To put it mildly, millennials (and to some extent Gen X and Gen Z) aren't fond of baby boomers. Boomers hogged the economy and the world’s resources, we say, and they have no regard for what future generations will inherit.

But when Reddit user u/coolfreeusername asked the question, "Non-boomers ... , what's your most boomer opinion?" it led to a pretty awesome discovery. Turns out, younger generations and baby boomers share quite a few thoughts. Here are some of them.

Millennials And Gen-Z Are Sharing Their Most "Boomer" Opinions, But They Just Make Sense (35 Answers) Having your kid go “viral” for some stupid thing he did or just crying is a way to humiliate them and you are a disgusting parent for making the whole world laugh at them

That's what's so great about animals. Your dog doesn't care if he's famous for doing something stupid in a viral video, but your child will hate you forever!

I absolutely hate this and wish it was illegal. I plan to share a pic of my baby when she’s born and then maybe holiday/family pics. Some people literally post a pic of their kid everyday. It irritates me because how many pics did the kid consent to be posted? We want them to be less obsessed with technology yet we put it in their faces from day one.

I don't have kids but I find all this cruel and a bit sick. It's an extention of people who have to run to social media and do the "AITA: thing or have to post every thought in their head or post every thing they eat and look at for some kind of validation. If you have a child and are a parent, the tantrums, stupid things, annoying things, upsetting things...are all part of raising a child. It's supposed to go from them, to you. Their hearts, their sorrows, their being a little kid, them not having to learn proper behavior and emotions and strength. This is from them to you. Not to run to social media and pass the responsibility on, or the emotion on. Not to mock them. If your mindset is that this is funny or look at the little Assh**s BS I have to put up with, you're an evil parent. It's your job to deal with this. A kid is not a thing, or a pet, or something detached from you. This is abuse.

Jailers take away belts and shoelaces to prevent suicide (or strangulation of other prisoners). That's why "gangsta" rappers wore pants without belts and ahows without laces. The shoelace thing has gone away, and kids don't know about the belt thing. So they think it's just about having saggy pants and wear belts to hold the pants up.

Very true. Some people genuinely don't believe something happened if you don't post it and brag about it. I had that situation with people convincing me that I didn't accomplish something just because they didn't see photos on social networks and therefore concluded beyond any doubt that the event never occured. The paper proof was not sufficient.

I honestly failed to see how much people think every day things another human being is doing is a form of entertainment. Unless you’re looking for specific information like on a restaurant meal or how to get a stain out of something or something like that, I fail to see how filming “go shopping with me” or worse showing someone else’s videos and narrating them is entertaining. To me it just seems like these people are desperate for attention.

Some of my favorite videos on YouTube is watching the younger generations listen to music or watch movies that were popular in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. First, how did they become an adult without at least knowing something of this previous time, and second, they ask the strangest questions about what is on the computer screen in front of them . it is freaking hilarious. On a side note, watching car crash videos is also a great time.

Years ago, I bought a new washer and dryer. I had to argue to convince the salesman that I wanted dials and knobs, not a motherboard. I can fix mechanical appliances; I can't fix broken motherboards. And I was right. A few years later, the dryer's on/off switch broke. I replaced it with a light switch, and it's still working nearly 10 years later.

I don't think that it's related to one generation. I know very old people, old, middle aged, young, teenagers that only check once or twice a day. And other people from different ages who are always wanting to answer or write immediately. For example, my father and my mother do opposite, and my two sisters, too.

It’s nice to disconnect sometimes, while it’s also nice to keep a conversation going sometimes. I turn my phone off when I go to bed, and screen my calls the rest of the time. If you’ve ever worked the graveyard shift and had to sleep during the day, which is telemarketer prime time, or you work a busy switchboard or any other job that chains you to a telephone, you learn to f*****g hate phones.

I have given up trying to explain to her that I am fully aware that she has a life, and if she doesn't text back for hours it's because she's busy living it. She'll get back when she can. I dont panic that something bad has happened. If there is, I'll hear about it when her husband/son have a chance to let me know during said emergency. Curiously, it's not just hating people who disagree, but more often accusing people who disagree of being hateful. "If you don't agree with me about (whatever), it's proof that you hate (whatever) and therefore I am justified in treating you as less than me and mine." You can see this tactic throughout this threat.

See, "I don't need to agree with everything just to be /politically correct/" is a red flag for me. This one needs context, because if the thing on which we disagree is in the vein of racism/sexism/homophobia/transphobia, that's not just a difference in opinion. If someone disagrees with the statement that all people deserve the same basic human rights, that's not just a disagreement- that's that person showing their cards and letting you know they're an asshole. I'm not going to waste breath on being cordial with someone like that.

You are the person this entry is about. Your feelings are not what determines whether an opinion on a subject is more than mere opinion. Nor does the subject itself. Being of the opinion that something is wrong is much different than being of the opinion that people who do it should be discriminared against. Learn to refrain from adding intentionality to people's opinions where none has been given. Ask about motives, don't assume them. That is called "communication".

When someone's politics grows toxic, people are right to back away from them. Honestly, if you lived in 1940s Germany, would you have been able to say, "Yeah, he's a Nazi and works at a concentration camp and believes that Jews, non-straight people, Gypsies, etc. should all die -- but, hey, he's always been nice to me and he's good to his dog, so we're friends."

