Some days it feels like the easiest way to go viral is to do something horribly. The internet loves poking fun at poorly designed stairs, terrible products, cake baking fails and certainly stupid things people have done. But every now and then, it might be nice to celebrate something that was actually done well. It may come as a surprise, but for every designer out there that you makes you question how they got their job in the first place, there is another one quietly creating masterpieces.

We found a subreddit dedicated to sharing “high quality images of interesting designs, including architectural, graphic, industrial, furniture & product design” and combed through their community to find some of our favorite pics. Enjoy this list of excellent designs that you might even deem “the opposite of crappy design”, and be sure to upvote the images that you find most satisfying and impressive. Then when you’ve finished this list, check out Bored Panda’s last publication on the same community right here.

it would be great if, when you rang the bell, or knocked, a voice would reply, "Who? Who?".

There must be plenty of amazing designers out there, but for some reason, the worst ones tend to find their work circulating around the internet. So where are all of the skilled designers hiding? Sergey Krasotin, design director and co-founder of Humble Team, wrote a piece for Medium titled “Why is it so hard to hire a good designer — and how to get a great one” detailing how surprisingly difficult it can be to find designers that will blow your mind.

First, Sergey sets a baseline of what makes a “good designer”. He notes that having a good set of "hard skills" is a must for designers. “Great designers are able to apply the best methods and practices to any project, without having to reiterate over and over. That means using design sprints and customer journey maps when they’re needed, knowing how to do design research and building a prototype,” he writes.

At a recent mass shooting at a 4th of July parade, a little 2 year old boy was found wandering alone in the aftermath of people running every which way. A couple saw him there, alone and scared, scooped him up and took him to police officers. He was alone because both of his parents were shot and killed. I am literally sick over all of this. The state of our country is...sad and frightening. I don't even know what to say to this photo and post. It breaks my heart.

How devastating and heartbreaking. Politicians should focus on protecting the living children, not unborn foetuses. Just proves that anit abortionists aren't pro life, its all about controlling women. Children should feel safe at school, I wouldn't go to school if I lived in the US.

I want to believe that US is still a safe place, but if the government are not strict about the gun rules, nobody is safe. How many lives needs to be taken away because of violence? How many times we need to hear this?

John, these things do not exclude one another. Accessibility is what this is about. Crazy is everywhere, but if I give crazy tools to act on it, they will. Guns are just too powerful to be held in the hands of everyone. A few days ago, in the hands of a well trained very experienced Dutch police officer, dedicated to de-escalation, a young farmer boy still received a bullet in his vehicle. The 16 year old kid wanted to pass a police blockade, and while moving away from it, the officer shot at him. He luckily missed. The officer and as pumped with adrenaline about his job at that time. We have major protests by farmers at the moment because of hefty policy changes. We also allow minors to get their driver's license for farming vehicles in the main road. We let cops have guns. The officer made an error because he was highly emotional, anxiety is that. This could have gone wrong. Your basic rights do not include the right to own a potential.mass murdering tool. You already have a brain...

Sergey goes on to say that excellent designers are proactive and responsible for product goals. They should not require hand-holding. The best designers constantly come up with new ideas and pitch suggestions to improve products. Some additional characteristics Sergey recommends looking for when hiring designers are people that are team players, solutions-focused, born creatives, self-organized and individuals with great communication skills. “So how hard could it be to find a proactive designer with hard skills? As it turns out, pretty difficult,” Sergey writes. “Not because there are none on the market right now, we’re honestly sure it’s quite the opposite. The reason is that the working environment really matters." He remains optimistic, though. "With great team management and a team structure, any new designer will thrive — whether they’re senior or junior.”

I think it is beautiful, but it is also staged. That is not how most people live with a desk. It's more art than function. While I like looking that, I would love to find a desk that was both beautiful and functional for how most people use a desk for work. I could sit at that desk and write a letter or leaf through one of those magazines. Not things I spend much time doing in real life. I can't see a good way to use that with a computer. That would obscure its beauty. That chair is attractive but not ergonomic. There is no storage. If I'm going to buy a desk for my home, I want it to be both attractive and functional for modern work. Even when you're looking at functional desks, they're often staged where nothing has an electrical cord. What I really want is great cable management, so my desk can look more like their vision.

