Money can be a blessing and a curse. Especially if you didn't have to work hard and just happen to have it.

According to clinical psychologist Dr. Tian Dayton, children of wealth often begin life with prescribed identities and a sense of social and financial superiority.

The absence of struggle and adversity can hinder their development of resilience and empathy, leading to a distorted worldview where entitlement replaces gratitude.

Interested in real-life examples of this, Reddit user ThrowRAmagicia posted a question on the platform, asking people to describe the worst cases of "rich kid syndrome" they had ever seen. Here are some of the most memorable replies.

30 People Share The Worst Case Of "Rich Kid Syndrome" They've Ever Seen Not sure if this is worse case... but... actually a rich kid being nice. In college, there was a Saudi Arabian kid who's father bought him a new Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV. Paid in full. I was casual friends with him and his roommate. His roommate was a year behind him, and just an average dude from the US. He graduated and is in process of moving back to Saudi Arabia, to work at his father's company. He just handed the keys to his roommate and gave him the Jeep, signed the title over to him. The roommate didn't have a car. He said his roommate was a good friend to him and wanted to give him a goodbye present. The roommate drove that Jeep until he couldn't drive it anymore, many years.

exactly, there's many a rich entitled brat out there that would just let the car sit in a scrapyard/landfill instead.

My college had a lot of foreign students (nearly a third of our population). At the end of the year, many would throw TV's, computers, etc. into the pond because they couldn't bring them back with them and/or it was just easier to get a new one once back home.

That's common with all college students. They have to clear their dorm room for the summer, and they're flying home. Can't afford to ship all that stuff, and all their friends have the same problem, so - it ends up in the dumpster. (Moral - go dumpster diving at colleges when classes end in May.)

the brazillian exchange students did this, kind of. they go there and one bought a hummer and the other bought a mustang because he thought his friend was "too flashy" with the hummer. didn't gift them to anyone though. just brought it in to sell it back after 2 years when they went home. we asked why they didn't just lease it or something, and they're like "nah too many restrictions on mileage and stuff. buying is more convenient"

We had a rich dude from Saudi Arabia in one of my math study groups. He was alright but definitely confused by the idea that I didn't own a car because my mom and dad had blue collar jobs. And that I worked part time. I made a pretty ok hourly wage considering it was the recession but I typically worked 10 hours a week. (The recession also escaped his understanding.) He did buy me cough syrup once when I was sick. It was Delsym, which is the good stuff.

I mean, it's a major A-hole move, but I am not surprised that a dumba** who bought a land-bound-aircraft-carrier as his daily drive has not enough common sense to understand that his dumb decisions don't excuse him from parking it on handicapped spaces.

It would mean that you could "buy" government services, which would leave those without funds even more helpless. But it might prompt those with tons of money to perhaps funnel some of it back to the community in a fashion, if only to gain more influence, so there's that.

Used to have a boss who lived next to the car pound in Chelsea, he'd go out and double park on the King's Road if he was drinking so a) he wouldn't have to waste time finding a parking spot and b) someone would drive his car home.

Not really a true statement because that attitude with the right cop will get the vehicle impounded and that's gonna cost way more than $250. Where I live if your tire is even touching the blue line, it's viewed as parking in the space.

"Those born into wealth do not necessarily learn the lessons of climbing the ladder towards success," Dr. Tian Dayton, the author of Emotional Sobriety, told Bored Panda. "The necessity to work can develop self-discipline and doggedness, it is normalizing in that one is thrown in with others who are also trying to move forward in life. One has to learn to work with others; to get along, to take the lead, or to follow and be a team player."

According to the psychologist, "wealthy people can sometimes afford to isolate themselves in a world of privilege that doesn't develop these traits." She also added that wealth can set high standards of what we think of as achievement, making a child born into it feel that nothing they do will ever measure up to their family's.

"This can be debilitating," Dayton said. "If the family values equate money with achievement, they may feel that acquiring wealth is one of the only ways to feel successful."