I think anonymity is more harmful than social media itself. People can post whatever they like on Reddit etc. knowing it will never be linked to them, and then gather into groups of like-minded people and insulate themselves from other ideas. If EVERYTHING you posted online was connected to your real identity, so your family could see what you are posting, a lot of right-wing hate fests would never get off the ground.

Unfortunately I think that the adage “the road to hell is paved with good intentions” is completely applicable here. I think that regulatory departments should have been upgraded and maintained regularly by both companies and our government. It’s sickens me to have learned how much our government has become big brother in America, using fear as a validation to literally a road every single one of our rights. That said just after my leg destroying accident I learned more from my Facebook page on knee reconstruction than I did from any of my medical team

Facebook was cool when people weren't allowed to post links, just photos and text. It let you keep in touch with people. Now it's just people spewing their unsupported opinions at each other, then arguing about them.

So I'll forgive some of that, but yeah, you're totally right in general, like don't leave one friend sitting there ignored in order to chat with another.

I f.u.c.k.i.n.g. hate how nowadays people of *all* ages will just start scrolling through their phone if there's a lull in conversation. Those lulls happen for a reason. They give people time to think about what else they can talk about and to start new subjects going. They give people breathing space to just 'be' in company. They give a moment to allow people to look around and the surroundings and take in what's what. I genuinely feel insulted that after one second of no one taking anything everyone's just instantly bored with everyone else's company and turns to online conversations instead.

Millennials And Gen-Z Are Sharing Their Most "Boomer" Opinions, But They Just Make Sense (35 Answers) Children are so coddled and over protected nowadays. Bring back the playgrounds of yesteryear where the monkey bars were sky high and the merry-go-round could go mach 5. If the little f***ers fall and get a bruise, they'll know not to be a dumbass next time (an invaluable life lesson). Teach them how to responsibly handle dangerous objects like knives and garden tools. The way we're raising children today is one of the main reasons we have so many stupid ass adults with no valuable life skills and a god complex cuz they think their actions don't effect them

I don't disagree. However, "back in the day" if you fell and broke something, no big deal to go to the hospital and get patched up. Nowadays going to the hospital could mean financial ruin to some families - and for that reason it's better not to take unnecessary risks.

I may get downvotes to hell for this but children are built to fall down. They are clumsy and uncordinated because they haven't learned how not to be. Evolution has made them resilient for just this reason. We are animals, our bodies are built for the learning curve of growing up. Think about how your kid fell that one time and was just fine but if you took the same fall you'd break. When I worked worked on emergency medicine we would joke that small kids bounce when adults would break. It's dark humor but it's reality in most cases.

So interesting back story here. In the 80s in nyc several children were seriously injured on the old school style playgrounds. After several lawsuits playgrounds started switching to the current plastic “safe” model. Only issue? Playground injuries have rocketed since then. If you fall off a playground of plastic and hit your head it’s still a serious fall. But now kids are lulled into a false sense of security as are parents and are not as careful causing more injuries. When we were kids we knew those things were dangerous and we better watch out!

I grew up in the 80s - we all had our own knives, so we could whittle, I handled power tools from about 8 years old, our parents never knew where we were - we came home when it got dark, there was no child safety on anything and not one kid in my town got seriously hurt, most of us didn't even break anything.

i agree that children should be taught self-sufficiency and be able to make their own mistakes, but not if the consequence to their decision is severely dangerous. there’s nothing wrong with safety measures. kids, especially little ones, can get seriously injured or killed from something as silly as falling off the monkey bars

Yes. More than that, kids always seem to find plenty of opportunities to get hurt on their own, I don't see the point of intentionally retrofitting playground hazards.

That can certainly be a pain, but it's also a benefit for many people. My day-to-day keyboard is a very vintage Dell-branded IBM Model M, which suits me well. Several of my coworkers have keyboards with tighter key spacing, which is ideal for them as they have smaller hands. Similarly, I have a coworker who hunt-and-peck types, not because he never learned to type properly, but because he has enormous fingers, which would benefit from an even larger key spacing.

What I miss in much of the current offerings is lyrics that I can actually HEAR. Mostly I simply cannot understand what the singer is actually saying. 60's and 70's artists could actually be understood. One could make out the words. Maybe today there's two many recording tracks on a song and it's all gotten too over-layed and complicated I don't know. Maybe it is just me!

Everything from kids toys to freakin cars needs some sort of crappy app these days. Why!? What if you plan on having this item for a long while and the app either gets deleted, gets malware, or just doesn't function due to the company not updating it? There are lots of things that don't require a power supply unit (adapter) at first glance, but if you open them up you will find an internal PSU instead. Very few domestic gadgets actually make use of the full 230/240v and we are seeing more and more integrated USB ports in plug sockets which also make use of an internal transformer. The point I am trying to make is that this is not a new problem - we have been throwing transformers and PSUs away for decades. They were just hidden. The problem as I see it is planned obsolescence, non-replaceable batteries in smartphones, and the fact that none of the corporations responsible for this care. I hate to keep kicking the same dog, but it is the rich that are making more money than they can ever spend while at the same time destroying the world. Our planet isn't dying. 5% of its populace are killing it. For money. (I have never kicked a dog and I do not intend to. I once trod on a snail but that was an accident)

LEGO. They are erasing the construction manual from the boxes and you should use an app. Whole family (3 generations of LEGO-addicts) hate this. You have to unlock the screen every few minutes and the manual gets deleted from the app when the box is older. Good bye f*cking harbor fire station.

