him his job & get him in legal trouble.

However, they pointed out that the Anti-Work group is explicitly anti-capitalist and supports the creation and expansion of unions and worker cooperatives, as well as believes in the need for workplace democracy.
“As a society, we have the ability to provide for humanity's needs, to give people a base layer of support and stability to encourage productivity without coercion," Maxwell Neely, the Anti-Work group admin and mod team's designated Press Liaison said.

Load More Replies...Ah you see the competition is between the company owners, with their game of 'my payroll bill is less than yours, despite me having more employees...'
Whenever I see "competitive wages", I like to imagine there's just one, glorious, exceptional paycheck every two weeks, and the entire office has to battle for it in a Roman style arena. "Aww, I'm sorry, Dave, but Mark from accounting is taking the money today. Better luck on those mortgage payments next time"
I learned not to listen to this. Mostly when I found out that the kid on his first job, hired months after me and his mother was a manager, was being paid more than me and I had nearly 10 years of experience on him. I may have become a bit of an unreasonable employee once I heard that.
Remember, if the salary is competitive, they're scoring like golf.
I'm glad that where I live, when you apply for a job, there's at least two meet-ups. One to discuss the job, the other to discuss pay and benefits.
The pay and benefits should be in the job or in the attached job description. That way if they aren't what someone wants, they don't waste everyone's time applying for the job.
Load More Replies...Because they want to pay as little as they can, and if you don't push and negotiate....
When contracted with a government office, all salaries or hourly wages were available. Like the military, every one was on a pay grade. Unfortunately, pay grades were determined by class's and time on the job. Had little to do with skills or personal productivity.
I agree, and that's one thing I disagree with my upper management. I keep telling them we need to be transparent about salary ranges when we post a job opening. I'm told it opens the company up to legal actions if we end up hiring someone not qualified for the position. I'm not sure I believe that, but then again I'm not a lawyer.
Yeah, surely that's just down to poor background checks and dodgy references?
Load More Replies...Competitive Salary is supposed to mean that it pays the going rate for that job in that area, but what it really means is that it pays for experience. There are experience brackets that you will fit into, so make sure you put all of your experience on your resume, because they won't accept the experience verbally to gauge what they'll pay you. I have 30 year's experience; most brackets top out at 10+, but I just update my resume to show all 30 years.
You earn per hour of work (regular workers), you are paid per contract agreement (management).

It's always been my opinion that the top brass should work the lowest positions and live on the pay. A cashier's salary probably wouldn't buy the executive's lunches for that pay period.
About 15 years ago the company of Phoenix University was being paid 360 million dollars a year. Tell me how anyone can be worth a million dollars a day?
This is the answer to employers that claim they "care about the employees mental health." They don't realize that crappy working conditions are part of the problem...or more likely they do and just don't give a flock.
Even that's better than when a friend of a friend started crying in the team meeting because the broken a** computer system was making work impossible and the bosses were complaining to everyone about the delays. She got a warning for disrespectful behavior. Superb work environment if you ask me. A more realistic version of, what happens when you point out the emperor has no clothes

You should see a shock on their faces when I tell new ones that this is what we do. One lady even cried, because for all of her life she got only 2 week vacation a year. 2 weeks is not nearly enough to get a break from work, especially if it is mentally challenging work.
And dropping dead cuz you can't afford treatment isn't a retirement plan.
Me quitting my job after constantly saying I'm stressed out because of how abusive people are about pandemic rules and HR just sending out links to internet therapy.
And....we can't afford therapy or antidepressants if we're underpaid and poor...
Therapy's only goal is to get you to realize you are trying to live "outside your assigned status". Once you decide that this is all there is and that is good enough, then there will be definite attacks on even that way of life.

