50 Pics Showing Some HOAs Getting Out Of Control (New Pics)
Interview With ExpertThe homeowners associations (HOAs) were initially established to help run and manage neighborhoods. However, with time they became more and more thirsty for power, imposing the most unbelievably petty rules. As you can imagine, this started causing quite an inconvenience for residents, so they began exposing them online, sharing the most absurd examples of HOAs in action.
We at Bored Panda have once again gathered a whole list of them just to show how annoying they can get. Scroll down to find them, and don’t forget to share your own (horror) stories below.
While you're at it, make sure to check out a conversation with Jeremy Smith, real estate advisor at Engel & Völkers Atlanta, who kindly agreed to tell us more about HOAs.

Hoa’s Board Members Say They Are Only Protecting Property Values. But Actually They Are Control Freaks With Too Much Time On Their Hands
I'll bet the person who runs this HOA has a Confederate flag hung up somewhere. Or possibly tattooed on their body.
Nicely done. A rainbow flag is easy to miss especially if it's a smaller one, but this house is now completely impossible to miss.
take them to court...several cases like this about pride flags and political signs...first amendment right....but keep the light...prettier than the flag anyway
It wouldn't be a first amendment case at all. HOAs are private.

If you mean a condo where you own your apartment, those also have HOAs to take care of building maintenance $upkeep.

It's like back in the 50s when they weren't allowed to show a toilet on TV. That's a real thing BTW. Leave it to Beaver was the first to show part of a toilet, just the tank, and ALL in the Family was teh first to have an actual flush in 1971.
And people say the newer generation is full of snowflakes. They couldn't handle toilets.
Load More Replies...I like it and it's deserved, however I've worked for a builder and am familiar with how hoa's operate. They're going to hit them with the fence being non-compliant to standardization guidelines.
Depends, HOAs sometimes free the strangest blind spots on their rules.

Then you put it by the curb on collection day. This is for the days when it just sits by the house.

My HOA hired a new management firm and spent the next year enforcing weeds and such. Thr next year we hired a different management company
It's the point of it all. Unreasonable rules = malicious compliance.
HOAs usually are non-profit, self-governing organizations that implement rules for homeowners and renters living in close-knit communities. Their main role is to protect property value by ensuring that no unsightly views decrease the curb appeal of a neighborhood.
For instance, they can restrict paint colors, lawn maintenance, and even the cars parked in driveways to maintain an overall visually pleasing appearance.
"In general, I believe homeowner associations (HOAs) benefit neighborhoods by preserving their integrity and maintaining a clean, cohesive aesthetic," Jeremy Smith, real estate advisor at Engel & Völkers Atlanta, told Bored Panda.
"Without community guidelines, neighborhoods and condominiums can start to look inconsistent, as individual design choices may not align with broader appeal. HOAs help protect property values by ensuring uniformity and upkeep—when everything is mismatched, values tend to decline."
Crazy Hoa Rules
Probably because people were growing more illicit plants using the tomatoes for cover alongside them. Or that might just have been my old neighbour….
Corn is the better medium for hiding that. I had neighbors who did that all the way back when it was a felony for doing so.
Load More Replies...That's a good one. Unfortunately many are more sinistar. Some HOAs are straight up Red Lining.
My daughter and SIL live in the first section built of their HOA neighborhood. They are not subject to HOA rules.
This one could have something to do with the wildlife. Some plants attract unsafe animals. One place I lived was close to the mountains, and attracting deer meant attracting mountain lions.
My tomato plants attract bunnies and deer (and a possibly near-sighted raccoon) who nibble on every tomato to figure out they don't like any of them.
Load More Replies...an excessive rule. the usual one you see is "no vegetable gardens in the front yard". they're okay ok the back yard.
The Kids In My Complex Have Gone To War With The Karens
I live in a large complex with expansive green spaces surrounded by walkways. Our HOA isn’t as restrictive as most, which is generally a good thing. Many kids live here, and they love drawing on the walkways with chalk.
Most residents are fine with this, except for a number of Karens who take issue with the drawings. Someone even brought it up at a board meeting, and predictably, the HOA decided to try to ban chalk art.
This decision has turned our community Facebook group into a battleground. The naysayers claim the kids are ruining the aesthetic of the complex, while others are baffled by their negativity.
Amidst the adult arguments at board meetings and online, the kids have responded by creating even more chalk art. They've even adopted a caricature of a piece of chalk as their symbol, which is my favorite part.
My favorite part is the kids “somehow” figured out the area where the complainers live and have turned it into Louvre of chalk art. Not only that but one kid is signing his work! I’ve added some of my favorite pieces.
Where can I send more art supplies? I want to help these kids express their artistic side! 😁
Gotta love the triumph of freedom and happiness over oppression and misery! Go kids go! May your art finally wake these dreary souls from their self-inflicted stupor of shallowness!
Load More Replies...I remember when I was a kid and I'd chalked up the sidewalk in front of the neighbours house (public sidewalk, wasn't their property in any way) and our neighbour washed it away with water. Like, went outside as soon as I was in and just started throwing buckets of water over my little drawings. My mom was LIVID.
they should set up a fb event, "Free chalk when you draw on our street, winner gets *something*"
Load More Replies...HOA should realize that some things are beyond its control and chalk it up to experience.
Look. I'm going to be the first to admit that if I had the money for it, I would have a social media worthy house. It's my thing. I love organising and curating a look. But even I take my dog's needs (and safety) into consideration and if I had a family, I hope I would be a decent enough person to not to ruin everyone's lives by enforcing my aesthetic over every square inch of our *shared* house. Yes, it's nice to have a cohesive look in the neighbourhood (which is why I imagine HOAs exist). But to ban chalk art is plain ridiculous.
One of the reasons I bought my house was that the entire front walkway was clearly marked as "Lava - Keep Out!" and had many red wavy lines to prove it.
I don't get the issue with chalk drawings (unless they're porn, have bad words, etc.). Sometimes they improve one's day. My husband came home from work laughing at what some little girls had written: "Boys are icky and they smell bad." I don't know if any male egos were harmed in the making of that chalk statement, but he thought it was a hoot. 😆