I do not have, nor want, a "smart phone." A restaurant that we used to frequent at least once a month, no longer has menus. You either "down load" their menu and order at home, or "download" their menu on your "smart phone" or use your loyalty card to access their menu on their online ordering pads. I had to stand 15 feet away from the menu behind the counter, that was six feet higher. I had to place the order, pick it up, get my own drinks, and bus the table and they wanted a tip. The check for three meals and three drinks came to sixty bucks. In addition, the best thing about this place was their coffee in MUGS. Now they serve it in paper cups. Last time for us.

Not to mention that those apps also require fees or in-app purchases to use. So not only planned obsolescence, but nickel and dime ripoffs as well. Can’t we ever be allowed to pay for something just once and be done with it, instead of having to pay and pay and pay?

Speaking as a Gen X rep, I can confirm that I hate planned obsolescence but have a large collection of PSUs in my shed. So I don't really know where that leaves me except to say that I have and enjoy a number of apps on my phone. Some are better than others is all I've got on that, really. Don't know if I've helped or muddied the waters. Good luck with it either way.

This, and I'm getting really annoyed by every retailer and every chain store, service, whatever, getting its own app. I have limited space on my phone, I'm not going to keep a bajillion apps I'm likely to use two minutes every three months. I wish these chains just made a.... a Netflix for coupons or something already.

We don’t all work 9a-5p, M-F. My husband starts work at 3am, so goes to bed about 6pm. I had a later bedtime when I was a toddler. I also worked a graveyard shift fir a couple years when I was younger, so would sleep during the day. My daughters, now 32 and 35, often thank me for the lack of internet and electronic gadgets in the house during their childhood. They spent time outside! They built clubhouses out of carboard boxes, dug in the dirt, went to playgrounds, road their bikes, built forts in the snow - you get the picture. Today, kids think having to spend time outdoors to entertain themselves is is a punishment.

I don't like this one. Cell phones and tablets are a party of daily life and if your kid doesn't learn to use one they're going to be at a disadvantage. Since they're such expensive devices they're also pretty great tools to teach kids the importance of looking after what you have and using it carefully.

Yeah, because it would be so awful if your child had a quick way to reach out to you in case of emergency. I mean, you obviously don't have to buy your child the latest iPhone or something ridiculously expensive, but you are taking this technology demonization way too far.

My thoughts exactly. Back when cell phones became popular, my mother got me one for my birthday, but ended up giving it to me two weeks early after I had been attacked by a dog while I was going for a walk with our own dog. If I ever have kids, they‘ll get a cell phone and be taught what to do in case of an emergency as early as possible.

I think that it really depends on the age. A child should not have a phone or have unlimited acess to internet. Having a computer or tablet with some games is not a problem as soon as the kid is doing what needs to do before (homework and so).

I see so many parents just giving their young kids a tablet so they don't have to deal with them. It's a weird form of avoiding parenting IMHO. Kids need interaction. They need to play. They need to learn to socialize. When they're older they should have some way to contact parents. Granted we've come to a point of over parenting that means people call CPS if kids walk alone to and from elementary school. It's a tough line to walk when it comes to technology. I think it really comes down to finding balance.

My husband and I agreed that when we have children - with the exception of a basic TracFone for safety reasons - until a child can work a job and pay for the phone/contract/airtime, they don't NEED a fancy phone. As for tablets, if the school says they have to have one, the school can provide one. Otherwise, the tablet we will purchase will be something like a Kindle, not a massively expensive iPad.

My little cousin had a cell phone at 5! I was disgusted by that thought until I learned somethings. One it was a special kind of phone that could only call certain numbers and receive calls from certain numbers. Second, his mom is a severe alcoholic. One day she had passed out and he thought she was dead. He was scared and called my aunt (his grandma) and because of that she lost custody. He was saved because of that phone.

I generally agree, but it depends on what's standard for your group of friends. For casual get-togethers at my house, my good friends always show up 15 minutes late. That's because they know I'm running around trying to make everything perfect right up to the last minute, and that 15 minutes gives me a chance to sit down and relax for a moment. On the other hand, we invited a couple for dinner a few weeks ago, and they were more than an hour late (with no text, phone call, or apology). I was really annoyed, but they apparently thought it was pretty standard practice. Maybe in their circle of friends it is.

I agree entirely. But there's a flip side to this coin. Arriving too early is also inconsiderate. If you arranged 8pm then people are expecting you for 8pm. Please don't turn up at 7:30pm because things may not be ready. When I say 'things' I mainly mean me, but I still may be running around juggling mushroom vol-au-vents at that time. If we say ten minutes either side then we're all happy aren't we? As an aside, I have depression and acute social anxiety so I may be overreacting here. But that's how I feel about punctuality so there you go.

We waited 30 minutes for some people to join us on an outing then left without them. Later that day I got a quite "hurt" phone call saying it wasn't fair that we didn't wait for them. My reply was it was a bit unfair of them to have been so late without phoning.

