Bored Panda reached out to financial expert Sam Dogen, the author of 'Buy This, Not That: How to Spend Your Way to Wealth and Freedom' and the founder of 'Financial Samurai,' for a chat about the 9-5 work model, how to motivate employees, and how they, in turn, can learn to manage their managers.
"The 9-5 work model still has a place for necessity businesses in the services space. We're talking physical therapy, medicine, restaurants, flooring, and so forth. Customers need reliable businesses with reliable hours. However, for the technology and creator economy, the 9-5 work model is outdated. Having a regimented 9-5 schedule creates a lot of wasted time.
Let's be honest. Most people who go to work on a set schedule spend a good amount of hours surfing the net, chatting with colleagues, and taking lots of breaks. Instead, work hours should be more flexible to suit the modern-day needs of 'knowledge' workers today," Sam was candid about how things really are. Read on for our full interview with him about being professional, bold, and working with purpose in mind.

Rule #2: Watch what you say or do to EVERYBODY; Remember that the toes you choose to step on today may be connected to the butt you have to kiss tomorrow
And that person that pats you on your back may be looking for the best place to stab.
Had a promising job that didn't go very well the first few days. Lady from my dept asked me how it was going and I made the mistake of saying exactly what was going through my mind.(I don't have much of a filter.) Next day I'm sitting in the managers office explaining myself for what I had mistakingly told her. I made it a whole year before I managed to get her fired and quit shortly after. It was a toxic hell hole of shitty people with shitty attitudes and even shittier expectations of their workers.
Used to work with a woman who would set people up. She would say something about another employee such as "did you know her husband is 18 years younger than she is?". As I was one who did not know that I said (surprised) "oh, I did not know that". Then she spread rumours around the office that I didn't approve of their marriage due to the age difference and I never said any such thing. They were a cute couple. She did sh*t like that all the time, to everyone. Horrible, horrible little entity.
Financial expert and author Sam gave Bored Panda an example how flexible work hours help prioritize what's most important to him in his life, his family."As writer and a dad of two kids, I try to work from 6am-8:30am, then from 9pm-10pm so I can spend more time with my kids. Working from 9-5 would be completely inefficient for my lifestyle. The same goes for many other households today," he said.
The mission and the people are what should inspire employees and keep their spirits up. So long as the financial side is taken care of, of course.
"Besides steady raises and promotions, an employee can get motivated if they remember their company's mission. For example, if you are working at a company whose mission is to alleviate child poverty, then you should be pumped to work every day!" Sam said.
Being retired and being in charge of your own time is such a luxury.
That's incredibly accurate and i don't like it

Load More Replies..."But if your company's mission is to keep users addicted to getting likes on social media, then you've got to work on building good relationships with your colleagues and managers. At the end of the day, people join people, not firms. Therefore, the stronger your relationships with your colleagues, the more you will enjoy work. And if that means having a ping pong tournament every Wednesday, so be it!"
According to financial expert Sam, managing your manager is key. "A harmonious work experience is all about setting and meeting appropriate expectations. Of course, you should try and be proactive and do more of what's asked of you. However, after several months of going above and beyond, you must bring up your good work and your expectations of a raise and a promotion during your semi-annual review," he said that being asked to work overtime should eventually be rewarded appropriately.
Literally me today. I work at 6pm and I woke up at 1 and it's almost 5 and I've taken a shower and that's it, I haven't even eaten
Don't become an adult. I've grown old but refused to become an adult. I'm 67 and having the time of my life.
I would not recommend adulting. Who ever tells you it's good or awesome is LYING!!!