Yup. This is my (USA!) future. Fúcking idiots. In every way.

When we band together for the greater good, we can overcome tyranny big and small.
I fear this is about to happen nationwide (USA) and we're going to find out QUICK who actually keeps everything running...
However, to some, letting other people decide what they can and can’t do with their own property sounds absurd.
"Many people dislike HOAs because of the rules," said Smith. "However, these rules exist to maintain a certain standard, which is ultimately beneficial. Issues like parking violations and other infractions arise when people break the rules. Often, those who are most frustrated with HOAs are the ones who fail to adhere to the guidelines. If someone is opposed to an HOA’s structure, they should have researched the community thoroughly before moving in."
Fight The Power
Ask the HOA to specify and justify how the kid is being a nuisance.
These HOAs really are the domain of some miserable fúckers.
I imagine they think children make too much noise, or think the scooter itself makes too much noise (clattering or something?)

After hearing about my Halloween display, the vice president and his lovely wife stopped by my home to take pictures, in order to go to the police station and file a complaint against me and my decorations.
I did a records request and got a copy of the body cam video from the officer that was taking the complaint, and he and his wife called my husband and I “sick, and possibly dangerous” LOL!!! He was very self-assured in the video, and I’m certain he thought that the officer would tell me to take my decorations down. Needless to say, I broke the laws, and the decorations remained until the day after Halloween.
I am currently working on my Christmas theme, which will be the Grinch that stole Christmas. Trying to find ways to incorporate the HOA, and the grinch when he stole all the Christmas presents.
A traditional thing i've seen for christmas decor is simply "joy" you could have the grinchy hoa steeling presents with wrapping paper saying joy on them. Because the rip the joy and fun out of anything they can...
You're an evil genius! I could never live with an HOA. We mow my 3.5 acres when we can, the trash and recycle bins might be at the end of my driveway to 2 or 3 days. I would have to tell any HOA to either kiss my a*s or do it themselves! They should all be illegal and disbanded, they are nothing but a bunch of power hungry greedy jerks.
get pictures of the HOA board and all the Karens and put their faces on the cutouts of the grinch charachters

I got a complaint from my old HOA about my house not having visible house numbers. They were kind enough to include a picture for evidence, which CLEARLY showed my brand-new house numbers right on the side of the house. When we moved out of state, no HOA was one of the top things on our "must have" list.
Maybe they actually thought you WERE a weed!? They could be dangerous!
Despite some people disliking the concept of HOAs, nowadays they’re becoming more and more hard to avoid.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 84% of newly built, single-family homes sold in 2022 were part of homeowners associations. “In most southern states and western states, it’s nearly impossible for a homebuyer to locate a single-family home that’s not part of some sort of HOA,” said Deborah Goonan, administrator of the blog Independent American Communities. “Certain local governments require almost all new construction to have an HOA.”
It’s Beautiful. Whoever Had An Issue With It Needs To Get A Life
So HOAs not only complain when your house looks a bit rough because it depreciates the surrounding properties, but if you make your house so good it also makes their house look bad, they complain. Is that how these work? They sound like elderly mean girls.
They are elderly mean girls. And guys. These are people who were the popular kids in highschool and never grew beyond it

Mildly Infuriating Letter From My Hoa
I've had this wreath on my door for 2 yrs in support of Ukraine. Today, the HOA decided the wreath is a problem because it's not Valentine season
Is the war in Ukraine still ongoing? Yes? Ok then, the wreath stands until Putin gives up and goes home.
The U.S. is going to stop any aid though because Trump is an absolute piece of shít idiot along with his supporters.

