I took pictures to document the previous interior paint in my 95 year old log cabin before covering them, intense shades of pink and green that do violence to the eye. I can't imagine all of the walls in either color.

It doesn’t say she inherited the house. Just that before the house was destroyed, OP’s wife took an area of layered wallpaper to remember it by.

We bought a house built in 1951. When sanding smooth a bump in the hard plaster wall, I saw six layers of paint. The paint was extremely hard to sand smooth. The paint store guy told me that old enamel was the toughest paint.

The reason things like this would get covered, for those curious, is a couple reasons. The main one being tile is relatively hard to maintain, as any spills could get in between the tiles and both stain the grout, or cause mildew. They are also colder to the touch than more modern floor coverings. So, when an option came up that looked decent, and was easier to maintain, and didn't have the same coldness issues... it was common to cover over the tile. Same thing happens with hardwood flooring to, where carpet is laid over it.

The lifespan of seeds varies greatly depending on the type and storage conditions. I've read that they have an average shelf life of at least 3 years. But I remember my mom planted 10 yr old tomato seeds and they grew to be delicious. Just depends on different factors.

Amazing! Get in touch with your local museum! In Scotland, a pavement slab in front of the (back then new) Parliament was found to include a beautiful fish fossil. It got replaced. You can find fossil fish scales all over the city in the slabs.

"Someone in my familv told me about a possible time capsule in our old family house, after investigation I found a box dating from around 1 900 and belonging to a little girl judging by the objects and the technic of the glass plate negatives photos found inside. I have my grandma's recipes, but grandma was a school cook, so it's "coleslaw for 500," "Sheet cake for 750"... You can't simply divide by the number of portions because different ingredients scale down at different rates, especially the salt. What I have done successfully is start with grandma's ingredients and approximate proportions and work out something similar enough that my sense of nostalgia is satisfied.

If it was actually cast in bronze, it might be valuable. I think it's a gilded wooden carving panel that is very common. I learnt this because of the panels that my grandparents bought, in China, during the Cultural Revolution, were only worth about 100 EUR. They depicted scenes from the revolution, with people running around with the little red book. Idk, maybe the older ones are worth more. IMG_202510...18ea75.jpg IMG_20251030_181224-69039f418ea75.jpg

My old house came with a sealed manhole cover in the middle of the basement floor, which the previous people said they'd never opened. It took a couple of years until curiosity got the better of me so on a stormy Halloween Eve, I breached the seal at midnight because I'm stupid that way. It's a spring fed freshwater cistern directly under the middle of the kitchen, where I found evidence of the hole through the floor for a pump. Tree roots eventually penetrated it and ruined its potability. I put a sump pump in it and use the water to keep the duck pool topped off.

On another note, it's about 6,000 gallons of 52 degree water and I pipe it to a heat exchanger I installed on the second floor in the summertime. Free cooling for the cost of running a small pump and a small fan.

It probably doesn’t come as a surprise that some of the most common discoveries people make in old houses are actually everyday objects belonging to people who once lived in them. From vintage photos to handwritten postcards, these items aren’t just evidence of the past, but are also a connection to the people who once walked the hallways of the house.

I think that's an unfinished basement with an interesting door. The frame around the bookcase provides a pretty good clue, though. My old house came with a couple of hidden compartments and I've added a few of my own, mostly to add a little mystery for someone in the future.

While many items found in old houses carry sentimental value, only a select few are historically valuable and end up in museums or galleries. In these cases, experts are tasked with tracing and uncovering the important details about the item that make it special. So, next time you find a vintage photo in a storage box or a strange-looking coin on the attic floor, don’t toss it in the trash without consulting professionals.

That’s really depressing. I’m not keen on cemeteries in general (wasted real estate) but once upon a time, people put their loved ones here only to have a building built over them, not relocating them at all. But it’s kind of cool too because they have been left undisturbed.

No, no... someone definitely touched it. I guarantee it was not originally covered in brick, nor full of support columns. The graves may still be in place, but this is far from "untouched". And if I believed in ghosts, then I'd be sure this building were haunted.