Hard disagree!! Being extra stressed out, especially for someone with anxiety, when you're planning on meeting up for a drink at a friend's place is completely unnecessary and leads to isolation. For a lot of events, timing doesn't matter...so don't construct drama for nothing. But if the event involves one person sitting alone at a bar, or a dinner going cold, then absolutely try to be on time or keep your company updated.

Cancel culture is stupid. Everyone is stupid when they're young and dumb. You make bad decisions sometimes and the you you are today isn't necessarily the you that you used to be. Social media should have a 7 year mandatory erase period. Any tweet or fb post or whatever disappears after 7 years permanently.

The problem is it depends on what was said or done. If someone harrassed people in their younger days and essentially got away with it, I understand the desire to hit back. If a national hero kept slaves, we should acknowledge that they were far from perfect.

Yes, but we also need to acknowledge their current behavior. If the person is willing to own up to it and say "yeah I did crappy things, I'm not perfect, I'm sorry" we need to accept that too.

How could you possibly know that the norms of your time wouldn’t measure up to those of people who decided what those new standards were long after you made them. Everyone is a work in progress and you live, learn and modify your views over time. To throw a tweet from when they were 13 at someone when they’re 25 is ludicrous BS. I suspect that those doing the cancelling with fall foul of their own rules in ten years time. No one (historical or others) can possibly live up to the impossible moral standards touted by such people.

My dad was a perfect example of that! When he & my mom were first married, he had his own radio & television repair business, and almost all his customers were black - he was one of the few white men who would do business with black people. Over the years, his true nature came out & he was a nasty, vicious racist. He was also emotionally & mentally abusive, and the last 10 years of his life I rarely spent any time with him, and I absolutely do not regret it.

Cancel culture. In my area of America some overzealous people actually tore down a statue thinking it was a historical figure when it was actually a statue of Don Quixote, They also change the name that had the word Dixie in it because they associated that with the south when in fact that was somebody’s last name. It’s pretty pathetic. We have to keep symbols of our past mistakes in our lives so that we don’t continue to make them. Those symbols should not be in an inappropriate place, To have a symbol of a racist be on the steps of your so called fair and impartial courthouse it’s just a constant reminders of those people whose race are victims that they may continue to be victimized.

Cancel culture is called "the consequences of actions". Every single person in the world has the right to follow/purchase/subscribe/etc. to the things/brands/people they like/support/believe in. When one of the entities they support exhibits bad behavior, then they have the option of no longer supporting them. The term "cancel culture" was created by American Conservatives as way to blame someone else rather than take responsibility for their behavior.

No cancel culture is called "the punishment for something you did so long ago that you aren't even the same person anymore". It may have started off as something good, and hell there may still be a few legitimate cases around but you shouldn't judge someone for something they said 9 years ago when they were a stupid 18 year old. I'm sure I said a lot of crap when I was 20 that I don't believe in anymore and I sure as hell don't deserve to be judged for awful opinions I had due to the environment I was raised in. Just because someone was racist at 19 doesn't mean they're racist at 25. Just because someone was "pro life" at 21, doesn't mean they're still pro life at 30. People's opinions change as they become more informed about the world, and if we keep judging everyone based only on what they did in the past nobody is going to be motivated to be better people.

Am 29: If the conversation is going to take more than 3-5 texts (or emails), just call me. Social media is bad for your health. Social media is not real life. Never take anything said on Twitter/Facebook/Reddit seriously. Kids these days need to go play outside more. Participation trophies are stupid. This is coming from someone who had a few as a kid. Taxes aren't hard to figure out, especially if you don't own a house.

Or have Karens policing parents who allow their kids to be “free range”, even if they have boundaries they can’t cross (certain streets or parks, etc). Hell, I was free range as a kid, but had boundary lines of certain streets I couldn’t cross. I remember crossing one once. My mother knew about it before I got home, because there was a network of parents who called each other when they saw the kids doing something they shouldn’t. They weren’t Karens, because they only called when they saw something really against the rules, and only to give a heads up, not dictate.

The thing with participation trophies for me is that I knew damn well that “participation” meant I lost. I was under no illusions that it was the same thing as winning and I strongly doubt any of my peers were either. As for taxes, what bugs me about that is the number of Americans who blame schools, when the average worker in New Zealand doesn’t have to submit any paperwork about their taxes at all and even a slightly nonstandard worker like me can file my taxes by filling out a few basic details on the IRD website.

    1. calling is a lot more time consuming then texts, which you can answer in your own time. 2. social media can be toxic, but it’s another way to connect with friends and there’s variations. it’s not all celebrities dancing on tiktok. 3. plenty of kids play outside. some of them can’t, either because the area they live in is unsafe or any other reason. there’s also A PANDEMIC 4. this whole “pARtiCiPaTiOn TrOPhY” nonsense needs to stop. it’s not the kids who want the trophies, it’s the parents. as a kid, i couldn’t care less about whatever participation trophies i got. they’re all probably in a box somewhere. but i’ve seen parents scream over the fact that x kid got something their kid didn’t. 5. this i agree with, but they take time to figure out and manage. especially as a college student with tons of other stuff on your plate.