Fair enough. It definitely doesn't look doable as a computer desk. But I think it would make a great desk for an artist like me! There's space to draw/paint and you could put supplies, paints, water, etc on the raised corners. Personally, I love this desk, minus the color.

Is it just me, or would anyone else find sitting facing a corner like that very unsettling? Could just be my well-established paranoia, but I would need a mirror somewhere on the wall in front of me, to be sure that no-one was creeping up on me from behind... And while it's undeniably a cute and innovative design, I'm not sure that it is very practical.

The first problem Sergey notes when designers don’t have a great set of hard skills is that no one ever pushed them to reach their full potential. He explains that designers cannot simply work alone and discover how to get better, they require guidance and mentorship. If they are pushed out of the metaphorical nest too soon, they might not learn how to fly. “Without someone there to point out their mistakes and make suggestions for how to improve, they’re never going to get better,” Sergey explains. “They can create a horrible design and get away with that. They can stay on the same level for years without getting any better and no one will notice. There is no authority, no critics, no movement.”

Also they are used to mean the same thing, there is a difference between a stutter and a stammer. Stammering is when you’re having difficulty halfway through the word, and stuttering is when you’re having difficulty at the start of the word. I’ve got a speech impediment myself and Im very proud of it. Very proud.

I’ve done a lot of speech therapy with my child, including with some of the best stuttering specialists in my country and I’m afraid I must disagree with your differentiation. My understand is that the difference between stuttering and stammering is that “stuttering” tends to be the word used in Australia and the US, where as stammering is the British term. Perhaps the differentiation you make is used in your particular region?

We need better gun safety. I don’t know why many people don’t want that because as long as you haven’t broken the law or aren’t mentally unstable, you would still be able to buy a gun according to the laws that governors and states want to enforce.

Another problem product designers may encounter is being “marooned on their own in a product team”. Working on a team can be vital to keeping ideas fresh and innovative. Sometimes, two heads (or more) are just better than one. Being able to bounce ideas off of peers can go a long way, and it prevents one person from having to shoulder the weight of an entire team.

One designer who has been working solo in a product team for years wrote, “For the past few months, I’ve been working on an app for a plastic surgery clinic in Los Angeles. One of the app’s features is a direct chat between a doctor and a patient that allows them to exchange all the necessary information and prescriptions. And you know what? I’m building it all from scratch, from the ground, while a similar chat for collecting patient’s test data already exists, made by a guy who’s sitting one floor below me. He’s even done a user’s testing and fixed all the main bugs. And still, here I am, doing the same things over again.”

Delivery guys don't care. They have a 'what are you gonna do about it?' outlook. I mean, what are you going to do - call UPS and say your box says it was tipped at some point? They're not going to care. They barely care when their drivers wreck your bushes by driving over them or when your package contents are damaged because they threw it or stomped on it.

The carrier probably charges a fee to use this, if I had to guess. Pay for a tip sensitive shipment, they need to prove they didn't tip it, which also covers them if something arrives damaged, but the indicators shows they didn't tip it.

When designers start to become burnt out, they tend to take a horizontal shift in their career. Feeling frustrated with too much work on a product team or being tempted to think they have reached the peak of their field, they give up on any vertical growth and decide to do something else. While it is understandable to want to mix things up, this puts them at a disadvantage. By starting at the bottom of another branch, designers make it even harder to ever attain a more senior position. Sergey stresses the importance of having a mentor, not only to keep an eye on a designer’s work but also to help them navigate their career trajectory. Skilled designers often move into product management or analytics positions before they have had the opportunity to reach their full potential as a designer. Then we end up mocking the new designer's work online in a list of design fails...

Like the design, however if they truly want wheelchair users to join the table "with utmost ease," they need to add a concrete or asphalt pad. Pushing a wheelchair on rutted grass is not fun or easy.