Load More Replies...I see it as a sad story about a colourblind HOA worker. I would write an answer, something like "thank you for your good observation, but I don't need any valentine decorations. I completely agree with the proper time for specific decor as I am happy to put the Ukrainian coloured heart down right after "the three days military operation" ends. You can ask the representatives of the Russian federation to stop the conflict and I will be more than happy if it ends soon. Thank you for noticing, I agree it is too long now. So thank you for your support."
How sad is it, when you own your own home and still can’t do what you want? Come on, this makes no sense.
There are people who actually enjoy this type of lifestyle. Probably the same reasons they voted for a dictator too. Can't think for themselves and need to be programmed like robots.

This Email I Got From My Hoa
For even more infuriating context our monthly HOA fee is $800+ WTF they doing with our money that they can’t hire someone.
The organizers are taking your and everyone else's to snowbird/sunbird when the weather's bad.
It’s like hiring a professional Domme to whip you. They’re highly skilled and VERY busy professionals, their services are in demand and not cheap! Pony up the dough, piggy, or you won’t get bullied!
Load More Replies...Hell, my mortgage on my non-HOA home that sits on 5 acres and a spring fed creek is only a hundo more per month. YIKES! (unless they meant per year, which is what some HOAs here charge. We are in a resort area too!) But 8 large per month? Oof!
Load More Replies...Most organizations like HOAs are subject to periodic audits and are required to publicize the outcome of those audits. I would demand an audit to show where the funds are going.
UK calling - i didn't realise you had to pay these people - But ok BUT $800 a month!! that is just absurd !! What are HOAs supposed to do and do they do anything actually worth while? series question as we don't have them over here and we seem to limp along in our quaint old ways.
Andi, Serious answer - When you purchase a house or condominium, IF there is an HOA it is part of what you legally agree to in the Purchase and Sale Agreement (PSA). HOA fees vary from nothing to (apparently) absurd. HOAs are not all powerful. In theory they serve the residents and the residents can vote out the current HOA president / board if they desire. For my friend's house, there are some reasonable rules about absurd house colors and such, but the use of the fees mainly goes towards maintaining street lights and cleaning the storm water drains. Years ago it was about $150 per YEAR, I think closer to $200 now. Some fancier places have a gated community, full time security guard at gate, workers maintaining the grounds - painting, grounds keeping etc. Those charge more to hire people to do those things. If the $800 / month figure above is accurate, it suggests a pretty fancy community.
Load More Replies...Being a part of an HOA, of course, isn’t free. On average, residents pay from $100 to $300, sometimes with fees reaching the thousands mark. The homes themselves are at least 4% or about $13,500 more expensive than non-HOA homes. HOAs justify such sums, saying that they’re preserving property values by maintaining their aesthetic appeal—a claim many are enticed by, as for a lot of people, homes are one of the biggest investments in their lives.
This Guy Got A Letter From The Hoa Because They Were Jealous Of His Generator While They Were Without Power

Load More Replies...So you are supposed to be quiet and close your curtains so as to not make other HOA members jealous and you aren’t even in the HOA?! Yeah, no. I missed the part where they're not even IN the damn HOA. Yeah go BIGGER next time.
Load More Replies...Best part is the greeting... dear NON-hoa homeowner. Kick rocks douche-canoe! I'd be scouring military surplus to get a big ole diesel that COULD run the neighborhood and just test run it whenever there's an outage...
Dear Hoa committee, I would suggest that that a portion of the exorbitant fees that are paid monthly be diverted to a program to supply all residents with generators to alleviate the disparity of generator equity. Otherwise as I am not a member and you have no purview, you can go pound sand
So because they were jealous of your generator providing power, they complained?
Hoa Cut Down Our Tree
We moved into a brand new neighborhood in January and all summer we were asking our HOA for our pool key and in response they had our tree cut down because it “looked dead”. The person sent to cut it confirmed that it did not look dead but did their job anyway.
Looks like an oak, hope they needed to replace it with same size and OP didn't have to pay anything!
Load More Replies...You might check for any tree replacement laws. May give you a leg up, to sue. Some areas have laws that state if a tree was cut down a replacement must be planted.