I would love to play outside, but unfortunately there's no one to play with. I'm an only child and the only kids around either: are too old for me, my parents don't want me around them, or I'm to shy to talk to them. We live near a small playground and I've asked my parents before if I could go there on my own. But, a predator (who actually kidnapped a little girl) lives nearby the park. So yeah, I could still play outside on my own, but it's not as fun by yourself 🤷‍♀️

Social media needs to be recognized as a real place, because while it doesn't physically exist it is still a place where people can make connections, lose friends, get bullied, or boost their self-esteem. It's important to recognise the harm of social media, definitely but it is a real place for the people who use.

It's nice to have access to unlimited movies and TV, but like. For the most part I wind up just watching the same sitcom over and over to decompress after work. I wonder how much I could have saved by just getting B99 and King of the Hill box sets instead of paying for Hulu for four years. And anything where they mail you a box of curated crap every month is absolutely unnecessary, toot f***ing sweet.

My dad worked for the BBC and I grew up awed when I found out that in America there were hundreds of channels (we had only three until I was 17 and Channel 4 started). My dad assured me that they were hundreds of channels of utter crap. Now we too have access to the same amount I know he was speaking the truth. I would hazard a guess that we've gained the equivalent of one or two extra channels of decent content.

Yes! This is where voice tech would’ve been the more logical choice. I don’t know why they went with something you have to look away from the road to use. Even the old low tech buttons and dials could be memorized, but a screen has to be looked at—-and god forbid you hit a bump and your finger taps the wrong command!!

It all depends. There are actual bad habits, issues, conditions, and problems that should be addressed (mental issues, drug addiction, etc). But people tend to butt in where there isn’t a problem. I mean, if it’s something like you’re very skinny, but you’re healthy and happy and not anorexic, then I say you should be left alone. But if you’re too skinny, unhealthy, unhappy, and obsessively starving yourself because you see yourself as fat, then there should be an intervention, and you should seek help.

I think the body positivity movement has morphed into this. Obviously, no one should be bullied because of their appearance, but don't spread the lie that it's healthy to be obese. Nearly 3 million people die every year because of obesity; it puts undue stress on your bones, joints, and organs.

I agree about instant gratification and the importance of patience and hard work, but I also think it's important to separate that from this kind of messed up idea western culture has that suffering makes you a better person. There's a difference between instant access to luxury items vs to necessary resources (affordable food, water, shelter, healthcare, and in this day and age, internet. To clarify, I'm not saying everyone needs social media, I'm saying it is nearly impossible to go to school or work today without access to online resources.)

And, by the time you've saved up for it you've had the time to decide if it's something you really want and should be buying, or not. Plus, deciding if it's a want or an actual need. If you're saving, if the s*** hits the fan you still have that money you were saving for a want available to help with that emergency. Instant gratification can backfire and cause problems in the long run that you will not find any gratification about.

Withholding gratification for a long time usually brings bitterness, jealousy and anger. Prolonged adversity makes people cruel and unable to change. The few who can come over either being spoiled or put down the ones we usually call a leader. But not all leaders are good people.

Teen guys are the scary ones. Mostly because it doesn't take much for them to decide as a group to do something awful on a whim. ProTip to teen boys out there: getting in the same hot tub as two women with your group of five guys and hitting on them is creepy. So is getting out of the hot tub at the same time they do and following them over to the outdoor shower to watch them rinse off before they leave the pool area.

Any time you have a group of six or more people, the IQ of each of them sinks to the lowest IQ of the group. This number goes to four if there are costumes involved. If the costumes are of pirates, the number is two

Sorry to have to inform you, but to help prevent it it requires exercising your core muscles to provide support, back, side and abdomen. Stretching too. If muscles can stretch when they need to your less likely to hurt those muscles should they need to stretch and cant. Google good body mechanics. Most people don't know what they are. No guarantee here. I majorly hurt my back even having done all of the above. Herniated disc. Sometimes it just happens. But my recovery was easier because of all that. Too many younger people are having back pain. Try doing these things above and save back pain for old age.

The second article sheds light on the generational differences and shared opinions between millennials and baby boomers. Interestingly, it echoes sentiments similar to those expressed in the first article, where millennials reflect on their gradual acceptance of middle-aged behaviors.

This fascinating convergence is reminiscent of millennials embracing certain middle-aged traits, showing how both generations can share similar views as they age.

Yeah the term security is a misnomer. For those of you who don’t know, being on Social Security for any reason is forced poverty. At some point in time in your life you’re going to have to give up all your possessions in order to live on a meager monthly income, you’re going to have to jump through 100 hoops to get it and the government is going to demand some of that income back in order to pay for your health care. And God for bid you make a mistake about any of your living conditions because you will pay for it big time. If you can…stay out of the system for as long as you are able

People are way too overprotective of kids these days. It's making for anxious adults who aren't confident in their own abilities. I grew up underneath a helicopter parent, who was WAY too overprotective. I have to actively force myself to not be that way with my kids. Which, maybe I've swung too far in the opposite direction, but I really want my kids to do things on their own and not be 18 years old on the highway having a panic attack because they don't know what to do with a flat tire (not my finest moment). I also want to be able to freakin leave my kids in the car for TWO MINUTES while I step inside the gas station to pay for my gas when the card reader outside is down. To me, it's not worth the damned hassle to get both kids out of the car, herd them inside, make sure they keep their sticky fingers to themselves just to pay for gas. I always end up going to a different station if that's the case. I remember being 8 years old, bored in the grocery store and given my mom's keys to sit in the car and read. Can't do that today, it's child abuse via neglect. Like, come on. I don't do this things, not because it makes my kids safer, but because it lessens the chance that I'll be investigated for something that I don't think is inherently wrong. I sometimes feel like the equivalent of the old lady whining about kids these days. I'll be 33 in a month, btw.

there's a big difference between leaving your 3 month old in the car in the summer with the windows rolled up while you go to the bar, and leaving your 10 year old in the car in the summer with the windows down, water, and a book to read while you shop for groceries. it's so frustrating to me that we, as a society, can't seem to tell the difference.