Load More Replies...It will be. Wages gradually rose and work-time fell for decades until the 40-hour working week was established as the good compromise between time dedicated to work and earnings allowing decent life. But with the increases in productivity brought by technology, we might sooner or later see further decrease in working time. But the bad news is that this will happen predominantly in rich, economically independent, stable countries.
Main office worker: “Otto, where are you working today?” Me: “I am at a customer site, on location, and I have a sales call.” Customer site worker: “Otto, where are you working today?” Me: “I’ll be at the main office, and I have a sales call.” Reality: “Otto, where are you?” Me: “I’m at home working on my deck today, and I don’t have a sales call.”
If given a reasonable time, workers line and pencils, will accomplish the same amount of work in the time allowed.
It’s not an overwhelming success. Authorities failed to anticipate that fewer work hours per person would necessitate hiring more workers. They did not increase the budget to compensate for that. Their recent takeaway? "We perhaps should not have shortened the hours." Ffs.
Worked at a Police department. Not a cop or dispatcher. Worked Records. 4 day, 10 hour day. Very nice.

The group is trying its best to remain civil. It condemns all discriminatory language and actions towards other people, including but not limited to racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ageism, and ableism. Basically, if you want to shout at someone and insult them for disagreeing with you, this is not a place to do so.
However, as can be expected, sometimes trolls join to derail discussions, insult members, and generally be unpleasant. This forces the admin team to take action, but they say that most of the group members are "awesome people with valuable insights, and stories worth telling."

Last time I shopped at Walmart, I noticed the shelves are all empty and wondered if I'm supposed to stock the shelves now too. I tried to ask an employee, but damn, I didn't see one the entire time I was there. The sign on the back-room doors read, "Employees Only" and I just didn't know, I mean, am I an employee? Am I a self-service provider? Someone from Walmart, please answer me; are we supposed to stock the shelves?
I detest the self-checkout & refuse to use it wherever possible, plus I rarely shop at Walmart anyway. Last summer, I was in a small Walmart when we were on a road trip & they had ONE cashier stand where there would be an actual cashier & it was closed. The only way I could check out was to use the damned self-checkout station. And I've noticed the lack of employees on the floor too.

I think the real reason is robots are even more unreliable than humans. I mean, they're supposed to do the job perfectly once and for all after they're installed ; on paper it looks good, cost-effective, robots won't complain, call in sick, have children, not even retire etc. But companies that replace their employees with robots are likely to get ripped off by vendors. Robots will not be actually suitable for the required tasks, and / or glitch out and break down way too often. And you can't replace them as easily as you can find another human worker. You'll wait for weeks to get them fixed. In the end it won't be cost-effective at all. Another side effect which companies usually fail to care about, but is concerning in the long term, is that robots won't reinvest the money they cost in the local economy, like living humans would do. Plot twist : my workplace has been partly using robots for years, and it's a running gag.
we had a robot at work for less than a week. I'm honestly a little sad it didn't take my job because now I still have to go there..

In America, poverty must always be first and foremost a moral failing. How else will we justify living on the backs of the miserable but by claiming their misery is the result of their own flaws?
But this is exactly the way brainwashed Americans keep in line. Keep working and giving more than you get & someday you’ll be as rich as the people you serve. In the meantime it’s your duty to preserve the status quo so that all the good things in life will be available to you when you get here instead of allowing a bunch of undeserving proles to take it away from us.
That just sums up how Christianism (and its promise of afterlife reward for all the pain) so easily hosted the lies and delusions of capitalism.
When I became a boss, it was because I had put in 90 hour workweeks, busted my ass, worked harder than anyone else, no personal time, etc. People always want to look at their boss as if they've got it so good but sometimes you don't realize the work and stress that goes into that. I had this girl who worked for me who complained about how broke she always was and how unfair it is. So I offered her a position as a manager but she was like 'no way. I don't want to do more.' And it drove me crazy because a big part of me does believe you should have to be better and earn a position and work hard. But it took me years to realize but the problem isn't bosses/underlings, working hard or not; it's that no one should HAVE to go through what I did to be able to live comfortably. You shouldn't have to choose between being miserable or not living in a place that has cardboard on the windows. And the pay/living disparity has gotten so bad that those are the options. And THAT is the real problem.
Just adding to this that the shift in the country to working an unreasonable amount of hours has also caused part of this problem. It used to be you could work an 8 hour workday and have 2 days off. Most jobs these days are now a standard 50-70 hour workweek with half hour breaks and 1 day off. Usually 9-10 hours a day. This is stressful even in a sit-down job nevermind being on your feet all day. It's unreasonable to make minimum wage for that. And it isn't about being skilled or not, educated or not...people with degrees, skilled workers...everyone is having issues finding work to pay them enough to afford their skyrocketing mortgage or rent. The middle class is disappearing and it's becoming Rich or poor, no in between.