Load More Replies...Despite helping communities with their rules, 57% of homeowners who belong to an HOA say that they dislike the arrangement. In fact, more than 3 in 10 feel this organization has too much power. “They act as hyperlocal governments and, in many ways, supersede all the other laws that exist,” said Steve Horvath, co-founder of HOA United.
R.i.p
It seems that HOAs don't want children to have any fun whatsoever, yet I bet those in charge also complain that children are addicted to their screens.
another case of different rules for front of the house vs. back yard. This isn't 1933, and it's not Maycomb Alabama (look it up)

The email I just received from HOA. The people in the SUV were regular people who were my friends. This is just weird. Am I supposed to tell those people to rent a Prius the next time around?
FYI this was a very tame party. No loud music. About 6 vehicles in the driveway and 2 on the street and everyone parked in a decent manner.
"Dear sir, Unfortunately I have no control over the type and style of vehicles employed by Government officers -specifically, the State HOA Bureau- in their line of duty. As a law abiding citizen, I'd dutifully comply with their requests for information and documentation about our HOA dealings and its legal challenges. Thanks for the understanding."
There was probably one nosey neighbor who cared, but wrote the letter to make it sound like multiple people were upset.
if they were black or hispanic, no doubt the neighbors thought they were gangster or a cartel...i would bet dollars to donuts that they were..had similar stuff happen near me
You should reply that it none of their business what car the dealers and hookers turn up in.
Hoa Violation For Parking On Grass
HOAs are the worst.
Why is a correction date before the inspection date, or does my British mind not get this?
I think it's saying they have to correct it by the 12th, and the HOA will come and inspect the correction on the 14th? But I have no idea why they listed them in that order.
Load More Replies...The rule was made because of bozos who do park extra cars on the grass. (my mother's neighbor did this and I asked if poor people lived next door. She pointed out that the car was a Mercedes)
I know there are horrible HOAs that will measure and critique everything you do. I'm sorry for you.
the karens doing this are like speed trap officers. they have quotas.
However, there still are some rules that HOAs can’t enforce. For instance, they can’t take away residents’ right to solar drying. 19 states prohibit these organizations from forbidding homeowners from using a clothesline to dry their clothes. Even though a member of the HOA might see fabrics in the breeze as unorderly, they can’t do anything about it, except if you share your backyard with someone else.
Hoa Flipping Out Over Black House
My HOA, in Texas, has recently FLIPPED OUT, because we painted our house black. The photo attached isn’t the actual house but it could be. Originally, all of the houses built, in the early 2000’s, were similar pastel colors. Light grey, yellow, blue, etc.. very boring. The CCRs state that to repaint your house you have to submit the color to the architectural control committee (ACC) and that the colors be “harmonious” with the neighborhood or some BS like that. Nothing specifically prohibits any specific color. We followed the rules to the letter, got written approval from the ACC but now the HOA president, Karen, is trying to make us repaint and force the members of the ACC to retract the approval or resign. I say they can kick rocks. What I don’t get is WHY DOES SHE CARE?? It doesn’t impact her in any way and the neighborhood, although outside of this particular HOA, already has tons of black houses. Do they seriously think that forcing every house to look the same will somehow boost property values? I think the opposite. (It’s also worth noting that every house in the HOA has tripled in value over the last 10 years so home value is not even an argument by any stretch).
We’re about to build and our proposed exterior is going to be a grey blue. HOA pres bristled when I said blue cause it “isn’t a color in nature”. I tried really hard not to point at the sky. Mind you, she likes our colors. But wants me to say grey, not blue.
I would love to live in a black house, it suits my gothic tendencies. Unfortunately I live in a listed, 500 year old building in a conservation area so it's not allowed.
I really want a dark painted house but my wife is worried about how hot the house will get in the Summer. Fair point, but she's essentially the HOA of our house LOL
Load More Replies...They actually can force the issue. If the OP signed the papers agreeing that they would abide by the bylaws of the HOA, then yeah... the HOA can tell every single person in that neighborhood who is a member of the HOA, what color they can paint their house. In Texas (where OP is) HOA's even have the power to forcibly foreclose on properties of home owners who continually refuse to abide by HOA regulations, or who are refusing to pay HOA levied fines.
You may be right, but OP could pursue an estoppel as well, potentially, since the work WAS previously approved by their ACC and was completed while still approved.
Load More Replies...You live in a totally black home in Texas? Do you like being hot? It's Texas! America's frying pan!
Question. Does having a black house in Texas affect your electricity bills? I imagine the AC would be in full overdrive.
I don't understand painting a house black, especially in Texas. But it's your house
I'm calling b******t on this one, especially the part about multiple other houses in the area being painted black. There may be one or two people stupid enough to paint their house black in the Texas climate, but I find it difficult to believe there are many.
You would have to be a dumbass or have a lot of money in order to paint your house black in Texas. I wonder what their electric bill looks like?