30 People Share The Worst Case Of "Rich Kid Syndrome" They've Ever Seen Barbie and her daughter. I worked at a bank and a young girl came Into the bank complaining her credit card wasn't working. I told her it was maxed out and she needed to make a payment. The absolute look of shock and confusion on her face... you can tell she had absolutely no idea what the f**k we were talking about. "What do you mean a payment?? This is my money! I go shopping and put it all on this card what am I supposed to do? You need to figure this out!" When I tried to explain that credit cards aren't free money she said I was a liar and to figure it out cause I'm obviously new here. The manager gets Involved and she's so pissed she calls her mom... Barbie to come in. She literally looked like Barbie and that was also her name. SAME ISSUE! had no idea what we were talking about. Cards just pay for things! She has never paid a bill in her life. Hers has always worked... I explained that her card was set up that her husband would automatically pay it in full each month and she didn't understand. Long story short finally the husband comes and tells them to go to the car. Asked me to make it so all the daughters bills come out of his account. Worst part is she came back in and gave me this "see told you you're an idiot" look. The bill was f*****g wild too... She got this card a month ago and put over 10k on it. The wifes card was so outrageous I wouldn't even believe anyone could support that. What I dont get is how neither lady even understood the concept of money... It was just "I get whatever I want and this card does it"

There are people who are clueless about credit cards. Back in the early eighties, I worked at a rental car company that was affiliated with Sears and used to accept their credit cards. I remember talking to one of their credit department customer service representatives, who told me he had people call him who got their card with, say, a $500 credit limit. They would do something like buy a major appliance with it and max it out. Then they would make ONE payment of like $25, and thought that one payment restored the whole $500 limit on their card! Makes you just shake your head and go “Damn!”, doesn’t it?

I know of the opposite, My Dad's brother was a Marist Brother. He taught science at one of there schools in taiwan and hong kong. He had never had a pay check or money, everything he needed was taken care of by the Order. The nuns cleaned and cooked, no electric bill, he had no clue. He came to Europe to see the family. My parents house was having some building work so he stied with me in my two bedroom apartment. He didn't even no how to make coffee or a sandwich, work the washing machine. He was like a fish out of water in my place. He could just sit in silence for hours. I was in my late 20's at the time and my life was very busy and he couldn't figure out what I was doing half the time.

30 People Share The Worst Case Of "Rich Kid Syndrome" They've Ever Seen I worked at an upmarket boarding school for a while, living in the girls dormitory as a dorm matron. One of the girls was (we suspected) the daughter of a Russian oligarch and was obscenely wealthy and badly behaved. One of the biggest social events of the school year was a winter ball, and the girls had their dresses planned months in advance. The oligarch's daughter had a designer gold dress that she told everyone who would listen about how it cost 6k. Bear in mind she was just barely 14. Anyway a couple weeks before the ball she did something truly heinous, and I ended up grounding her from attending the ball. Oh boy, the tantrums and attempted manipulations the next two weeks were absolutely bonkers, but I'm not budging. She ended up cutting the dress into ribbons and throwing it in the dumpster in order to "punish me". Unfortunately for her I'm not her real mum and didn't pay for it so I didn't care.

Let me guess. This owner was NOT also the company founder, but their kid/grandkid/other descendant who grew up wealthy and inherited the company. Well, like so many other nepo babies, if this is an indicator of how they choose to run the company, they will bankrupt it soon enough. Folks, if you own a company and want your kid(s) to run it after you retire, please have them work their way up from janitor while they’re in school, so they have a clue how it actually runs before college, and won’t impose any of the f****d up theories they learn in business school when it’s their turn at the helm. Be sure to tell your employees in each department your kid(s) matriculate through to NOT treat them any differently than anyone else. Tell them that if your kid f***s up, they are to be treated like any employee who f***s up. No special treatment, period. They need to have real world experience of work, so they truly understand what their employees go through every damned day.

Dayton agrees that wealthy kids can be seen as those who have it all, which can also present a fair chunk of challenges. "This can mean that people don't judge them for who they are but for what they have," she explained. "Peers may turn their natural envy into judgment, or they may choose to be with them not only because of a natural affinity but for the inevitable perks that surround being connected to wealth."

"There is no more serious form of this than in marriage," the psychologist highlighted. "A wealthy young person may have someone who wants to marry them to attach themselves to wealth rather than basing the marriage on true love. This is an injustice to the wealthy person and a danger wealthy young people may face."

"Another function of status is that it can get comfortable, and it is bestowed on the wealthy person simply because they share a family status. The status can have the effect both of making them feel overly secure because of the way they are seen or insecure because while they do have status, they have no sense of having earned it," Dayton said.