Also, the 40/hr week was a major improvement on the "you have no rights at all so you work as much as we say" week which was the norm at the time. Now we have the 40/hr week to start improving on.
even more radical idea - let the minimum wage do what it was intended to do when it was instituted - be enough pay that a single income family, or person, could afford a house, a car, all the insurance they need, food, entertainment, college tuition for at least two kids, and at least one two-week, destination vacation a year. That is what minimum wage paid for when it was instituted. If the GOP really wants to go back to the "good old days," you're gonna have to pay your employees like it's the good old days - a decent salary, healthcare over and above instead of our of their check, and a nice fat pension they can retire with.
At least Unions got us a 5 day work week. Before that it was 6 Y/O working 7 days a week with time off (maybe) for church.

I'm sorry, I'm a tipped worker and making less than minimum wage. This is allowed because of current laws in place for Tipped workers. If you want me to clean your bathrooms start paying me minimum wage at least, the same you pay the cleaning staff

At a fast food place I worked at, the boss posted the "If you can lean, you can clean" on the break room wall. Someone wrote directly underneath it, "If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball." Not all heroes wear capes.
The irony of running out of work because you're efficient and being called lazy. That said, cleaning is never a bad option though. It's often disregarded in daily tasks.
"Exit interview" my @rse. If I'm fired, I'm outta here. Please feel free to proceed without me.
Exit interview after being fired is an odd one. Interviewer: Why did you decide to leave? You: I didn't Interviewer: What could we have done differently? You: Not told me to leave.
Oh, believe me, companies in the U.S. definitely do exit interviews when they fire someone, especially if there's a contract or NDA involved. They want you to fill out & sign some forms, and yes, they absolutely ask a bunch of moronic questions. Then they hand you your final check & have someone escort you out the door.

But still, he cannot send them nothing, because then they will be "new" employer ;). He can just do the work "from beggining", for the same amount of hour it took first time at least.
Load More Replies...I’ve never heard of a company doing an exit interview with someone who has been fired. That is actually a forward-thinking company if it’s true.
If someone is fired who has a contract &/or NDA, they definitely do an exit interview with HR. The company wants forms filled out & signed, & they have all kinds of questions. And they are absolutely covering their a$$es, 100%.

Communities like this one seem like a natural response to the latest developments in the job market. Two years into the pandemic, people across the globe are tired. Poor mental health and burnout are common, particularly among low-wage and essential workers.
This prolonged period of uncertainty has made many re-analyze the role their employers play in making matters worse; record numbers of workers are leaving jobs in search of better options.
If that's how companies view their employees in the US, I think you guys need to remind these "bosses" about the reason behind your civil war and why your country fought the English for independence.

"The Greatest Generation" is mostly gone. They now have to deal with people who were not brought up with the thought that one job can provide for a family, stay at home Mom and college. Every job I ever applied for I got, and the wages were always more than I could ever want. I've never had to struggle a day in my life to pay the bills, raise the kids or, you know, eat. I'm sick of this boomer sh!t. "Baby boomers"are not the problem, just like Millennials, or GenZ are not the problem. The problem is the rich dealing to the rich, and keeping the poor down. Every damned government on this planet is a fücking oligarchy, no matter what they pretend to be, and every time they convince you that the problem is not them, but instead is some scapegoat group, then they win. Again! It's not boomers, or immigrants, or blacks, or browns, or whites, or Muslims, or Christians, or any other collection of humanity who are simply struggling to get by. It's the fücking billionaires!
I don't understand this. I am 59. I have been laid off. So has almost everyone I know. Not a single one of us owns their own home. We have trouble feeding ourselves, paying our bills, and making rent. My heating is just as expensive as yours. My 10 yr. old car is nickel and dime-ing me to death, but I can't afford a new one. I clip coupons if I want a special shampoo. The year of your birth doesn't automatically make you financially secure or solvent. Get used to it kids, that's how life works if you aren't wealthy.
The whole idea of 'Millenials vs. Boomers' is just a propaganda intended to drive a wedge between the generations to further erode the social cohesion. People who create it portray 'boomers' as people who were rich and 'ruined economy' through greed, even though the vast majority of 'Boomers' weer just average and struggled as much as young people do today. If economy was ruined, it was ruined by a small group of greedy rich people, not the masses of hard-working old folks. Sometimes older people might be out of touch. In 1970s the degree was almost a sure-fire way to get a good job (heck, even a philosophy major was a good idea due to the amount of new colleges open during the times of conspicuous consumption in 1980s). Today market got saturated and employers are more picky. In 1970s blue-collar work were in high demand, because they made basically everything. But when China opened its markets, everything is suddenly made abroad, forcing factory workers out of work. And so on...

