30 Nostalgic Pics And Memes About The 2000s Today’s Kids Will Probably Never Understand
Our childhood never ends. Yes, we get older but the core memories from that time, surrounding everything from the people we hung out with to the places we visited continue to live in our head rent-free, occasionally reminding us about themselves when we least expect them to.
However, not all of them are equally vivid, and some might need a bit more stimuli to come back. And the internet is excellent for this task. There are entire communities where people are actively reminding one another about the good old days. (We've already covered some, like the one dedicated to '80s & '90s memes.)
The Facebook group '2000s Y2K Childhood' is one of them. It currently unites 74,600 members, and whether you grew up during that era too or are just interested in learning more about it, their posts perfectly illustrate it. Here are some of the most popular ones.

I Loved Those Pens
I use one for work! So I make them buy me those fancy ones with the black colored barrel.
When I left my toxic job, one of my lovely co-workers gave me a going away present with three different of these pens. *cue tears*
We Had No Idea
I have not yet reached that point! I burn CDs from my iTunes list to listen to in the car. Sometimes I do it by theme - like a certain artist, or all acoustic versions of songs. My car is old and I don't drive enough to justify paying for satellite radio.
Same here. I make a new mix for my car about every three months.
Load More Replies...I can't be the only one who still burns CDs, surely! Right? Right...?? Edit: Read the comments, all is right with the world again *settles comfortably to compile another playlist for future CDs*
I have burned a CD during the pandemic. A few of them, actually. THAT was probably my actual last time though.
I bought a computer in 2000 with a CD-RW and downloaded songs off of Napster (60 minutes a song) and burned them on the CD. 10 songs - about 12 hours. I thought I was living in the future!
Aside from the few fearmongers threatening the end of the world, the dawn of the new millennium felt, at the time, like entering the future.
Humans marveled at how far technology had advanced in the 20th century. Just under half of all American homes had the internet and were able to Ask Jeeves for the location of the nearest RadioShack and create bad AOL screennames.
The mobile phone was becoming less of a brick, and you could even play 'Snake' on one.
Yes
Shut down included waiting for the "It is now safe to turn off your computer" line to pop up on the monitor.
And for some bizarre reason, some computers let you switch between lower and higher megahertz processing speeds, like a car where you can switch the overdrive on and off.
In the 80s we had two buttons.. One was the turbo boost. Other was power.
These Speakers
I remeber these always switched on with a satisfying whoomph! That and the urge to put your finger in the hole.... (get out of the gutter pandas!)
Good to know I wasn’t the only one who did that lmao
Load More Replies...In the 80s you could buy a soundcard to allow speakers to be added. Otyerwise no go. And later on a CD drive. It cost hundreds or $1000+. Back then. Creative labs owned the market.
I went straight from the cheapest, nastiest $10 computer speakers to a fancy Logitech 5.1 setup with a subwoofer that was about an 18" cube and a bunch of satellites. Used it for awhile til the neighbour started bitching about counterstrike at 2am. Went to quality headphones and never changed back. In hindsight I should have sold the old speakers back in the day.
I still have a pair and a CRT monitor from 1996. Antiques now, but so am I!
New Fresh Play Doh
There weren't any social media apps to scroll through immediately after opening your eyes in the morning (and just before closing them at night).
Even Friendster, the often-mocked social network, didn't exist until 2002, and Facebook wouldn’t appear until two years later.
So how was everyone spending their time?
Nobody Knows
waiting on a 4h download only to find out it's dubbed in Hindi with subtitles in Chinese
Or, you find out it’s a video of someone pleasuring themselves in front of a computer.
Load More Replies...When i was dating my husband in 2002, we speent nights downloading songs to play to each other. 3-4 min listening, 20 min download time. We talked sooo much between songs, that was really the time we get to know each other. Sometimes i feel pitty for the younger people, who are used to faster times.
I downloaded Natural Born Killers on dialup. First movie I downloaded. Took almost 3 months. If it got above 4 Kb/s it was a good day haha
Limewire was the computer equivalent of having unprotected sex with millions of people.
