I've read an interesting color chart that also listed the flowers so you can see which flowers the bees have feasted on to produce honey of a certain shade. Really fascinating.

It's more than color. There is often a distinct difference in taste also (I worked as a beekeeper for a few years). Lighter colored honey generally has a better taste and is referred to as "table honey," and darker honey is usually put in barrels and sold to be used in mass produced foods (such as bread or breakfast cereal).

I had a chance (which, frankly, I didn't want to take but the beekeeper insisted) to taste honey from a hive that had been kept in a major city. It was a horrid dark grey color and one of the worst things I've ever eaten. You could actually taste the smog. Fortunately he had honey from other hives as well, and we bought one jar from local bees & one from a hive kept near an orange grove, which was absolutely divine.

I forget where I saw it but one beekeeper's bees kept producing off colored honey, like blue and gray. Turns out the bees were going to a candy or soda factory and were getting their sugar fix from spilled product or something? It's was a pretty incredible story.

It's beautiful, but it's not fully restored till they put a sharp on it.

Maine Coon and Siamese cats are very different in size, as evident from the pic in this list. But they also have quite different temperaments. Maine Coons are like the Golden Retrievers of the cat world. They're sociable "gentle giants" and have a thick double coat that is water-resistant.

The Siamese, on the other hand, have a very intelligent yet affectionate demeanor. They're very social and require constant attention, whereas Maine Coons can be laid-back and independent. Siamese cats also love to converse with their owners through meowing a lot and form really strong bonds with their owners.

Auckland Zoo: In a first for New Zealand, Auckland Zoo is celebrating the arrival of a baby Galapagos tortoise, and has become only the second zoo in Australasia to breed this species. The tiny tortoise, which weighed in at just 60 grams when it hatched out of a billiard ball- sized egg on 30 December, is the offspring of first-time parents; mum Chippie (47 years) and dad Smiley (46 years) – still youngsters themselves in Galapagos tortoise years. ~ https://www.aucklandzoo.co.nz/news/galapagos-tortoise-hatchling-a-rare-first

Siamese are definitely more emotional than Maine Coons and very talky if you give them any encouragement at all, but my friend's Maine C**n insists on waking her every AM at 4:00 and the cat persists until my friend sits down at the kitchen table to eat while she (the cat) eats!

Why do some strawberries tend to be white inside and not red? This conundrum has plagued TikTok users for a while now, but the explanation is quite simple. If a strawberry has white innards, it's usually because it isn't ripe yet. Because farmers often are rushed to provide produce as quickly as possible, the berries don't have time to get ripe.

Also, most berry brands do not deliver ripe strawberries to supermarkets because they don't have a long shelf life. While strawberries do ripen after they're picked, they don't get sweeter. That's why strawberries from a farmer's market are more likely to be not only red inside, but also not as sweet.

Me too. I'm a early childhood & primary school teacher and I especially love teaching art. At uni we were warned not to do 'bunny b*m art' with kids i.e. don't give a class all the same shapes of paper and cotton balls and make them create the exact same thing (like a bunny), especially not if they get in trouble if theirs looks different. Just shows no imagination and creativity, the kids get nothing from the experience at all. Instead give open-ended ideas, like the same stimulus that they can interpret however they want.

From the picture in this list, we can see that a polar bear paw is much bigger than our fingered hand. Interestingly, their paws are quite big for their bodies, too. On average, they're 12 inches (30 cm) in diameter, and their hind paws are bigger and aid them in swimming.

A polar bear's front paws are more round and partially webbed, and the hind paws are elongated. The small black bumps on their feet are called papillae; they create friction so that it's easier for the bears to move on ice.

Tortoise-shell cats tend to have tipped hair; that is, the color is on the ends of the hair. This is one reason they look multi-colored. When wet, the undercoat shows much more as the hair clumps.