Don’t forget getting through multiple interviews only to find out the job pays a dollar more than minimum wage. Or endure a bunch of “pre-interviews” plus a few tests along the way, then being told they’re putting your name on a list of potential hires, and you have to wait until you get to the top of the list before they interview you again—-to see if you’re still interested (when applied to TSA several years ago, I was pre-interviewed and had to pass several tests over the course of several months, then after 5 more months of total silence from them and deciding to give up on them, I was asked to come in and actually interview for the position. I got it, and quickly hated it—-I’m not a paranoid gun crazy who joined the orangeanus cult, so was considered suspect (FFS!)—-but managed to put in 5 years before quitting).
I have. And I used "modern advice,"too. But no one would hire me because of my age.
They don't want you to discuss your wage... because they don't want you to find out you actually deserve more.

I had to work out the redacted company from the second label cropped out at the top. Once I did, I'm now unsure if it's cool to comment it.
If everyone knew what the job was being paid, then everyone could make reasonable decisions about staying in their current position. Throughout my life good people - long term, reliable employees, the backbone of a company - have made much less than new hires. This creates a salary environment where you can only get comparable wages with new hires if you leave your job. All that expertise...... You would think it would be better valued.
This! I'm 37 and I've never received a second of loyalty from a workplace. Going above and beyond, giving 110%, as they say, has never been rewarded with anything of significant value. Don't let them trick you into giving them more work for free.

I must admit that I've been Office Spacing my job for a while. Just enough not to get fired.
The only problem with this is how do you put a weight on how your pay relates to your job? It’s all subjective. If a surgeon makes $300,000 per year, is that amount enough to remove someones kidney and then go on to do heart surgery on another person that same day, and then repeat that process every other day? Not to mention continue to pay for university loans. And what about if you own your own company? You still (should) give yourself a salary. Are you not going to do the best work for your own company? What if you work at an animal shelter? If you chose to work there and say they are only paying you $5/hour, does that mean you are going to let the animals sit in filth and not feed them? I feel that if you are a person like the one tweeting, you are not going to be going anywhere in life. Not in a career, and not personally as a human being.
A surgeon who makes $300,000 a year is not one of the people this post is talking about! And also not someone working at an animal shelter, because I suppose and hope, that the people working there have the best intent of the animals in their hearts, regardless their pay, which should still be worth their work!

I agree but am really disappointed that it's come to this. I enjoyed going to work because of my co-workers and the projects that required extra effort and the sense of getting something done well.
Especially don't provide ideas to improve production or any positive change because your boss will take credit for it anyway.
I was once 'counseled' because I came to work only 10 minutes early and left on time (trying to get across town to get home!). Many companies I have worked for frowned unless you stayed at least half an hour late. If businesses can get the job done with free labor, they won't ever adapt to paying people for their time or hiring enough employees to do the job without offloading the work onto current employees.
Fundamentally changing the way employers think sounds unlikely, but we are experiencing an unprecedented shake-up in terms of how workers do their jobs and the kinds of conditions they are expecting in return.
It's obvious that many people are at their breaking points, and there are already signs that companies who fear widescale quits are starting to respond with improvements. But if groups like Anti-Work continue to gain numbers, who's to say they can't take us even further?