When you sit in front of a senior lead after getting a transfer to a new manager and say “I’ve been subjected to racist bullying and harassment so bad I nearly quit” and they just nod and say “ok”
Sadly, they usually don't ever figure it out. Lots of narcissists out there that always believe it's everyone but them.
I have known a number of managers/supervisors who will magically read the last line as "You should be extra rude and unprofessionally snarky, then throw them under the bus"
I’ve always said that if someone calls you an a**hole, maybe they’re just not nice. If a second person calls you an a**hole, maybe they’re just having a bad day. If a third person calls you an a**hole, you need to seriously consider that you might just well be the a**hole they say you are.
Toxic work environment! That was my last job. Got so bad they had us filling out a 10 page exit survey to figure out what was happening. I spelled it out for them. (Transferred to a new department for my last few years and suddenly hated it.)
"Come year-end, most bosses forget what you've done during the first half of the year, let alone the first quarter of the year. Therefore, it's up to you to remind them of your accomplishments so you can get paid what you deserve," he stressed the fact that it's up to the employees themselves to remind their bosses of all the value they've added to the company recently.
"As a manager for a decade in investment banking, I've observed those employees who demonstrate their competence and ask for a raise and a promotion are more often the ones who ascend the fastest. Be professional, but also be bold. The labor market is tight! Otherwise, you should just find another job with better benefits," he said.
"Ultimately, the best thing you can do is to keep saving and investing aggressively. Your goal should be to generate enough passive investment income to cover your basic living expenses so you can do more of what you want. Working at a job because you enjoy it and not because you need the money is the best! It fulfills purpose and everybody needs a strong purpose to stay engaged," Sam explained that we should all strive to have the financial freedom to do what we love and what matters the most in our lives."

I used be the "let's help each other" type at work, until I realized that my coworkers were more of the "every man for himself" type. So yeah.

Excellent decision. Pull yourself out of the environment to get your rightful lunch break.
Load More Replies...If you take ONE call while eating lunch at your desk, you're working. If you are an hourly employee, you should be paid for that time. Get up from your desk to eat.
Load More Replies...Used to work in a tech support call center. Loved having my lunch at my desk - comfy seat, plenty of space etc. Stick on the headphones and kick back with a sandwich and a cuppa. So often a manager would come over and ask me to get back on the phones as we were getting hammered. Used to have a small countdown timer on my desk (mainly to work on my call times) so would point to it and say that I have 35 or whatever minutes of unpaid lunch left and that I'm not working until then.
A past boss always insisted we take every day off...vacation, mental health, sick day. He understood why each is essential.
I'm in that lucky position now. And as a boss myself, I pass that on to my team. I've literally had to shove some of them out the door to make sure they take the time they need to recuperate or recharge their batteries. 😅

Wrong question. Yes, you need a job ! Correct question. Do I WANT a job !
I teach Transitional Kindergarten, which is the grade level for kids who don't quite hit five before the school beginning of the school year.. Teaching little ones is my thing, I do love it. It's fair to say, though, that while being around those little "cherubs" keeps me young, they can also wear me out! Especially now that the end of my career is not that far off (June 2025). For me, the question isn't "Do I really need a job?" It's more "Do I really need to teach for 3 more years?" LOL.
When your adding up all the bills in your head...can I afford to miss this day?
‘9-5 Life’ is a social chain media brand with over 429k fans on Instagram, as well as nearly 6 million followers on Facebook.
And they’re fabulous at showing the everyday absurdity, hilarity, and irony of working in the 21st century. With so many horrible managers, demotivated employees, and work-life cliches, it’s hard not to see the comical silver lining.
Surviving at work means so much more than just doing your daily tasks with a smile and a skip in your step. It requires you to know how to manage your managers, how to communicate expectations, and to know where to draw a line in the sand when boundaries end up being broken.
Workplace expert Lynn Taylor, the author of ‘Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant’ and the CEO of the fashion brand ‘Behind the Buckle,’ recently explained to Bored Panda that if you’re ever considering quitting, you should think about how you’d like to be remembered and how this might affect your future prospects. At the same time, bullying at work shouldn’t be tolerated at all.