Wow
I had one and absolutely loved it. I would buy another in heartbeat if they were still compatible with modern apps.
Load More Replies...10 years ago was definitely the first one for me. I didn't get a smartphone until 2014, the last of my friends to do so! lol
Dude yea I loved that phoned and wanted it so badly. When I finally got it, I felt like the coolest person ever. Lol
I remember when Motorola flip phones were the bomb…now they’re in a friggin’ museum 😖
Fighting Over The TV
as a kid we were fighting for the remote, and when one has the remote the other one blocks the signal so they can't change channels
Load More Replies...My Roku's remote stopped working. I put a small mirror at 45 degrees pointed at the back of my TV and now it works perfectly.
Petition To Bring This Mcdonalds Back
Seriously though, what happened to McDonald's? I go in there every day to pick up people's Uber orders and it's practically a graveyard of the majestic palace of fun it was in the days of yore. Empty, touch screen kiosks for placing your order, and then a bag is dumped on the counter when it's ready. One manager in the front and a bunch of line cooks in the back. It is extremely sad.
Not to mention their new decor is as joyful as an accountant's waiting room.
Load More Replies...80s McDonalds was the best: unsafe playgrounds chock full of Grimace, Hamburgler and Mayor McCheese effigies.
Yes! I nearly got stuck in one of those playground equipment pieces once...
Load More Replies...We had a "rockin McDonald's". It had 5os music memorabilia everywhere and every month they brought a different 5os car in. And the store was purple. Had a life size sequined Elvis showing us the way to the condiments. It only lasted about 10 years. They had to change it back to boring
Chicago? Edit: probably not. I’m pretty sure our Rock n Roll McDonalds was around for at least 20, and I don’t remember any purple motif…
Load More Replies...They used to attract the kids with fun food and atmosphere and now it's all grown up and crappier food.
As Allen Kim and Breeanna Hare pointed out for CNN, they waited patiently for the news.
If you weren't reading the newspaper or sitting in front of the TV, you could go hours without knowing the latest crazy thing the president said.
In 2000, daily weekday circulation for newspapers in the US was estimated at nearly 56 million.
Mentally I’m Here
Took me a second to realize that this isn't literally a picture from my old school... wow some things are just universal, huh?
Yeah, parachute day was great, but... SCOOTER DAY!!
Load More Replies...We actually had a gym class we could take to learn how to ride unicycles. We were able to learn and ride them all over the indoor basketball court. So, yes, I can say I used to know how to ride a unicycle.
Grandparent's Secret Handshake
My grandfather made a game of it, 5 guilders in his closed fist and I had to get his fingers open, If I succeeded, the money was mine, Loved the game.
How many times did you break his fingers? Never mind…that was bad. I wish I had those types of memories of my grandparents but alas I was too young when they passed away ☹️
Load More Replies...I just saw this one only it was someone's grandmother handing out money like a drug dealer. Come on BP! Put some effort in it once in awhile.
That was my great aunt. I was grown and working but she still slip me money.
Dream 2000s Bedroom Starter Pack
I had one but it didn't last as long as the older one that I sadly gave away.
Load More Replies...I think the target audience for this meme was much younger than I was in the 2000s lol.
This was basically my bedroom as a kid (minus the chair and nsync poster)
With the exception of the NYSYNC poster and the computers, that could be my room in the 80s.
Those clamshell iBooks looked impressive but were not very good computers.
Pretty much describes Apple computers for a long time. They really lost their way for quite a few years.
Load More Replies...Replace the posters for posters of Avril Lavigne, Spice Girls, Bratz and Busted, then you're spot on!
The Most Iconic Four-Way Call To Ever Exist, Prove Me Wrong
The... only... ever four way call to exist? Can't imagine there's a lot of competition in this category at the Oscars
It isn't though, a lot of 2000's girls shows used to have multiple people calls like that
Load More Replies...The four-way call on Bratz: "Hey girls, Sleepover at Cloe's tonight?" Much cooler imo
In order to document your life, you had to carry around an extra device: an actual camera; the concept of the cameraphone was still a few years away from becoming mainstream.