While I find this fantastic, I do feel it would be better to have the Wheelchair access somewhere in the middle. Having a family member who was wheelchair bound, who, when in public was mostly always an “outsider" (as in forced to take place on the outside of the crowd) It would ve so easy to design a picnic table where they could be in the centre for once.

    Giobemo
    Community Member
3 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Easy? They would have needed 2 more sets of supporting legs on each side of the table to support the second benches, then the wheelchair would have to squeeze in between those and the people sitting on them. On the end they can accommodate as much extra width (or girth) as needed. No, this seems much more practical. And if they want to feel special, they can sit at the head of the table too. This is also a great design for people who like to sit at the table in their own chairs with back support and maybe cushioning and maybe arms, instead of flat-assing it on the bench.

A wonderful idea. Nonetheless, for safety, it'd be good to outline the edges of the table with a different colour, so that little kids who are running around will not accidentally bump into them.

As a wheelchair user, I wish ALL tables, in public spaces indoors and outdoors, had this extension. It’s very uncomfortable to try to enjoy a rare restaurant meal while sitting sideways to the table because the table design doesn’t allow the leg extensions on my wheelchair to fit underneath.

When it comes to career opportunities for designers, graphic design is certainly a popular field. In the United States alone, there are currently about 175,000 graphic designers, and the industry continues to grow by about 1% annually. But as with any other industry, it is impossible to know exactly how it will be until you’ve entered the field. To help prepare aspiring graphic designers for their future careers, Brianna Flavin wrote a piece for Rasmussen University detailing all of the things she wished someone had told her before she became a graphic designer. The first thing Brianna notes is that boring work is just something graphic designers can expect. Another designer echoed this idea saying, “Being a professional graphic designer is just as much about working on tedious boring jobs as it is building cool brands that require lots of creativity. You aren’t always going to work on projects that are exciting and fun, but [less exciting work] is a huge part of the job that some find surprising at first.”

This is how cafeteria benches work in schools in my area. So when you use the room for assemblies you can turn around the second one and everyone has a comfortable seat.

Art Nouveau. THIS is what architects and construction planners need to refer to when designing and building - please, no more brutalism, concrete and glass boxes, cookie cutter designs and non colours! No more black, white, especially no Gray! Or beige. Forget sleek and inhuman - give us natural human spaces, shapes, colours!

Collaboration is apparently a very important aspect of graphic design as well. “It’s easy to feel possessive about your designs or your ideas; but when you are working as a graphic designer, collaborating with others is a huge part of the job,” Brianna writes. “There are always more variables to deal with when you add more people to the work you’re trying to do—but… teamwork can be a very gratifying part of the role.” Although not everyone is naturally a great team player, working together must be a full proof way to avoid ending up on any crappy design lists. With the input of several skilled designers, the end result of a project comes out as strong as possible.

Pro-life, you can give up your baby for adoption, no harrasment, no nothing. How can you say that's ok? Even from a non-Christain point of view, How can bacteria on Mars be considered life; but a beating heart isn't? How can crushing an eagle egg be illegal, but a embro can't; there both eggs, size dosn't matter, you all say that. You will never be breeding cattle, but you can't be a cow killer. If its just a clump of cells, then what are we? Even from a Hindu point of view, a embro, insect, fish, they all feel pain. Please stop this, we kids don't want another friend dead, just because you feel like it, I know your scared, I know its terrorizing, but don't do that to another child. Thats not her body, its half of her blood, not her, that means your child is you, does that mean its the man's aswell? Does he have the choice?

No matter how skilled a graphic designer is, they are never going to be perfect for every project. That might be another reason designs sometimes fall flat. “I went into this field thinking that a great designer can create for anyone,” says Shavanna Pinder, a graphic designer at Geek Powered Studios. “When in reality, client and designer pairing is much like any other close relationship; styles, temperaments, and values should complement each other.” Similar to how every client has unique preferences for who cuts their hair, who manicures their lawn and what doctor they feel most comfortable with, clients must find a graphic designer who they really mesh with as well. “It’s better for everyone—and a lot more enjoyable—when you and the client are on the same wavelength,” says Shavanna.