We have all heard 'it’s a small world' and the '6 degrees of separation.' As satisfying as it feels to 'put a bad boss in their place' upon departure, leave those fantasies in your mind. You never want to burn your bridges or get a reputation for being a troublemaker. It will get around and hurt your career," the expert warned that every employee should carefully consider what strategies are the most useful for them and their future career.
"Your best bet is to thank your boss for the opportunity at the company and limit the number of negative comments you offer. It is unlikely to change behavior in a significant way. Be glad that you’ve decided to take the difficult step of moving on," Lynn told Bored Panda.
LOL Just got an email from work acknowledging our hard work while having shifts cut drastically over the past 4 months. I've been trying to find a better job,

This is literally my old job. They let all part time employees go via mass email and then complained about being short staffed
Had a manager do this but boss just said OK. LOL. 16, non chain single establishment fast food. They asked everyone for hours of availability for summer. I was fully available so I wrote that and full time. But because I did not specify exactly she gave me ZERO hours basically. ONE in thd 3 week schedule provided, in the middle. I asked and was told there were no hours despite providing others with 40. This was my last straw. I was a good employee. So I went in before the hour and quit without a 2 week.

"Very few people want to engage in lawsuits against a bully boss, for example, unless they feel they it will most certainly be a win. Called work saying I am going to the hospital (kidney stones are kinda painful) so I wouldn't be able to make my shift. Get a call back from my co-worker saying the boss insists I inform her personally. Sent a message stating "I am currently in the hospital and had called in for my shift." Got a message back stating "please inform me of any missed shifts in the following format... date and hours of the shift you are planning on missing, reason for your absence, amount of time prior to shift you notified the office and a list of the people you contacted to ask if they would cover your shift, and what shift of theirs you will be covering for them.
We're suppose to call an automated system that can take more than five minutes for a single day, so I called the office one morning, told them I'd had an emergency, called an ambulance and wouldn't be back until whenever because I didn't know what was going on. They told me to call the automated system. I told them the ambulance was there (true) and to tell my supervisor I'd let him know what was going on when I did. I ended up in the hospital (major migraine) and couldn't go to work until I was released by a neurologist. Fortunately my boss is a lot more understanding than the office was! Btw- I've had kidney stones: they ARE painful!
Load More Replies...I was one day out of the hospital and was having a bad reaction to the pain meds they gave, I couldn't stop throwing up, it was so bad, my doc ordered me back in right away. I called my boss and said I'd be off another day and he wanted to know why I couldn't just come in and mentioned that they had to cover while I was in the hospital. I went in through the ER and was only there for two days. During those 2 days, I also missed the big office Holiday party that started around 11:30 a.m. so only a half day of work as the entire office closed for the day. (We had a lot less work than usual because of it being close to the 25th). Trust me, I would have been delighted to have been well enough to go in. (This was a few years ago, pre-Covid.)
Had a botched appendectomy due to mine being in a odd location. Was told to take 2 weeks off. Boss started texting and emailing on day 2. I was a master tech and it took three other techs to accomplish what I did on my own from day to day. I ended up going back early with an assistant and a negotiated pay raise. I'm not cheap but I can be had.
Literally told my boss at my first ever job I wouldn't be able to make it in for my afternoon shift that day as I had been admitted to the hospital and he just says "oh. Okay." No concern whatsoever.
I had an employer in my hospital room trying to figure out how to get me internet so I can keep designing. I was being prepared for surgery for diverticulitis. ER doc's threw them out... I was just writhing in pain on the bed saying 'sure' to everything so hopefully they left faster. LOL.
Please remember, it's a job. You'll have lots of them over the years. That's not your family. Coworkers are interested but not going to help you in a crisis. That's a tough fact of life. Keep your personal life private. Everything you say can and will be used against in if the employer wants to. The person responsible for your paycheck is not your friend. You are not equals. Employers play on your compassion to get more from you than they pay for. Be true to yourself first.