And Netflix was just getting started: it could recommend movies, give you three DVDs at a time, and let you keep them for as long as you wanted. “The dream 20 years from now,” CEO Reed Hastings said in 2002, “is to have a global entertainment distribution company that provides a unique channel for film producers and studios.”
Damn Not Even The Fast Charger
I Remember Coming Home From School Every Evening To Watch The Best Lineup
I'll take Saturday morning Bugs Bunny / Roadrunner cartoons over these anytime.
I guess you didn't check this week, it's moving up to 6pm - https://cordcuttersnews.com/adult-swim-is-moving-to-6-pm-as-kids-stop-watching-cable-tv/
Load More Replies...Now as a 25 year old, I watch Teen Titans Go, Adventures of Gumball and We Bear Bears. Love, love it!
When I come home from work, I do the Ed Edd and Eddie whistle to my wife and she whistles it back.
I Had One Of These I Was Sad When The Marker Dried Out Though
Loved these. Had a going away party in 8th grade and all my friends signed one. So cute
I'm a lot older than this toy, but back in the 80's we had "autograph dogs". It was a weiner dog that was white and came with a pen so you could write on it. Sometimes it had a graduation cap too. :)
In the late 20th century, they had something called autograph hounds which basically was the same thing, but your friends signed them.
So much fun. Getting friends and family to draw on it & write notes.
I had one of these! I forgot about it! And I'm in high school (2000's kids for the win!(2000 to 2009))
Do They Think Kids Don’t Use Paper ?
What? Do they now sing 🎵We just got an email, we just got an email, we just got an email, I wonder who it's from?🎵. Because that will hurt me on a personal level
I'm not even going to look this up because it will hurt too much
Load More Replies...that's wrong. There's a handy dandy notebook still and it varies from letter and email. So yeah
I was just gonna say this! Just watched a bunch of episodes over here with my three year old.
Load More Replies...I remember watching tv at a hotel, seeing Joe, and being like, “Excuse me sir, whomst the heck are you and where is my friend Steve?”
Load More Replies...Actually, there seems to be an equal balance between email and mail mail, and the phone is on the back of the notebook--the notebook is still used for drawing the clues.
I've watched the latest Blue's Clues with Josh and they still have "snail mail" at mail time, although texts and emails are sprinkled in, and Josh still uses the Handy Dandy notebook.
But why do we feel nostalgic for these things? Krystine Batcho, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at LeMoyne College and a licensed psychologist, thinks that this emotional experience allows us to get a better understanding of our own selves.
"It helps to unite our sense of who we are, our self, our identity over time," Batcho said. "Because over time, we change constantly, we change in incredible ways. We're not anywhere near the same as we were when we were three years old, for example. Nostalgia, by motivating us to remember the past in our own life, helps to unite us to that authentic self and remind us of who we have been and then compare that to who we feel we are today."
This also gives us a sense of who we want to become in the future.
Out Rockin My Jeans From 2004 Today!
LOL, So do I, but they certainly don't fit anymore. BooHoo, some of those clothes were really cute.
Load More Replies...They're back! Y2K trend it's called apparently, I bought my 18yr old daughter a pair of these just weeks ago after my husband very meanly informed me I am too old to dress like I did in the 90's - this hasn't ended though, I'll get my puddle soakers whether he likes it or not
He just wanted to show off them abs and found the opportunity without just showing his abs. I'm not mad. And keep the jeans. They'll be back.
Never mind the jeans, the bathroom suite colour looks like its from tbe 70s.
Having Cell Phones In 2000s
Top right, black with silver circle: motorolla razr, best "dumb phone" ever. Satisfying clamshell to snap shut on callers who annoy you.
That’s another thing with today’s phones…you can’t slam them down when a caller pisses you off
Load More Replies...Back I days when no phone looked the same. Nowadays we all have grey bricks.
Remember when you had only 150 characters per text? And a text would be like 50cts?