He's not technically employed by the school, so he bills the parents directly. Went to check his account and found a few more 0s than there should be in his teaching account. His grandpa left him a 200k trust just for being the first born and before you know it, he's got an unwarranted sense of self importance. Went on to squander that 200k because he refuses to do an honest day's work, preferring the impossible dream of becoming a CEO immediately and having millions at his disposal. Despite having an MB in business management, he's run 6 endeavors into the ground to avoid getting a job while conning his parents into enabling him. Now he's 50 and has no prospects. But still refuses to just work. Every time I feel sad about not having enough income to realistically retire, I remind myself I could always be him, 50 years old with a 30 year gap on my resume. You know, $200 grand isn’t a fortune nowadays. If he had simply put that money into a managed investment account and gone to work like the rest of us, he could be sitting pretty for retirement by now. Especially if he continued to work until normal retirement age, and if he also invested a portion of his salary of all those decades. Thirty years ago, $200,000 could’ve bought him some properties he could’ve fixed up and rented out, and if he’d also continued working, he would have that passive income to retire on. Man, if I ever came into a nice chunk of change like that, there are so many things I would do to ensure it grew into an even bigger chunk of change. Seems the wrong people get bankrolled and the rest of us—-who would actually appreciate the windfall and do good and constructive things with it—-are left to struggle. My parents sunk money into one of my brothers who was pretty much of a deadbeat. They even bought him a house, and adjusted the down payment so the financed balance carried a monthly payment he could afford. They never did anything like that for the rest of us kids, and some of us truly struggled and would’ve greatly benefited from it, including paying them back , once we got securely back on our feet. My deadbeat brother, on the other hand, never appreciated and merely squandered everything they did for him—-and trash talked them behind their backs to anyone who would listen.

I was thinking the same. $200K isn’t an incredible life changing amount of money. Don’t get me wrong, I can only dream of being gifted something like that! But I also know I couldn’t simply quit my job and live off of that.

I went to school with all the sons and daughters of all the doctors and lawyers in town. I'm just a country boy so I never fit in in their eyes. I began working retail at the age of 7 so as we got older, working is just a day in the life for me. It makes me smile to see all of them working because mommy and daddy's money ain't paying their way.

200 grand? Actually not a lot of money for a trust fund. Usually one receives the proceeds from the trust which would only be a few thousand a year. Also many entrepreneurs go through multiple business ventures before hitting the lucrative one.

30 People Share The Worst Case Of "Rich Kid Syndrome" They've Ever Seen When I was at university I was friendly with a guy who lived on my floor who was from a rich family, like his family had villas in Spain and Italy as well as a big house in the countryside in the UK. He was actually quite a nice bloke, but he regularly came out with things that only a rich kid could say. He once tried to be relatable by mentioning how annoying it was when you didn't realize your cleaner or gardener were in the house and how awkward it was. Like, brother, most people just clean their own homes. As I said, he was quite a nice bloke, he wasn't being malicious but he was just so sheltered from what the average person has to go through.

these situations are really common here. We have something like a 40% unemployment rate and 10% middle class, the other 50% basically struggling to survive. So most middle class - ie about 8m people - have servants.

Sounds like a boss of mine. We were talking about extra-curriculars my kids were choosing at school and my boss said something along the lines of "Do they even have Hone-Ec anymore? We just had maids so our schools never had that class."

Views of why people are rich have changed significantly over the past years, with a growing share of Americans (65%) saying the main reason someone is wealthy is because they possess more advantages than other people. Far fewer think it's because they have worked harder than others (33%).

ThrowRAmagicia shares this sentiment and thinks that because of it, the rich and the average folk can never truly understand one another, either. "Rich people are either born into their lifestyle or they had a ton of luck. They will never comprehend what it's like to never be able to get what you desire," they said. "Getting everything they want is just a given."

I met a young lady years ago. From a stupidly rich English family, went to the posh private schools, the works. But, she was very down to earth and always insisted that her parents were wealthy, not her. She showed me pictures of her car, a Citroen 2CV (a French "people's car" that looks like a tin snail), complete with pictures of the engine rebuild she did herself. She said that she used to drive that into school and park next to the popular girls' Mercedes and Bentleys just to annoy them. Money doesn't always equal snottiness... this lady got it!

30 People Share The Worst Case Of "Rich Kid Syndrome" They've Ever Seen I worked for billionaires a few years ago as a nanny. I sat in for story time @ the kids private school. We were reading a children’s book about African students who go to school in mud huts. Basically, we learned that the kids need to work together to rebuild the school after every rainy season because the mud hut washes away… or something like that. The teacher asked if any of the kids had questions after we finished the book. The first question was “is this about public schools?” The children were 8 years old.

the difference between 1930 and the 2010s+ is access to information. an 8 year old today has access to a substantial amount of info at their disposal. a kid in 1930 had their parents, a newspaper, the radio etc... they couldn't just look anything up whenever they wanted.

On the other hand kids today are awash in a tide of information, whick can make sorting true/importanf from false/unimportant just as difficult (see flat earthers). Either way, though, they learn what 1) is deliberately taught to them (school, friends, family,...), and 2) what information they seek out themselves, be it via the internet, print media from library books to magazines, or tv. If they're not interested and are not taught they can easily avoid knowing quite a lot of things, then and now.