Load More Replies...I worked for a builder and we ran the hoa until the development became 55% percent occupied and then the residents would assume control. Almost always the first item on the agenda of the first meeting was to raise the fees
this sometimes happens when you purchase a home in a neighborhood under contruction. when all homes/roads are complete, the responsiblities of the builder become HOA responsiilities. Things like snow plowing, mowing of medians or designated green spaces, etc.
My husband and I bought a house in 2023. I really only had a handful of horror stories from my mom about the various HOAs she has lived in... we told our real estate agent "NO HOA!" I do not think I could tolerate the pettiness of an HOA. I'm sure some are good, but you know what - I've never heard of a good HOA!
Recently learned of an HOA that demanded keys to the residences. They wanted to be able to check the INTERIOR of the homes! Supposedly, so the HOA can verify the "maintenance" of the home!
A lot of people end up selling their homes because of the exorbitant high HOA fees. That they just burned their homes down and collect the insurance
Hoa Gave Us 1 Week Notice To Fix Our "Stressed" Tree Or Else We'd Be Evicted. We Sent Them This:
Yes, they can get you evicted. It's usually over unpaid dues and they will take you to court. You can lose your house. I'd get your homeowner documents out and read them carefully to see what they can & can't do. You might also want to talk to a real estate attorney, preferably one who deals with HOAs.

Some trees go dormant in winter months and look dead . They clearly didnt do their research . They cant evict you because of a tree I would be taking that letter to the housing authority
In the desert, many plants go dormant in the dry season, whatever time of year that is, and look dead.

In some US states they can not only evict, they can foreclose your house and steal it from you for failing to comply with their rules.

I’ve Been Kindly Reminded By The Hoa That We Are Allowed 6 Pots Of Live, Healthy Potted Plants On Our Front Patios. Don’t Tell The Cactus
Only in America would you own a house and have some cockamammy officials to still keep you in check or imposing ridiculous rules on what is allowed and wat isn’t.
had a similar experience in a college apartment. We got several planted trees to line our 7'x7' balcony. For context these were extremely utilitarian garden style condos (super cheap). They forced us to remove all but one tree, because it was a "distraction"... being the only good looking balcony in the neighborhood
Trees like that are not inexpensive. I hope (but doubt) they paid you for them.

Hoa Threatens Lawyers Over Bush
So I received an email saying I had an overgrown bush that I needed to take care of in front of my house. I originally wasn’t going to do anything to it because I didn’t feel it was overgrown but I ended up clipping roughly 4 branches from my bush. I received this email a few days after.. I can’t stand these losers.

I must have this all wrong - please correct me. Thank you in advance.

Aren't they breaking the law, sitting in the back of the truck on movable chairs with no seat belts?
Pretty good chance, depending on the sate and how the relevant law is written. I'd definitely ask the cops if they'd be kind enough to write the ticket(s). With luck adults in th eback would each get their own ticket.

i think this is true of almost every HOA. it's retirees, or stay at home moms who are bored. send this photo to the local police. it's a motor vehicle violation to have people riding in the bed of a pickup truck, no matter how slow it's going, and what kind of lawn/wheelchairs they use.
All I see is a car full of nosey busy-bodies with nothing better to do. "Hey neighbors - get a life!"
I would just walk around naked. That'll give something to talk about.
"HOAs typically do not have authority over the interior of a home," adds Smith. "Their primary role is to enforce exterior standards and address issues that may affect other property owners’ access or shared spaces."
Despite some HOA members trying to enforce petty rules, being a part of this organization still comes with a lot of perks, like beautiful shared spaces and amenities, safety, and a sense of community. Typically, HOAs can be fair and reasoned with. Only in rare cases do they become overbearing or uncooperative.

This is the tree we topped at the end of last year that our HOA is convinced will not survive nor thrive. We have to tear it out and replant with another tree of their liking.
yeah but it's clearly dying. look at the leaves. they're green. that means there's something wrong with it.—said no intelligent person ever.

It is not just HOA's that do not understand how trees work. Our county would not let us take down an oak tree in our front yard that had grown large enough that we were worried about it falling on our house during a storm. It was considered a "grand tree" (based on size) that was at least 100 years old. We planted it and while I admit I am old I am not that old. Instead we had to pay to have it topped every couple years ( a couple grand per visit). Our tree guy would do a bit more than the 10% allowed. Well Hurricane Ian decimated it. Several large limbs fell on the corner of the house breaking a couple trusses and putting holes in the siding that let water into the house. Insurance paid for a new roof (old one was less than four years old) and siding as well as new flooring inside the house. They would not cover the $6,000 it cost to remove the tree.