Ooooh Yikes

As a resident of Texas, I grant you the title of honorary Texan
Load More Replies...Had a kid in my elementary school who told everyone he beat this girl in a game of Yu-Gi-Oh and stole her soul and kept it in a ziploc baggie
I was not an elementary school liar but boy was my sister! She once claimed that she rode her bike from Long Island, NY to Savannah, GA and back again before I had woken up. She was about 6 at the time and probably had just learned in Girl Scouts that its founder, Juliette Low, was from Savannah and she also had no concept of geography. She was INSISTENT. Okay, Jamie.
I said A.J. from backstreet boys was my brother, I'm an only child lol
My maiden name is Reynolds and my dad always told me Burt Reynolds was my 4th cousin. Liar Liar Pants on Fire!
My 5 y/o told me today that he used to drive his grandmother's convertible. Gma doesn't even have a convertible. Where does this stuff come from? And why?
"The other way that nostalgia serves an essential psychological function is that it is a highly social emotion. It connects us to other people," Batcho added. "It does that [in] so many beautiful ways. In the beginning, when we're very young, it's part of what bonds us to the most important people in our life, our parents, our siblings, our friends. As we go through life, it can broaden out and extend to a wider sphere of the people we interact with. It's a social connectedness phenomenon and nostalgia is in that sense a very healthy pro-social emotion."
And online communities such as '2000s Y2K Childhood' only back up these words.
Halloween In The Early 2000s
In my area, everyone has pretty much abandoned door-to-door trick or treating in favor of Trunk or Treats. I do not approve.
Load More Replies...I liked it when a stick broke through for that extra touch
Load More Replies...I wasn't allowed to trick or treat as a kid. Now I make sure my kids get to every Halloween 😁🎃.
Except for the leaf bags. Lazy bastards, like myself, just mow them with my lawnmower.
Yasss
So glad Britney seems to be doing well now after years of being unjustly persecuted by the media.
I'm Generation Y and I will never understand this. So tacky. So Britney.
Might be tacky, but damn it looks a look more comfortable than most of the bridesmaid outfits you see.
Load More Replies...In 2004 I was already lost to pop music so I was only aware britney existed, didn't listen to her stuff, much less follow her personal life.
The Man Who Had A Piercing On His Thing And Got Electrocuted
Sat on the water filter of a hot tub, formed a seal around his a**s and sucked his intestines out.
The guy who went down a slip and slide and there was a nail sticking through it and it gutted him like a fish 🤯🤢
Dang. I can't keep reading the comments lol. Never seen this show and I guess I'm glad about that. Dang. Fire ants?
Wow.. after reading these comments, I can really say I'm happy I've never watched this show...
The guy who thought he could perform liposuction on himself using a shop vac.
The girl who fell off the acupuncture table and impaled herself with all the tiny needles.
Followed closely by the dipshït who thought escargot was literally LIVE snails, put them in a salad, served them to himself and his girlfriend, and they both died of whatever bacterial disease one gets from eating a living snail.
Load More Replies...I Love Shrek Lol
"I've heard there was a secret chord that David played, and it pleased the Lord..." One of the saddest moments in CGI history
dude that song makes me think of you now
Load More Replies...My little brother had the SpongeBob one. He's now 21 year old now
Load More Replies...Who Remembers These Growing Up In The 2000’s
Unpopular opinion, I never liked these because they fit really weird and got stuck in my hair (Edit: I know they're bracelets. I have no idea how they ended up in my hair)
Were you supposed to put them in your hair?? I just thought they were s****y bracelets that shone in the dark and broke after a week
Load More Replies...I was working with kids during this trend and they gave me quite a few of those bracelets. They were cool to look at when you laid them flat, but they looked stupid once you put it on your wrist, due to the weird shapes.
I remember kids cutting off their circulation with these things. It's a good thing they didn't make necklaces like this.
One Fine Day A Woof And A Purr A Baby Was Born And It Caused A Little Stir
We have a catdog ornament for our Christmas tree! My kids have no idea what it is, but they think it's cute.
this show was both entertaining and a bit nightmarish. I had the creeps at the whole biological situation here.
I Use To Love This Game!
My cousins and I play this at our grandparents house!!