I mean, honestly my companies great and it isn't their fault I have an abundance of people I care for and I'm the only one working right now, but seriously.... I don't make enough with everything I go through at home. Sure I still care because I can't lose my job, but the anxiety I feel every time I f**k something up is crippling and really not worth the rest of my day being spent scared I'm going to lose my job...
My attitude: I don't get paid enough to both work AND think too.
Me at school watching my grades fall apart as my classes and days blend together because I don’t have the mental capacity anymore to care
You should care about your grades, at least try a little. Your grades reflect your mind, and intelligence. They are their for a reason.

OMG, between my 2 jobs, I could put a huge dent in world hunger in just a month
Doesn't just have to be coworkers or boss... just every time you get annoyed at work. Imagine being a programer
...or every time someone interrupted you to ask a question they could easily look up themselves. Especially if I have to look it up to answer them 😬
One way to communicate work issues to your manager or boss might be to use so-called ‘positive bookeneds.’ "'I really enjoy my job, but there’s something that set me back a bit recently.' Enter: your beef. Wrap with: 'Thank you so much for taking the time to listen to me… I very much appreciate your efforts in trying to work better together,'" Lynn gave us an example of how this works.
there's always one person at work with enough energy for the whole staff, so I'm covered.👍. modern problems require modern solutions.

Load More Replies...Until I had my mental breakdown and was forced to stop working for my and everyone else's safety I never realized how tired I actually was. For a whole month I basically slept every day away. Until you break the cycle you'll never know how bad it has actually been.
Long ago when I was in the navy my friend and I were brought before our supervisor and told that he only needed one of us and the other can leave. He asked why should we be allowed to go early. My friend said he had admin work to do (usual excuse for this situation), I said I should go home early for psychiatric reasons as I actually wanted to stay. Our supervisor let me go early and kept my friend at work.
I was asked it I wanted to take a couple days off. I couldn't afford to.
Don't have to ask me twice. And sometimes not at all. I'll just volunteer.
When I used to work at a supermarket, I would sometimes clock in, realize there were too many people on shift, then ask to leave and clock out. I think my shortest shift was less time than is needed to count as actually having been to work (<8 minutes). That last sentence is possibly a grammatical nightmare.
When, in the history of the entire universe has a boss asked if you’d like to leave early?
I worked as a line cook as a second job, started first job at 4am and done at 12:30. Would go in at 2 just before happy hour ended. Usually the bar area was full and I was the 3rd cook in for the evening shift. Had a massive snow storm that day; instead of calling me I drove an hour in it and they said I didn't need to work today. There was 3 people at the bar. They ended up sending everyone home after happy hour ended. Best day ever.

My supervisor does this, but he comes in about an hour earlier than I do.

Workplace expert Lynn also gave some advice on what to do if your boss wants you to work overtime, constantly.
“For example, if your supervisor says you need to do A, B, and C by tomorrow, diplomatically explain that it will hurt all projects to get them done the next day because (then explain very briefly what’s involved or the potential negative outcomes). Then explain the positives of an alternative approach, such as, 'If I focus on 'project A' today, we will likely land the Smith account.'"