Everyone wants strawberries for todays celebrations so they buy them while complaining about how expensive they are. An adult of any species of animal will always be bigger than its baby; that's not a privilege reserved solely for the Galapagos Tortoises. But there are animals that are tiny at birth but turn into quite the giants as they mature. Pandas are probably the best-known example: a panda mom is 900 times bigger than her cub. In comparison, a human baby is about 22 times smaller than its mother.

That's just different cultivars. You can find modern cultivars and heirloom cultivars that look like both of those tomatoes. Older cultivars aren't inherently superior to modern cultivars, it just depends on what you want and need in a tomato. And modern cultivars are generally far more disease resistant than heirlooms, so there's that.

But other animals have quite tiny babies as well. Rabbits, for example, give birth to babies that are 40 times smaller than they are. Newborn whales are 50 times smaller than their mothers. A Bengal tiger cub, surprisingly, is 120 times smaller than its parents. Yet kangaroos probably have everyone beat, as their little ones are 100,000 times smaller than their mothers. They have to fit into that pouch, after all!

Nowadays there are so many make up companies on the internet there must be colour matches for everyone but I guess unless you order a lot of different foundations and try them out (and wasting a ton of money) it would be hard to find a perfect match that feels good on your skin, provides good coverage, etc.

Nature is incredible. 5 weeks after this there was probably snow.

Before-and-after pics of excavation sites can be pretty fascinating. The one we have here on this list is in the city of Tekin, Germencik County in Turkey. The excavation works started in 2004, and archaeologists had to remove vast amounts of sand and clay to reveal the stadium underneath. Around 30k spectators could fit in it, and it would host horse races, boxing fights, and perhaps an occasional gladiator fight.

I don't think meds helped with my sister's notes :) though she did start them when she was 7 so I guess it's hard to compare. She was off her meds for about 8 months during 2021 when rules changed on who can prescribe them to adults and it was impossible to get a psychiatrist appointment. One big difference was how much she talked. She's always been the most talkative in the family (except for mum, who also has ADHD, we found out just after) but it really went into overdrive. She almost lost friends because of it, because she found it even harder to tell when others were sick of her talking or wanted to say something and her volume control was worse too.

So it destroyed your creativity and made you a drone. Congratulations, I suppose? And don't come at me; I was misdiagnosed with ADD as a teen in the 90s, and the medication I was forced to take absolutely wrecked me. So glad that I chose to study psychology to the point that I fought my doctor on the diagnosis and won.

I don't think it destroyed their creativity it just made it so that they could focus on something important (taking notes) and then they can be creative later. My brother has ADHD and his notes were like the top one and then he would fail the test because he couldn't study. Not every kid with ADD/ADHD is misdiagnosed and medication helps them so I don't think it should be demonized.

When compared like this, a dolphin's and a shark's brains look borderline comical. And shark brains are small – especially when we consider how giant their bodies are. Yet they also are incredibly intelligent: researchers say that sharks are able to recognize familiar sharks and even problem-solve. After all, they have survived five mass extinctions and occupy many diverse niches, Dr. Kara E. Yopak explains.

Hmm.. doesn't look right. The ring should be wider given that Saturn is the second giant next to Jupiter.

Comparing the clothes of a tall and a shorter person can look pretty comical. But what's the deal with humans being different heights, anyway? Our genes determine 80% of what our height will be. The rest is influenced by our environment and things like nutrition and upbringing.

I'd be interested in knowing how much actual sewing time it saw. It's recommended that you change the needle after every 8 hours of sewing.

The difference between a cat with its winter vs. summer coat can look truly majestic. But how do their bodies know just how much hair they will need for the winter? Contrary to popular belief, it's not about temperature. A cat's winter coat grows according to sunlight exposure: as days grow shorter in winter, the coat starts growing quicker. As days become longer in spring and summer, a cat starts to shed its winter coat. That's when most owners need to be on daily vacuum duty!