This is super easy and we have this in our guest bathroom. We have a boston terrier though, not a panda. We measured the space, and then had a vinyl mural made big enough so that the area where the dog "eyes" were located would accommodate the mirrors. Then we bought 2 round mirrors and some led lights strips on Amazon. Aside from all the measurements and making sure everything was properly anchored it was actually a fun project for the SO and I, and our Boston Terrier highly approves! 😊

Another difficult aspect of being a graphic designer is that sometimes clients just don’t understand everything that the job entails. “I was surprised by unrealistic expectations from clients,” says Natalie Downey. “Whether it’s a shockingly low budget or an unreasonable deadline, be prepared to have a solution.” She explains that sometimes it is necessary to set boundaries with clients when they are asking for too much or demanding they pay too little. It can be frustrating to feel like you have to negotiate, but as the professional who is being hired for a gig and who understands the industry, the graphic designer is ultimately responsible for communicating effectively and reaching an agreement with their clients.

Facebook changed their name to Meta. The meaning of the word itself means extremely self-aware or self reflective.

Think about how hooked people (especially teens) are on Facebook - by design. Now think about how consumed their lives will be with a virtual reality headset on, spending their lives inside an artificial world. Some will do it so much they think of the real world as strange and undesirable. It will be the downfall of civilization.

They would have used the floorboards to measure how to place the legs. Then they fixed it to the floor and sanded the bottom parts so that they blend in, then apply woodstain and varnish to finish it.

Yeah, the paper bags were the plus but...paper bag manufacturing requires long-fiber old-growth trees and....back to square one. Reusable used 100% of the time and passed down to later generations is the only answer :)

They are not better. Growing cotton requires a lot of water in scarce areas and also pesticide. Best are hard-woven, reusable, durable plastic bags. There is a great video about this on YouTube, either by SciShow or by TedEd (I don't remember, maybe both).

In this case it's not clever - I think. You should be able to see the extinguisher right away. Not kind of hidden in a picture.

I don't smoke, I never have, but if I did, I'd smoke an extra one and ENJOY it every time I came across a pathetic and patronising message like this. Yeah, I get it, smoking is bad. But first they did everything in their power to make people addicted, and now that so many people are, they get shamed and belittled for it by (mostly) snotty youngsters who think they they are the new flower children. Quit the shitty, condescending mind games and just remove the damn ashtray if you don't really want people to smoke there.

I smoke. I appreciate you. I respect non-smokers and the areas they occupy in public. But if there's an astray I have no reason to put it out because a non-smoker is standing next to it. A man I work with could sit under the awning to be outside but his girlfriend vapes and has to at the smoke shack. I did apologize for the wind carrying his way but he said no I'm here in your space you don't need to apologize for me putting myself here.

We know there's a coming food shortage, yet they want to convert 10's of thousands of acres of prime farmground into solar farms in Indiana and Ohio alone. Why, because government subsidies for solar - developers build the solar fields, get their money, then walk away when it doesn't produce "as advertised". SAVE OUR FARMGROUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How about we stop subsidizing corn as a food and gasoline additive and actually grow food? Solar panels may keep the climate stabilized enough that we continue to have ANY farmland at all..and water.

Why is everything talked about as the coming "X" catastrophe? Why not talk honestly about the ongoing people catastrophe, as in there are too many and Earth can't, in fact, just keep on supporting however many more billions we choose to spit out? Or possibly talk about how humans didn't evolve for a world in which it is becoming ever more difficult to actually disconnect, not just from technology but also other people, and that maybe...just maybe...this is at the core of our social problems?

my adhd is so dumbfounded seeing all the incredible art on the thread, like this one. i genuinely cannot comprehend being able to utilise so so many hours and working on such intricate, delicate, detailed creations. meanwhile i lay in bed, unable to sleep at 01:55am bc there's so many things on the floor which is triggering my OCD symptoms and causing me so much pain and anxiety, but my adhd physically won't let me tidy it all away. fighting against it is a legitimate pain and makes me actually throw up. i'm so jealous of ppl who can focus, motivate, dedicate, concentrate, have steady hands, don't get pain from trying to keep steady or sit still, can stay in one place for more than 5 minutes etc to make such beautiful things! but i love admiring them all the same♥️

