Public transport isn't America's strong suit. According to the Pew Research Center, only 11% of Americans relied on the bus, train, or subway to get around. In Europe, the numbers are very different. In 2024, four in five Europeans living in major cities use public transport daily.
But buses, trains, and subways come with their own etiquette. Unfortunately, some people are not aware of it or choose to ignore it willfully. Such folks think it's okay to leave their trash behind, put their feet in other people's faces, or take up extra seats when the vehicle is clearly crowded.

Not all of them. I don’t smoke, but my parents do and they always, and I mean ALWAYS do it outside, away from me. At home, they do it in the back garden. At my grandparents’ caravan they do it outside on the deck, and anywhere else (like a hotel) they do it outside, in a designated place. So no, not all smokers consider the entire world their ashtray. Maybe some do, but not all of them.

Yes it's annoying but I try to be understanding in this situation you don't know if one or both of them have hearing issues, lipread or have other issues that mean normal phone calls are difficult. My sister has hearing problems and can hear better when she can see the other person, also my phone has terrible sound, it's just very quiet and hard to hear unless it's on loudspeaker. (I don't do phonecalls much but if I'm in a noisy public place and have to take a call I unfortunately have to use loudspeaker or I can't hear a thing)

As far as cities go, Hong Kong is often praised for having one of the most efficient public transportation systems in the world. And the locals know it: in a recent survey by Time Out, 98% of those living in Hong Kong rated the city's public transportation system positively.
The respondents listed 10 different lines, air-conditioned buses, minibuses, and even double-decker trams as the main reasons why. Other Asian cities didn't fall that much behind Hong Kong. Shanghai and Beijing were voted second and third place, respectively, by their locals.

Just saw this creep on the R train by Atlantic Terminal Brooklyn taking pictures of every woman that sat across from him. I love the purple! And my friend gets shallow scars like that from bug bites, she has horrible allergies. This may seem like a small problem--people behaving very badly on public transit, but, really, they should be held accountable for whatever awful thing they do. The kids who left this mess should be made to clean it up. If there's no accountabllity then people who are ok with doing these types of things will never ever stop. Rules and consequences aren't made for people who have a modicum of decency towards fellow humans. It's for people like this.

In Germany, some train compartments would have extra foldable seats that are there to put your bike in front of. The space is assigned for bikes which would otherwise take up space in the middle of the train and could fall over/onto passengers. So This might be a problem for people looking for a place to sit, but it is legal and also safer (if the bikes are restrained).

I wish I could find the picture I took on our train -- eight very large suitcases stacked against the pull-down seat, with the "This seating is for the elderly and handicapped" sign right above it. As someone who uses canes to get around, I was lucky someone else let me have their seat. A lot of times the seated play the "If I don't make eye contact with you, I don't have to get up" game.

I would shove it away from me. I already hate squeezing into seats on public transport. I'm tall (6ft,2") with long legs, squeezing into a small space is already uncomfortable and claustrophobic, so having someone rest their stuff on me would make that worse and I'd have to do something or have a massive panic attack.

There's ways of doing things, for the love of God. Get on the train with a bag of pain au chocolat, hand them out to those sitting nearest to you, and apologise profusely then explain that you need to make a conference call and how much you'd appreciate it if people kept their voices down, although you understand you're being a bit cheeky. I never understand why people chose trying to exert 'their right' or whatever they think instead of using a method that's effective.

So why is this okay? If you want to let your baby make a mess in your home, that's one thing, but this is a shared public space we all pay to experience and that should be considered.
Americans, on the other hand, are known as heavily car-dependent people. However, most still see the benefits that public transit has. In one survey, the respondents identified congestion relief and accessibility to vulnerable residents as benefits for their community. At the same time, few were willing to support increased spending on transit or raising any specific tax to increase funding.

Years ago, I was on a train in Chicago and two young fellows had their feet on the opposite seat. A conductor came to check tickets and told them to remove their feet, which they did until he disappeared. After a while, a very large and imposing Afro - American conductor came along and in a booming voice said " take your feet off the seats ". OMG, I've never seen anyone comply with such alacrity ! And they never put them back for the rest of the trip. Good man and it gave me great satisfaction !

Not sure it's real. Used to be an old fun prank where you could use your palm , and heel of your palm to make the arch of a foot, and then fingers to make the "toes". It was a fun thing to do with fogged up windows to mess with people.

Exactly. I can understand both sides. Someone wants to take full advantage of the perks of the seat they paid for. The people behind want to be able to enjoy their seat, too. It's a design flaw.

As long as he's not spilling it, I don't see the big deal. I've seen someone drop a 2L of Pepsi on the bus, with the cap breaking off and Pepsi spraying on a bunch of people.