When it's iceberg vs ship, the ship always loses - unless the ship's built for ice-breaking or similar harsh treatment (even then, no ship wants to run into an actual iceberg). The thing about the Titanic is that it was built as an ocean liner - so intended to cope with any weather. Modern cruise ships are arguably less sea-worthy. What they do have, which the Titanic lacked, is enough lifeboats (etc) to hold everyone on board - and other innovations such as radar, modern communication equipment, satellite observation data, so on and so forth.

Ask yourself why the difference? Europe has many regulations on what is put into foods. Colorings, flavorings, synthetic stuff is more strictly controlled in Europe. In America, the product is made from what is cheap so the profits are greater. European product is often even cheaper than what is marketed in the USA. 😣😠

I wish they let me take copies of the scans of my eye before and after surgery. I do have one photo of it from when the hole on my retina was first found, but the imaging is now so much more detailed (so even that's an interesting comparison). The scans they do now show the whole surface of the retina (I can't remember the name of the scan, one of those three letter ones I think) that they can scroll across on the computer. They show what looks like 2-3 cm bulge (scaled up) of fluid which was encapsulated with laser surgery when I was 6-7. Then after surgery where they cut a hole to drain it then lasered it closed (in my 20s) it is down to about 5mm bulge.

I ordered a vintage size 18 M&S skirt from Ebay recently. I'm usually a (UK) 14-16 so was fairly confident it would fit. I could barely do it up and certainly couldn't wear it as it was so uncomfortable.

White fur is, in fact, not white, but transparent, and that's why the light can spread through it. The black fur is really black, so it absorbs the light.

Darker colors absorb more UV light than lighter ones, so the damaging rays passed through the yellow & "burned" the grass, while the blue acted as sunscreen. If you look on the right, you can see the red also protected the grass more, for the same reason.

You're missing the point, which is that the grass under the yellow portion of the slip-n-slide turned yellow at a faster rate & to a greater degree than the grass that was under the blue & red portions of the slide. Science in action right before your very eyes.

To be clear, that’s the size of the event horizon of the black hole. We still don’t really understand what the size of the singularity would actually be. It may have no size at all. Similar to dividing by zero, the math falls apart and we can’t model it. Still though, not a good place to take someone on a first date.

I have paddled kayaks close-ish to ships much smaller than this one. I really, really would advise against getting anything like that close to a ship even one thousandth of that size even if you are 100% sure it's totally powered down and not going anywhere. The water appears very still, so it's probably in an enclosed harbour somewhere. But it's dodgy, what even small waves can do to you.

The cards are stacked highest to lowest price. Your odds of winning are definitely better if choosing the higher price. I don't waste money on the cheap ones. Bought a $30 once and got a $1000. Most of the time, got my money back. That's why it's call gambling.

It's astonishing just how many compulsive gamblers genuinely believe that they break even. No, you do not. You remember the one big-ish win, you don't count up all the losses. That's why it's called a mug's game. Edit: did a little web-browsing to see if I could find the odds, but they vary hugely, it seems; was even more astonished to find out just how many hints and tips there are for people who believe they can beat the odds in one way or another. I'll get a few $1 or $2 ones occasionally but I hate that let down when I don't win anything and the few bucks I spent went to scratching a card. There was one game that I won small amounts of money. From $2-$40 at the most. I think in total of that one game brand I won $70 on a winning streak. But then I started only losing. Now that one game is not around. I keep it to every 6 months or a year or 2. I never buy any of those higher cost scratch cards. I saw ones selling for a $100. That's crazy.

Saturated and unsaturated fats behave differently in terms of solidification because of their molecular structure. Saturated fats, with linear fatty acid chains, tend to pack tightly together and are therefore generally solid at room temperature (like butter). Unsaturated fats, with fatty acid chains bent by double bonds, do not pack together so well and remain liquid at room temperature (like vegetable oils). I think the difference is in the composition of the fat, the one that remains liquid is healthier

The front of any modern car is designed to crumple so as to protect the squashy humans inside. It's good to see that even one of those swasticars appears safe to travel in. If the machine gets trashed and the people are unhurt, that's good. Insurance exists... 😁