Load More Replies...Look to city/county tree replacement laws. May help. Might make the HOA have to replace your trees
Some state laws also hve tree replacement laws. Maryland’s Roadside Tree Law This law, passed in 1914, regulates and protects roadside trees by ensuring their proper care and protection. Before trimming or removing a roadside tree, you must obtain a Tree Care Permit from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Forest Service. Any work done on a roadside tree must be performed by a licensed tree care expert. If you perform care without a permit, you will receive a fine or a more severe penalty from the DNR. A permit is also required when underground construction (tunneling, trenching, or boring) impacts a roadsides tree’s roots. We've had new people in the neighborhood who decided to cut down large trees in their yard and end up with big fines because they didn't check the laws.

"Reviewing board meeting minutes can provide insight into the community’s atmosphere and governance. While HOAs are generally beneficial, there is always the potential for power to be misused, so it’s important to consider both perspectives," he concluded.
Hoa Left This Sticker On My Car
My car was parked a bit (3/4) on a total quiet dead-end street, I understood my mistake but what was the harm in leaving a NORMAL PAPER under my WINDSHIELD WIPER??? I spotted another car with the SAME sticker with a failed attempt to peel it off. Until I can figure out how to get this residue off, I’ll have to drive around looking like a total dumba*s.

Load More Replies...Hollywood, Florida. Early 1960's. My parents bought a house in a brand new subdivision. When they moved in there were 3 other houses on the block that had 24 lots. Our house was the only one that had a sidewalk at the time. My mom parked her car with maybe a foot of it extending over the sidewalk. A cop, guess he was bored, drove by and after seeing how she was parked wrote her a ticket for parking on the sidewalk. Not an hoa story but just as petty
If you really want to be petty you can see if they can be sued or charged with damage to your property. In GA criminal damage to property over $500 is a felony [although it may be higher now with inflation]; the cost of a window replacement is likely to be over $500. In their defense they may have not been aware of the glue being so effective.
Isn't putting stickers on vehicles (unless you're a city/county employee whose job it is to mark vehicles) vandalism of personal property? I'd take them to small claims court. I'd put a sticker on THEIR car but they'd probably shoot me.
Fined Over $800
I’ve been fined over $900 so far for solar string lights and a trellis. That were installed before the new rules were even forced on us.
Can HOAs ACTUALLY fine people? I'd fight that in court. What are they gonna do? Evict you? They don't own the house.
Yes, they can fine you and possibly take your house. You have to sign that contract when you purchase the house. Unfortunately most neighborhoods built in the last 30ish years in my US state are part of HOAs. Please don’t tell me not to live there because I don’t have too much choice (my state is #2 to Florida on the most homes in HOA communities).
Load More Replies...Thats the trap.. you have to sign hoa agreements as a clause of purchase of home. Some states are finding these contracts to be unenforceable and illegal but they can in some cases void your ownership and you forfeit the property
HOAs are like Puritans. Actually terrified that someone somewhere has the audacity to have fun!
That's insane! Neighbours fining neighbours. There will always be some whose power goes right to their heads. The only way around it is for peeps to avoid HOA areas, and eventually, the builders of new HOA housing estates will get the memo, and refuse to invest in these builds.
this is ridiculously offensive. but not $900 worth. both the owner and HOA are karens.

Many of them are unpaid positions so who else would be crazy enough to volunteer for a bunch of work that you get paid zero for... you guessed it, karen who takes personal joy in pointing out flaws and having the authority to force her will on others
My dad did volunteer for the HOA for a year or two when we moved into a new neighborhood. He thought it would be a good way to meet the neighbors, make sure the community ran smoothly, and genuinely had good intentions. But he is no Karen and the petty things he heard and saw during their meetings just overwhelmed him until he wanted nothing to do with any of them and quit.

if the HOA is responsible for landscape maintenance, then yes, they CAN prevent residents from installing additonal plants which would interfere with the lawn care service contract.
My Petty Level Is 1000
The HOA hasn’t taken Christmas lights down from the clubhouse.
My HOA would send me letters that my holiday lights were up too long. I told him to show me in the rules where it says holiday lighting has to be removed by a certain date. They couldn't. They repeatedly sent me letters to clean up garbage in my yard and said I was in violation for garbage When in fact, there was no garbage at all. I went round and round with a Matoma wasn't gonna pay a damn penny because I was not in violation, every time they change the officer that writes those stupid letters, they start all over again about the holiday lights and I have to tell them again that they are not against the HOA rules.
Headed To Home Depot Right Now To Buy A Bigger Santa
Two weeks BEFORE Thanksgiving? Too early for me. Our lights go up Thanksgiving weekend, isn't that more fitting? Christmas decorations are meaningful in December, having them up longer makes it less special. I am not sure what is gained. I have a tree in my courtyard with white lights most of the year, it isn't related to any holiday.
Take that negativity somewhere else. Please and thank you.