In the US things have really gotten out of control. There's a difference between being an irresponsible parent and leaving your kids in the car for 2 minutes while you have the keys. But it seems that even letting your children walk home from school unsupervised is enough for the CPS to investigate you. It's quite ridiculous that neighbors call the police because Jimmy from next door is riding his bike while his mother isn't watching him. And the police informs CPS because that kind of bad parenting really needs to be addressed.

100% We used to walk along agriculture maintenance roads in the farmland around my house. Super safe and harmless. Many wonderful adventures were had there as kids. Now they're all fenced and locked, and if they're not some touchy farmer who's watched too much Fox news fear mongering, or stuffed shirt county worker will come threaten to call the police just for kids walking down a dirt road. Then they all complain that kids need to get outside more. Where? The same neighborhood park every day? Kids don't need more safe spaces and playground equipment. They need rocks and sticks and friends and imagination.

I think the problem is many people crave attention, and doing something ridiculous is the shortest path to get there. I sat down and made two 'good' youtube videos a few years ago. I had no interest in becoming well-known for no reason. I wanted to convey information. A 'like' because you've actually helped convey information to someone is worth 1000x more than a 'like' because you've just entertained someone for a few seconds.

it depends on context. public spaces should be accessible to people in wheelchairs or any other disability, but there’s nothing wrong with not inviting someone to brunch because you don’t want to see them.

I think this is more true from the perspective of minority groups (although I don't know which side the author is coming from). Queer spaces don't have to work to include straight/cis people, POC spaces shouldn't cater to white people, disabled spaces shouldn't have to accommodate the finer feelings of abled people. But if you're telling me that we shouldn't be working to make Public spaces accessible and safe for minorities, that's a different problem. Then again, the wording is really vague and this may not be what they were going for at all.

"influencers" have existed in one form or another for all time. In the 18th century it was aristorcrats. In the 20th it was pop musicians. The problem is when the whole system became monetised- and "influencing" became an industry in itself- no longer connected to talent or other means of creative expression. That industrialisation of influence is incredibly harmful, but sadly, just an inevitable product of a capitalist system.

There are actually two "target" age groups for influencers as far as I can see. One is the young set covering makeup and fashion, and the other is cleaning and organising and aimed at an older demographic. What 14 year old is going to be "influenced" by the latest Vax cordless vacuum, or which Big Box store sells the best storage containers? This latter group tend to market themselves as "motivational" rather than influencers, and seem to be mostly of the SAHM Vlogger variety - but it's the same thing as far as I can see: they're still sent some fancy sonic cleaning brush to use on their shower tiles, and show off the brand name of their kettles and whatnot.

I feel the need to chime in here. There are valid reasons for people to complain about a poor education system in America. There are valid reasons for people to complain about an absolute ineffective government (For 99% of Americans), There are valid reasons for people to complain about and unjust system. There are valid reasons for people to complain about a lack of quality in our healthcare system that’s going downhill fast. When a lot of people are complaining about some thing we need to not tell them to shut up we need to find out if there’s a valid reason for their complaints and then we need to fix that thing that they’re complaining about. I think nine times out of 10 those complaints which are usually perceived as people whining are valid And instead of fixing things we end up blaming victims

For some it really isn't their fault. Like having crackhead parents will really mess a kid up. But for most it's not facing up to their own issues, to not even acknowledging they're there. I see it as a lack of accountability over their own lives.

Absolutely everything is disposable nowadays. Nothing is made to last anymore. If you find something you like, it'll be worn out in a year and probably not made anymore when you want to buy a replacement. It's the absolute worst with clothes and kid's toys. With kid's toys, by giving them such disposable toys, it discourages them from being nice with and taking care of their possessions. Why does it matter when it's going to get worn out so quickly and they'll be bought a replacement. I also think it's a shame that these kids won't have their toys to pass on to their own children because it couldn't last. Fun fact: Jeans originally became so popular because of their durability and affordability. They really appealed to the working-class man whose clothes were constantly getting worn out and didn't have the money to constantly spend on new clothes. Now if you want a pair of jeans of that quality, it's $60+ dollars.

I think $60 for a sturdy pair of jeans is actually pretty comparable to the price of original 501s. For example, bricklayers in 1870-1880 made between $2.50 and $3/day, and jeans cost about $1.60. So about half a day's labor. Bricklayers now make between $15 and $50/hour depending on where they work, so even at the lowest end a $60 pair of jeans is half a day's labor.

Jeans of the quality of the early Levi's have never been cheap, and $60 is likely something of a price drop in adjusted terms. This was pretty much true for all clothing - if you wanted quality that lasted, you paid more. The difference back when was, there was no expectation that the average person would have a big wardrobe. That's something we need to get back to.