He was an attorney who advised mostly middle class NYer's about their careers. He starts his book by saying that most people accumulate wealth in America by work, Speculation or Inheritance. Truly, though, many of us don't gain wealth from Speculation or Inheritance, so we need to make the most out of our work. Then he guides people through being clear-eyed and non-sentimental about work. He said that only the Baby Boom generation linked work to having "Meaning" most people worked for $. In some ways, working for money (not unethically or illegally) is still the best way to go. So you find your meaning in your faith or philosophy but be an engineer in life or try to keep jumping to make more money, etc. It is an interesting read. I still became a clergy person, but it has helped me see past the B.S. that people (even in my work) will try to put on my work when I require a livable wage. It helps one to think critically about needing to work, be treated well at work and be reasonably happy in life. I may need to re-read it.
What folks need to realize about these catch-phrases, is that those who want to exploit labor (your life and physical self) want to discourage any change that will not maximize their profits to stockholders. Look up those terms and make your own decisions.

Every speculative investment is a pyramid scheme. Capitalism is not, because it is based on producing actual stuff with an actual worth. Crypto is just a thing you buy to someone smarter than you because you hope you will be able to sell it for an even higher price to someone dumber than you.
Not really. There are two types of capitalism. A good, old production capitalism, based on the production of goods, provision of services, supply and demand. And there is a speculative capitalism, where value is created out of the thin air and is unrelated to any practical effects of anyone's work. It is not new (it has been satirized even in 18th century as 'wind selling') but only recently it became a major market force. And this speculation, like any other form of such activity is eventually detrimental to market and general consumer.

Just to drive the point home - in many economical models the lack of the ability to save money is a definition of poverty.
There is also societal pressure to spend as well. Over time, things considered as essential shifted up the scale. Now I'm not saying the basic necessities aren't. But these days, you need all sorts of stuff that were considered a luxuries in years past. For example, a phone and data plan. Wages however aren't even keeping up with this shift. And, being frugal is seen as some kind of leprosy by most of society.
People are not deficient or lazy because they don't save. Being poor is expensive, everything costs more to live and we don't have system that lets you just dig out by hard work and effort. We just keep blaming the victims for the crime, that way no one looks into the system and sees that it needs to change.
She is a liar. A privilege is an advantageous rules that only applies to you, it is not a fortunate circumstance. Privilege implies discrimination, not coincidences.
Fine, so call it an advantage or benevolent circumstance. That doesn't change the fact that people are not deficient because they don't save. Being poor is expensive, it costs a lot more to live and we don't have an environment that lets you just dig out by hard work and effort. The system isn't responsive.

Yes it is not enough. $15/hr may seem like enough, but where I live in Southern California, one bedroom apartments start at $1800 a month. Add to that gas, electric, car payment and insurance (very limited public transportation out here), food, health insurance and other necessities and there's not enough. Working full time at $15/hr is $2400 a month. After taxes, there is simply not enough to even pay for the basics. And try to support a family? It's just not possible. I always made quota, sometimes even getting 30+ units a day just from my work alone. Those are self-sustaining synonyms. If your provider rises its prices, you must rise yours... Then your clients do it too, etc... It's called inflation and it is a reaction to circumstances that sustain these said circumstances and lead to the same reaction against. Nobody decides deliberately to create inflation, it is a natural phenomenon.
Luxottica's profits soared in 2021 when compared to 2019. Still in the middle of the pandemic, they are making billions more per quarter than they did in their previous best year to date. You wanna know how much of a raise their store-level staff got in 2021? about 17 cents CAD. I can't believe I supported that disgusting company for 15 years.
When my grandmother was put in assisted living, I donated her formal clothes to an organization that provides them to people who need to look nice for job interviews but can't afford nice outfits.
Yeah... So what? It almost sounds like someone was trying to make a point, but pathetically failed.
Yeah nobody wants to work anymore!/s We all just want to frolic in fields of wild flowers and tickle puppies all day.
This is why I think the current economic model isn't sustainable. Eventually you run out of people who will work at that price unless you keep certain countries in poverty. And then there is the issue of fuel for logistics, that clearly isn't infinite.
If it isn't sustainable, it will collapse. Hold on tight and enjoy the ride.

Yes. It would be great if we lived in a world where unions weren't necessary - but we don't.
Load More Replies...No, it wasn't. Single income households were the exception by the mid 1980s. Thanks, Reagan.
Yes. I was looking forward to Reagan's big "tax cut". My first pay check after the cut went int effect was 10% lower. He increased the medicare and social security taxes taken out of everyone's paycheck.