Yea To Take Her To The Mall To Get Some Food And Leave
I didn't until you said it but this is the most apt description of something I've ever heard and I'm SCREAMING 😂😂😂

Load More Replies...Good Ol’ Triangle Club. Where Everybody Knows Your Name
We Had A Nice Childhood
I did but never finished it because it always checked out at the library and it made me so mad
Load More Replies...With the exception of computers, there was no change from what we had in the 80’s. A lot of these are that way. Surprising as I would have thought different.
The 2011 Mcdonald’s Happy Meals Were The Real Thing!
2000’s Spongebob TV
On the post with Shrek Tv I said my little brother had this same SpongeBob Tv.
Miss Those Days
i actually have a ds and 3ds! i bought the ds during the pandemic and the 3ds like a year ago. i haven't touched the ds since 2021, but i love my 3ds! i also have a gameboy color and gameboy advance!
Some night my partner and I play Touchmaster..no it isn't an innuendo, just a simple DS game of puzzles.
I started out with the grey brick Nintendo. Gosh I loved that thing
I Know This Ain’t Who I Think It Is
This Show
Horrible, horrible show. They were all awful people for the most part and many ended up in trouble (shocker).
Load More Replies...Def Nostalgia As An Older Teen But Yes
Couldn't relate to most of this article because it was all early 2000s when I was a toddler but THIS. THIS is THE nostalgic image. I remember having Squinkies, slap bands, silly bands, a leopard Pillow Pet, Temple Run, Littlest Pet Shop, a Wii, 3DS, Loom bands and Lego Friends. All this image is missing is Zhu Zhu Pets
I'm born in 2009 but I can relate to almost all of the stuff except for a few
Load More Replies...Anyone else genuinely terrified that Herobrine would come into your world and mess s**t up or was I just a really gullible child lol?
OK but lego friends came really late, like my little sister liked it but I was way to old, so I wouldn't say early 2000's for some of these, same with minecraft and templerun, like sure it was popular when I was a kid, but it isn't really early 2000's, more like 2010's
I remember Lego Friends! I still have my collection of LPS toys, and my bracelet loom, and I think the shaped rubber bands are still around somewhere
Now This Is What I’m Talking About
Kahoot? as in 2013 starting online quiz platform Kahoot? bit out of place in here.
I usually used a nickname if we didn't have to use our own names so everyone was confused
Bratz Nostalgia
If U Don't Get This Ur Too Young
Miss This Show
I think this is what gave me an obsession with reality dating shows. It's trash TV but I can't look away (please send help)
I must be one of the few who hated this show. The horrible script and lousy acting drove me insane.
If U Had One Of These In The Late 90s And Early 00s U Were A Cool Kid
Kind on but off topic I hate when kids at school walk around with boom box’s and speakers blaring drake or some other rapper.
those are the people who play their s****y music in their cars, windows down, on full blast.
Load More Replies...I must be beyond uncool because I have never even seen these before. I'm guessing some sort music system?
I Miss These So Much!
A New Aged Furby. I Had A Fijit Friend And I Was Convinced That It Was Possessed Because It Would Turn On By Itself In The Middle Of The Night
The kids had a Furby in their playroom but after they got Guinea Pigs, we soon had to 'unalive' it. It had become the Guinea Pigs Satanic leader - no sleep to be had!! 8-)
Eh, Furbies are still scarier and more demonic. My furby had no batteries in it and I still heard "WAH WOOH WAAAHH" in the middle of the night from it once. :I
When i was 4 i got bourght a mini toolkit and a furby for mah b-day, and at midnight the fury would turn on and SING! i got tired of it one night, anx the tool kit had a mini slege hammer in, i smashed the s**t out of that things face!
My God, I feel old now that people are considering the early 2000s nostalgic....
People born after 9/11 can now legally drink in the US. So there's that...ಥ_ಥ
The only interactive toys I had growing up were fuzzy felts, plasticine, etc. Things we could actually touch and feel. No such things as home computers back then.
really? I had a home computer in 1983 so... older than that?
Load More Replies...I had my first two kids in 2004 & 2005 - so much of this related to them rather than my born in 1982 old self