I absolutely support this but let's not kid ourselves. The western world isn't protesting because of China's crimes. They're protesting because China is a political adversary. People gripe a lot about politicians lying but they lie just as much. If crimes against humanity was what really motivated these protests, we'd have seen thousands of unending protests by Americans when their military bombed hospitals or when they used depleted uranium on innocent Iraqis or when they provided weapons to their allies and let them carpet bomb UN shelters and strike red cross ambulances. Instead, we saw their shrugged shoulders and disrespectful defences of the crimes so let's have some moral consistency here. Let's protest not just the crimes of those antagonistic to our own regimes but our own states as well.

Some mosques are stunning, simple but beautiful architecture. Not dripping in gold that could end world hunger like the Vatican does. It's amazing to see the Vatican until you think about how many could be fed, clothes and medicated if they sold just one of those solid gold crosses.

Does it eat them?.. mine chases anything but I'm not sure what she'd do if she actually made contact.. (🤔 ..though, judging by all her eviscerated dog teddies I can hazard a post-watershed guess). ---- Oh man, I only just noticed the goose in the negative space. No, the dogs herd them away from areas where the geese aren't wanted. The golf course near my house has an Aussie as the official "goose scarer". He's adorable and loves his job.

Why? The design seems rather easy to clean actually, unless maybe the person doing the job is very, very short (for cleaning the very top, that is) The only thing I see that would cause a mild inconvenience cleaning is the sink, or rather, under it, but even still.

Back to the 90s i had a trip in London and i baught cigarettes named "Death". The packaging was black with a white skull, and at the back you could read something like " you know what are thoses cigarettes for ? To k#ll you, and you know it.." I will never forget the strenght of the message, so direct.. i think even more than what we have now with horrible pictures.

Edit : i could not not searcht it ! The message is even better than i remembered : there is a 10% on pre taxes that goes to non vivisection cancer research and related charities... don't ask me what they are... and here goes the text : "Smoking does not make you sexy, stylish or sophisticated, it kills you. We ar not selling a pack of lies, we are selling a pack of cigarettes. DEATH is a responsible way to market a legally available consumer product witch kill people when used exactly as intended. Death cigarettes. For an honest smoke." 90's were wild🤘💀 Sorry for my english mistakes. Hey BP, how can i upload a pic here ? (i'm new and didn't find the answer - even on the app)

Closed to the public because of a lack of safety rails after at least two people unalived themselves. Apparently safety rails higher than about waist height, or safety glass would "ruin the aesthetic" of the art.

Those rails seem to be at chest height and to have safety glass though. Enough to not fall down accidentally. But climbable, yes.

United States ADA code requires a 42" fall protection rail. If it was built lower than this then someone needs to have their architectural license revoked.

    Jaime
    Community Member
3 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Yes. Although it's actually from the Building Codes and Life Safety Codes. I haven't been there, but the railings in the picture appear to be 42". As Diolla mentioned above, that height is enough to prevent accidental falls, but you can't stop humans from doing stupid things. Perhaps the jungle gym aesthetic was just too tempting for someone.

I am cold just looking at this... Unless the whole room is heated, you'd catch a chill every time you leave the spray. It's beautiful, and I love the view and would love a bath tub there, but the waterfall shower doesn't appeal to me... Or the slick stone tiles... With nothing to grab onto if/when you slip

Low pay, no benefits, no employer wants to work anyone full time anymore (because benefits), no unions, rising costs, et cetera, ad nauseum. Gee, no wonder no one wants to work, and this is coming from a public sector employee with a city job. It affects even people like me. If I wasn't living with my father, and us splitting bills, I'd be living out of my car.

I'm not great at Danish, but I think it says "11 September 2001 became the starting shot for 20 years of American war on terror. Bill Kristol sponsored the Bush administration's far reaching plans to bring democracy to the Middle East following the attack on the World Trade Center. Today, he acknowledges that he and his neo-conservative brothers-in-arms were too optimistic."