Call people if it’s urgent, text if you want a response later. It’s like a house phone and a letter. Lots of young people get anxiety when their phone rings, I see them stare at their phones waiting for the ringing to stop and then text to reply. “Why are you calling?” Because sometimes it’s a better way to relay information and it’s more personal.

I find phone calls incredibly intrusive. I tried to explain this to my grandmother who'd call at the weirdest times (even though she could text - she never got to the whatsapp point, but she did sms), and she figured that if it was important for her, it must be important for me. That girls online showing off their bodies to get views isn't a good thing. So many do it. If u just sign up for TikTok for example, it is initially and automatically full of videos of girls showing off their bodies. U gotta keep avoiding those to get it off your fyp. And all of their dances they try and sexualize themselves so people keep watching. I'm 19 btw.

Then society needs to stop teaching little girls that their only true value lies in how much people rate their appearance. It's ridiculous blaming the young for then acting on this. Try for yourself. Stop commenting on the appearance of any females you meet - from babies up to the elderly. Only comment on the appearance of the males you meet. Anything, from 'did you get your hair cut?' through 'new shoes? cool' to 'he's such a handsome little chap'. You can compliment a female on anything else, such as her skills or personality traits like humour or intelligence, and you can compliment her appearance if she brings it up. You are going to be shocked how hard you find both of these. But you are literally going to be part of the solution.

Stop being on your phone while you are talking to someone! It is so annoying and rude. I feel like people can't even have a conversation that lasts longer than 5 minutes without staring at their phone. As soon as someone starts looking at their phone while having a conversation, I'm not interested in talking to them anymore. Obviously it's totally okay if it's something super important, but some people just want to text with others, watch videos and like photos while talking to you. So disrespectful.

How about enough money to support and raise your children while still providing for your family. A stable home environment (doesn't mean a spouse/partner bc plenty of families are much more stable with one parent). The maturity (not age...maturity) to realize that kids take a lot out of you. If you can't invest the time to love them and teach and guide them you probably aren't ready for the commitment it takes to raise a child. Also, the willingness to give up some things like time with friends, spontaneous trips with the friends, bar nights or dancing. Sure you can still do those things but it surely won't be as often. Kids take priority over the personal freedoms you had prior to them. Their well being > a new car or new iPhone if you can't afford both.

Doing your own handi-work is rewarding and builds character. I've noticed a lot of younger people's first response to things breaking or needing to be replaced is to hire a repair person or to just buy a new item, without attempting to fix it with their own two hands. Doing it yourself teaches you a skill that you can use to help your friends and family, makes you smarter and more well rounded, and will also help keep you calm and cool in thr face of life's frustrations. When bad things happen, it's not the end of the world. You've fixed things before and you can learn to do it again. I'm not suggesting spending hours and hours trying how to handle your own plumbing or electricity, but if your car makes a weird noise, or your walls need a fresh coat of paint or spackle, you can watch a 5 minute youtube tutorial and do it yourself.

I agree with this 1000%. My father used to have me "help" him fix things when I was younger. He would launch into these long explanations about what he was doing and why, and was soooo boring and I hated it. Now that I own my home, I am so thankful that I "helped" when I was younger because there are so many repairs that I can do myself and I save thousands on home repairs and replacements.

Even if you aren't very handy, take a broken appliance as an educational moment. Take the damned thing apart! At least you will have a better understanding of how to disassemble things, insight into the theory of operation of the device, and you may even find what is wrong. My hobby is picking up appliances off the curb and doing this. It's where both my vacuum cleaners came from, my string trimmer, and several fans, and my carpet shampooer. Keep digging deeper until you find what killed it, sometimes you don't even need parts.

The boomer solution - going to the library to get a book on the topic - is an increasingly vanishing resource in some parts of the world. It's a boomer opinion with a Gen X/Millenial solution.

I recommend learning the basics of plumbing and electrical, though. You shouldn't need a plummer to unclog your toilet, or an electrician to change out a light switch.

"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects." Even if some of it is a bit silly, Heinlein had a point in all that: do it yourself if you can, learn how if you can't and it's not a huge imposition to do so.

Because of that technology it's also almost impossible to fix cars on the roadside. Remember the times when your headlight went out and you put in a new lamp in 5 minutes? Today you have to remove the left front wheel to reach the screw that holds the cover to get to the fitting which is secured with 5 torx-screws to replace the lamp.

The elderly lady was saying " what is the problem ? I gave 15 %." All this poor lady was trying to do was get a haircut and instead was tip shamed. I thing tipping needs to be eliminated. We are already paying for the service and the product .

Communities within neighbourhoods would be lovely. My mum talks about it all the time, but it's something I've never experienced myself. Like, we know our neighbours, but that's about it. I'd love to live on a street or in a suburb where people have little get-togethers (street parties for big events) or just generally know and look out for each other on a more meaningful level. Sadly I am but a lowly 23 year old, far off owning my own property, but one day I would love to "be that person" and bake brownies for my little cul-de-sac. Sorry I can't back to all these comments, I'm overwhelmed lol, but I'm taking notes for future me. Currently live on a council estate where not everyone gets on (there's a cockerel war rn) so now is not the time to get cuddly with the neighbours lol.