They will stay clueless and raise even more clueless kids. When the money runs out, which it frequently does when people don’t realize that there is another world. They will then mostly fail, turn to ever worsening ways of handling. This is sad.

30 People Share The Worst Case Of "Rich Kid Syndrome" They've Ever Seen My old job did this event in Minnesota, where all accountants had to attend to learn about the company’s culture and stuff. So we were all sitting down into tables, and they decided to do a workshop exercise where they scattered all accountants into random groups, and gave us these cards with questions we had to answer; as a fun exercise. Everything was fine up until one girl pulled out the question, “What was the worst thing you have experienced, and how did you handle it?” So accountants at the table were going in turns to talk about different things, passings of parents/spouses, addiction, sickness, divorces…..etc, and I kid you not, this 21 year old Kyle said this when it was his turn, “Yeah my dad is a pilot and my mom is a surgeon and I’m a lonely child. So on my birthday, I usually travel the world, and one time, when I were in Japan, I tried Kobe Beef for the first time, and it was amazing. When I went back to the US, I had an argument with a restaurant owner because they were also serving kobe beef but I knew he was scamming the customers because actual Kobe Beef is not legitimate unless they are prepared in Japan. They kicked me out of the restaurant and I was never kicked out from anywhere.” Everyone was quite and speechless, and one lady said she is not in the mood to continue the game after he was done lol.

I was expecting it to be " worst thing you experienced at work" and was puzzeld about the trauma parade. Work related mishaps (not colleagues dying or so) could be a interesting ice breaker. I was the only staff not having food poisoning (due to I hate cray fish) when a whole bus full of mentally disabled persons covered the floor in poo. Litterary. I felt so sorry for them but was also totally exhausted trying to help all, we was a a restauran. And it was a trip far from home. The bus driver covered the entire bus in plastic before allowing us on when we finally could go home.

What kind of question is that to ask?! When I first read it, I thought "obviously they mean in a professional setting, like a monster customer or a serious error", but people were talking loss, divorce, etc.? Hardly professional.

I would have been tempted to make something up, that was fairly neutral, eg when my hamster died...I certainly wouldn't tell anything about my real life. I did have to do that once, and it blew the interview up, and got me nowhere, only upset.

I worked at a job that regularly asked questions like that, both in group settings, and one on one weekly with our manager. Sometimes they were work oriented like, "what was one goal you wanted to accomplish at work this week that you didn't" but other times it was more like "tell us about the most depressing moment of your life." The worst was, if you opened up in one on one, but didn't speak up during group exercises, managers would often 'encourage' you by saying "oh tell us about the time you blah blah blah", spilling details about your one on one meetings. After these trauma bonding sessions, we had to exercise together (it was a big chain of gyms I worked for). The whole experience was so odd and uncomfortable, I only lasted 3 months...I thought I was there to sell gym memberships, not go through weird cult like group therapy!

Not sure if this fits this question entirely (maybe more so just entitled here but still want to share) — We are currently on vacation in Mazunte, Mexico and one of the nights we went out to dinner, a huge American family came in from Michigan and just started being obnoxious. They were so loud, rude to the waitress, and just annoying — the grandparents (or maybe parents) were basically fighting the whole time, so it just helps paint a good picture of what was going on in a tiny restaurant and their party of about 17. One of the younger girls (maybe mid to late twenties) was just saying the craziest s**t the whole dinner. One of which included her stating that anytime she goes out with family (and they are paying) that she makes sure to order the most expensive things on the menu. Fast forward to her needing the bathroom — we had seen someone else go and we knew you needed a key and the bathroom was around the corner, I tried telling her but she either didn’t hear me — or chose to ignore me — she got up— kind of poked around a little bit and then opened a random closet. We saw her disappear into it and we through for SURE she would come out quickly because we knew she would have to realize quickly that she wasn’t in the bathroom. Unfortunately not the case — this girl stayed in there for a good amount of time — made some loud noises falling over miscellaneous metal material / typical shed things and came out a bit later. She came out unfazed. When another member of her party quickly asked where the bathroom was — she clearly stated you needed a key and told them it was around the corner. At this moment we were pretty sure she used the bathroom in this shed. The audacity of this girl. She knew exactly where the bathroom was and just completely disrespected and intentionally disregarded using the actual restroom knowing where it actually was. We quickly ate our meal and got up to leave, but I we just needed confirmation that what we thought happened happened — so I went into the shed and sure enough — she went to the bathroom on the floor. We were just in shock — I came out and just stared at her. She wouldn’t even look our way. We couldn’t believe it. Can’t even imagine what type of person would do something like that as a visitor to another country while she knew she did something terrible and wasn’t bothered a bit. We informed the owner as we paid and pointed her out in front of the entire restaurant and her whole family. Literally insane.