Is This Normal?
We were warned late last night (too late for anyone to see the emails until this morning) that the HOA were inspecting porches/underneath our back porches and common area. But instead they went on everyone’s front steps and doors as well. Again, fine do what you want because us unit owners know we have no say and the HOA treats us horribly. But an old man peaking in my elderly female neighbors condo doesn’t look right to me. In MA & not sure on all bylaws, but when they tell us at 10pm Monday night to move our cars or will be towed etc. due to inspections of our back porches by 8am Tuesday, they went everywhere. If I wasn’t home all day today, I believe they would have tried to come in and check out the place. I live with a “community” (sent an email to HOA asking for peace for all in the community, just peace but was told this is NOT A COMMUNITY!!! by the HOA.)

Two Days Before Christmas My Hoa Hits Us With The News We Will Owe $3400 In Special Assessment Fees On Jan 1
As the title says, my HOA had a special assessment voted on to fix a roof and repave already fine roads. I voted no, but whatever. Each townhouse owes $17,000. We received an email on Dec 2nd that it was voted as approved and would either be $3400 yearly for five years or $17000 all at once. They sent this out Dec 23rd to clarify that unlike all other special assessments that increase the monthly HOA fee, the $3400 is due on the 1st.
To make matters worse, we are required to have ACH transactions and will be debited on the first. We also have to pay the usual $530 HOA fee by the 5th. We have owners on social security. I’m not sure how many people are cash rich that soon after Christmas but Jesus.
Aren't HOAs supposed to build savings for things like repaving the road or reroofing the house? Isn't that exactly what the HOA fees should be used for?!
per state law (almost every state). there needs to be a minimum interval of 30 days between "billing date" and "due date". Any penalties (late fees, interest charges) need to be spelled out in a contract agreed to by both parties in advance of the offense.
This looks like a scam. Who did they hire to d the work? Who did they hire to spin the vote?
I can't believe that all of you in the community don't pay these ridiculous charges & tell the HOA to go *uck themselves. What will they do, evict all of you?
Soooo, if you wanted to finance a car for $17k, you have to apply and get approved for the loan, so how does it work if you don't have the money? There would be a for sale sign in my yard so fast!
There are companies who offer financing for special assessments to homeowners.

Hoa President Has Started Taping Notes To Our Trash
One of our neighbors set their trash out at 4PM instead of 6PM, so our HOA president typed up a note and taped it to their trash. I guess now we're going to have to start checking our trash for notes?
So what happens if you set it out early because you are leaving town and not see their little "love notes"?
I would put a similar note on their trash reading- "Dear HOA, you are the trash."
Given that we're in a city centre and do get rats on the street, a few of us have seen mice inside our Homes too? So long you're taking your bins out? Who gives a rats patootie? 🙂
I'd wait until 2am and then make so much noise putting out my rubbish. When the complaints rock in I'd explain that I was out and didn't get home until 2am. Not wanting to miss rubbish collection if I slept in I complied by putting my bins out after 6pm. This would continue on an ad hoc basis. Nothing like fighting petty with pettier.
for once I agree with the HOA on this one: 1.) before 6pm the trash is likely out in full sun, baking and getting super stinky 2.) more time for critters to rummage through it and spread it across the street, yards, etc. I don't have a HOA currently, but the same rules are enforced by our county
According to the note, trash can only go out after 6pm on the day before collection or before 8am on collection day. This makes no sense. I can understand them not wanting trash putting out too early, but why have a cut-off of 8am? Surely, as long as it's out in time for collection it doesn't matter even if they wait until the truck's on the street.
if the trash is collected around 8am, then putting it out later would result in it sitting outside all day

Load More Replies...The problem with this one is that they are "forgetting" to apply the quorum rule first. I'm sure the bylaws state that a quorum must be established on any vote. That means that a minimum percentage of voters must have vote. It's usually pretty high. I think in my HOA its 75%. So by needing a majority of 600 votes, I'm assuming that there are 1200 units. So 34% of people voted? There is no way that the quorum requirement was met.
That happens in my association, so there is another vote and the quorum goes down.