I live in a condominium complex. I have neighbors from Brazil, from Tibet, from Japan, from Ireland etc. We all watch each other’s back’s, loan each other things and are supportive. It’s so much nicer to walk over to the Brazilian house and knock on the door and let them know that their party is a little too loud then to have to call the cops on them. I love my neighbors and I will always take the opportunity to get to know my neighbors no matter where I live. I think knowing your neighbors is one of the most important things that you can do in life. In fact they may end up saving your life one day or visa versus. It feels a lot better to know I can trust my neighbors then to be suspicious of them

I always kinda frown whenever I read posts like these. The neighborhood I live in is full of people of the same culture, and everybody knows each other and is friends with everyone else--except for me and, like, 4 total other families (whose houses are very spread out and not near each other at ALL) who aren't of the same culture. The people of all the same culture tend to butt everybody else out for whatever reason. So even though it's a townhouse (meaning all the houses are literally connected and only thin walls separate us), we're excluded from any and all other people.

I grew up knowing a few of our neighbors but we never really did big events in the suburbs, not even really with the ones we were close with. I always thought the idea was neat but my family just wasn’t that way. When our close neighbors died or moved, we never really met our new neighbors and tended to keep to ourselves. We also live on the outskirts of a bad city so I kind of get it. The gangs are bad.

I’ve seen people text, be on the phone, change their clothes, do make up, eat/drink, read a newspaper or book, have a dog or baby in their lap, rummage around in another seat or not looking at the road while talking to a passenger. I’ve even witnessed drunk drivers and people falling asleep at the wheel.

People take message apps way to personally. Crying over "being left on read" because someone hasn't responded in a couple of hours is just pathetic. Just because somebody hasn't checked their messages in a day doesn't mean they are ghosting you either. Stop trying to normalize your phone addiction by painting people who aren't as addicted as bad people, or accuse them of neglectful behavior or abandonment. Message apps can be exhausting for some people. Not everyone feels like texting 24/7. If it's a thing that requires immediate response or an emergency, you just call. Phones can do that.

I absolutely despise social media, it’s wrecked peoples’ attention spans and it shows, you can’t even go to the bar or gym with people without them totally ignoring something you say because they’re on their phones checking Instagram or some other pointless trash, and these are the same people saying I’m rude because I don’t respond to messages instantly, take a look in the mirror lol, not like I have a life outside of my phone or anything… It’s not just the people I know, I see it all the time, I’ve been cutting down my usage of all social media because now I just think “what’s the point in this?” it’s just people I don’t give a shit about in real life sharing absolute garbage. I only have Facebook, Twitter and reddit and can barely stand those three, I go on every now and then but it doesn’t last long, rather spend my time doing something I actually enjoy instead of clicking on random posts to get a quick dopamine hit.

Social media has its good points and it’s bad points. I’m not into the self aggrandizement or the bullying or the hyper judge mental as him or the hyper correctional people who love to correct absolutely everything Nor do I appreciate people who pretend to be holier than now or know more than they really do. On the other hand I learned more from social media and people sharing their experiences when they suffered the same medical issues that I did then I ever learned from any of the people that were on my medical team

There was a break somewhere in the early 1990s, where they started spending less on writers and more on production. The camera work, lighting, set design, etc. have generally improved across the board. However, poor writing shows right through. Some shows managed to be captivating, even with cardboard sets.

I've been rewatching some old TV shows. And I cannot disagree with this more. Compare Battlestar Galactica and Galactica 1980 with the remake. I still haven't gotten through the original Lost in Space because it's so stupid. Star Trek seemed great in the 70s because we didn't know better. Or maybe, just Sci-Fi has gotten better. One exception, original Twilight Zone stands the test of time.

Around 2015 they started to make it all about wokeness, inclusion and political correctness on the cost of storywriting, character development and overall entertainment value. Take a look at the new HE-Man, the live action Powerpuff Girls remake or any CW superhero show. The mainstream industry fell into that hole while smaller productions and Anime studios can handle things better nowadays

Deciding to have children with your significant other is a bigger commitment than getting married. I don't understand couple's who are in their 30s and decide to have children together but refuse to get married because that's too much of a commitment. It boggles my mind. How does sharing a child for the rest of your life not scare you away but signing a legal paper does freak you out? I have a few acquaintances who are in their mid 30s and in long term relationships where they've had kids but refuse to get married because they're afraid of getting divorced.

Ask the kids what they think of "non-legal" marriages. For the most part they feel really insecure. And do not give me that crap that they will feel even more insecure in a divorce. One is that anyone can just walk away, boy that really makes kids feel secure and the other is a commitment that someone cannot live up to for many reasons. Abuse is NOT a reason, it is a crime.

You can want to stay together for the rest of your lifes and still not want to marry. If you love each other, why would you need some outside institution - be that a church or a registry office - to confirm that? Unless you believe that God is gonna condemn you to hell because living together without being married is an abomination in His eyes, what would actually be the difference between a married and an unmarried couple?

Yeah, choices exist for INDIVIDUALS. But when you make a choice that has a huge impact on another person then it is someone else's business. Children are not toys nor are they accoutrements to your lifestyle. If you cannot make a commitment to a husband or wife, what makes you think you can have a commitment to a child?

I tend to agree, but that said there may be very real reasons that people do not get married. The ones that come to mind are legal, financial, religious. Had a friend whose "partner" would've lost access to a rather large cash stream if/when she ever married. Given the size of it, I absolutely understood the decision not to.