Why do you need a mask. I was born with this expression in pre-mask times

The blank stare of someone that's completely dead inside. I know it well.
And now for me I don’t need a mask at work so everyone can see my unhappy face.
I'll never understand why they ask for input in the first place. They've never taken any of it and used it productively.
One of my coworkers calls me a ray of darkness because this is my baseline attitude.
"My mom always told me that if I don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all...*silence*"
NGL, there are times I want to do the Jack Nicholson "You can't handle the TRUTH" at idiots.
This is why at work they do not ask me if I am ok, if I have any questions during meetings or want to give my input into decisions, nor do they let me be anywhere I might encounter a politician or someone of note with media crew in tow because I am known to not pull punches verbally :D
I enjoyed my work and got things done; no competition. If everyone wanted to slack and complain, that was on them, not me. If the boss wanted to make their problems my problems by finding fault, he couldn't. He didn't like the fact that I was above the workplace BS even though I was just a regular employee, but he also knew that no one could fill my shoes. He tried to make my life difficult to 'break me, but my knowledge of psychology out-psyched his games and he refused to believe I was that smart. I kept him in circles and he didn't know or believe it. He was quite the embarrassment. Reasoning with him was above his pay grade. Oh, he also had a fake, undated diploma that he thought fooled everyone, but even the dimmest new hires weren't impressed and I never had to tell them the truth. Our boss is an air-head!
"As I describe in my book, 'Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant,' this is similar to telling 'Johnny' he can’t go to the zoo, a play date and for pizza all in the same day, e.g., he will be sad, because he won’t have fun at any of them. 'Which one do you really want to have fun doing, Johnny?'
Ah, but when dealing with customers you can fantasise about their lives - maybe they're in the same pay bracket as you. Maybe they have an even crappier job. And you can feel better about yourself compared to their level of stupid. When it's your boss - who you know gets paid at least twice as much as you - and you're wondering who helps them tie their shoelaces in the morning, and how they actually managed to *find* the door to the office, you realise there are levels of stupid that are offset by money, and that's a bit depressing.
... Throughout the day I question how many people managed to make it this far in life without choking to death on their on spit.

You guys get pizza parties? Best we get is an email saying they appreciate our work
At my job time off is basically guaranteed if we request it enough time in advance. We also have up until 3 hours before our shift to call in sick.
I get the impression that this is a US thing (please correct me if I'm wrong). Everywhere I've ever worked, if the request is reasonable (eg: there aren't other people already on leave at that time- small buisiness so this was ok) and it is given an appropriate time in advance there's never been an issue. Where I've been off for an extended period (I took a 3 month vacation) I was asked to find someone to cover but I knew that ahead of time and was actually a reasonable request
My last job, it was made clear to us employees that it was our responsibility to find coverage for all shifts whenever you wanted to take off for vacation, a regular personal and especially if you are intending to call out whether it's because you are sick or have a family emergency. If you didn't have the shifts covered then you were denied the time off.

Me. Always start my shift with a meal. Have a nice long bathroom break a bit after. My mood throughout the day is much better than when I tried to make things easier on everyone else and harder on myself.
Tbh if you're in a "customer is always right" workplace always call your management the moment a customer gets unpleasant and walk away to do other work. That's their job to deal with not abuse for you to take.
if you always put it on your manager, you won't work there long.

That is so true. I worked at a (small) private school where the parents were pretty supportive, the kids were sometimes tough but not god-awful, but the principal was a p***k. Three of us quit the same year. We all agreed that we were so glad we got out when we did, we were all turning into people we didn't like much. I've been in a public district for 22 years now, same school site the whole time, it's been the best experience of my life. I count my blessings every day. Even if you think you've got nowhere else to go, get out. Staying isn't worth it.
I remember one time when I was working a retail job while at uni, the place is flat out, customers basically lining up to get in (we were already open) and the manager decides that he's going to do some office thing that's 1) really not important & 2) could be done at any time instead of helping the rest of the team deal with the rush. Laziest pr1ck I've ever had the misfortune to work with
Freaks & Geeks. It only lasted one season but it's awesome (and has an amazing cast).

My policy is, I tell the manager once. Whatever she decides, it’s on her.
Unless it's someone you don't like... It becomes extremely annoying.
No need for extra hours or to leave early. I just work my hours, no more, no less. And that gives me enough wages to live, and pay my s**t. But I am european, not USA... Sad.
I've never been paid for extra-hours in my whole 18yr career. They tell us, we can leave early, if "it isn't too busy another day". Never been not busy...
You do know that outside the USA that's called 'slavery', not 'extra hours', right?
Load More Replies...Not all union jobs are good. I had one for years and tried to switch positions they union kept helping the boss hold me back
Load More Replies...I'm so glad that I'm self-employed and have no employees. I don't have to deal with people like this.
I work in a division where I'm currently the only Admin Staff, and it feels good to not have to deal with others and only have to answer to a non-uptight boss.