Exiting the shed, I would've screamed loudly enough so all the restaurant to hear "Who the hell would p**s on the shed floor" then point her out to the owner, so he could kick her out and everybody would know what she did and that she did it!

I worked in a JC Penney’s at one time. A woman came out of the dressing room and announced that she hadn’t wanted to stop shopping, so she had just, defecated in the dressing room. They called security and got her cleaning supplies so she could clean up her mess.

An international student at my university had never been exposed* to even the _idea_ of porn. When he was informed of its existence, he bought three more computer monitors so he could take in as much “content” he’d missed out on as possible while simultaneously doing his homework, gaming, and/or watching (non-porn) movies. He wasn’t even jerking off to it, just immersing himself in the experience. And the aftermath? None. He absorbed it and continued being the same cheery, respectful, accepting guy. After graduation he returned to his home country and inherited a hazily-defined company worth more money than god. *He was _horrifically_ sheltered growing up: When asked if his family had a house or apartment, he replied that the closest translation he could find was “compound”, and that he’d only left for weddings and funerals.

Almost certainly a land where religion has made religiously uptight government. I went to school one year in the part of Fairfax VA, where, at the time at least. Most of the embassy staff workers live around there. I knew a few guys, who were from overseas, that were like this guy. The two that stand out: one carried a wad of colorful bills. He’d show his wallet to people who’d get impressed he’d laugh and tell us it was actually worth a few pennies. He also told us he was the son of a sheikh- then say, laughing, that it didn’t make him special as he only had 42 siblings. The other one lost 17 family members in the Iran revolution that gave Khomeini rulership. He’s was very kind. I ran into him several years later when I was a cashier. I saw him and he saw me. I said his name, he said mine. We never spoke again. The last words he said were “ I never did find my family.” That’s 30+ years ago, and it still harms my soul.

I was workin g on a ranch in Southern Idaho that had a pig barn. Somehow they got these two Japanese kids to work the barn. One of them showed me his family house that was a nice house with no others around it. Apparently he came from a wealthy family but when it came time to go back to Japan he wasn't having it. He'd rather stay in the wide open spaces of America and attend to stinking pigs.

Then he would get hammered in 30 mins and leave, leaving the money with the people he went with, who would leave with his money. I was super jealous of him and his ability to spend money while I came from a poor family. In hindsight his life had to have been miserable, all of his friends were only his friends for money, he was constantly trying to show off his money, and used prostitutes constantly. He was convinced any woman he wanted to talk to would only give him the time of day if she thought she might get a lot of value outta him. He was also incredibly bigoted and racist, and painfully loud-mouthed and unconcerned with social norms. He never got a girlfriend as long as I knew him. I wonder why. ETA: Let me be clear. On at least 2 occasions I was at a fairly big party, with guests including this guy and several women, and he would preach to the whole group, including them, about how materialistic and evil women are. I knew people who knew that revolting throw-back at Oxford. Apparently he was a k**b back then too.

30 People Share The Worst Case Of "Rich Kid Syndrome" They've Ever Seen I knew the members of Fallout Boy when they were in highschool through some other bands I was friends with. I remember seeing them at the Metro in Chicago on the first show of a tour they were going on. In the dressing room before the show one of them was bitching about his parents ONLY giving him a $500/week allowance for the tour and how he didn't think he could survive.

Roomate at unis parents were millionaires. She had the heating on 24/7. Full blast, 24/7. It didn’t have a thermometer like modern ones it’s just on or off on a timer. She regulated the temp by opening her window. She lived on the ground floor so if you turned the heating off she just walked out and turned it on again. I had to wear tank tops and shorts in my room in winter. Highest temp recorded was 28c in winter when normal is 20-21. Our gas bill (and this was 2010 or so when it was way cheaper) was £2000 for the year for a 2 bed house with a converted living room into a 3 bed. 900sq ft or so. She refused to pay and moved out. I sent her parents the bill and they quite literally paid without question and apologised. Bill was in my name and I had 5k a YEAR to live off. For comparison our rent was £250 a month. So my split of gas alone was HALF my rent. Not including tax or electricity. Just gas. Previous flat I paid about £10 a month in gas. To make it worse she lived alone there 5 out of the 12 months as the other two roommates went home and her family lived abroad. So per month I was there it was almost as much as my rent.

I lived in a dorm where we weren't allowed to control the heating so we had to regulate the temperature by opening the window because it was set to 80 F. Glad her parents at least paid the bill.