Plumbers, and electricians, and carpenters make FINE money! Some college grads work at Target.
I paid $66,000 for my house (in Louisville, KY) in 1990. It now has an assessed value of $197,000.
50's, 60's, 70's mostly. Hyperinflation and double-digit mortgage rates killed the dream. Texas and Arab oilmen sure made bank though.
The Simpsons started as a short on the Tracy Ullman show in 1987. Presumably Homer purchased the house some time before that, seeing as he's supposed to be in his early forties (judging by his appearance). You can assume he purchased the house probably in the late 1970s. The median home price in the United States in 1977 was $48,000. Adjusted for inflation, that's $195,000. The 30-year interest rate in 1977 was 8.85% (it hit 12% in 1979). So in today's dollars, a house purchased in 1977 would have a monthly mortgage payment of $1,499. Now the median price of a house in the US is $334,000, but interest rates are currently at 4.5% (up sharply from a year ago). This puts the median 30-year mortgage at $1,692 per month. Keeping in mind that I didn't include down-payments, or taxes and insurance (all of which would need to be paid both then and now). It's not the housing prices really, it's the fact that wages have been stagnant for 40 years, while inflation has not been.
I should also point out that the US is a large place, and median housing prices fluctuate drastically, as does median income.

Having a strong work ethic and willingness to do that work well isn't a failing. Not being paid what that work is worth is where the failure lies.
No, work ethic is a very good thing. It's just that most of us would love the freedom to apply more of that work ethic to something outside of this capitalist machine.
Work ethics is not the same as working without fair compensation. You need work ethics to acquire new skills and hold responsibilities. And both of those are your leverage.
Absolute nonsense!! The lack of work ethic is certainly not the route you want to take. I don't understand why this website promotes this crap. If you have no work ethic, you have no educational ethic either. (why try? right?) And that's considered a good thing here. unbelievable. Please don't raise children.
Making a job a salaried position is another excellent way to steal worker's contributions! Then there is no overtime, no limit. sigh.....
people have been brainwashed to believe that unions are either a communist plot to or a gangster skam...just look ate media we grew up with...making unions look like a scam was the best scam the rich ever pulled
One of the best plotlines about unions is in the TV show Superstore. It shows just how desperate the company is to prevent the employees from unionizing, to the point where they call in an ICE raid.

If there is no ethical consumption under capitalism, there is no such thing as theft. I, personally, won't steal from those poorer than me, but if you're richer than me - watch your bag.
I'm not a thief. I don't need to be. I have the skills to survive on my own without a penny to my name. In fact that's my true retirement plan.

This is pretty freakin' sad. While wages should go up, the cost of living should not, and those receiving statements aid because they cannot or do not have the ability to work should not be getting bare minimum to live off of.

According to my labour law classes, no... But it depends on which state you live in.
Yes and no. People assume that they are entitled by law to have a lunch break, but federal labor laws do not support that. Some state laws, and company policies allow for lunch and bathroom breaks, but federal labor laws do not grant the right to a lunch period.

Non, no! Carry that to it’s logical end. Billionaires would now be Gazillionaires.

Also she had no rights and was, by law, a babymaker that should obey instead of think. That doesn't sound too appealing either, to be honest.
Well, my ancestors didn't sit at a screen desgning equipment for industrial applications either, but got dirty harvesting cabbage and potatoes (my literal ancestors did, 3 generations ago), and whenever someone died, my Great-Grandma made floral ornamets to help get by a little better. We should pick what to condemn and what to praise. They also never shat into a flushable bowl of water, just saying...
And they also had bad crop years, hunger , disease , low life expectancy, high infant mortality rate, etc. What’s your point ?
The Simpsons analogy about Homer being able to buy a home on one salary, shows the low information, false deductions people make to push their agenda. Homer got the money from his father Abe to buy the house, by having his father sell his home. Then Abe was going to move in with them, but after a while was put into a nursing/assisted living home. THAT IS HOW HOMER AFFORDED HIS HOUSE
Yeah and no one in 1992 thought a one-income household was normal. Everyone knew that ended with the recession in the late '70's, followed by the Republicans' relentless campaign against the poor and middle class, which continues to this day.