Who Else Got These 5-Minute Shower Timers From Their Hoa?
I guess I don’t really need to scrub my ankles or pretty much from the knees down. This 5 minute challenge is going to be cake
Some people shower every day. What if I saved up a whole years worth and took one shower all at once? One single shower that lasted a day and a half?
In Australia the goal is 3 minutes. Fresh clean water is not an infinite resource and water saving has been in place for decades. 5 minutes is plenty long enough to wash your body.
Plus if you live somewhere warm you can turn off the shower while you scrub your body. That's what I do in summer in the UK. These shower timers are a waste of plastic.
Load More Replies...At least this appears to be purely voluntary. A request is just a request. And thanks for the free egg timer!
My dad was in the navy so we grew up with navy showers. water on, get wet, water off, soap up, water on, rinse off, water off. I still do that and I'm mid-winter in New York! Water conservation is a must, be it willingly or unwillingly, but it really needs to start with other excessive water usage: (from Google) "It takes roughly 20 gallons of water to make a pint of beer, as much as 132 gallons of water to make a 2-liter bottle of soda, and about 500 gallons, including water used to grow, dye and process the cotton, to make a pair of Levi's stonewashed jeans." vs "A typical 5-minute shower uses around 10 to 25 gallons of water"
This is from a condo or townhouse association, so there are no individual lawns.

Hoa Citing Me For Driveway Extension, But Other Neighbors Have Done The Same!
where's the actual property line? is there a "set aside" regulation mandating no construction with 5 feet of the property line? Use qualified contractors who know the rules!
New Rule Restricting Dog Breeds
My primary thought is that the proposed rule change targets the wrong end of the leash.
My secondary question is whether it's legally sound judgment to proceed without being compelled by HOA/common area insurance company?
My tertiary reaction is, if such a breed prohibition is legally sound, how does this affect resale of my property (assuming buyers don't know how to gut the rule of all meaning by circumventing through emotional support animal certification)?
The attached rule proposal is for our property is in the City of Los Angeles. I believe it was motivated by an owner-to-owner lawsuit that also implicated the HOA as it occurred in a common area walkway. The pit bull that attacked a small child has a well-established history of dangerous proclivities and its owners are reckless.
My guess is that the HOA Board is trying to get ahead of what they anticipate our insurer may ask, but I won't know until the January meeting.
I resisted posting because of all the arguments I saw for/against pit bulls that won't focus on the efficacy and legal prudence of pursuing such a rule, but I am too curious as to experience and feedback from the esteemed folks on this sub. Thank you in advance.
You can understand the motivation behind this, since a young child was attacked. However, wouldn't it be more effective to make it compulsory for dogs to be on leads outside of the home and to have rear gardens enclosed so a dog can't escape.
I find that it's the little dogs that draw more blood than the larger dogs. All dogs should be on leashes, and under control, whatever the breed. Pit bulls I have known are big ol' lap dogs.
Once again, I point to the studies that show that smaller breeds are more likely to be aggressive. Pitties, dobes, rotties, I've only ever know ones that are sweeties. Don't get me wrong. My service dog is a pomeranian, and a friend has the kindest chihuahua on the face of the planet. But the point is, too many breeds are thought to be nasty just because of their size or appearance.

My SIL was intimidated by an Akita across my daughter's street. Owners fault, but after a mauling, it's a bit late.
According to the Americans with Disabilities Act, a Federal law, there is NO certification/documentation required for service dogs. And service dogs may be of ANY breed, regardless of other "dangerous" breed restrictions. And, very few of the breeds generally regarded by dangerous, really are.
Our Hoa Banned Bird Feeders
Anyone other foco folks live in an HOA that have done something like this?
My place also has birdfeeders banned because of rats and also avian flu. So not a totally wild rule, these one I understand. (I don't live in an HOA, btw. Townhouse with a condo group)
I can understand bird feeders. My neighbor in the trailer park I lived in once started feeding birds. Within a month, we had rats all over the place. One of them even gnawed a hole in the floor from the underside of a trailer. It was a nightmare getting them out, especially as the owner of the park didn't want to use traditional traps or poison as we had raccoons that would get the traps caught on their paws or eat the poisoned rats.
Per paragrah 2.13, HOAs are now forbidden because they attact Karens, which can lead to tyranical rules and moronic nit picking.
If I ever moved to a place that had a HOA you can be damn sure I’d be a nightmare for them 😈 but I’d also make sure my home wasn’t part of the area they’re in, just close enough to drive them batty 😂
Yeah this. I'd love to move into a house adjacent to an HOA.

How and why do they exist?? Non American here!!

For people who live in "The Land Of The Free" it appears to me you don't have much freedom. But now hear this: The US constitution gives you the freedom of association. Just buy the property you like, and tell the HOA that you invoke your constitutional right NOT to associate.
I would love to do a study on the difference in blood pressure of those who live in an HOA neighbourhood and those who don't. Receiving any of these notices would have my blood pressure through the roof.
Almost all new housing, except for the very wealthy or very rural, is HOA. Virtually all condos (estates) are. Hard to avoid.
